- DirectorDavid AyerStarsArnold SchwarzeneggerSam WorthingtonTerrence HowardMembers of an elite DEA task force find themselves being taken down one by one after they rob a drug cartel safe house.Arnie still refusing to hang up his big guns, although this time out he has slowed down a bit and forgotten his catch phrases.
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsPatrick StewartIan McKellenHugh JackmanThe X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants.Time travel is a little bit too far for me in an X men context but at film 7, I guess they a reaching out for ideas now, although number 8 Apocalypse may struggle depending if it is a sequel or prequel or another mix up. That said this movie is well worth watching for the special effects etc.
- DirectorDoug LimanStarsTom CruiseEmily BluntBill PaxtonA soldier fighting aliens gets to relive the same day over and over again, the day restarting every time he dies.Groundhog day meets Starship Troopers ! add a huge budget and Tom Cruise and you get a spectacular Sci fi movie with all the usual CGI effects that are obligatory these days. If like me Sci Fi is your bag, well worth going to see on the big screen, pretty good 3D effects but not overdone. this blu ray will be on my crimbo list.
- DirectorRobert StrombergStarsAngelina JolieElle FanningSharlto CopleyA vengeful fairy is driven to curse an infant princess, only to discover that the child could be the one person who can restore peace to their troubled land.Excellent performance from AJ with an imaginatively original look at this fairy tale. Special /3D effects really good ,well worth seeing on the big screen.
- DirectorDean DeBloisStarsJay BaruchelCate BlanchettGerard ButlerWhen Hiccup and Toothless discover an ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace.More dragons , not so many laughs as the first film. Big budget animation but lacks something.
- DirectorScott FrankStarsLiam NeesonDan StevensDavid HarbourPrivate investigator Matthew Scudder is hired by a drug kingpin to find out who kidnapped and murdered his wife.Predictable stuff, alcoholic ex cop chasing down the bad guys with the help of more bad guys. Good if that's what you like.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsBen AffleckRosamund PikeNeil Patrick HarrisWith his wife's disappearance having become the focus of an intense media circus, a man sees the spotlight turned on him when it's suspected that he may not be innocent.A master class in making a movie, just as you might expect from David Fincher, just like ;Fight Club, Se7en and Zodiac you are glued to the edge of your seat unsure what twist is coming up next, a great story delivered in a classic DF style. Another must see but unfortunately only really a single watch movie.(not true, watched it again and although it loses some of the mystery, it is still a very powerful gripping movie) Ben is back in top form and Rosamund Pike is strikingly brilliant and very different to the role I saw her in just the other day in What we did on our holiday.
- DirectorDavid AyerStarsBrad PittShia LaBeoufLogan LermanA grizzled tank commander makes tough decisions as he and his crew fight their way across Germany in April, 1945.If you like your war films with lots of action and gratuitous carnage this will be right up your street. It is bound to be compared to Saving Private Ryan but that is of course head and shoulders above all other war films as you might expect from Spielberg, where a depth of character is more prominent than the blood and guts splashing across the screen. Brad is not quite Tom Hanks but looks like a new John Wayne. Great performances from the tank crew do make this a very watchable movie, although not for the squeamish. Just decided to add this to my top 20 after seeing again at the cinema.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsMatthew McConaugheyAnne HathawayJessica ChastainWhen Earth becomes uninhabitable in the future, a farmer and ex-NASA pilot, Joseph Cooper, is tasked to pilot a spacecraft, along with a team of researchers, to find a new planet for humans.Brilliant ! Exhilarating, Emotional
I am not sure if I would like this more or less if I was as clever as Prof Brian Cox ??. If black holes, worm holes and the time continuum aren't enough to blow your mind the stunning visual effects will. (although on second viewing I don't think the picture was as sharp as in Gravity) Great performance from MMcC as we now expect as standard.
At 168mins this is the longest film I've seen for a while, but so good I will be going to see it again next week, maybe I'll swot up on Einstein's theory of relativity before hand.(tried that, it didn't help)Still A must see film and a defo for the bluRay list, hopefully there will be an extended edition because this is one of those films where you just want more. Fantastic ! Still great after a 3rd viewing in fact I have raised my rating up to 10 it is so good. 2017 update, now seen this 15 times, still makes my day. - DirectorNeil BurgerStarsShailene WoodleyTheo JamesKate WinsletIn a world divided by factions based on virtues, Tris learns she's Divergent and won't fit in. When she discovers a plot to destroy Divergents, Tris and the mysterious Four must find out what makes Divergents dangerous before it's too late. The 1st part of a trilogy that is sure to be another hit with dystopian fan. Obviously this will be compared to the Hunger Games another futuristic trilogy , although that will be in 4 parts. The future is looking bleak if these are to be believed. If however if you just see the film as a bit of fictional entertainment it is worth a watch, just for the very good performances of the lead actors makes it very watchable.
- DirectorMatt ReevesStarsGary OldmanKeri RussellAndy SerkisThe fragile peace between apes and humans is threatened as mistrust and betrayal threaten to plunge both tribes into a war for dominance over the Earth. It's amazing what you can achieve with new CGI technology, the apes are better than ever. Andy Serkis is brilliant as Caesar ,it's difficult sometimes to remember how good an actor he is due to the CGI covering him. I have always been a fan of the Planet of the apes since the first film with Chuck Heston and although they look a tad dated now, you have to remember what low budgets and old technology they used. The latest 2 modern updates are brilliant and I can't wait for the next one. A must see for the year.
- DirectorMichael SpierigPeter SpierigStarsEthan HawkeSarah SnookNoah TaylorAs his last assignment, a temporal agent is tasked to travel back in time and prevent a bomb attack in New York in 1975. The hunt, however, turns out to be beyond the bounds of possibility.
- DirectorJaume Collet-SerraStarsLiam NeesonJulianne MooreScoot McNairyAn air marshal springs into action during a transatlantic flight after receiving a series of text messages demanding $150 million into an off-shore account, or someone will die every 20 minutes.I wasn't expecting too much from this after hearing some bad reviews, however I thought it was very good. Liam Neeson is great as the washed up Air Marshall and Julianne Moore is always good. The red herrings and twists aren't too obvious as in similar movies, so it keeps you guessing all the way through. Well worth going to see at the cinema, don't wait for a long haul flight for it. :)
- DirectorAlex GarlandStarsAlicia VikanderDomhnall GleesonOscar IsaacA young programmer is selected to participate in a ground-breaking experiment in synthetic intelligence by evaluating the human qualities of a highly advanced humanoid A.I.Nice to see a good Sci-fi again, makes a change from all the recent (good) biographies. Ava the AI robot is excellently played by Alicia Vikander who recently also did a good job in Testament of Youth, so a rising star to watch out for. The film has a good pace and subtle background music. The story plays out like a classic suspenseful and atmospheric thriller. Although some aspects are predictable , well it's about AI so you will expect / guess a few intelligent twists here and there, but the end was more unpredictable, which helped make this my favourite film of the year so far. I enjoyed this just as much on the second viewing too.
- DirectorMatthew VaughnStarsColin FirthTaron EgertonSamuel L. JacksonA spy organisation recruits a promising street kid into the agency's training program, while a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.A modern classic ? an action spy thriller with comedy attitude. Colin Firth is so unlikely as an action man that it helps make this pulp fiction/bond like movie mash-up work so well, of course he plays the gent well but a lethal killing machine ? fantastic ! Some great baddies and bloody marvellous kill scenes. In fact there are so many good parts to this it is a must see. And yes, it was good enough to see a second tine as well.
