- DirectorJaume BalagueróStarsLuis TosarMarta EturaAlberto San JuanCesar, a miserable man who works as an apartment concierge, takes a special interest in an attractive woman who lives there. He goes to great lengths to trouble her. This one is Great, not good.
A sick-in-the-head doorman does some extremely sick things. Luis Tozar is one of the all-time film greats, and this is a truly disturbing (in a good way) film. It's well worth reading subtitles. One note: women may not like this film, especially if they live in a building with a doorman. - DirectorLina WertmüllerStarsGiancarlo GianniniMariangela MelatoRiccardo SalvinoA trip into the Mediterranean sea becomes a trip into the discovery of how society's frameworks of the rich and poor are delicate and temporary. This one is Great, not good.
Another movie worth watching subtitles. This is a love story for people who hate love stories. It's the most misogynistic love story ever made, and one of the funniest. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SWAP THIS VERSION FOR THE MADONNA MOVIE TO AVOID THE SUBTITLES. MADONNA'S / GUY RITCHIE'S VERSION IS TRASH.------------- SPOILER: A Sicilian deckhand and a beautiful, rich Neapolitan snob are shipwrecked together on a deserted island. They despised each other before and after they were stranded together. Politically opposed to each other and each other's homeland, her having rented the yacht that he is serving on, her demanding ways caused their dilemma. Once stranded, she is helpless and he is natural fisherman, gatherer, survivor. He basically enslaves her and takes his hatred of the rich out on her, and she has to go along or she will starve. They live like cave-people, and she falls for him because he beats her, because he totally dominates her at all times, because he plays the part of the master. They create paradise together, living naturally as lovers, but he has to know whether or not she would love him just as much back in society, where dark, little men like him are considered low-class. The ending is also just as great as the entire film, and it leaves you laughing but disturbed by the raw violence of the story itself. - DirectorJerry SchatzbergStarsGene HackmanAl PacinoDorothy TristanAn ex-con drifter with a penchant for brawling is amused by a homeless ex-sailor, so they partner up as they head east together. This movie is good, but not just good. It's not 'The Conversation' but Hackman is almost that good in it. It's not 'Midnight Cowboy' either. but Pacino is almost that good in this one too.
Maybe the best co-star performances you will ever see by two of America's greatest film actors. What is really great about this film is the snapshot of the 1970's it provides, including the landscape, leftover lawlessness from earlier days, etc. The characters are great, especially Hackman as a guy who wants to fight almost everybody. - DirectorJohn BadhamStarsRoy ScheiderWarren OatesCandy ClarkThe cop test pilot for an experimental police helicopter learns the sinister implications of the new vehicle. This is a good helicopter movie, and a good cop story. Roy Scheider is great in this movie, The film is steeped in the 80's, and it works well.
- DirectorClint EastwoodStarsClint EastwoodJessica WalterDonna MillsThe life of a disc jockey is turned upside down after a romantic encounter with an obsessed fan.Clint Eastwood's directorial debut, and the original Fatal Attraction story. It's a well-made film with a lot going on.
- DirectorSidney LumetStarsSean ConneryHarry AndrewsIan BannenIn a North African military prison during World War II, five new prisoners struggle to survive in the face of brutal punishment and sadistic guards.Sean Connery gives one of his best performances in this movie, which is a great but depressing prison story brought to life by Lumet, who was a solid, prolific director who made a bunch of good movies you should watch.
- DirectorRobert BentonStarsPaul NewmanBruce WillisJessica TandyA stubborn man past his prime reflects on his life of strict independence and seeks more from himself. This movie is full of major film stars, from an aging Paul Newman to Bruce Willis in his action-star prime to Philip Seymour Hoffman before he was recognized as a top talent. The story is contained within a small town, but it's enjoyable and the performances are world-class.
- DirectorNick GomezStarsDanny DeVitoBette MidlerNeve CampbellWhen a woman drives a car into the river to her death, everyone in town becomes a suspect. This is a good dark-comedy, deserving of at least a 6.2 rating. It's full of stars giving good performances, such as Danny DeVito, Bette Midler, Casey Affleck, Jamie Lee Curtis, Neve Campbell and Will Ferrell.
- DirectorPeter HyamsStarsSean ConneryFrances SternhagenPeter BoyleA federal marshal stationed at a mining colony on the Jupiter moon of Io uncovers a drug-smuggling conspiracy. He gets no help from the workers or authorities when he finds himself marked for murder. It's 'High Noon' in space, with Connery kicking ass. It's good.
- DirectorRic Roman WaughStarsStephen DorffMarisol NicholsVincent MillerLocked up for killing an intruder in self-defense, a family man must cope with life in the violent penal system. This movie borders on greatness. It's a fantastic prison movie with Val Kilmer at his very best. Anybody who thinks Val is done making good movies hasn't seen this one.
