- DirectorWerner HerzogStarsTimothy TreadwellAmie HuguenardWerner HerzogA devastating and heart-rending take on grizzly bear activists Timothy Treadwell and Amie Huguenard, who were killed in October of 2003 while living among grizzly bears in Alaska.I think you will really like this film if you like documentaries. Documentary is my favorite genre and the guy that made this is one of the best.
This is one of my favorites. A study into the mind of a man disconnected from reality. Hard to believe this is a true story. Bonus: this film contains footage of real live bears and who wouldn't like that? - DirectorJosh GreenbaumStarsAmari AveryJed DyAllan KournikovaThe best 7 year old golfers from around the world descend on the world famous Pinehurst Golf course in North Carolina to determine the next world champion and who might become golf's next phenomenon. Most of these young prodigies have been holding clubs since before they could walk and are better by the time they are six than most people will be in their lifetime. This is the breeding ground for the PGA and the stakes are huge. The short game follows 9 young golfers vying for the title of 'world champion'.You will love this (I'm pretty sure). It is adorable and the kid who is the main little guy interviewed is so charming. Only warning is this film contains one or two overly pushy parents. Seriously though, this film is a mood lifter.
- DirectorErrol MorrisStarsJoyce McKinneyPeter ToryTroy WilliamsA documentary on a former Miss Wyoming who is charged with abducting and imprisoning a young Mormon Missionary.Really good documentary with the caveat that this tells the story of one of the kookiest women in the world. You've heard it said the truth is stranger than fiction and this proves that point. I think you would be intrigued. Non violent and not depressing; just weird in a way that's really interesting and hard not to watch!
- DirectorHarry MosesStarsTeri HortonTod M. VolpeBen HellerIn this documentary, veteran filmmaker Harry Moses exposes the controversy in the world of high priced artwork. He paints a vivid picture of how art is bought and sold in America. This woman is funny! A story about class structure. A female truck driver barges into the world of fine art and hilarity ensues. I think you would like this. Jennifer shows it to students and says they really like it. No violence, not depressing and pretty darn funny.
- DirectorKurt KuenneStarsKurt KuenneAndrew BagbyDavid BagbyA filmmaker decides to memorialize a murdered friend when his friend's ex-girlfriend announces she is expecting his son.Ok this is one of my top 5 favorite documentaries but it is very sad. Get your tissues out. It is worth it but it will involve some crying. It is about an M.D. who was apparently a blessing to the profession. The production value is not big budget (I think this is the director's first film) but it is so good. The parents in this film are so touching and sweet even after they've been to hell and back.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsJack BlackShirley MacLaineMatthew McConaugheyIn small-town Texas, an affable mortician strikes up a friendship with a wealthy widow, though when she starts to become controlling, he goes to great lengths to separate himself from her grasp. This is based on a true story that's weird but in a way that's fun. Very funny, well acted and macabre if that makes any sense. Just watch and see for yourself!
- DirectorErnst LubitschStarsGreta GarboMelvyn DouglasIna ClaireA stern Soviet woman sent to Paris to supervise the sale of jewels seized from Russian nobles finds herself attracted to a man who represents everything she is supposed to detest.Funny classic film. Don't know if you like old movies so I included a few in case you do. It's Greta Garbo and there is nothing bad about that.
- DirectorOlivier DahanStarsMarion CotillardSylvie TestudPascal GreggoryBiopic of the iconic French singer Édith Piaf. Raised by her grandmother in a brothel, she was discovered while singing on a street corner at the age of 19. Despite her success, Piaf's life was filled with tragedy.I love this movie about the French singer Edith Piaf. I love the time and place of the story and the acting is superb.
- DirectorDavid LynchStarsRichard FarnsworthSissy SpacekJane Galloway HeitzAn old man makes a long journey by lawnmower to mend his relationship with an ill brother. This film is charming! The pace may be a little slow for most (not much action, mostly a character story) but I really liked this. This is by David Lynch, the guy who did Blue Velvet and other super weird films. The good news is this film is totally different (in a good way) from his other work. He must have mellowed in his old age.
- DirectorTomas AlfredsonStarsKåre HedebrantLina LeanderssonPer RagnarOskar, an overlooked and bullied boy, finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl.Saw this comment on this film and this is what I think exactly:
"Let the Right one In is like no other vampire movie that I have ever seen. It is smarter, scarier and more nuanced. It doesn't feel like a thriller, it feels like literature."
No wonder I liked it so much, I was an English major and loved every minute of it!
I hesitated to put this one on the list for two reasons: it's a foreign film (subtitles) and it is a horror movie. But it is just a really good movie and is on all sorts of top movie lists. Both viewers and critics love this movie and I do too. Violence is moderate and it's really not scary to watch. Oh and all the cool people have seen this and like it a lot. - DirectorDavid O. RussellStarsBradley CooperJennifer LawrenceRobert De NiroAfter a stint in a mental institution, former teacher Pat Solitano moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things get more challenging when Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl with problems of her own.I didn't think I would like this but I did! I liked it a lot. You may have seen this already. Big blockbuster/Oscar winner.
- DirectorShekhar KapurStarsCate BlanchettLiz GilesRod CulbertsonThe early years of the reign of Elizabeth I of England and her difficult task of learning what is necessary to be a monarch.I love Queen Elizabeth I and this is a great movie if you like period pieces. Cate Blanchett is excellent as QEI. If you don't like dead English monarchs this may not interest you and that is OK.
- DirectorAnthony MinghellaStarsMatt DamonGwyneth PaltrowJude LawIn late 1950s New York, a young underachiever named Tom Ripley is sent to Italy to retrieve Dickie Greenleaf, a rich and spoiled millionaire playboy. But when the errand fails, Ripley takes extreme measures. You may have seen this but if not it's a great thriller with terrific acting.
- DirectorChiemi KarasawaStarsElaine StritchTina FeyAlec BaldwinThe uncompromising Tony and Emmy Award-winner is showcased both on and off stage via rare archival footage and intimate cinema vérité.Everybody loves Elaine Stritch. Charming and funny.
- DirectorTerrence MalickStarsMartin SheenSissy SpacekWarren OatesAn impressionable teenage girl from a dead-end town, and her older greaser boyfriend, embark on a killing spree in the South Dakota Badlands.Pretty movie starring a very young Sissy Spacek and Martin Sheen.
- DirectorAntoine FuquaStarsDenzel WashingtonMarton CsokasChloë Grace MoretzA man who believes he has put his mysterious past behind him cannot stand idly by when he meets a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters.Good fast paced current movie where the bad guys get what they deserve.
- DirectorChristopher GuestStarsFred WillardEugene LevyCatherine O'HaraA behind-the-scenes look into the highly competitive and cut-throat world of dog shows through the eyes of a group of ruthless dog owners.Hilarious! Very ironic but if it matches your sense of humor you'll die laughing and if it doesn't you may not like it. Directed by the less famous husband of Jamie Lee Curtis (she's not in the movie though ).
- DirectorPete DocterBob PetersonStarsEdward AsnerJordan NagaiJohn Ratzenberger78-year-old Carl Fredricksen travels to Paradise Falls in his house equipped with balloons, inadvertently taking a young stowaway. One of the best movies ever! This is an animated film but it is more tuned to the adult audience for sure. Charming, funny and will make you feel warm and fuzzy inside.
- DirectorStephen FrearsStarsHelen MirrenMichael SheenJames CromwellAfter the death of Princess Diana, Queen Elizabeth II struggles with her reaction to a sequence of events nobody could have predicted.I love the Queen and I love Helen Mirren! If you haven't seen this it is superb.
- DirectorSacha GervasiStarsAnthony HopkinsHelen MirrenScarlett JohanssonThe relationship between Alfred Hitchcock and his wife Alma Reville during the filming of Psycho (1960) in 1959 is explored.More Helen Mirren. Pretty interesting film.
- DirectorMartin CampbellStarsDaniel CraigEva GreenJudi DenchAfter earning a licence to kill, secret agent James Bond sets out on his first mission as 007. Bond must defeat a private banker funding terrorists in a high-stakes game of poker at Casino Royale, in Montenegro. You may have seen this. Great newer Bond film.
- DirectorKathryn BigelowStarsJessica ChastainJoel EdgertonChris PrattA chronicle of the decade-long hunt for al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden after the September 2001 attacks, and his death at the hands of the Navy S.E.A.L.s Team 6 in May 2011.Good movie about the raid that killed Bin Laden.
- DirectorKathryn BigelowStarsJeremy RennerAnthony MackieBrian GeraghtyDuring the Iraq War, a Sergeant recently assigned to an army bomb squad is put at odds with his squad mates due to his maverick way of handling his work.Good movie about the war in Iraq. Very realistic view into the stress and fear these soldiers experienced while doing their daily jobs. Violence is moderate, but the tension is high. You may need a drink to unwind after this one.
- DirectorTheodore MelfiStarsBill MurrayMelissa McCarthyNaomi WattsA young boy whose parents have just divorced finds an unlikely friend and mentor in the misanthropic, bawdy, hedonistic war veteran who lives next door.In theaters now. Very charming and the little boy is a great actor.
- DirectorBennett MillerStarsPhilip Seymour HoffmanClifton Collins Jr.Catherine KeenerIn 1959, Truman Capote learns of the murder of a Kansas family and decides to write a book about the case. While researching for his novel In Cold Blood, Capote forms a relationship with one of the killers, Perry Smith, who is on death row.I love Phillip Seymour Hoffman and he is so good in this.
