- DirectorStuart BeattieStarsAaron EckhartBill NighyMiranda OttoFrankenstein's creature finds himself caught in an all-out, centuries-old war between two immortal clans.Saw this once it hit video. Not totally horrible, but it is just hard to ultimately accept this retelling as it is very very far from the Frankenstein we know. It is OK, but nothing more.
- DirectorTom GormicanStarsZac EfronMichael B. JordanMiles TellerThree best friends find themselves where we've all been - at that confusing moment in every dating relationship when you have to decide "So...where is this going?"Saw this one via rental from On-Demand. Film has a major identity crisis; is it a comedy, drama, love story? It tips its toe in all of these but is never very funny or emotionally convincing. Definitely don't recommend.
- DirectorPhil LordChristopher MillerStarsChris PrattWill FerrellElizabeth BanksAn ordinary LEGO construction worker, thought to be the prophesied as "special", is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil tyrant from gluing the LEGO universe into eternal stasis.Absolute joy! Took grandson's to see this and WE all loved it. The best part of the movie is that they captured what it was like to play with Legos. The ending was quite unexpected and lovely. Highly recommend.
- DirectorGeorge ClooneyStarsGeorge ClooneyMatt DamonBill MurrayAn unlikely World War II platoon is tasked to rescue art masterpieces from German thieves and return them to their owners.Saw this via On-Demand. The trailers sold this as an Indiana Jones type of adventure, but it is not really that fun. Not a bad movie by any means, you just have to temper your expectations and realize this is more docu-drama (it is based on the real group of men who formed the team during WWII) than action adventure. Cautiously recommend.
- DirectorJosé PadilhaStarsJoel KinnamanGary OldmanMichael KeatonIn 2028 Detroit, when Alex Murphy, a loving husband, father and good cop, is critically injured in the line of duty, the multinational conglomerate OmniCorp sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer.Saw this via rented blu-ray. As remakes go, not a bad movie. It is a very different film from the original, depending on how you can accept that will determine your enjoyment level. On its own merit, not bad, but not something I will ever watch again either. Cautiously recommend.
- DirectorNeil BurgerStarsShailene WoodleyTheo JamesKate WinsletIn a world divided by factions based on virtues, Tris learns she's Divergent and won't fit in. When she discovers a plot to destroy Divergents, Tris and the mysterious Four must find out what makes Divergents dangerous before it's too late.Saw this via blu-ray. Definitely a kindred sister to Hunger Games, the dystopian future class system is broken down more here having persons fall into 5 distinct groups rather than just a simple the haves and have nots. Very nice premise and performances, looking forward to the future films. Recommend.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsChris EvansSamuel L. JacksonScarlett JohanssonAs Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world, he teams up with a fellow Avenger and S.H.I.E.L.D agent, Black Widow, to battle a new threat from history: an assassin known as the Winter Soldier. One of the few trips to the theater this year and a very enjoyable one at that. Set after the events of The Avengers, part super hero film and part thriller, a nice direction given to Capt America here. Anxious to see the next installment. Highly recommended.
- DirectorMichael TiddesStarsMarlon WayansJaime PresslyCedric The EntertainerHaving exorcised the demons of his ex, Malcolm is starting fresh with his new girlfriend and her two children. After moving into their dream home, however, Malcolm is once again plagued by bizarre paranormal events.Saw this via a rental. As parodies go, not bad at all. Actually had some legitimate LOL moments. This is definitely only for the parody/Wayan Bros. fan crowd. Check it out only if you are a fan.
- DirectorNick CassavetesStarsCameron DiazLeslie MannKate UptonAfter discovering that her boyfriend is married, Carly meets the wife he's been betraying; when yet another affair is discovered, all three women team up to plot revenge on the three-timing S.O.B.Saw this via On-Demand rental. Harmless enough, but ultimately, not near as funny as it could have been, which is a shame. There is some talent at work here and the premise would seem to be rich for fodder. All for not though as there is more bad than good. Cautiously recommend.
- DirectorMarc WebbStarsAndrew GarfieldEmma StoneJamie FoxxWhen New York is put under siege by Oscorp, it is up to Spider-Man to save the city he swore to protect as well as his loved ones.Took grandsons to see this at local discount theater. I personally enjoyed the film, more so than the majority who seem to have been disappointed. I still enjoy these films more than the Raimi films, sue me :) . Recommended.
- DirectorNicholas StollerStarsSeth RogenRose ByrneZac EfronAfter they are forced to live next to a fraternity house, a couple with a newborn baby do whatever they can to take them down.Saw this via On-Demand rental. Definitely worth a rental, had fun watching this. Efron catches flack a lot, but the guy really shows a good comedic sense here. I'm so over Rogen and his obvious improv riffing in movies, he doesn't ruin the movie, but I for one am tired of his schtick. I enjoy his writing, just done seeing him, if that makes sense. Recommend.
- DirectorJon FavreauStarsJon FavreauRobert Downey Jr.Scarlett JohanssonA head chef quits his restaurant job and buys a food truck in an effort to reclaim his creative promise, while piecing back together his estranged family.Saw this via Redbox rental. One of the top 5 films I have seen this year. Wonderful performances in this very stripped down, focused effort from Favreau. Highly recommended.
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsPatrick StewartIan McKellenHugh JackmanThe X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants.Saw this in theater. Was worried about Singer, I thought his lack of action sensibility would kill this film as it hurt his previous 2 entries IMO. No need to worry, what we got here was one of the best X-Men films to date. Highly recommended.
- DirectorRobert StrombergStarsAngelina JolieElle FanningSharlto CopleyA vengeful fairy is driven to curse an infant princess, only to discover that the child could be the one person who can restore peace to their troubled land.Saw this in the theater. One of Jolie's best character parts ever. Really enjoyed this alternate take on one of Disney's most famous villainesses. Highly recommended.
- DirectorJosh BooneStarsShailene WoodleyAnsel ElgortNat WolffHazel and Gus are teenagers who meet at a cancer support group and fall in love. They both share the same acerbic wit and a love of books, especially "An Imperial Affliction", so they embark on a journey to visit an author in Amsterdam.Saw this via Blu-ray disk. Wonderful story and performances. The film is actually quite funny and light through most of it, even with the serious nature of the story. The last 30 minutes will rip your heart out, but it is none the less a wonderful story to see. Highly recommended.
- DirectorMichael BayStarsMark WahlbergNicola Peltz BeckhamJack ReynorWhen humanity allies with a bounty hunter in pursuit of Optimus Prime, the Autobots turn to a mechanic and his family for help.Saw this in theater. I make no bones about it, unlike many of the Bay-bashers out there, I appreciate that he gives us a pure theatrical ride for our money. I don't get out to see many movies and it is great to see a movie from someone that is trying to give you your money's worth. I enjoyed the more mature presence of Wahlberg in this one compared to Lebouf. I hope they keep this cast going forward. Highly recommended.
- DirectorMatt ReevesStarsGary OldmanKeri RussellAndy SerkisThe fragile peace between apes and humans is threatened as mistrust and betrayal threaten to plunge both tribes into a war for dominance over the Earth.Saw this in the theater. The reboot of this franchise continues to gain great momentum. The great start with "Rise" is continued here. The CGI character work continues to break barriers. Highly recommended.
- DirectorJames DeMonacoStarsFrank GrilloCarmen EjogoZach GilfordThree groups of people intertwine and are left stranded in the streets on Purge Night, trying to survive the chaos and violence that occurs.Saw this in our discount theater. Not having seen the first film, I can say that is not required as this film is easy to follow. I found this to be a very satisfying at the same time unsettling ride. Highly recommended.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsChris PrattVin DieselBradley CooperA group of intergalactic criminals must pull together to stop a fanatical warrior with plans to purge the universe.Took my grandsons to see this in the theater. Marvel basically took the Star Wars formula and used it in a comic film. Absolute joy to watch. Highly recommended.
- DirectorJonathan LiebesmanStarsMegan FoxWill ArnettWilliam FichtnerWhen a kingpin threatens New York City, a group of mutated turtle warriors must emerge from the shadows to protect their home. This was a blind-buy blu-ray. I was concerned with the turtles being CGI. No worries there, the CGI is really well done. The turtle characters are captured perfectly. The story is thin, but when has a TMNT been a deep character/story adventure? NEVER. LOL. Recommend it.
- DirectorWes BallStarsDylan O'BrienKaya ScodelarioWill PoulterThomas is deposited in a community of boys after his memory is erased, soon learning they're all trapped in a maze that will require him to join forces with fellow "runners" for a shot at escape.Saw this via On-Demand. Another YA title of a dystopian future. This time, we have a male lead. Very much a setup film, it does a really good job of introducing characters and setting up plot, leaving us with a cliffhanger ending. Luckily it did well enough to get a sequel, which I am looking forward to. Highly recommended.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsBen AffleckRosamund PikeNeil Patrick HarrisWith his wife's disappearance having become the focus of an intense media circus, a man sees the spotlight turned on him when it's suspected that he may not be innocent.Saw this in the theater. Another Fincher classic. The performances are top notch and the story compelling and twisting. One of those nice slow burns, but not too slow. Highly recommended.
- DirectorVic ArmstrongStarsNicolas CageLea ThompsonCassi ThomsonA small group of survivors is left behind after millions of people suddenly vanish and the world is plunged into chaos and destruction.Saw this in the theater. Not a lot of difference here and the original film. We get a VERY normal and bland Cage character, which for me, is not what I want from him. He is so wonderful when he is not playing the average Joe. Rental if you must.
- DirectorFrancis LawrenceStarsJennifer LawrenceJosh HutchersonLiam HemsworthKatniss Everdeen is in District 13 after she shatters the games forever. Under the leadership of President Coin and the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss spreads her wings as she fights to save Peeta and a nation moved by her courage.Saw this in the theater. Performances are wonderful as usual. The big complaint is nothing really happens. Potter and Twilight split their final books into 2 films and all in all, this worked out well. Mockingjay pt1 is very much all setup and no payoff. I recommend it, but temper your expectations. I hope pt2 really brings the payoff.
