- StarsHarry FurnissMary FullerWillis SecordA wealthy artist lives in retirement in his country mansion with his only son, Charles, who is averse to country life and anxious to make his abode in the city where they raise brides instead of crops. One day a sketch club, consisting of a bevy of beauties, arrive by motor from the city to sketch the ruins of an old castle which they are at first unable to locate. Nell Travers, the leading spirit of the party, inquires at the mansion for direction and thus forms the acquaintance of Charles, who begs to be permitted to act as guide. She gladly accepts the proposition and introduces him to the other members of the Sketch Club, and together they proceed to the old ruins and after considerable discussion as to the best point of view, the tripods and canvases are finally placed and each girl's name written in bold type across the top of her canvas. It is noon and they decide to return to their motor car for luncheon, but Charles, having become enamored of Nell's charms, persuades her to meander in an opposite direction. The canvases being left alone, Charles' father, when he happens upon the scene, is unable to resist the temptation of carrying out a practical joke. He draws a caricature upon each canvas and in fiendish glee departs for home. When the girls return and discover their canvases unfit to work upon, they conclude that Nell, the missing one, must be the culprit and immediately depart for home in their motor, leaving Nell to get home as best she can. When Nell learns of the girls' sudden departure, the gallant Charles offers to drive her home in his trap. At the mansion she meets his jovial father and, seeing the various drawings about the house, she immediately suspects him of being the one who disfigured the girls' canvases. She makes the accusation and the old gentleman admits that he is the real culprit and humbly apologizes for his joke. Nell now starts for home escorted by Charles, and we can plainly see that he is no longer anxious for city life.

- DirectorEdwin S. PorterThe scene opens in an artist's studio, the artist asleep in his chair. A large old fashioned clock opens and a young lady comes out and awaking the artist, requests him to paint her picture. He continues to paint. The clown becomes interested and asks the artist to allow him to paint the picture, and begins smearing a whitewash brush over the canvas, when lo, a most perfect image of the young lady appears. The image then steps down from the frame, joins the young lady in the studio, and the figures, each a perfect counterpart of the other begin to dance to the great astonishment of the artist. The clown the by waving his hand causes the figures of the two girls to merge into one. The artist then assumes his seat and awakens from his dream with a great shock.

- The rush for gold was on and many there were who flocked to Nome in search of the precious metal, among them Tom Stuart, who left a wife and young daughter behind, back east. The girl fell in love with the son of a rich broker, and when he informed his father that he intended to wed the girl a storm of protest followed and the boy was warned never to see the girl. However, love knows no obstacles, and the happy twain were wed. They departed for the west shortly after, the girl writing her father in advance of their coming. Meanwhile, there was trouble in the gold mining camp and Tom Stuart was daily missing small portions of his hoardings of dust. Where it went he could not guess, but suspicion pointed strongly to Jose, a Mexican roustabout. Tom's partner was unmindful of the loss and led a care-free happy life. When the newly-married couple from the east reached the Nome region they were tired and worn out. They sought shelter in the very cave where Tom Stuart's gold was concealed and accidentally discovered the treasure. Of course, they filled their pockets and journeyed to the camp. Tom Stuart discovered his loss the next day and aroused the camp to action. Jose, the suspect, was dragged to the nearest tree and was about to lose his life, for he confessed to small thefts, when the broker's son learned of the commotion and appeared on the scene in time to explain away the guilt of Jose. Father and daughter met for the first time in three long years, and Tom accepted his new son-in-law in good faith, in spite of his innocent escapade, which almost caused a tragedy. Some time later the happy and prosperous couple returned to the east, just in time to save a ruined broker from suicide. A father's forgiveness followed, of course.

He falls in love at first sight, and learning that the stranger is the country school ma'am, seeks admission to the night school in order that he may win her affections. Dick pretends to be a stupid country boy; the teacher, being a woman of patience, tries hard to have him learn, but his object was love, not study. One day while riding, the teacher stopped at his residence for a rest, where, much to her surprise, she learns that he is a Harvard graduate, and a man of wealth. She asks for an explanation of his actions. Dick begs forgiveness, explaining that all is fair in love, and finally wins her hand.

At a dance one evening there is introduced to her a man who shows that he is attracted by the girl, but unlike the other suitors, he does not flatter her. With her thoughts all of the stranger, she sits alone, musing. It seems to her that she is carried backward many centuries to a time when by her supposed magic arts, she reigned over a tribe of cave men. But in her rude court one day there appears a stranger who derided her powers. The others would have attacked him, but she stayed the hands the stranger walked off. The stranger stirred up her heretofore loyal subjects to rebellion. They stormed her cave, but her magic was still potent and she drove them off. But the stranger remained and finally took him prisoner, dragging her back to the village of the men who had once held her as a queen, where they decided to put her to death. The stranger however, balked their plans and told them that she belonged to him, and ordered them out of his way. When they tried to bar his progress, he fought his way through them and to safety in the wilderness outside, with her in his arms. She comes back to a realization of the present with a start. The stranger stands before her, asks for the next dance. In a daze she rises and takes his arm, and walks with him toward the ballroom. And all the way the one thought running through her head: "I wonder if he is the man?" For the stranger at the dance looked exactly like the man who in the prehistoric past subjugated the goddess and fought the timid cave men, who first worshiped her and then wanted to put her to death.

- In this film, which was taken under the auspices of the United States government, the auditor is taken on an intimate inside trip across the entire canal zone. The first scenes show the Pedro Miguel Locks and the whole process of building these gigantic walls and gates of concrete and steel. We are shown huge cranes carrying sand, rock and cement to the mixers. Then the carrying to and dumping of the cement upon the locks. Miraflares Locks, the top of the gates at Gatun, the huge conveyors and cranes at Gatun, the building of the gates, lake walls, and locks at Gatun, and an interesting panorama of Gatun lake and locks gives us a thorough understanding of this phase of the great project. Then we are taken to the Culebra cut region, where we follow the work as it progresses rapidly under the perfect system directed by the most skilled U.S.A. engineers. The drills, steam shovels, spreaders, trains, dumpers, etc., are all shown and we leave Culebra after viewing an interesting panorama of the entire cut. We are now taken to Panama City, on the Pacific Coast, and after viewing the track shifter and its almost human functions, we can indeed say that we have seen the canal zone and its vast work under better conditions than most of those who travel to the zone in person.

Beginning when they play and sing in the saloons together, passing through the time when she is a coon shouter in a popular priced theater and then under his careful training becomes a good concert singer, she finally accepts an offer of a leading role in a big production in a large city. This, of course, leaves the old father alone as he cannot travel with her and at their parting she gives him some money to take care of him until the first salary day comes around. As he turns from the railroad station he is followed by two men who have noticed the money. By the river's edge they attack him, take the money and put him, unconscious, into a small boat, which is shoved off into the stream. At Rest Haven he is cared for by fisher folk who find him, but he has lost his memory and all idea of who he is or where he belongs. The singer is fairly beside herself because she can get no word and finally employs a detective to trace him. The years roll by and the great singer comes for a vacation to Rest Haven and is asked to sing at a benefit concert for the Old Men's Home. The detective, coming there, tells her that his search is over, that he has exhausted every resource and failed to find her father. Later, among the fisher folk, he sees one who resembles the picture which he had. He questions him but the old man can tell him nothing of his past and so he invites him to the concert. Thus the father is brought face to face with his daughter, but while something in his mind puzzles him, he is unable to place her until she sings an old song which he taught her. Then, of course, recognition comes, and his mind is restored to him.

- StarsShirley MasonThe story begins with the waking up of the little heroine by her small tot of a sister, who comes in in her nightie and after throwing a pillow at her, calls her excitedly to the window and bids her look out. Of course when she looks out there is nothing to be seen there, and April Fool's Day has started. Then we see two very youthful lovers on their way to school. The boy stops at the gate and carries her books for her and when he reaches school, taking from his pocket a small bag of candy, he offers it to her. She takes a large piece and a large bite of the large piece, and then finds that the candy is loaded with vinegar. Of course she proceeds to get even by puncturing holes in an apple and filling the holes with pepper, but the young man is too smart for her, for he substitutes an apple of his own and apparently eats the peppered one with great gusto. Then shifting again, he thrusts upon her the peppered apple and she is caught at her own trick. Of course this is too much for the young lady and she goes home alone, refusing to see him and shutting him out of the front door when he follows her on to the front porch. Being something of a diplomat, the young man procures another partner to go to school with him, and our little heroine sees her best man paying attentions to another girl. When he gives her a piece of cake and accepts a button-hole bouquet, the climax of jealousy is reached. After school, on the way home, the young lady drops her belt into a puddle of water and not wishing to soil her hands, tries to fish it out with a stick. Our small hero comes along and offers his assistance, which is scornfully refused at first, the reason being given that he is wearing a buttonhole bouquet of another young lady. He gallantly tears this off and flings it to the ground and offers his services again. This time they are accepted. Then he decides that the will not get the belt without a kiss. Sitting on an old stile the two youngsters play for this kiss, the girl holding off and the small boy following her. Suddenly they realize that an April shower is coming. The young man runs down the steps of the stile and picks up the umbrella which he has carried. Now the rain begins to pour down in earnest and the little lady asks him to put the umbrella over her, but he still holds off until she gives him the promised kiss. Meantime they are both getting drenched to the skin in a realistic thunder shower, which finally forces the young lady to accede and the kiss is given.

- DirectorGeorge NicholsStarsWilliam RussellFlorence La BadieJames CruzeA wealthy Moor had one treasure he failed to prize at its real value, his beautiful daughter. To him she was simply a woman, a source of expense while a child, and a treasure only, if a rich suitor came along to whom she could practically be sold. In course of time the rich man did appear, and was enthusiastically greeted by the father. The daughter, however, had the temerity to say that she did not love the man. In fact her heart had been won by another, a young Arab she had seen while in the marketplace. She knew little about him but was convinced that he was far more worthy than the suitor her father had selected. The father was obdurate, however. He did not deign to argue with the girl, simply commanded her to prepare for the ceremony, and with sighs and tears she did so. The girl had a faithful attendant, homely but quick-witted and resourceful. The attendant proposed a plan which she thought had merit, for it would make three persons happy. And affairs came out as she had predicted. The father was happy because he got the money that had been promised him; the daughter and the Arab were pleased because they married, and the attendant was satisfied, for she won a rich husband although having neither cash nor beauty. The only unhappy person was the rich suitor, but then he was wealthy, and riches bring their own consolation.

- DirectorMinna PackerThis film skillfully incorporates rare archival footage shot in 1937 by an American born in Gombin (75 miles northwest of Warsaw) with contemporary scenes to tell the story of 50 children of Holocaust survivors who return to their parents' village in Poland. They make friends, unexpectedly, with some of their parents' former neighbors and together they pay homage to their ancestors in this town where Jews and Christians lived together for centuries. We join them at the rededication of the Jewish cemetery, restoring tombstones desecrated and used as road paving; at the placement of a monument to the Jewish victims at Chelmno, the first extermination camp in Nazi-occupied Poland; and at the Konin slave labor camp's mass grave, where the filmmaker's grandfather is buried. This moving film makes a strong statement about the continuity of life and the need of subsequent generations to remember.
