Alan Abelew was born on 1 January 1947 in Los Angeles, California, USA. He was an actor and producer, known for Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood (1996), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997) and Lucas Tanner (1974). He died on 27 November 2019.- Alan Berg was born in Chicago in January of 1934, the son of Dr. Joseph Berg and Ruth Berg. Alan had one older sister, Norma. At 17, he attended college at the University of Colorado in Denver. After two years, he transferred to the University of Denver. He graduated in 1957, and became one of the youngest people to pass the bar exam in the history of Illinois (at 22). He first met his wife, Judith Halpern in 1951, and the two were married in 1958. Berg began his career as a law clerk before finally becoming a lawyer. Because he was overworked (and because he was suffering from seizures), he became an alcoholic. The pressure finally became too great, and he left his law practice in Chicago and moved to Denver with his wife. He entered St. Joseph's Hospital to quit drinking, and never took another in his life. He then became a shoe salesman. He later opened his own clothing store, The Shirt Broker. It was there that he met Laurence Gross, a Talk Show host with KGMC. He admired the fact that Berg could talk spontaneously on any subject, and invited him to be on his show several times. After Gross moved to San Diego, Berg was given his show. he soon began to hang up on people, insult them over the air, and generally be outrageous. In 1976, he suffered a seizure that he was unable to come out of. It was discovered that he had a large brain tumor. He had surgery to remove it, and soon recovered and was back on the radio. He left KGMC (now called KWBZ), and got a job at KHOW, where he reached the apex of hanging up. He and Judith were divorced in 1978. While at KHOW, Berg became both the most popular (and most disliked) radio personality in Denver. After refusing to conform to the station, he was fired from KHOW in August of 1979. He returned to KWBZ. After they changed their format to music, Berg was again out of a job. KTOK, an Oklahoma City based station, became interested in Berg. before he accepted the job, he was offered to fill in at Denver's most powerful station, KOA. About half the callers wanted him hired, and the other half did not. He signed a contract with Detroit's WXYZ, but later dropped out of it when KOA offered him a show. He began on February 23, 1981. He than began to change, his rudeness waning. After receiving a flap from former Secretary of State Ellen Kaplan, he invited her on the show and berated her. KOA, fearing a lawsuit, gave Berg a few days vacation. Berg was never blatantly abusive to another guest. After criticizing Roderick Elliot and Frank "Bud" Farell, who wrote "The Death of the White Race" and "Open Letter to the Gentiles," the white supremacist group known as "The Order" began to view him as a threat. After harassing Colonel Jack Mohr, a member of the Christian Patriots Defense League, Berg became a target. While most of his friends and associates said he was mellowing out, sadly we will never know. Alan Berg was shot 12 times in the face and body while exiting his Volkswagen. He was officially pronounced dead at 9:45 p.m. on June 18th, 1984.

Carole Landis was born on New Year's Day in 1919 in Fairchild, Wisconsin, as Frances Lillian Mary Ridste. Her father, a railroad mechanic, was of Norwegian descent and her mother was Polish. Her father walked out, leaving Carole, her mother and an older brother and sister to fend for themselves.
After graduating from high school, she married Jack Robbins (Irving Wheeler), but the union lasted a month (the marriage was annulled because Carole was only 15 at the time). The couple remarried in August 1934, and the two headed to California to start a new life. For a while she worked as a dancer and singer, but before long the glitter of show business drew her to Los Angeles.
She won a studio contract with Warner Brothers but was a bit player for the most part in such films as A Star Is Born (1937), A Day at the Races (1937), and The Emperor's Candlesticks (1937). The following year started out much the same way, with more bit roles. By 1939, she was getting a few speaking roles, although mostly one-liners, and that year ended much as had the previous two years, with more bit roles; also, she and Wheeler were divorced.
In 1940 she was cast as Loana in the Hal Roach production of One Million B.C. (1940); she finally got noticed (the skimpy outfit helped), and her career began moving. She began getting parts in B pictures but didn't star in big productions -- although she had talent, the really good roles were given to the established stars of the day.
Her busiest year was 1942, with roles in Manila Calling (1942), The Powers Girl (1943), A Gentleman at Heart (1942), and three other movies. Unfortunately, critics took little notice of her films, and when they did, reviewers tended to focus on her breathtaking beauty. By the middle 1940s, Carole's career was beginning to short-circuit. Her contract with 20th Century-Fox had been canceled, her marriages to Willis Hunt Jr. and Thomas Wallace had failed, and her current marriage to Horace Schmidlapp was on the skids; all of that plus health problems spelled disaster for her professionally and personally.
Her final two films, Brass Monkey (1948) and The Silk Noose (1948) were released in 1948. On July 5, 1948, Carole committed suicide by taking an overdose of Seconal in her Brentwood Heights, California, home. She was only 29 and had made 49 pictures, most of which were, unfortunately, forgettable. If Hollywood moguls had given Carole a chance, she could have been one of the brightest stars in its history.- Actress

American character actor of gruff voice and appearance who was a fixture in Hollywood pictures from the earliest days of the talkies. The fifth of seven children, he was born in the first minute of 1891. He was a boisterous child, and at nine was tried and acquitted for attempted murder in the shooting of a motorman who had run over his dog. He worked as a lumberjack and investment promoter, and briefly ran his own pest extermination business. In his late teens, he gave up the business and traveled aimlessly about country. In San Francisco, an attempt to romance a burlesque actress resulted in an offer to join her show as a performer. He spent the next dozen years touring the country in road companies, then made a smash hit on Broadway in "Outside Looking In". Cecil B. DeMille saw Bickford on the stage and offered him the lead in Dynamite (1929). Contracted to MGM, Bickford fought constantly with studio head Louis B. Mayer and was for a time blacklisted among the studios. He spent several years working in independent films as a freelancer, then was offered a contract at Twentieth Century Fox. Before the contract could take effect, however, Bickford was mauled by a lion while filming 'East of Java (1935)'. He recovered, but lost the Fox contract and his leading man status due to the extensive scarring of his neck and also to increasing age. He continued as a character actor, establishing himself as a character star in films like The Song of Bernadette (1943), for which he received the first of three Oscar nominations. Burly and brusque, he played heavies and father figures with equal skill. He continued to act in generally prestigious films up until his death in 1967.- Actor

American leading man of the 1940s and 1950s, Dana Andrews was born Carver Dana Andrews on New Years Day 1909 on a farmstead outside Collins, Covington County, Mississippi. One of thirteen children, including fellow actor Steve Forrest, he was a son of Annis (Speed) and Charles Forrest Andrews, a Baptist minister.
Andrews studied business administration at Sam Houston State Teachers College in Texas, but took a bookkeeping job with Gulf Oil in 1929, aged 20, prior to graduating. In 1931, he hitchhiked to California, hoping to get work as an actor. He drove a school bus, dug ditches, picked oranges, worked as a stock boy, and pumped gas while trying without luck to break into the movies. His employer at a Van Nuys gas station believed in him and agreed to invest in him, asking to be repaid if and when Andrews made it as an actor. Andrews studied opera and also entered the Pasadena Community Playhouse, the famed theatre company and drama school. He appeared in scores of plays there in the 1930s, becoming a favorite of the company. He played opposite future star Robert Preston in a play about composers Gilbert and Sullivan, and soon thereafter was offered a contract by Samuel Goldwyn.
It was two years before Goldwyn and 20th Century-Fox (to whom Goldwyn had sold half of Andrews' contract) put him in a film, but the roles, though secondary, were mostly in top-quality pictures such as The Westerner (1940) and The Ox-Bow Incident (1942). A starring role in the hit Laura (1944), followed by one in The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), made him a star, but no later film quite lived up to the quality of these. During his career, he had worked with with such directors as Otto Preminger, Fritz Lang, William Wyler, William A. Wellman, Jean Renoir, and Elia Kazan.
Andrews slipped into a steady stream of unremarkable films in which he gave sturdy performances, until age and other interests resulted in fewer appearances. In addition, his increasing alcoholism caused him to lose the confidence of some producers. Andrews took steps to curb his addiction and in his later years was an outspoken member of the National Council on Alcoholism, who decried public refusal to face the problem. He was probably the first actor to do a public service announcement about alcoholism (in 1972 for the U.S. Department of Transportation), and did public speaking tours. Andrews was one of the first to speak out against the degradation of the acting profession, particularly actresses doing nude scenes just to get a role.
Andrews was elected president of the Screen Actors Guild in 1963, serving until 1965. He retired from films in the 1960s and made, he said, more money from real estate than he ever did in movies. Yet he and his second wife, actress Mary Todd, lived quietly in a modest home in Studio City, California. Andrews suffered from Alzheimer's disease in his later years and spent his final days in a nursing facility. He died of congestive heart failure and pneumonia in 1992, aged 83.- Actress

Dana DeLorenzo was born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio and showed an innate love of comedy and performance at an early age. At age 3 she made up knock-knock jokes and recorded them on her Fischer-Price tape recorder solely to listen back and make herself laugh. At some point she started doing impressions. She landed her first paying gig at 11 yrs old performing Abbott and Costello's "Who's On First" with her younger brother in a weekly variety show.
DeLorenzo graduated from DePaul University in Chicago and soon after became an on-air personality and producer on The Mancow Show. She continued to perform in various theater productions around Chicago, and in 2008 formed an Amy Winehouse tribute band called House of Winehouse. The band performed at various festivals and venues including Pridefest Milwaukee and House of Blues Chicago. DeLorenzo garnered international acclaim for her uncanny portrayal of the singer, including a feature in The Chicago Tribune and was voted Best Tribute Band by The Chicago Reader in 2010.
Later that year DeLorenzo moved to Los Angeles, and soon after appeared in various TV shows (Californication, Workaholics, 2 Broke Girls) and films (A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas, The Mad Ones). She gained attention with her first recurring role on television playing Beth the CBS Executive on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. DeLorenzo returned to the stage to perform in the original LA production of The Best of Craigslist Live! and in sold-out tours in Chicago at The Royal George Theatre as well as the prestigious Joe's Pub in New York City. DeLorenzo continued down the comedy road and returned to doing impressions on PopTV's Impress Me opposite Ross Marquand (The Walking Dead).
DeLorenzo's breakout role came when she was cast alongside Bruce Campbell in the horror-comedy series Ash Vs. Evil Dead, a continuation of the cult-classic movie trilogy The Evil Dead written and directed by Sam Raimi. DeLorenzo won the approval of fans and critics alike originating the role of Kelly Maxwell, the foul-mouthed demon-slaying sidekick to the show's titular anti-hero. Her performance in the series nabbed her back-to-back nominations for a Fangoria Chainsaw Award and an iHorror Award nomination for Best Actress in a Horror Series. In 2018 DeLorenzo was the recipient of the Artemis Women in Action Next Wave award.
Since wrapping the final season of Ash Vs. Evil Dead, DeLorenzo had another dream come true when she landed a guest-starring role on the reboot of Will & Grace. She later recurred in the critically-acclaimed series Perpetual Grace, LTD., and won over audiences playing Kat Dennings' Jersey-Italian sister Barbra in the female-driven comedy Friendsgiving. DeLorenzo also was an associate producer and played a the role of Mandy in the dark comedy indie, The Disappearance of Toby Blackwood, and had a guest starring role on Tacoma FD.
DeLorenzo crossed more off her bucket list when she lent her vocal talents to various animated projects, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, King Tweety, and the Netflix animated children's series, Ask The StoryBots. DeLorenzo was thrilled to have the opportunity to vocally reprise her role of Kelly Maxwell along with star Bruce Campbell in Evil Dead: The Game.- David Nalbandian is an Argentine retired professional tennis player who played on the ATP Tour from 2000 until his retirement in 2013.
He was an all-court player and a clean ball-striker, hitting powerfully struck groundstrokes. He had a decent, but not particularly dominating service game compared to top 20 players. His signature play was the wide drive that swings out of court on both sides, low and spinning. He could take high balls on the backhand and forehand side and return them with acute angles and low trajectories and used these skills with great tactical intelligence. Nalbandian's trademark shot is his double-handed backhand down-the-line, which was regarded as one of the best double-handed backhands on the men's tour. He often used it to set up a point, by either hitting a clean winner or forcing a weak return from the opponent. Nalbandian is also known to be one of the game's best returners.
He reached the highest ranking in singles of world No. 3 in March 2006. Nalbandian was runner-up in the singles event at the 2002 Wimbledon Championships. During his career, he won 11 singles titles, including the Tennis Masters Cup in 2005 and two Masters 1000 tournaments. Nalbandian is the only Argentine player in history who ever reached the semifinals or better at all four Grand Slam tournaments and reached the men's singles final at Wimbledon.
He was a member of the Argentinian Davis Cup team who reached the finals of the World Group in 2006, 2008 and 2011. - Actress

Deepa Mehta is a transnational artist and a screenwriter, director, and producer whose work has been called "courageous", "provocative" and "breathtaking". Her visually lush and emotionally resonating films have played at every major international film festival; receiving numerous awards and accolades, and have been distributed around the world. Deepa was born in India and received a degree in philosophy from the University of New Delhi before immigrating to Canada. She began her career making documentaries in India.
In 1991, Deepa's first feature film Sam & Me, which stars Om Puri, won a Special Jury Mention in the Camera D'Or section at the Cannes Film Festival. Between 1992-1994 she directed two episodes of The Young Indiana Jones, produced by George Lucas for ABC. In 1993, Deepa directed her second feature film Camilla, a Canada-UK co-pro starring Jessica Tandy, Bridget Fonda, Elias Koteas, Maury Chaykin, Graham Greene, and Hume Cronyn. Fire, which Deepa wrote and directed, is the first film in her Elemental Trilogy (Fire, Earth, Water). Fire opened Perspective Canada at the 1996 Toronto International Film Festival, where it was runner-up for the People's Choice Most Popular Film Award. It played at the New York Film Festival and won many awards worldwide, including the Audience Award for Best Canadian Film at the Vancouver International Festival, the Special Jury Prize at the Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival and Silver Hugo Awards for Best Direction and Best Actress in Chicago.
Earth, based on Bapsi Sidhwa's acclaimed novel about Partition, Cracking India, is the second film in the Elemental Trilogy. It premiered as a Special Presentation at the 1998 Toronto International Film Festival, and won the Prix Premiere du Public at the Festival du Film Asiatique de Deauville and the Critics' Award at the Verona Schermi d'Amore International Film Festival. Bollywood/Hollywood was a change of pace. Written and directed by Deepa, it is a lighthearted, affectionate comedy about two mismatched lovers. It opened Perspective Canada at the 2002 Toronto International Film Festival and was a tremendous crossover box office success. It remains one of the top 10 grossing English language Canadian movies. In 2003 Deepa co-wrote and directed the Canada-UK co-pro The Republic of Love, based on a Carol Shields novel.
After a disrupted and hazardous production history Deepa's final film in the Elemental Trilogy Water opened the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival, and was the first Canadian film acquired by US distributor Fox Searchlight. Water is a powerful, hauntingly tragic story, set in Benares (Varanasi) about a child widow who at the age of eight is forced to enter a house of widows where she has to live for the rest of her life. The movie was to have been shot in India in 2000, but Hindu fundamentalists fomented riots, burnt sets, and issued death threats against the director and actors, forcing production to shut down and the filmmakers to leave the country. Water was successfully remounted in Sri Lanka and completed shooting in June 2004, and features many of India's most renowned actors.
Water was an enormous success. It was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the 79th Annual Academy Awards, and has screened at festivals around the world, winning many awards, and remains an audience favourite. The Vancouver Film Critics Circle named Deepa Mehta the Best Canadian Director of 2006. This fall (2015) is the 10th anniversary of Water's launch.
In 2006 Deepa made a documentary about domestic violence in Toronto's immigrant families called Let's Talk About It, which continues to be used in community outreach programs. She then thematically segued into the feature film Heaven On Earth, which explores arranged marriages and isolation. Starring Preity Zinta, the film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2008. It was awarded a Silver Hugo for Best Actress at the Chicago International Film Festival, and received the Best Screenplay Award at the Dubai International Film Festival. It also won the Youth Jury Award at the Schermi d'Amore Film Festival in Verona and the Audience Award at the River to River Florence Indian Film Festival.
In 2012, Deepa completed her epic cinematic adaptation of Salman Rushdie's famous novel about the history of India in the 20th century, Midnight's Children. A novel that won three Booker prizes. The movie, with 127 speaking parts, and covering five distinct time periods from 1917-1977, was a vast, ambitious undertaking and has screened all over the world, including the Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Vancouver International Film Festival, and the BFI London Film Festival. Midnight's Children was chosen as the Best Feature Film of 2013 at the Directors Guild of Canada's Awards.
Deepa's work as an artist, as a progressive voice about social issues, and her generous mentorship have often been recognized. She has received numerous honorary degrees and many awards and honours, among them: The Life of Distinction Award from the Canadian Centre of Diversity, The Excellence in the Arts Award from the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, and the Woman of Distinction, President's Award from the YMCA. She is a recipient of the Governor General's Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award for Film. Born January 1, 1928, to acting parents, Helen Westcott's show biz career began at the ripe old age of 4 when she performed on stage with her vaudevillian mother who played piano and drums. Her father was handsome Warner Bros. actor Gordon Westcott who appeared in second leads opposite a number of the top stars of the day including Bette Davis, Joe E. Brown, Joan Blondell, William Powell, James Cagney, etc. His untimely death in Hollywood at age 31 following a horse polo accident robbed Hollywood of a rising talent and deprived Helen, then age 7, of her father. Through her father's connections at Warners, young Helen was able to muster up a couple of pictures, earning a sizable role in the western Thunder Over Texas (1934) and as a little fairy in A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935).
After time out for education, Helen returned to films as a beautiful young ingénue in the late 40s. She appeared in both lead and second lead roles in a number of pictures, notably playing Gregory Peck's estranged wife in the classic The Gunfighter (1950), the lovely damsel-in-distress in Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1953), and the spurned wife of Aldo Ray in the steamy drama God's Little Acre (1958). She played plucky bobbysoxer co-eds in light comedies and musicals and went on to provide feminine diversion in "B" adventure showcases starring Errol Flynn, George Montgomery, Guy Madison, Lex Barker and Dale Robertson.
When her cinematic career started to slow down significantly in the late 50s, she pursued TV work and showed up in such popular dramas as Perry Mason (1957), Wanted: Dead or Alive (1958), Bonanza (1959), The Twilight Zone (1959) and M Squad (1957). She also returned to the live stage. A founding member of the Stage Society, Helen performed in such plays as "The Golden Fleece" (1968). In the 1970s, she could still be glimpsed occasionally on film and TV. She died of complications from cancer on March 17, 1998, at age 70, far away from the limelight. There were no reported survivors.- Imaani was born in 1972 in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England, UK. U.S. writer whose novel "The Catcher in the Rye" (1951) won critical acclaim and devoted admirers, especially among the post-World War II generation of college students. His entire corpus of published works consists of that one novel and 13 short stories, all originally written in the period 1948-59. Salinger was the son of a Jewish father and a mother who adopted Judaism, and, like Holden Caulfield, the hero of "The Catcher in the Rye", he grew up in New York City, attending public schools and a military academy. After brief periods at New York and Columbia universities, he devoted himself entirely to writing, and his stories began to appear in periodicals in 1940. After his return from service in the U.S. Army (1942-46), Salinger's name and writing style became increasingly associated with "The New Yorker" magazine, which published almost all of his later stories. Some of the best of these made use of his wartime experiences: "For Esmé - With Love and Squalor" (1950) describes a U.S. soldier's poignant encounter with two British children; "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" (1948) concerns the suicide of the sensitive, despairing veteran Seymour Glass. Major critical and popular recognition came with the publication of "The Catcher in the Rye", whose central character, a sensitive, rebellious adolescent, relates in authentic teenage idiom his flight from the "phony" adult world, his search for innocence and truth, and his final collapse on a psychiatrist's couch. The humor and colorful language of "The Catcher in the Rye" place it in the tradition of Mark Twain's "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and the stories of Ring Lardner, but its hero, like most of Salinger's child characters, views his life with an added dimension of precocious self-consciousness. "Nine Stories" (1953), a selection of Salinger's best work, added to his reputation. The reclusive habits of Salinger,an obsessively private man especially over the last half-century of his life, made his personal life a matter of speculation among devotees, while his small literary output was a subject of controversy among critics. "Franny and Zooey" (1961) brought together two earlier New Yorker stories; both deal with the Glass family, as do the two stories in "Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters"; and "Seymour: An Introduction" (1963).- Actor

Juanma Bajo Ulloa was born in Vitoria, a small town in northern Spain where he has set most of his movies.
From his childhood he has been in contact with the audiovisual business. His family owns a popular magazine in Vitoria specialized in photography.
At 14 he started making short movies in super-8 with his younger brother Eduardo. With titles like "Cruza la puerta" (1984), "El ultimo payaso" (1985), "A kien pueda interesar" (1986) or "100 aviones de papel" (1987) he won a huge number of awards in many festivals. Some producers of the spanish TV saw those movies and offered him to produce his next short movie called "Akixo" and shot in 16 mm.
In 1989 he shot his first short movie in 35 mm, "El reino de Victor" that won the Goya of the Spanish academy to the best short movie.
In 1991, after two years of writing, he produced and directed his first long movie "Alas de mariposa". Released in the Festival de Cine de San Sebastian it won the first prize. Later came 3 Goyas of the spanish academy (best first movie, actress and original screenplay). That movie caught the attention of the Spanish media and audience because of its shocking visual style and the crude description of a drama inside a problematic family.
In 1993, he directed his second movie, considered his best by many of his fans, "La madre muerta". It won awards in many international festivals like Venice and Montreal.
After the release of "La madre muerta" he started directing music videos for many popular spanish singers and groups like Joaquínn Sabina, Barricada or Golpes Bajos.
In 1996, his third movie, "Airbag", an action road-movie, became the biggest Spanish box-office hit of all time. However it disappointed some of his longtime fans who preferred the darkness of his first movies.
However this success, he has been unable to make any other movie in the last 8 years. He tried to adapt the spanish comic heroe "Capitán Trueno" but the producers turned him down. Others projects couldn't be financed due to creative differences with producers. In all those years he has make a living working in music videos and commercials.
In 2004 he shot in secret, and with his own money, his fourth movie, "Fragil", that will be released in 2005.- Juliana Donald was born on 1 January 1964 in Washington, District of Columbia, USA.
