- DirectorBarbra StreisandStarsBarbra StreisandJeff BridgesLauren BacallA shy, middle-aged professor enters into a romantic but non-physical relationship with an unlucky-in-love colleague.Totally ridiculous premise. Very loosely based off of a French film from the 1950's of the same name. It's very watchable. Bridges' character is a bit tedious and it's hard to accept his neurotic persona as authentic. Streisand is herself, as always. The real underrated comic genius of the film, however, is Lauren Bacall, who is hilarious. Not a great film, but good watching for those who like this genre.
- DirectorFritz KierschStarsJames SpaderKim RichardsPaul MonesThe new kid in school must battle a gang of street toughs after stealing the gang leader's girl.Campy goodness! An extremely cliche film, that I still manage to enjoy. Best part about the film is James Spader's sex appeal. Other than that, this film doesn't have much to offer other than some insight into 1980's youths' romanticizing of the blue-collar. The music is also fun. Can't find that Marianne Faithful song anywhere ("Love Hurts")!
- DirectorJames FoleyStarsAidan QuinnDaryl HannahKenneth McMillanA motorbike riding loner rebel on the high school football team wins a date with a cute, rich cheerleader. At the high school dance, her boyfriend's behavior leads to a breakup - opening doors.Aiden Quinn's first major role and the lead protagonist. In his role as Johnny Rourke he is extremely compelling and has magnetic charisma. Also, the choice to shoot on location in an East Coast industrial town really made the movie better than it otherwise would have been; the town itself is like its own character and really serves well to set the claustrophobic tone for the entire movie.
- DirectorSusan SeidelmanStarsRosanna ArquetteMadonnaAidan QuinnA bored New Jersey suburban housewife's fascination with a free-spirited woman she has read about in the personal columns leads to her being mistaken for the woman herself.A very charming--albeit dated--film from the mid-1980s. Aiden Quinn is smoking hot and irresistible on screen. Altogether this film is held together by a well-written and very funny screenplay. This film is full of great minor touches that really make it work. It's not Citizen Kane, but it totally succeeds at being a great 1980s comedy!
- DirectorGriffin DunneStarsSandra BullockNicole KidmanStockard ChanningTwo witch sisters, raised by their eccentric aunts in a small town, face closed-minded prejudice and a curse which threatens to prevent them ever finding lasting love. One of those "power of the sisterhood" movies from the 1990s. I don't understand why this movie is so popular; maybe it played a lot on TV? I know my sister had the VHS tape. Also, why were witches such a reoccurring theme in movies and television during the 1990s and early 2000s? Anyway, I only really watched this movie because I knew Aiden Quinn was in it.
- DirectorBarbra StreisandStarsBarbra StreisandNick NolteBlythe DannerA troubled man talks to his suicidal sister's psychiatrist about their family history and falls in love with her in the process.God, I thought this movie would never end!! Sure did drag on for way too long. A melodrama that manages to simultaneously avoid and embrace various cliches. Nolte and Streisand don't have much screen chemistry either, which makes the movie all the more irredeemable. Also, Streisand's fingernails were terrifying--I'm pretty sure that was not a classy style during the early 90s (or ever) (Am I wrong about this??).
- DirectorMichael HoffmanStarsMichelle PfeifferGeorge ClooneyMae WhitmanThe lives of two strangers and their young children unexpectedly intersect on one hectic, stressful day in New York City. The concept for this film's plot is great, however, the constant foils created by the two children in the film make the film extremely annoying to watch. All I kept thinking was how absurd--and unfunny--the constant "accidents" were. I just wanted to strangle those kids--kids which could have been entertaining and charming on screen, but were instead tiny, unrealistic demons. I basically just wanted to give them a whoopin' every minute they were in frame. Clooney and Pfeiffer have really great charisma and chemistry on screen and are a joy to watch, but don't quite manage to redeem the film as a whole.
- DirectorÉdouard MolinaroStarsUgo TognazziMichel SerraultClaire MaurierThe manager of a Saint-Tropez nightclub featuring drag entertainment, and his star attraction, are a gay couple. Madness ensues when his straight son brings home a fiancée and her ultra-conservative parents to meet them.Hilarious. My second time watching this. As an adult the humor made a lot more sense... Great film that has stood the test of time; it's still funny and still deeply relevant.
- DirectorRoy Del RuthStarsJames CagneyMae ClarkeMargaret LindsayA former gangster makes it big in Hollywood, but his old life catches up with him.
- CreatorLarry DavidJerry SeinfeldStarsJerry SeinfeldJulia Louis-DreyfusMichael RichardsThe continuing misadventures of neurotic New York City stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld and his equally neurotic New York City friends.
- DirectorCary Joji FukunagaStarsMia WasikowskaMichael FassbenderJamie BellA mousy governess who softens the heart of her employer soon discovers that he's hiding a terrible secret.Second time watching. Better than I remember it being. I think the mini-series with Toby Stephens is the best adaptation so far. But Fassbender does a good job in this. Wasikowska was also better than I remember liking her upon my initial viewing.
- DirectorJoe WrightStarsKeira KnightleyMatthew MacfadyenBrenda BlethynSparks fly when spirited Elizabeth Bennet meets single, rich, and proud Mr. Darcy. But Mr. Darcy reluctantly finds himself falling in love with a woman beneath his class. Can each overcome their own pride and prejudice?Visually stunning (an earthy palette), a beautiful original score, and not terrible performances. However, the script is atrocious. Dumbs down the story and dialogue for what the script writers must have thought were a bunch of dodos! People don't need to have things "made more simple/consumable" for them. This is why the 1995 mini-series adaptation will remain the best and unrivaled of all P&P adaptations--because it is retains the complexity of Austen's original and is faithful to the characters (whom we all love dearly).
- StarsColin FirthJennifer EhleSusannah HarkerWhile the arrival of wealthy gentlemen sends her marriage-minded mother into a frenzy, willful and opinionated Elizabeth Bennet matches wits with haughty Mr. Darcy.I watch this every year at least once, and I swear it helps me to be a good person. Everyone should watch this adaptation (the best and unrivaled) and read the novel. One of my favorite pieces of film-making.
