One of the hottest stars of the mid-1980s, Virginia Madsen has since played a variety of roles that have cemented her reputation as a fantastic actress who can adapt to any part.
Virginia was born in Chicago, Illinois, and belongs to an acting family -- with her brother, Michael Madsen, also an actor, and her mother, Elaine Madsen (née Melson), an Emmy-winning writer, poet, and producer. Her paternal grandparents were Danish, and her father, Calvin Madsen, was a firefighter. Audiences first caught a glimpse of her as "Princess Irulan" in the 1984 science fiction epic Dune (1984). She followed that up with Electric Dreams (1984); however, it was in 1986 that Virginia captured the hearts of the audience with an intense portrayal of a Catholic school girl who fell in love with a boy from a prison camp in Duncan Gibbins' Fire with Fire (1986). Virginia played the role of "Lisa" and her co-star was Craig Sheffer, who played Lisa's love interest, "Joe Fisk". Kari Wuhrer also made an appearance as Virginia's best friend, "Gloria". Fire with Fire (1986) was a low-budget production, starring a bunch of fresh faces who were till then-unknown to Hollywood. However, the movie was a success and elevated its three young stars overnight. Virginia has never looked back since.
Not only did she receive amazing reviews for her Academy Award and Golden Globe nominated performance in Alexander Payne's hit film, Sideways (2004), but this Independent Spirit Award-winning actress has an illustrious resume of roles alongside the most notable and respected actors in the business.
Also on Virginia's slate is her production company, with partner Karly Meola, called "Title IX Productions". Their first project was the documentary I Know a Woman Like That (2009), which previewed at the Phoenix Film Festival in April 2009 and premiered at the Chicago Film Festival in October 2009. The doc was directed by Virginia's mother, Elaine Madsen, about the lives of extraordinary women ages 64-94. Next in the company's lineup is the documentary Fighting Gravity (2010), about women ski jumpers' ongoing battle for the right to compete in the 2010 Winter Olympics. Title IX will team up with "Empire 8 Productions" and Vancouver-based "Screen Siren" on the project. The duo also has several projects in development that they're shopping around for financing including screenwriters Sebastian Gutierrez's screen adaptation of Martha O'Connor's novel "The Bitch Posse" and a remake of the 1984 film Electric Dreams (1984), in which Virginia appeared.- Actress

Melina Chiaverini is an Australian-born, Greek-Italian award-winning actress and writer living in Beverly Hills, California. The youngest of 4 children, Melina is the only child not named after a grandparent. Instead, she was christened after Greek icon (actress and politician), Melina Mercouri, and confesses "I've been chasing my name ever since."
Awarded the "T.V. Week" Acting Scholarship, Melina studied drama at The Australian Film & Television Academy, and later at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (Sydney), appearing in film and television roles, and on the Sydney stage with great success as Desdemona in "Othello" (CUT Theatre); Célimène in "The Misanthrope" (Hair of the Dog); Antigone in "Antigone" (CUT Theatre); Linda Rotunda in "Savage in Limbo" (Hair of the Dog); Kitty Hawkins in "The Bold & The Reckless" (Sydney Fringe Festival - Winner, Best Actress); and the Nurse in "I've Had My Life" (Short 'n Sweet Festival), where Melina also made her directorial debut, and began writing for film.
After winning a U.S. Green Card and moving to America, Melina continued screenwriting through the UCLA Extension Writers' Program, whilst studying acting at The Beverly Hills Playhouse. She appeared as Marilyn Monroe in Justin Lin's "Finishing the Game: The Search for a New Bruce Lee", and was seen on the television series "Las Vegas."
Upon receiving the Women in Film Acting Mentorship, Melina wrote the short screenplay "Ingénue d'Or" which placed in the Shore Scripts Screenplay Competition, and was soon after produced (directed by, and starring Melina), winning the top prize "Best International Short Film" at the Berlin Shorts Film Festival (2021), and "Honorable Mention" at the Tokyo International Short Film Festival (2021), plus Melina won "Best Actress in a Drama" at the Best Actor and Director Awards, New York (2021.)
In 2018 Melina began the landmark collaboration with Mr. Spyros Mercouris to write the feature film biopic screenplay of his famous sister, Melina Mercouri. Mr. Mercouris called Melina Chiaverini "the chosen one", as he selectively passed the torch to her to tell his beloved sister's story. He felt Melina embodied his sister's spirit, and affectionately gave her the moniker "Melina B." Before his sad passing in 2018 (RIP), it was one Mr. Mercouris' last wishes that this film be made for his sister, believing she (and husband/director, Jules Dassin) would have wanted it. Indeed, Melina Mercouri herself once said her greatest fear was not to be remembered. As such, today, Melina, who owns the rights to this story, has the ongoing endorsement and exclusive support of the Mercouris family.
2020/21 is the 100th anniversary of Melina Mercouri's birth. It's also the year the feature screenplay "MELINA MERCOURI: I Was Born Greek" won the prestigious Scriptapalooza Fellowship. Since then, it has won/placed in over 20 additional international screenwriting competitions, including: "Best International Screenplay" at the London Independent Film Festival (2021); "Best Screenplay" at the London Greek Film Festival (2021); "Best Screenplay" at the Cyprus International Film Festival (2021); "Best Feature Script" at the Hollywood Gala Awards (2021); "Best Feature Screenplay" at the Venice Film Awards (2021); "Best Biographical Feature Script" at the Silk Road Film Awards, Cannes (2021); "Best Feature Script" at the Cult Critic Movie Awards (2021); and was most recently described as "one of the best spec. scripts out there" (Nicholl Fellowship, 2021.)
Melina Chiaverini sits as a Member on the SAG/AFTRA Honors and Tributes (HATS) Committee, Los Angeles, and is an ongoing Sponsor of the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival (recently authoring the Melina Mercouri 100 Years Tribute piece, and sponsoring the LAGFF Special "Stella" Screening in collaboration with the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation.)
Melina is currently developing the Melina Mercouri feature film project, whilst writing its limited series, and her romantic comedy feature, "Pet Agent."
Trivia: Melina speaks 3 languages (English, Greek & Italian.) She placed 1st in Australia (English/Poetry & Social Studies) in her school finals. The 1st monologue she ever delivered on stage was the "Our Father" (The Lord's Prayer, recited in Greek, age 7); the most recent was her father's eulogy. Melina enjoys traveling and photography, excels at logic games, writes poetry; and loves singing/dance and karate. She became a vegan in 2017, is an avid animal rights activist, and boasts she makes the best vegan moussaka this side of Athens, Greece.
Quotes about Melina: Pulitzer Prize and Academy Award winning writer, John Patrick Shanley described Melina as "Sex in Technicolor" who writes "like a poet by some Summer sea."
3 things you wouldn't tell by looking at Melina's head shot: (i) She holds 3 degrees, including a law degree from The University of Sydney Law School (Honors/Valedictorian), and was sworn in as an attorney of the Supreme Court of New South Wales (Australia); (ii) She knows no subtlety; (iii) The rest is a disguise.- Lara Cox was born on 6 March 1978 in Canberra, Australia. Born to a huge, poor family in Soho in London's West End, Jessie Matthews became a big stage star in the late 1920s and 1930s, enjoying some crossover success in musical films. Her career never quite relaunched after the war, though, but she staged a comeback when she replaced the lead actress in the radio soap "Mrs Dale's Diary" in the 1960s. Her life was blighted by breakdowns of relationships and her own struggles with bad health and insecurity, and she wound up, amazingly, buried in an unmarked grave (only rectified after a TV documentary in the late 1980s brought this to light--beg, steal or borrow a copy of BBC's Timewatch (1982) documentary series episode "Catch A Fallen Star"). An amazing life.- Cynthia Addai-Robinson is an English-born actress. She was born in London; her mother is from Ghana and her father is an United States citizen. She moved to US when she was four, and was raised by her mother in a suburb of Washington, DC. She is a graduate of Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, MD, and studied at the Tisch School of the Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater. In addition, she trained at Lee Strasberg Theater Institute and in dance forms ballet, jazz, tap. She received Navy Seal and New Zealand Special Forces training during the filming of Spartacus: War of the Damned.
- Andrea Alexis Parker learned to walk on the sand in Newport Beach, California. Andrea's natural grace led her beloved mother Karen Macaulay to enroll Andrea in ballet lessons at 5 years old, soon turning to serious classical training by the age of 8. By the time she was 11, Andrea's passion for dance was so strong that she began to leave home each summer to continue her formal ballet training in NYC and San Francisco. At 15, it was the thrill of her very young life to be invited to train full time with the San Francisco Ballet School and perform year-round with The San Francisco Ballet Company. Moving away from home to dance at The War Memorial Opera House while also touring with SFB was a dream come true, but life had other plans for Andrea.
Forced to retire from ballet at 18 when her 5'10" height (6'3" on point!) proved problematic for the lesser stature of the male ballet dancers, Andrea moved home to Los Angeles, where she studied and transitioned to contemporary dance. Andrea found herself a dance agent and began to book countless commercials, industrials, videos and dance gigs including MARRIED WITH CHILDREN. Her talent took her from LA to New York to Europe as a professional dancer, until she returned to Hollywood to study acting.
While continuing her studies, Andrea performed in several plays in Los Angeles where her talent was recognized by the legendary Susan Smith, eponymous head of what was then the hottest boutique talent agency in town. Andrea soon had her very first acting audition, and booked the role in what would become the classic Emmy-award winning SEINFELD episode "The Contest" and she never looked back as her acting took center stage.
Andrea's acting career took off when she was cast as George Clooney's love interest for the first two seasons of the global phenomenon hit series E.R. Next, she was set as the co-lead opposite David James Elliott in J.A.G. but faced a devastating disappointment when the network decided to go in another direction, replacing her after the pilot episode. Never one to quit anything, Andrea faced down those same network executives the very next season, landing her iconic starring role as Miss Parker in THE PRETENDER.
Andrea took the opportunity to learn fight choreography from some of the world's best stunt women, and learned how to handle firearms and shoot by the LAPD, bringing maximum authenticity to the boss lady roles she so often plays. She trained in stunt driving with world renowned stunt driving coach Bobby Ore, and held her own in the Toyota Celebrity Long Beach Grand Prix.
Andrea showed her incredible versatility as an actress when she shifted from drama to comedy, starring for 4 seasons as the gorgeous Lydia Weston in the underrated ABC ensemble comedy LESS THAN PERFECT, alongside such stars as Zachary Levi, Eric Roberts, Patrick Warburton, Sherry Shepherd, Will Sasso and Andy Dick.
Andrea was thrilled to join the cast of long running hit series DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES in its final season, and most recently held dual roles as twin sisters Mary Drake and Jessica DiLaurentis in the wildly popular Freeform series PRETTY LITTLE LIARS.
Andrea lives in Los Angeles and is married to the man of her dreams, film producer Michael Birnbaum. - Freema Agyeman is a British actress who is known for playing Martha Jones in the BBC science fiction series Doctor Who (2007-2010), Alesha Phillips in crime procedural drama Law & Order: UK (2009-2011), Amanita Caplan in the Netflix science fiction drama Sense8 (2015-2018), and Dr. Helen Sharpe in the NBC medical procedural series New Amsterdam (2018-2022).

Dorothy Gish was born into a broken family where her restless father James Lee Gish was frequently absent. Mary Robinson McConnell a.k.a. Mary Gish, her mother, had entered into acting to make money to support the family. As soon as Dorothy and her sister Lillian Gish were old enough, they became part of the act. To supplement their income, the two sisters also posed for pictures and acted in melodramas of the time. In 1912 they met fellow child actress Mary Pickford, and she got them extra work with Biograph Pictures. Director D.W. Griffith was impressed by both the girls and cast them in An Unseen Enemy (1912), their first picture. Dorothy would go on to star in over 100 two-reel films and features over the years. She would appear in the very successful Judith of Bethulia (1914) with Blanche Sweet. She and her sister Lillian made a number of films together, including the extremely successful Hearts of the World (1918) and Orphans of the Storm (1921). In both films Dorothy would play French girls, but in different periods of time. Lillian would try her hand at directing, with a movie called Remodeling Her Husband (1920), which starred Dorothy and an actor named James Rennie, whom Dorothy would marry and later divorce. While she would excel in pantomime and light comedy, her popularity would always be overshadowed by that of her sister Lillian, who was considered to be one the silent screen's greatest stars. Dorothy would only make a handful of movies in the 1920s, and in Romola (1924)--a costume picture about Italy in the Middle Ages--she would again co-star with Lillian. By 1926 Dorothy had moved to England, where she would star as the title role in Nell Gwyn (1926). Her last silent film would be Madame Pompadour (1927). In 1928 Dorothy would retire from the screen, except for a few occasional roles, and enjoy a long career on the stage.- Lindsey McKeon began her career at the age of 12 when her mother's agent suggested she take an acting class. It would seem that 2004, the year of her 18th birthday, will be remembered as pivotal for Emmy Rossum due to her appearance in two very different films, The Day After Tomorrow (2004) and The Phantom of the Opera (2004). Emmy's performance in the latter film gained her a Golden Globe nomination.
Emmanuelle Grey Rossum was born in New York City, where she was raised by her single mother, Cheryl Rossum, a corporate photographer (she has only met her father a few times). Her mother is of Russian Jewish descent and her father has English and Dutch ancestry. After passing an audition at the Metropolitan Opera when she was 7 years old, Rossum performed in more than 20 operas in six different languages at Lincoln Center, alongside such figures as Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti. She was directed by Franco Zeffirelli in "Carmen." She left the opera when she entered her teenage years, as she had grown too tall to perform as a child. Emmy also appeared in a Carnegie Hall presentation of "The Damnation of Faust." She graduated from the Spence School, a private institution in Manhattan, in 1996 and then earned a high school diploma when 15 years old by taking online extension courses offered by Stanford University (Education Program for Gifted Youth). She later enrolled at Columbia University and studied art history and French.
In a change of venue, Emmy created the role of Abigail Williams in the daytime soap opera As the World Turns (1956) in 1997 and branched out in performances in the made-for-television movies Genius (1999) and The Audrey Hepburn Story (2000), in which she played the title character as a young teenager. Other television work included Snoops (1999), Law & Order (1990), and The Practice (1997).
Emmy made her theatrical feature debut in the indie film Songcatcher (2000), with her good friend Rhoda Griffis, which won the Special Jury Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2000. Rossum received an Independent Spirit Award nomination in the category of Best Debut Performance for her performance as an Appalachian orphan. She played an aspiring songwriter (the title character) in the romantic comedy Nola (2003). Cast as the ill-fated daughter of a small-business owner in Clint Eastwood's Mystic River (2003), she projected an aura of innocence that made her character's tragic death memorable and heartbreaking. This was her first major studio film.
After six months of filming her role as the fresh-faced but highly intelligent teenage damsel in distress The Day After Tomorrow (2004) in Montreal, she returned to New York and screen-tested for the role of Christine in The Phantom of the Opera (2004) in full costume and makeup, and was finally selected for the part by Andrew Lloyd Webber after singing for him at his home. Although she was surprised to be chosen ahead of many better-known and older actresses considered for the part, the combination of her vulnerable, fragile beauty and fine, classically trained singing voice ultimately proved that she was perfectly cast. In preparation for the role, she took ballet classes for two months and started polishing her singing. Emmy has commented that, in her approach to acting, she draws heavily upon her own experiences, so she visited locations in Paris and conjured up what she terms "past memories" to draw upon in making her performance emotionally realistic. She stood on the roof of the Opéra Garnier, where Christine sings "All I Ask of You," and went underneath the opera house, where there is actually a gloomy, dark lake. She studied Degas's paintings of ballerinas in the Musée d'Orsay to learn how to stand like one.
Her next project Poseidon (2006) was a mainstream effort, but since its release, she has been more true to advice she obtained from Sean Penn when making Mystic River (2003), that she should be picky and only accept roles that are fun to do, such as Dragonball Evolution (2009).- Kiana Tom was born on 14 March 1964 in Los Angeles County, California, USA. And although her singing "debut" was a bust, L.A. did make it into the chorus-where she discovered a love of dance ... and of having an audience! In 1983, L.A.'s agent sent her to her first acting audition for the hit movie, Flashdance. She continued to expand her modeling and commercial work while studying acting in Chicago-and later in Atlanta, after moving there in 1985. A few years after her move, she had the opportunity to work in New York City as the lead in an off-off Broadway production of Barefoot in the Park. The interest from agents led to a 2 1/2-year stay in New York where she continued her training and work. She possessed the same tiny frame and fervid temperament as Brazilian Carmen Miranda and, for most her career, Puerto Rican singer/dancer Olga San Juan, like Miranda, was a welcome distraction by American audiences. A flavorful, scene-stealing personality who delightfully mangled the English language, she decorated a number of war-era and post-war musicals and comedy escapism with her special brand of comedy.
Dubbed the "Puerto Rican Pepperpot" during her heyday, Olga was born in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. Her family returned to Puerto Rico when she was three, but came back to America after a few years and, this time, settled in "Spanish Harlem". By age 3, she was taking dancing lessons and was almost immediately thrust into the limelight by her mother. By age 11, she (and five other young girls) had executed the Fandango for Franklin D. Roosevelt at the White House. As a teenager, Olga performed at such hot spots as the El Morocco and the Copacabana and, subsequently, earned pay as a dancer with famed jazz and mambo musician, Tito Puente, who by then had earned the title of "The King of Latin Music".
Gaining momentum appearing on radio, Olga formed a popular night club act, Olga San Juan and Her Rumba Band, that eventually caught the eye of Paramount Studios. Putting her under contract, Olga, as an added incentive to stand out, decided to become the first dyed-blonde Latin movie spitfire. Making her film debut in the tropical musical short, Caribbean Romance (1943), her second short film, Bombalera (1945), earned itself an Academy Award nomination. In this, Olga was billed, appropriately enough, as "The Cuban Cyclone". She was front and center in her third short, The Little Witch (1945), a musical romance in which she virtually played herself as a night club singer.
Her feature film debut came in the form of Rainbow Island (1944), a typical South Seas vehicle for sarong-wearing Dorothy Lamour. Soon, Olga was seen playing "other woman" supports. Arguably, her finest hour came alongside Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire in her first post-war picture, Blue Skies (1946), adding zest to such songs as "You'd Be Surprised", "Heat Wave" and "I'll See You in C-U-B-A". While the boys are vying for the romantic attentions of gorgeous Joan Caulfield, Olga is paired up, engagingly, with another comedy scene-stealer, Billy De Wolfe.
Constricted in films by her heavy accent, Olga nevertheless became an ethnic commodity for Paramount and, for the rest of the post-war decade, was enjoyably featured in light "B" material. She stood out playing Mary Hatcher's comedy sidekick and fellow wannabe movie star in Variety Girl (1947), which seemed more of an excuse to feature Paramount's huge roster of superstars in cameo bits; was borrowed by Universal to juice up the musical proceedings, opposite geeky Donald O'Connor, in the comedy, Are You with It? (1948); played a mortal second fiddle to goddess Ava Gardner in One Touch of Venus (1948); offered silly distraction in skating star Sonja Henie's final Hollywood ice extravaganza -- The Countess of Monte Cristo (1948); and lent funny, flashy vulgarity to one of Preston Sturges' lesser outings, The Beautiful Blonde from Bashful Bend (1949), a Betty Grable vehicle for Twentieth Century-Fox.
During this period (1948), Olga had met and married actor Edmond O'Brien. The couple had three children, two girls and a boy. Her last hurrah in the industry came, by accident, when famed lyricist Alan Jay Lerner happened to hear her sing at a festive Hollywood gathering and offered her one of the leads (Jennifer Rumson) in his Broadway-bound musical, "Paint Your Wagon", in 1951. The show was a flop, running just eight months, and Olga left the cast before the run ended, after becoming pregnant with her second child. In the aftermath, Olga, a strict Roman Catholic, decided to concentrate on marriage and family. Aside from a smattering of TV shows, she completely retired. On film, she was briefly glimpsed only two times more, both of them being her husband's vehicles, The Barefoot Contessa (1954), in which he won the "supporting actor" Oscar, and The 3rd Voice (1960).
Settling in West Los Angeles, Olga suffered a stroke in the 1970s and slowly declined in health, from that point on. Divorced from O'Brien in 1976, their children all involved themselves in different facets of the business. Daughter Maria O'Brien became an actress in her own right and son Brendan O'Brien also delved into acting as well as writing and guitar-playing. Other daughter, Bridget O'Brien Adelman, became a TV producer. After decades of being out of the news, it was reported in January of 2009 that Olga had died at a Burbank hospital of kidney failure, following an extended illness. She was 81.- Actress

Austrian leading lady Nadja Tiller reached the height of her popularity during the 1950s and 60s. She was the daughter of stage actor and director Anton Tiller and his wife, the opera singer Erika Körner (1902-1979). It seemed that Nadja's career had been marked out for her early on: she was to take over a hairdressing establishment run by her grandparents in Danzig (now Gdansk). However, the war put paid to this. In 1945, having found a new calling, she enrolled at the Max-Reinhardt Seminar to take dance, ballet and drama classes while working part time as a mannequin in a hat salon. She completed her studies four years later at the University of Music and Performing Arts. That same year, Tiller was voted Miss Austria (she won again in 1951) which helped to secure her first theatrical engagement in the Theater in der Josefstadt. Her screen debut, a small part in the Beethoven biopic Eroica (1949) was cut, but she soon after made her first appearance in Märchen vom Glück (1949), a romantic musical comedy starring matinee idol O.W. Fischer. Tiller then played a rival to Hildegard Knef for the affections of Hardy Krüger in the melodrama Illusion in Moll (1952) and proceeded with leading roles in several undemanding lightweight farces like Einmal keine Sorgen haben (1953), Die Kaiserin von China (1953) and Mädchen mit Zukunft (1954). At his point in her career, Tiller's stock-in-trade heroines were most often worldly flirts or fashionable sophisticates.
Her fortunes took an upswing under the director Rolf Thiele who provided her with more challenging material in dramas like Friederike von Barring (1956), Lulu (1962) (both title roles) and, as an Egyptian dancer, in El Hakim (1957). In the repressed and conservative 50s, her breakout role as the titular prostitute in Thiele's socially conscious masterpiece Rosemary (1958) was viewed by some as scandalous and others as sensational, as it exposed the hypocrisy of people and institutions. Rosemary won not only the German Film Critics Award but also a Golden Globe in the U.S. for Best Foreign Language Film. Nadja Tiller emerged from this venture as an international star.
By the late 50s, Tiller featured prominently in many French, Italian, English and American productions, opposite stars like Jean Marais (King on Horseback (1958) and Killer Spy (1965)), Jean Gabin (The Night Affair (1958)), Jean-Paul Belmondo (Tender Scoundrel (1966)), Rod Steiger (The World in My Pocket (1961)) and Yul Brynner (The Poppy Is Also a Flower (1966)). From the mid-70s, having transitioned to character roles, she alternated appearances on television with theatrical engagements in Lübeck, Berlin, Hamburg and Vienna, often in boulevard dramas.
From 1956 until his death in 2011, Tiller was married to the actor Walter Giller. Dubbed the 'Traumpaar' (dream couple), they appeared in several films together, their last as two feisty pensioners in the comedy Dinosaurier (2009). Tiller passed away in a Hamburg retirement home on February 21 2023 at the age of 93.- Leigh Lombardi was born on 11 August 1955.
