The First One Hundred Noted Men and Women of the Screen (1920 list)

by cts-6 | created - 15 Oct 2014 | updated - 14 Apr 2015 | Public

The book "The First One Hundred Noted Men and Women of the Screen" was compiled by Carolyn Lowrey and published in 1920 by Moffat, Yard and Company. It includes one photograph and a short biography of each person. (Some of the "biographies" are heavily fictionalized versions from studio PR offices.) There are many very important film pioneers whose careers were well established by 1920, but who are missing from Lowrey's list -- Gilbert "Bronco Billy" Anderson, Charlie Chaplin, Marguerite Clark, William Kennedy Laurie Dickson, Pauline Frederick, the Lillian and Dorothy Gish, Carl Laemmle, Jesse L. Lasky, Florence Lawrence, Edwin S. Porter and Adolph Zukor to name just a few. Lowrey's list is still interesting since it provides a look at the people that one writer of the time considered to be the most important movie people of 1920.
