- DirectorMark GoldblattStarsTreat WilliamsJoe PiscopoLindsay FrostA cop is killed investigating a strange case of resurrected corpses. His partner and a pathologist resurrect him, but he only has a limited time before he starts to decompose, and he uses it to chase down the diabolical man who killed him.I bought this movie based on the silly poster, and boy am I glad I did. Few movies on this list merit second or third viewings but this one takes the cake - I could watch this movie dozens of times. Any description I could give would not do it justice, all I'll say is: Zombie Machine Gun Fight!!! It is FUNNY with a capital F. Genuine gem of the 1980's genre mash-ups..
- DirectorAndy SidarisStarsSteve BondDona SpeirHope Marie CarltonAfter his brother got eliminated in Hard Ticket to Hawaii (1987), a crime lord triggers a ruthless hunt against all agents responsible, and the remaining agents will have to avenge their fallen comrades.Disguised as an action movie, this is actually a showcase for a bunch of supermodels bouncing around... pure moronic fun times.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsRoddy PiperKeith DavidMeg FosterThey influence our decisions without us knowing it. They numb our senses without us feeling it. They control our lives without us realizing it. They live. This has the longest and funniest hand to hand fight sequence - it comes out of nowhere! - and all because Keith David refuses to put on Rowdy Roddy Piper's sunglasses.
- DirectorJon TurteltaubStarsPeter PaulDavid PaulMartin MullTwo truckers hired to transport toxic waste across the country get caught up with a teen genius who stows away on their truck.Lucky, lucky chicken bone. This is an endlessly quotable Barbarian Brothers classic, probably the most funnest movie ever made. If you like this move be sure to check out Double Take, Twin Sitters, and of course, The Barbarians.
- DirectorKathryn BigelowStarsPatrick SwayzeKeanu ReevesGary BuseyAn F.B.I. Agent goes undercover to catch a gang of surfers who may be bank robbers. It's almost as if the script to this movie has a life of it's own, it's so incredibly dumb and campy that it transcends time and space. I can't imagine that the recent remake could top the inherent hilarity of the original.
- DirectorFrank MarshallStarsLaura LinneyTim CurryDylan WalshWhen an expedition to the African Congo ends in disaster, a new team is assembled to find out what went wrong. The special effects, endless soundstage, and the way Tim Curry tiptoes with diamonds make this movie really really hard to take seriously. By today's standards this movie is the definition of laughable.
- DirectorPhillip NoyceStarsDenzel WashingtonAngelina JolieQueen LatifahA quadriplegic ex-homicide detective and his partner try to track down a serial killer who is terrorizing New York City. It's never ever cool to make fun of the disabled, but Denzel Washington makes it seem so effortless. Although the real stars are the pouts, the face twitches, and the way over-the-top musical scoring. This movie leaves so many loopholes that you might forget there's even a plot.
- DirectorDavid LynchStarsRichard FarnsworthSissy SpacekJane Galloway HeitzAn old man makes a long journey by lawnmower to mend his relationship with an ill brother.I was tricked into seeing this movie when it came out and it's since become one of my all time favorite movie experiences. Aside from being a Disney film directed by David Lynch, the entire premise to this film is hilarious - a man travels cross country on his lil' tractor to visit an estranged, nonplussed Harry Dean Stanton..
- DirectorRoger ChristianStarsJohn TravoltaForest WhitakerBarry PepperIt's the year 3000 A.D., and the Earth is lost to the alien race of Psychlos. Humanity is enslaved by these gold-thirsty tyrants, who are unaware that their 'man-animals' are about to ignite the rebellion of a lifetime.Scientology is the ultimate punchline... be careful though, or you might get vertigo trying to watch this movie.
- DirectorJoe CharbanicStarsJames SpaderKeanu ReevesMarisa TomeiDavid Allen Griffin is a cool killer- time and time again, he chooses a female victim, studies her for weeks till he knows her routine to the smallest detail, makes meticulous preparations using his forensic knowledge to gain entry when she's quite alone, subdues her and administers a long, torturous death. Joel Campbell got so frustrated by his failure to capture Griffin in Los Angeles, that he quit the FBI, moved to Chicago, and remains in psychiatric therapy, unable to function normally. Then he realizes, when opening his mail very late, that a new murder victim is Griffin's, and the killer sent him pictures of her. Campbell reports this to the police, but is unwilling to join them in the search, suggesting Griffin is too slick and clever; yet he won't get out of it that easily. They should've stopped making this movie at the brainstorming stage when someone started explaining the premise. . it's pretty much only watchable if you've got the inclination to perform your own version of MST3K.. probably wise of Keanu Reeves to try to wriggle out of appearing in it despite having already filmed it..
- DirectorStephen SommersStarsBrendan FraserRachel WeiszJohn HannahThe mummified body of Imhotep is shipped to a museum in London, where he once again wakes and begins his campaign of rage and terror. This is another movie that astonishes me. Was there really such a great demand for another Mummy movie? I could watch Rachel Weisz's death scene over and over again, it's got such great comedic timing.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodIan McKellenOrlando BloomA meek Hobbit from the Shire and eight companions set out on a journey to destroy the powerful One Ring and save Middle-earth from the Dark Lord Sauron. The 'special' effects might give some perspective on how far CGI has come in the past 15 years, Elijah Wood is the feepiest protagonist ever, and it's got some excellent attempts at green screen acting - all of Peter Jackson's movies are comedies, actually.
- DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsMel GibsonJoaquin PhoenixRory CulkinA widowed former reverend living with his children and brother on a Pennsylvania farm finds mysterious crop circles in their fields, which suggests something more frightening to come.If you haven't seen Signs already, you should know that interstellar beings are way way way smarter than they are depicted in this movie - Replace Mel Gibson with Mel Brooks and this would have been a box office smash forever.
- DirectorTommy WiseauStarsTommy WiseauJuliette DanielleGreg SesteroIn San Francisco, an amiable banker's seemingly perfect life is turned upside down when his deceitful fiancée embarks on an affair with his best friend.Self-explanatory.
- DirectorDavid R. EllisStarsKim BasingerChris EvansJason StathamA young man receives an emergency phone call on his cell phone from an older woman. The catch? The woman claims to have been kidnapped, and the kidnappers have targeted her husband and child next.Seeing a young Captain America frantically try to rescue a strange woman he's never met by escalating from one implausible scenario to the next is oh so gratifying. This movie does not stand the test of time at all, and thank goodness, because it's super funny.
- DirectorPeter WintherStarsNoah WyleSonya WalgerBob NewhartA bookworm becomes the librarian. Same night a magical spear gets stolen and he's off to get some real life experience around the globe on his quest for the spear - starting with being thrown off a plane over Amazonas by his cute helper. This is camp at it's made-for-TV finest. Pretty much plays out like an extended 1980s D&D cartoon with a bit more stilted acting and soft lighting. So many things about this movie made me uncomfortable, but in a good way.
- DirectorDavid R. EllisStarsSamuel L. JacksonJulianna MarguliesNathan PhillipsAn FBI agent takes on a plane full of deadly venomous snakes, deliberately released to kill a witness being flown from Honolulu to Los Angeles to testify against a mob boss. The best films in history can create something so profound with the cinematic language that it makes us believe that we are in fact participants in the chaotic events happening on screen. Snakes on a Plane is definitely not one of those films. It is stupid, cheap, and maybe even a bit inspiring.
- DirectorJoel SchumacherStarsJim CarreyVirginia MadsenLogan LermanWalter Sparrow becomes obsessed with a novel that he believes was written about him, as more and more similarities between himself and his literary alter ego seem to arise. The absurd noir script and stylish editing makes watching Ace Ventura Pet Detective run around frantically quite a transcendent experience. Just remember - this was supposed to be Cable Guy 2.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsHarrison FordCate BlanchettShia LaBeoufIndiana Jones becomes entangled in a Soviet plot to uncover the secret behind mysterious artifacts known as the Crystal Skulls.I've never seen this movie, nor will I ever see this movie, but I found the South Park episode about this movie so gosh darn mean that I figured it deserved to be on this list, on reputation alone.
- DirectorSusan MontfordStarsKim BasingerLukas HaasCraig ShefferA woman out late for Christmas Eve shopping is soon terrorized by a small gang of troublemakers, and she must fight for her life.Kim Basinger's second appearance on this list. I don't think this movie is supposed to be a comedy, but the violence is just so barely believable and the pacing is so strange I found myself laughing when I was supposed to be in suspense.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsBrad PittCate BlanchettTilda SwintonTells the story of Benjamin Button, a man who starts aging backwards with consequences.Brad Pitt plays an infant like nobody else, even better than Bruce Willis in Look Who's Talking... it's funny mostly because it is so overdramatic. Why is this movie in the Criterion Collection?
- DirectorMcGStarsChristian BaleSam WorthingtonAnton YelchinIn 2018, a mysterious new weapon in the war against the machines, half-human and half-machine, comes to John Connor on the eve of a resistance attack on Skynet. But whose side is he on, and can he be trusted?I think they hired Christian Bale for like 2 days to shoot this film and then they spliced him in to everyone else's scenes.. It got exponentially better when I started to think of the movie as just an extended intro to a cool video game.
- DirectorKevin MacdonaldStarsChanning TatumJamie BellDonald SutherlandIn Roman-ruled Britain, a young Roman soldier endeavors to honor his father's memory by finding his lost legion's golden emblem.Channing Tatum sounds like he time warped to the battlefield with Bill and Ted and they accidentally left him behind. Making fun of the actors in this is quite enjoyable, especially when ol' Tatum decides to try a British? accent for his last few lines.
- DirectorRoger MichellStarsBill MurrayLaura LinneyOlivia WilliamsThe story of the love affair between FDR and his distant cousin Margaret "Daisy" Suckley, centered around the weekend in 1939 when the King and Queen of the United Kingdom visited upstate New York.Criticizing Bill Murray is a deadly sin...but someone tell me what happened to the Bill Murray of Groundhog Day? Quick Change? Before seeing this dreadful film I had wondered when he would ever make me laugh again..
but here it is - FDR gets some handjobs. - DirectorRichard ShepardStarsJude LawRichard E. GrantDemián BichirAfter spending 12 years in prison for keeping his mouth shut, notorious safe-cracker Dom Hemingway is back on the streets of London looking to collect what he's owed.Gotta hand it to Jude Law to play a totally obnoxious character that found me wishing he was not in fact, the titular character, because you have to spend a lot of time with him in this movie. I think it would be even better if he and that gangster looking primate in the giant poster behind him switched roles.
- DirectorAlexandre AjaStarsDaniel RadcliffeJuno TempleMax MinghellaIn the aftermath of his girlfriend's mysterious death, a young man awakens to find strange horns sprouting from his forehead.Alexander Aja can't seem to top the inventiveness of High Tension, but this film's sprawling absurdities come close. It's funny because of the religious undertones, and because it stars Harry Potter playing a unique role in which ... his forehead causes people to treat him differently..
- DirectorEthan CoenJoel CoenStarsOscar IsaacCarey MulliganJohn GoodmanA week in the life of a young singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961.The only way this movie is watchable is if you tell yourself it's supposed to be funny. Like this is what comedy is on Jupiter. Unfortunately, if you watch the whole thing the joke's on you.
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsRussell CroweJennifer ConnellyAnthony HopkinsNoah is chosen by God to undertake a momentous mission before an apocalyptic flood cleanses the world.Another movie that benefits from a perspective shift - I tell people that Noah was supposed to be a comedic take on the biblical story, a la Bruce Almighty, and it helps. There are a few scenes that could benefit from some Busby Berkeley choreography, but it's a standard post-modern comedy classic as far as I'm concerned. One big animal love boat.
- DirectorJean-Baptiste LéonettiStarsMichael DouglasJeremy IrvineMartin PalmerIn the Mojave Desert, a naked and unarmed hunting guide runs from a wealthy hunter who wants to ensure his silence in the death of an old man.I don't know how I made it through this schlock action film. Parts of it made me think it was going to be redeemed by some weird homoeroticism. This movie actually made me feel embarrassed for the cast and crew, it's really that awkward.
- DirectorAntoine FuquaStarsDenzel WashingtonMarton CsokasChloë Grace MoretzA man who believes he has put his mysterious past behind him cannot stand idly by when he meets a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters.Another Denzel blockbuster. They're making a sequel to this, and I hope it's as funny as the original. Johnny Skourtis steals every scene he's in.
- DirectorJay RoachStarsBryan CranstonDiane LaneHelen MirrenIn 1947, Dalton Trumbo was Hollywood's top screenwriter, until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs.I think the only way to watch this movie is to pretend that Louis C.K. is actually playing himself from the show Louie... somehow he has made a career out of being a terrible, terrible actor. Walter White does a pretty good job though. I wonder if they did more than one take for every shot or if laziness is the industry standard now.
- DirectorYorgos LanthimosStarsColin FarrellRachel WeiszJessica BardenIn a dystopian near future, according to the laws of The City, single people are taken to The Hotel, where they are obliged to find a romantic partner in 45 days or they're transformed into beasts and sent off into The Woods. This movie is so consistently daring, it's hard to categorize - yet even during the darkest moments I was giggling. The severity of the dystopian world makes for some strange, violent gags. Is subtly hilarious an oxymoron? This is maybe the most meanest romantic comedy I've ever seen... or maybe it's supposed to be a thoughtful drama but.. who cares..?
- DirectorDuncan JonesStarsTravis FimmelPaula PattonBen FosterAs an Orc horde invades the planet Azeroth using a magic portal, a few human heroes and dissenting Orcs must attempt to stop the true evil behind this war.Oh wow . . . this is one of the silliest movies ever made. Such heartfelt dramatic action. The half human orc woman has hilarious makeup. Great spectacular action sequences make up for the ridiculousness of the acting and plot, but it's a true comedy nonetheless.
