- DirectorKarim HussainStarsSophie LauzièreAnne-Marie BelleyBrea AsherAn anthology of horror, consisting of four segments all themed around gory subjects.Yes, it has a very visceral exterior. But stylistic devices and artistic choices are well employed, and seeing the making of confirmed my positive impression
- DirectorMurali K. ThalluriStarsTeresa PalmerFrank SweetSam HarrisAt 2:37, someone commits suicide in the school lavatory. The day is told up to that point from the viewpoint of six different students. One of the hardest hitting movies.
The budget/outcome ratio is incredibly high.
Good cinematography and great script, combined with surprisingly good acting make for a great movie.
The choices made create a strong sense of reality, making the story hit all the harder. - DirectorPaul KingStarsEdward HoggSimon FarnabyVerónica EcheguiA young shut-in takes an imaginary road trip inside his apartment, based on mementos and memories of a European trek from years before.Beautiful is the first word that comes to mind. Story telling in this movie is so well done, you can watch it several times and find nothing but confirmation. Shifts away from reality (through different kinds of animation) are used to ease in and out of the memories of an agoraphobe, reliving the story of what made him a shut-in; also signifying a reluctance to relive said story.
Love to detail, a really pleasant tempo and good actors weave a really well done picture. - DirectorJordan MelamedStarsJoseph Gordon-LevittMichael BacallZooey DeschanelAfter attacking another player with a bat during baseball at school, Lyle's sent to the psych ward. He meets other teenagers with problems. Will group therapy help? From my personal experience, I can verify the truth that lies in the contents and atmosphere in this movie. Rather low budget (especially if you take the A-Listers into consideration), this film also has a high input/output ratio. I love "efficient" movies, and this is one of them.
- DirectorGyörgy PálfiStarsCsaba CzeneIstván GyuriczaGina MorenoThree generations of men, including a pervert that constantly seeks for new kinds of satisfaction, an obese speed eater and a passionate embalmer.Bizarre, but artful (IMHO)
- DirectorE. Elias MerhigeStarsBrian SalzbergDonna DempseyStephen Charles BarryPresented in a surreal, gory and entirely visual manner, Begotten tells of the death of religion, the abuse of nature by Man and a nihilistic outlook on what life ultimately is.Rather experimental. One of the only movies I would not watch in one sitting. Stretches where the always grainy stark B/W contrast/chiaroscuro is only accompanied by the sound of a heartbeat and breathing made this very hard to watch. A worthwhile experience though, even if the plot only kinda makes sense when you read the hidden meaning of it.
- DirectorSean EllisStarsSean BiggerstaffEmilia FoxMichelle RyanAfter a painful breakup, Ben develops insomnia. To kill time, he starts working the late night shift at the local supermarket, where his artistic imagination runs wild.Another beautiful picture. I love the atmosphere and the calm tempo, along with the "artist-type", "sensitive-type" protagonist and his love for beauty which I hope many people can relate to.
- DirectorOlivier SmoldersStarsFabrice RodriguezYves-Marina GnahouaPhilippe CorbisierIn a world overtaken by eternal darkness, the buttoned down entomologist abandons his phantoms to embrace the unknown. Oscar is a conservator at the Natural Science Museum, and spends most of his days surrounded by bugs. When Oscar isn't tending to the tiny specimens that line his home and workplace, he can frequently be found reflecting on his childhood traumas in the psychiatrist's office. One day, Oscar returns home from work to find an African woman from the museum lying in his bed. It's like a love-child of David Lynch and David Cronenberg, while they were looking at a naked picture of Franz Kafka. Nuff said.
- DirectorIain SoftleyStarsKevin SpaceyJeff BridgesMary McCormackPROT is a patient at a mental hospital who claims to be from a faraway planet named K-PAX. His psychiatrist tries to help him, only to begin to doubt his own explanations. Some people like it, some don't. Some even hate it.
In my opinion, the latter group of people probably didn't understand the movie.
I think Spacey does a great job, and even though the story is maybe a tad on the "accept it or hate it" side, it's an over all nice ride. - DirectorRian JohnsonStarsJoseph Gordon-LevittLukas HaasEmilie de RavinA teenage loner pushes his way into the underworld of a high school crime ring to investigate the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend.
- DirectorLarry ClarkStarsBrad RenfroNick StahlBijou PhillipsA pack of naïve teenagers conspire to murder a mutual friend, whose aggressive demeanour has proven too much.
- DirectorTarsem SinghStarsJennifer LopezVince VaughnVincent D'OnofrioAn F.B.I. Agent persuades a social worker, who is adept with a new experimental technology, to enter the mind of a comatose serial killer in order to learn where he has hidden his latest kidnap victim.Probably the first movie I remember loving for picture AND sound design.
Hey, I mean, I was about 10 years old at that time.
Tarsem Singh wows us with amazing images that astonish by visuals and content. While the story may possibly seem rather "meh" and the production has its "Hollywood blockbuster-feeling" moments, it is definitely a wild ride worth taking - DirectorTarsem SinghStarsLee PaceCatinca UntaruJustine WaddellIn 1920s Los Angeles, a bedridden patient in a hospital captivates a young girl with a fantastic tale of heroes, myths, and villains on a desert island.Follow-up to The Cell (not connected at all, purely in the sense that this is Tarsem Singh's next visual and aural masterpiece), this beautiful movie is sadly misunderstood by many. Some call the narrative background a "sad excuse for bad story-telling" - but that's exactly what the story is about: Story-telling, and the reasons and influences behind and of a story. There is a good explanation for everything and YES, the story or its interpretation inside the movie is in part crafted by the mind of a nine-year-old. That does not signify a narrative cop-out, it is the first-level motive: A girl listening to, telling, and experiencing a story. If you're not interested in that, watch a different movie. Don't just say it's a bad screenplay.
- DirectorJoseph VilsmaierStarsAndré EisermannDana VávrováBen BeckerIn the beginning of the 19th century, Johannes Elias Alder is born in a small village in the Austrian mountains. While growing up he is considered strange by the other villagers and discovers his love of music, especially rebuilding and playing the organ at the village church. After experiencing an "acoustic wonder", his eye color changes and he can hear even the most subtle sounds. Elias falls in platonic love with Elsbeth, the sister of Peter, a neighbor's son, who has longstanding homosexual feelings towards Elias. After Elsbeth, out of frustration from Elias' not returning her love and instead being obsessed with music, chooses to be impregnated and marries someone else who lose love she had spurned for Elias. The village burns and most villagers, including Elsbeth, evacuate to the closest town. Elias remains behind. A music master with the official task to register all the organs in the country arrives at the burnt village. There he discovers Elias' prodigy and invites him to an organ challenge in the town where the villagers relocated. Elias performs there and amazes the audience which includes Elsbeth. She is unable to meet with Elias before he is rushed to a waiting carriage. She calls to him and he hears her, but it is too late. Elias is taken on a brief tour by his mentors but soon returns to his spiritual site near the burnt village where he takes his own life (with Peter by his side), having decided to not sleep anymore. Elsbeth later returns there, a widow with a young daughter, hoping to find Elias but instead discovers his spiritual site has disappeared.I love the atmosphere here. Eschberg really does feel like the damp, god-forsaken backwoods village it's supposed to be, and the good acting is accompanied by a great OST with a solid structure
- DirectorSion SonoStarsTakahiro NishijimaHikari MitsushimaSakura AndôA bizarre love triangle forms between a young Catholic upskirt photographer, a misandric girl and a manipulative cultist.Yes it runs longer than most movies. And you know what? I was not bored for one minute. Love, life, religion, expectations, personal development and growth and more is all packed into this story and portrayed with a certain classic kind of humor that many Asian movies seem to have.
- DirectorUlrich SeidlStarsEkateryna RakLidiya Oleksandrivna SavkaOksana Ivanivna SklyarenkoA nurse from Ukraine searches for a better life in Central Europe, while an unemployed security guard from Austria heads East for the same reason.Amazingly cold and sober story telling create a positively depressing atmosphere. I love it.
- DirectorLukas MoodyssonStarsThorsten FlinckBjörn AlmrothSanna BrådingIn a decript apartment, a young man watches as his father and a friend shoot an amateur porn film. Issues of morality, reality TV and friendship are explored.Really underrated, IMHO.
Interesting stylistic devices, also cold and depressing.
Definitely feels real, too.
And as a bonus, even the "behind the scenes" / bonus features are done somewhat in-character, as part of the project. - DirectorShane MeadowsStarsPaddy ConsidineGary StretchToby KebbellA disaffected soldier returns to his hometown to get even with the thugs who brutalized his mentally-challenged brother years ago.Powerful story, low budget indie.
Great atmosphere and narrative, paired with great stylistic devices and a GREAT soundtrack, if not original, and a great director plus great actors craft something very powerful - DirectorDavid LynchStarsAnthony HopkinsJohn HurtAnne BancroftA Victorian surgeon rescues a heavily disfigured man who is mistreated while scraping a living as a side-show freak. Behind his monstrous façade, there is revealed a person of kindness, intelligence and sophistication. It's a classic. Well, it's not a "classic" Lynch, but a classic classic.
Really well done, good acting and great sound design and score. - DirectorDavid FincherStarsBrad PittEdward NortonMeat LoafAn insomniac office worker and a devil-may-care soap maker form an underground fight club that evolves into much more.Fight Club.
Need I say more? - DirectorMilos FormanStarsJack NicholsonLouise FletcherMichael BerrymanIn the Fall of 1963, a Korean War veteran and criminal pleads insanity and is admitted to a mental institution, where he rallies up the scared patients against the tyrannical nurse.Another classic
- DirectorJames MangoldStarsWinona RyderAngelina JolieClea DuVallA directionless teenager, Susanna, is rushed to Claymoore, a mental institution, after a supposed suicide attempt. There, she befriends a group of troubled women who deeply influence her life.Another classic...
- DirectorLucía PuenzoStarsInés EfronMariela VitalePep MunnéA desperate love story between two young girls of extremely different social backgrounds who, unable to find a place for their love in the world they live in, are pushed to commit a crime. Finally, something that's probably not a classic on many peoples' radar.
I can't quite put my finger on it, but this movie has a certain kind of beauty to it. Mostly rather calm / low tempo - DirectorAlejandro G. IñárrituStarsEmilio EchevarríaGael García BernalGoya ToledoAn amateur dog fighter, a supermodel, and a derelict assassin, all separately struggling to find love, find their lives transformed by a devastating car wreck in Mexico City.
- DirectorMichel GondryStarsGael García BernalCharlotte GainsbourgMiou-MiouA man entranced by his dreams and imagination is love-struck with a French woman and feels he can show her his world."Strange and beautiful" is thrown around a lot.
When it's about this movie, it fits.
