- DirectorBrenda ChapmanSteve HicknerSimon WellsStarsVal KilmerRalph FiennesMichelle PfeifferEgyptian Prince Moses learns of his identity as a Hebrew and his destiny to become the chosen deliverer of his people. There's a reason this movie sits as one of my favourite animated movies of all time. It is absolutely gorgeous. The music, the visuals, everything is absolutely fantastic. The only minor issue with this movie is their insistence to use CGI models at various points in the movie and it hasn't aged exceptionally well. That being said, it's an incredibly minor issue given the magnificent scope of the rest of it.
- DirectorAndrew AdamsonKelly AsburyConrad VernonStarsMike MyersEddie MurphyCameron DiazShrek and Fiona travel to the Kingdom of Far Far Away, where Fiona's parents are King and Queen, to celebrate their marriage. When they arrive, they find they are not as welcome as they thought they would be.Shrek 2 is everything a sequel to Shrek needed to be and more. It took everything introduced in the first and expanded on it, between the themes to the world. Though Duloc was very much a riff on Disneyworld, Far Far Away is a riff on Hollywood in general, while still seeming subtle enough that it didn't seem forced in most spots. The comedy wasn't always stellar, with there naturally being a focus on gross-out jokes with Shrek, but there were ample line deliveries that got a laugh out of me. Not to mention the "I Need A Hero" climax is the best part of the movie by far. Funny and still genuine feeling, I'm confident that this is by far the best Shrek movie in the franchise.
- DirectorBibo BergeronDon PaulJeffrey KatzenbergStarsKevin KlineKenneth BranaghRosie PerezTwo swindlers get their hands on a map to the fabled city of gold, El Dorado. The Road to El Dorado is yet another gorgeous movie from DreamWorks! I absolutely love all the colours in the movie and the banter between the two leads is what really makes this movie. The plot is a little weak at times but it never loses my attention throughout the whole thing. Fun adventure flicks are my weakness, and this hits the spot perfectly.
- DirectorAndrew AdamsonVicky JensonStarsMike MyersEddie MurphyCameron DiazA mean lord exiles fairytale creatures to the swamp of a grumpy ogre, who must go on a quest and rescue a princess for the lord in order to get his land back.Because I've watched Shrek and a bunch of movies with Shrek's formula plenty of times, I sometimes forget just why the movie took of as successfully as it did. It was a departure from the standard fantasy genre by incorporating modern elements that added to the overall humour of the movie. The message of "don't judge a book by its cover" fits in nicely with the plot and all the modern music fits in nicely with their respective scenes. Overall a very solid movie.
- DirectorPeter LordNick ParkStarsMel GibsonJulia SawalhaPhil DanielsWhen a cockerel apparently flies into a chicken farm, the chickens see him as an opportunity to escape their evil owners.Chicken Run has a whole lot of heart behind it thanks in no small part to the studio's partnership with Aardman. Despite being about prison escaping chickens, it feels very genuine with every character being believable while also being cartoony. I can't say I have an issue with any aspect of this movie, it was just pleasant.
- DirectorSteve BoxNick ParkStarsPeter SallisHelena Bonham CarterRalph FiennesWallace and his loyal dog, Gromit, set out to discover the mystery behind the garden sabotage that plagues their village and threatens the annual giant vegetable growing contest. The best way to describe this movie is harmless fun. This movie isn't trying to be cool or hip like some of Dreamworks' less successful films, it just puts the two titular characters in a fun scenario and watches it play out. The humour ranges from adult winks to more physical stuff for kids without falling in the trap of burps and farts too often. Admittedly I don't think this movie left a massive impression on me but frankly I don't think it needed to. This isn't a masterpiece of art or anything, it was just trying to be an entertaining movie and I think it did that perfectly. Chicken Run had a bit more going for it in regards to heartfelt emotion but I can't say that means this movie is any less fun.
- DirectorKelly AsburyLorna CookStarsMatt DamonJames CromwellDaniel StudiA captured mustang remains determined to return to his herd no matter what.Spirit is a cute movie. The animation is still solid with the background still being super gorgeous, and the soundtrack was nice despite swinging between standard orchestral music and strangely synth-y pop tracks. Plus I commend the movie for minimal dialogue, being able to convey story beats and emotion through visual symbolism and how the horse characters emote is very impressive. What takes away from this is their inclusion of giving the titular Spirit a voice over narration at times to explain some story beats that might be a bit too esoteric for the child audience to pick up on. While the plot worked, I did think it was a bit goofy how the lead antagonist had such a massive desire to tame a single horse. It was explained in the movie and entirely makes sense, but did have me laughing at times. Not to mention knowing the actual history of the western expansion does deflate the victorious ending quite a bit for me.
- DirectorPatrick GilmoreTim JohnsonStarsBrad PittCatherine Zeta-JonesJoseph FiennesThe sailor of legend is framed by the goddess Eris for the theft of the Book of Peace and must travel to her realm at the end of the world to retrieve it and save the life of his childhood friend Prince Proteus.I'm incredibly conflicted about this movie. On the one hand, Sinbad is probably the best looking 2d animated movie Dreamworks has put out with the blending of 2d characters and 3d assets being nearly seamless. Plus the character designs themselves are really fun for the most part. But on the other hand the story feels very rushed with all stakes being completely deflated by Sinbad apparently being just perfect at all things, getting out of danger easily. Even the character arc he goes through feels very insincere. I'm glad I watched this one, but I probably won't be returning to it any time soon.
- DirectorEric DarnellTim JohnsonLawrence GutermanStarsWoody AllenSharon StoneGene HackmanA rather neurotic ant tries to break from his totalitarian society while trying to win the affection of the princess he loves. What a strange, confused movie this is. It doesn't know if it wants to be a goofy, wacky comedy about ants or a serious critique of capitalism. One of the most jarring moments comes early on when it cuts from the strongman-comic relief saying something silly to a post war battlefield with corpses strewn across it. It's comical how much whiplash I got from this movie. Plus the Woody Allen performance made me groan pretty much the entire film. The best thing I can say about this movie is that the backgrounds are real pretty and hold up really well.
- DirectorTim JohnsonKarey KirkpatrickStarsBruce WillisGarry ShandlingSteve CarellA scheming raccoon fools a mismatched family of forest creatures into helping him repay a debt of food, by invading the new suburban sprawl that popped up while they were hibernating...and learns a lesson about family himself.I don't have a lot to say about this movie. To me, it's perfectly plain. The humour suffers in the same way as Madagascar but thankfully isn't to the same degree of painful. The story is fine, the characters are fine. The movie is just...fine.
- DirectorEric DarnellTom McGrathStarsChris RockBen StillerDavid SchwimmerA group of animals who have spent all their life in a New York zoo end up in the jungles of Madagascar, and must adjust to living in the wild. The biggest issue with Madagascar is how it absolutely refuses to move along at anything slower than break-neck for the majority of the movie. Every single joke has the punchline of a character reacting at a lightning pace and generally has the comedic impact of a six year old hopped up on pixie sticks. There are some elements that I think are fun, like the penguins, but it ultimately gets completely washed out by the obnoxiously fast pace. Fine enough for a young audience but there's much, much better out there.
- DirectorBibo BergeronVicky JensonRob LettermanStarsWill SmithRobert De NiroRenée ZellwegerWhen a son of a gangster shark boss is accidentally killed while on the hunt, his would-be prey and his vegetarian brother decide to use the incident to their own advantage.Shark Tale is a good example of trying to recapture lightning in a bottle in all the wrong ways. Shrek had a lot of the same elements Shark Tale did: a star-studded cast, a world filled with pop-culture references, and a soundtrack filled with pop music. Unlike Shrek, however, Shark Tale *only* has those elements and a shoddy, poorly executed plot. The humour entirely falls flat and even wanders in the offensive with some stereotypes. Avoid this movie at all costs.
