- DirectorGeorge StevensStarsAlan LaddJean ArthurVan HeflinA weary gunfighter in 1880s Wyoming begins to envision a quieter life after befriending a homestead family with a young son who idolizes him, but a smoldering range war forces him to act.New Year's Day
I enjoyed the concept of a gun-fighter, who is high-strung and weary, trying to settle down peacefully. I thought the little boy did a good job acting ~ contrary to much of my family. I wanted to see this movie because of George Stevens.
7.5/10 - DirectorJohn HustonStarsHumphrey BogartMary AstorGladys GeorgeSan Francisco private detective Sam Spade takes on a case that involves him with three eccentric criminals, a gorgeous liar and their quest for a priceless statuette, with the stakes rising after his partner is murdered.January 2nd
Great acting, MacGuffin, and directorial debut by John Huston. When the year started I was in the middle of my Humphrey Bogart parade.
9/10 - DirectorTodd PhillipsStarsZach GalifianakisBradley CooperJustin BarthaThree buddies wake up from a bachelor party in Las Vegas, with no memory of the previous night and the bachelor missing. They make their way around the city in order to find their friend before his wedding.January 2nd
Funny; a few jokes miss here or there.
7/10 - DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsLeonardo DiCaprioCate BlanchettKate BeckinsaleA biopic depicting the early years of legendary director and aviator Howard Hughes' career from the late 1920s to the mid 1940s.January 5th
Very interesting to see. In my opinion, Martin Scorsese should have won for Best Director, and Jamie Foxx must have really done an astounding performance to beat Leonardo DiCaprio.
8/10 - DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsLeonardo DiCaprioCameron DiazDaniel Day-LewisIn 1862, Amsterdam Vallon returns to the Five Points area of New York City seeking revenge against Bill the Butcher, his father's killer.January 6th
Long, but good. I was cheering for both Daniel Day-Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio at the end, and the last few seconds were stunning.
7.5/10 - DirectorPaul Thomas AndersonStarsJoaquin PhoenixPhilip Seymour HoffmanAmy AdamsA Naval veteran arrives home from war unsettled and uncertain of his future - until he is tantalized by the Cause and its charismatic leader.January 8th
I movie to make you think. Joaquin Phoenix has some of the best acting of all time in this movie. Because of the acting, The Master is a must-see, even if unconventional movies are not your forte. Though the symbolism and deeper meanings are there, to me it is not gripping and does not capture my attention later.
7/10 - DirectorJohn HustonStarsHumphrey BogartKatharine HepburnRobert MorleyIn WWI East Africa, a gin-swilling Canadian riverboat captain is persuaded by a strait-laced English missionary to undertake a trip up a treacherous river and use his boat to attack a German gunship.January 13th
An enjoyable movie to return to. Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn directed by John Huston is a pairing made in Heaven.
9/10 - DirectorAlfonso CuarónStarsJulianne MooreClive OwenChiwetel EjioforIn 2027, in a chaotic world in which women have somehow become infertile, a former activist agrees to help transport a miraculously pregnant woman to a sanctuary at sea.January 15th
*Spoilers*
Children of Men has some of the most powerful scenes, including, the birth scene and the cease-fire scene. It is kind of disappointing, however, that Michael Caine's character's final words were, "Pull my finger."
7.5/10 - DirectorStephen FrearsStarsHelen MirrenMichael SheenJames CromwellAfter the death of Princess Diana, Queen Elizabeth II struggles with her reaction to a sequence of events nobody could have predicted.January 15th
The Queen was more enjoyable than I forethought. I agree with the Royal Family in this movie; it is tragic that Diana died, but to get angry at the Royal Family is absurd.
8/10 - DirectorGore VerbinskiStarsJohnny DeppGeoffrey RushOrlando BloomBlacksmith Will Turner teams up with eccentric pirate "Captain" Jack Sparrow to save his love, the governor's daughter, from Jack's former pirate allies, who are now undead.January 19th
Astounding score and Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow is always entertaining.
8.5/10 - DirectorGore VerbinskiStarsJohnny DeppOrlando BloomKeira KnightleyJack Sparrow races to recover the heart of Davy Jones to avoid enslaving his soul to Jones' service, as other friends and foes seek the heart for their own agenda as well.January 19th
Besides popular belief, I think that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is the best one. I also believe that the first two Pirates of the Caribbean are the only ones that are good, and should be the only ones one watches. I know about all the cliffhangers, but it's just not worth watching the third one. This movie is funny and entertaining. At one point this was my second favorite movie; it will always be warm in my heart.
9/10 - DirectorJohn FordStarsJohn WayneJeffrey HunterVera MilesAn American Civil War veteran embarks on a years-long journey to rescue his niece from the Comanches after the rest of his brother's family is massacred in a raid on their Texas farm.January 28th
If you enjoy old movies and your family doesn't particularly, don't watch this one with your family. I wanted to see this because of John Ford, but I reflect thinking about Ethan ~ a very compelling character. Unfortunately, my experience was dragged down by the guffawing and ignorance of my family as I watched it. My father later remarked that the sudden change from wanting to kill his niece to saving her made no sense, but that's a major part ~ maybe even the most important part ~ of the movie. Whilst on the search for his niece, he finds something he doesn't know he was searching for ~ his humanity. The complaints that this movie is problematic because the main character is an unapologetic racist is ridiculous, as the point of the movie is that he changes. To me, The Searchers is a movie about finding your humanity.
9/10 - DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsMartin SheenMarlon BrandoRobert DuvallA U.S. Army officer serving in Vietnam is tasked with assassinating a renegade Special Forces Colonel who sees himself as a god.January 29th
No review of mine would really do this movie justice. I watched the extended edition for my third viewing of Apocalypse Now and will watch it going forward. Marlon Brando's acting: I rank the third-best performance of all time. Marlon Brando is known for being a revolutionary actor, for displaying emotion far greater and more convincingly than other actors (among other reasons), but as Kurtz, he shows nothing, emptiness. Francis Ford Coppola told him two things: Read a book, lose some weight. Marlon Brando didn't do either and delivered one of the best performances of all time; I believe his best performance. After this I will watch two other Vietnam war films, each capturing an essence of the war. This captures the horrific attack on the psyche of the war.
9.5/10 - DirectorTerry JonesStarsGraham ChapmanJohn CleeseMichael PalinBorn on the original Christmas in the stable next door to Jesus Christ, Brian of Nazareth spends his life being mistaken for a messiah.January 30th
One of the funniest films ever, Biggus Dickus in particular is, in my opinion, the funniest movie scene ever, in terms of the rolling-on-the-ground-fighting-for-air type of humor. That said, the best scene of the movie is Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, a funny, ironic ~ dare I say beautiful scene. A brilliantly written film.
8.5/10 - DirectorOliver StoneStarsCharlie SheenTom BerengerWillem DafoeChris Taylor, a neophyte recruit in Vietnam, finds himself caught in a battle of wills between two sergeants, one good and the other evil. A shrewd examination of the brutality of war and the duality of man in conflict.January 31st
Platoon is a difficult movie to watch. The village raid is especially graphic and disturbing, and one of the times I've felt the tensest watching a movie. This captures the horrific things done in the war.
7.5/10 - DirectorMichael CurtizStarsHumphrey BogartIngrid BergmanPaul HenreidA cynical expatriate American cafe owner struggles to decide whether or not to help his former lover and her fugitive husband escape the Nazis in French Morocco.February 6th
Just as The Searchers is a film example of finding your humanity, Casablanca is an example of using your humanity.
9/10 - DirectorBruce BeresfordStarsLothaire BluteauAden YoungSandrine HoltIn the 17th century, a Jesuit missionary nicknamed Black Robe by the natives and his small party of companions try reaching the Huron tribe in Canada all while facing mistrust, Iroquois warring parties and harsh winter conditions.February 11th
Visually it is quite nice. I watched it in religion class and it was not a good experience due to constant blabbering by a particular student and my teacher pointing out everything they were doing.
7/10 - DirectorDavid YatesStarsDaniel RadcliffeEmma WatsonRupert GrintAs Harry Potter begins his sixth year at Hogwarts, he discovers an old book marked as "the property of the Half-Blood Prince" and begins to learn more about Lord Voldemort's dark past.February 13th
This movie always seemed like one of the weaker ones to me, but it is still enjoyable. The scene where Dumbledore and Harry are in the cave and the creatures start swarming them used to scare me as a child.
7/10 - DirectorJoel CoenEthan CoenStarsJeff BridgesJohn GoodmanJulianne MooreJeff "The Dude" Lebowski, mistaken for a millionaire of the same name, seeks restitution for his ruined rug and enlists his bowling buddies to help get it.February 13th
I like The Big Lebowski. I always found the character of Walter Sobchak more intriguing and mournful than comedic; and I treated the film itself less comedic than most viewers. Perhaps I have the wrong impression of the movie, but it can hurt the experience sometimes when there's laughing when you're taking it seriously. I'm always in a drowsy state when I watch this movie (which is a total of three times) which means it seems like a dream in my memory.
8/10 - DirectorMichael CiminoStarsRobert De NiroChristopher WalkenJohn CazaleAn in-depth examination of the ways in which the Vietnam War impacts and disrupts the lives of several friends in a small steel mill town in Pennsylvania.Valentine's Day
The Deer Hunter is a vital film to watch when concerning the Vietnam War. In my opinion, there are 3 quintessential films about Vietnam: Apocalypse Now, The Deer Hunter, Platoon. I have now seen all 3 films this year. The Deer Hunter is a three-hour Vietnam war film that has 25 mins of actual Vietnam combat (including the Russian Roulette scene), but the war is as prominent as in films as gruesome as Platoon. The Deer Hunter focuses on the impact of daily life and a human aspect of war greater than most, if not all, films about war. Absolutely fantastic with the greatest scene of acting in any film, the Russian Roulette scene ~ so realistic it will affect you and make you think there is an actual bullet in the chamber. Robert De Niro's role as Michael is, in my opinion, the 6th greatest acting performance of all time.
9/10 - DirectorBenny SafdieJosh SafdieStarsAdam SandlerJulia FoxIdina MenzelWith his debts mounting and angry collectors closing in, a fast-talking New York City jeweler risks everything in hope of staying afloat and alive.Valentine's Day
*Spoilers*
It's great to see Adam Sandler get the respect he deserves. And the ending is shocking and it is intense. But the film lacks other components such as character and dialogue. In the end, it is not my type of movie; I do not prefer films that say, "fuck" every sentence. To me, it seems ridiculous, though I understand that it is more realistic, but it shows a lack of credible dialogue.
6.5/10 - DirectorOrson WellesStarsOrson WellesJoseph CottenDorothy ComingoreFollowing the death of publishing tycoon Charles Foster Kane, reporters scramble to uncover the meaning of his final utterance: 'Rosebud.'February 16th
