So bizarre, with an absolute bop of a rockabilly-soundtrack. The dialogue is quite offbeat: "The snakeskin jacket is a sign of my individuality and belief in personal freedom." (Which is now my favourite Nicolas Cage quote.)

Wonderful music, culturally significant. The set was a little distracting (it alternates between being a film, to a live action, to a musical). - DirectorVictor FlemingKing VidorStarsJudy GarlandFrank MorganRay BolgerYoung Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto are swept away by a tornado from their Kansas farm to the magical Land of Oz and embark on a quest with three new friends to see the Wizard, who can return her to her home and fulfill the others' wishes.9/10

Dark, brooding, every alt girl's fantasy - somewhat reminiscent of The Craft (1996) actually (with elements of fun camp)! - DirectorSteven ShainbergStarsJames SpaderMaggie GyllenhaalJeremy DaviesA young woman, recently released from a mental hospital, gets a job as a secretary to a demanding lawyer, where their employer-employee relationship turns into a sexual, sadomasochistic one.7/10

I love the bizarre colour palette choices, I love the humour and absurdity of it.. and I appreciate the looming gloom of a mental illness.

Both the pictures and the soundtrack are minimalistic yet striking and effective. Probably one of the bleakest motion picture I have ever seen. Takes some patience. - DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsMeryl StreepBruce WillisGoldie HawnWhen a fading actress learns of an immortality treatment, she sees it as a way to outdo her long-time rival.6/10

Bursting with energy from the winds, the rocks, the meadows- the sound design captures the atmosphere wonderfully.
Animation and facial expressions often inconsistent with the dark tones as they seem a little too cartoony at times. I also feel that it would benefit from having the ending cut off short. Felt a little overexplained.
But really, really a fantastic short. - DirectorSeijun SuzukiStarsYoshio HaradaNaoko ÔtaniKisako MakishiA surreal period film following a university professor and his eerie nomad friend as they go through loose romantic triangles and face death in peculiar ways.7/10

I don't know what to think of this one. Ever since I read the synopsis from JFF 2018, I was hooked on the premise. Surrealism, East meets West, sex.. what's not to love? However, the movie I watched was not something I expected (neither in a good, nor bad way).
This really is one of those "every frame a painting" sort of films. You could stop at any point of the movie- and the placement and colours would be at this great asymmetrical harmony. The characters are great representations of the "different Japans" during the Taisho era- one sleek and modern, one wild and primal. It's easy to see how the two men juxtapose each other.
On the other hand, the plot (if you could call it that) is pretty difficult to follow. You would probably appreciate Zigeunerweisen as a true motion picture, rather than a narrative on-screen.
Pretty cool movie, but I will probably give it some time before rewatching. - DirectorDanishka EsterhazyStarsDani KindSteve LundCelina MartinYoung Harley is having a dream birthday; he and his family are going to watch the taping of his favourite show. Extremely personal. With films like this, I realise how important it is to understand the culture behind the script and characters.
Even apart from the fact that this is seemingly a movie made just for me- the blocking is done incredibly cleverly, the lighting and colour palette is full of warmth.. Just a beautiful movie overall.
Edit: So I don't remember when this was lowered to 8, but apparently I made that change. I'll keep it that way because 9's are reserved for VERY good films. And I don't remember super outstanding things about Minari (2021). It was beautiful and warm and vulnerable, but it is a 9..?? Maybe a high 8. It's a very pretty movie, but holy moly it's so long. Okay with the pacing but really, they couldn't edit some scenes out to make it a clean 2-hour feature?
Also the language is a bit of a distraction. Why do they sometimes speak Japanese and sometimes not - and paired with the cheesy performance, it just seems like the accents are exaggerated. - DirectorDarren SteinStarsRose McGowanRebecca GayheartJulie BenzThree of the most popular girls at Reagan High accidentally kill the prom queen with a jawbreaker when a kidnapping goes horribly wrong.4/10
