One of America's most loved actresses was born Doris Mary Kappelhoff on April 3, 1922, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Alma Sophia (Welz), a housewife, and William Joseph Kappelhoff, a music teacher and choir master. Her grandparents were all German immigrants. She had two brothers, Richard, who died before she was born and Paul, a few years older.
Her parents divorced while she was still a child, and she lived with her mother. Like most little girls, Doris liked to dance. At fourteen, she formed a dance act with a boy, Jerry Doherty, and they won $500 in a local talent contest. She and Jerry took a brief trip to Hollywood to test the waters. They felt they could succeed, so she and Jerry returned to Cincinnati with the intention of packing and making a permanent move to Hollywood. Tragically, the night before she was to move to Hollywood, she was injured riding in a car hit by a train, ending the possibility of a dancing career.
It was a terrible setback, but after taking singing lessons she found a new vocation, and at age 17, she began touring with the Les Brown Band. She met trombonist Al Jorden, whom she married in 1941. Jorden was prone to violence and they divorced after two years, not long after the birth of their son Terry. In 1946, Doris married George Weidler, but this union lasted less than a year. Day's agent talked her into taking a screen test at Warner Bros. The executives there liked what they saw and signed her to a contract (her early credits are often confused with those of another actress named Doris Day, who appeared mainly in B westerns in the 1930s and 1940s).
Her first starring movie role was in Romance on the High Seas (1948). The next year, she made two more films, My Dream Is Yours (1949) and It's a Great Feeling (1949). Audiences took to her beauty, terrific singing voice and bubbly personality, and she turned in fine performances in the movies she made (in addition to several hit records). She made three films for Warner Bros. in 1950 and five more in 1951. In that year, she met and married Martin Melcher, who adopted her young son Terry, who later grew up to become Terry Melcher, a successful record producer.
In 1953, Doris starred in Calamity Jane (1953), which was a major hit, and several more followed: Lucky Me (1954), Love Me or Leave Me (1955), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) and what is probably her best-known film, Pillow Talk (1959). She began to slow down her filmmaking pace in the 1960s, even though she started out the decade with a hit, Please Don't Eat the Daisies (1960).
In 1958, her brother Paul died. Around this time, her husband, who had also taken charge of her career, had made deals for her to star in films she didn't really care about, which led to a bout with exhaustion. The 1960s weren't to be a repeat of the previous busy decade. She didn't make as many films as she had in that decade, but the ones she did make were successful: Do Not Disturb (1965), The Glass Bottom Boat (1966), Where Were You When the Lights Went Out? (1968) and With Six You Get Eggroll (1968). Martin Melcher died in 1968, and Doris never made another film, but she had been signed by Melcher to do her own TV series, The Doris Day Show (1968). That show, like her movies, was successful, lasting until 1973. After her series went off the air, she made only occasional TV appearances.
By the time Martin Melcher died, Doris discovered she was millions of dollars in debt. She learned that Melcher had squandered virtually all of her considerable earnings, but she was eventually awarded $22 million by the courts in a case against a man that Melcher had unwisely let invest her money. She married for the fourth time in 1976 and since her divorce in 1980 has devoted her life to animals.
Doris was a passionate animal rights activist. She ran Doris Day Animal League in Carmel, California, which advocates homes and proper care of household pets.

One of the prime Broadway musical stars of the post WWII period, handsome John Raitt was once described by composer Richard Rodgers as "a big, brawny fellow with a magnificent baritone." John would go on to maintain an incredibly resilient career spanning over 60 years, showing remarkable power, range and stamina for a man who defied the odds as he continued concertizing well into his 80s.
He was born John Emmet Raitt in Santa Ana, California on January 29, 1917, the son of Archie John Raitt, founder and director of the North Orange County Young Men's Christian Association. His interest in theatre developed while attending Fullerton Union High School in Fullerton where he appeared in several plays at the local Plummer Auditorium and sang in the chorus of "The Desert Song." Also excelling in football and track, he won the state title in the shot-put in 1935, which, in turn, earned him a track scholarship to USC. A year later, however, he transferred to the University of Redlands and received his degree in physical education.
Having also studied classical voice at the university, he appeared in their productions of "The Bartered Bride" and "Die Fledermaus." With singing winning out over a high school gym teaching career, John intently studied voice under Richard Cummings while performing at rotary clubs and YMCAs. One of his first appearances would be in the chorus of "HMS Pinafore" with the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera Company in 1940. Moving up into prime roles the following year, John the leading roles of played Figaro and Count Almaviva in "The Barber of Seville," Escamillo in "Carmen, as well as leads in "Rose Marie" and "The Merry Widow." After extensive training, John saw himself better suited to musical theatre than opera.
MGM saw promise in John as a leading man, signed him and groomed him in bit roles in both war-era musicals (Little Nellie Kelly (1940) starring Judy Garland and Ship Ahoy (1942) starring Eleanor Powell) and stoic dramas (Flight Command (1940), H.M. Pulham, Esq. (1941)). Discouraged at his complete lack of acceleration, John continued performing musical stage leads and earned his huge career break when he won the role of Curly in the Chicago production of the new big hit musical "Oklahoma!" in 1944. As such, he abandoned Hollywood and moved to New York.
Critics took notice of the man's robust presence, sturdy pipes and unfailing confidence. The virile man with the sly flash in his eye then made his Broadway debut originating the role of the tormented carnival barker Billy Bigelow in the now-classic 1945 musical "Carousel." He never had to look back. John's powerful rendition of the "Soliloquy" number helped him to clinch the prestigious New York Drama Critics and Donaldson Awards as well as being one of the first recipients of the Theatre World Award for "Promising Personalities." Surprisingly, he was not nominated for a Tony Award for this or any other performance. Nevertheless, John continued to impress on Broadway despite the short runs of "Magadalena" (1948), "Three Wishes for Jamie" (1952) and "Carnival in Flanders" (1953).
TV took notice and John showcased on many of the popular musical variety shows of the day, making his debut on "The Ed Wynn Show" in 1949. Others programs would include "The Buick Circus Show," "The Jane Froman Show," "The Milton Berle Show," "The Colgate Comedy Hour," The Ed Sullivan Show," "The Dinah Shore Chevy Show," "The Steve Allen Playhouse," Shirley Temple's Storybook Theatre" and "The Bell Telephone Hour," among others. In 1957 he played Frank Butler opposite Mary Martin's Annie Oakley in an NBC-TV production of Annie Get Your Gun (1957) and was given straight acting roles in such dramatic fare as "General Electric Theater" and "Death Valley Days."
In 1954, John originated his second signature role as foreman Sid Sorokin in "The Pajama Game" opposite Janis Paige. Here, he introduced the classic ballad "Hey There" for which he is arguably best known. So ideally suited was he in this role that John was asked to transfer Sid to film, this time co-starring with Doris Day. Although the movie was an unqualified success, musical films were on their way out and he did not find any more work in the area of cinema.
For the next few decades, John would dedicate himself with tours of the roles audiences had grown to love (Curly, Billy, Sid). Raitt's two other Broadway ventures, the musical A Joyful Noise (1966) and the revue A Musical Jubilee (1975), closed early. Additional vehicles that suited him on the road included "Camelot," "Shenandoah," "1776," "South Pacific," "Man of La Mancha," "Kismet, "New Moon," Zorba" and "Fiddler on the Roof." Out of nowhere, John played a singing trucker in a 1986 TV episode of "Third Rock from the Sun."
The elderly Raitt continued performing strongly into his eighties, touring in his one-man show "An Evening with John Raitt" in which he sang 23 songs from 16 Broadway musicals. He was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame in 2001. He recorded 14 albums in all, including John Raitt: The Broadway Legend (1995). The live musical and concert stages would be John's invaluable legacy to the music world -- there he was always "First Raitt!"
In 1942, John married pianist Marjorie Haydock. One of their three children grew up to become renowned blues/rock singer, songwriter and guitarist Bonnie Raitt, who obviously inherited her father's musical talent. They often performed in concert together in later years. Son David Raitt became a graphic and title designer. Living in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles, the veteran singer died at 88 on February 20, 2005, of complications from pneumonia. She was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts and went to New Bedford High School. Even before graduating in 1942, she had opened a dance studio where she taught dancing. Dancing was in her blood from an early age, and she performed often at high school festivities, the Mexican Hat Dance being one of her favorites. During the WWII years, she came to Hollywood and became the protégé of Gene Kelly, whom she admired a great deal. She had fine timing and was indefatigable. Unfortunately, she was a diabetic, and this may have been the cause of her demise. She married Larry Blyden in Hollywood (purportedly on the stage of a theatre), and had two children. After her death, her husband took the children to Texas, where they had relatives, and was soon, thereafter, killed in an auto accident.- Actor

With the passing of Irving Foy in 2003, another era in American show business comes to a close. Eddie Foy & the Seven Little Foys appeared on screen together only once, in 1915 in A Favorite Fool (1915), while Eddie Sr., without his progeny, appeared on screen in Actors' Fund Field Day (1910) and Yankee Doodle in Berlin (1919).
In the screen biography The Seven Little Foys (1955), Eddie Foy was portrayed by Bob Hope, while Billy Gray (of Father Knows Best (1954) fame) portrayed Bryan Foy (1896-1977), Lee Erickson portrayed Charley Foy (1898-1984), Paul De Rolf portrayed Richard Foy (1905-1947), Lydia Reed portrayed Mary Foy (1901-1987), Linda Bennett portrayed Madeline Foy (1903-1988), Jimmy Baird portrayed Eddie Foy Jr., (1905-1983) & Tommy Duran portrayed Irving Foy (1908-2003).
Bryan became a successful producer at Warner Brothers, the same studio that employed Charley (who narrated The Seven Little Foys (1955) ). as an actor. Mary also appeared in a number of films during the 20s and 30s but it is Eddie Jr. who is best remembered for his screen appearances. But now, the Seven Little Foys only live on in memories.

She was the archetypal brassy, bosomy, Brooklynesque blonde with a highly distinctive scratchy voice. Barbara Nichols started life as Barbara Marie Nickerauer in Queens, New York on December 10, 1928, and grew up on Long Island. Graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School, she changed her reddish-brown hair to platinum blonde and worked as a post-war model and burlesque dancer. As a beauty contestant, she won the "Miss Long Island" title as well as the dubious crowns of "Miss Dill Pickle", "Miss Mink of 1953" and "Miss Welder of 1953", and also became a GI pin-up favorite. She began to draw early attention on stage (particularly in the musical "Pal Joey") and in television drama.
Barbara found herself stealing focus in small, wisecracking roles, managing at times to draw both humor and pathos out of her characters -- sometimes simultaneously. She seemed consigned to play strippers, gold-diggers, barflies, gun molls and other floozy types, but Barbara made the best of her stereotype, taking full advantage of the not-so-bad films that came her way. While most of them, of course, emphasized her physical endowments, she could also be very, very funny when given a decent script. By far the best of her work came out in one year: Pal Joey (1957), Sweet Smell of Success (1957) and The Pajama Game (1957). By the decade's end, though, her film career had allowed down, and she turned more and more to television, appearing on The Beverly Hillbillies (1962), Adam-12 (1968), The Twilight Zone (1959) (the classic "Twenty-Two" episode), The Untouchables (1959) and Batman (1966), to name a few.
Barbara landed only one regular series role in her career, the very short-lived situation comedy Love That Jill (1958) starring husband-and-wife team Anne Jeffreys and Robert Sterling. Barbara played a model named "Ginger". She also co-starred on Broadway with George Gobel and Sam Levene in the musical "Let It Ride" in 1961 and played roles in a few low-budget movies from time to time, including the campy prison drama House of Women (1962) and the science fiction film The Human Duplicators (1965) starring George Nader and Richard Kiel, who played "Jaws" in the James Bond film series.
A serious Long Island car accident in July 1957 led to the loss of her spleen, and another serious car accident in Southern California in the 1960s led to a torn liver. Complications would set in over a decade later and she was forced to slow down her career. Barbara eventually developed a life-threatening liver disease and her health deteriorated. In summer 1976, she was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, where she went into a coma. She awoke for a few days just before Labor Day, but sank back shortly after. She died at age 47 of liver failure on October 5 and was survived by her parents, George and Julia Nickerauer. She was interred at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Farmingdale, New York.- Actor

Prolific character actor Ralph Dunn was born in Titusville, PA, in 1902. He attended college for a while, but dropped out to join a traveling vaudeville troupe, and performed in minstrel shows and melodramas until 1935, when he headed to Hollywood, but not for the usual reasons vaudevillians made that trip--his parents lived there and his father was in poor health, so he went to help his mother take care of him. In order to make some money he signed up with Central Casting, where his stocky tough-guy look secured him a succession of jobs as cops, thugs, bouncers, bartenders, fight managers, and the like.
His Hollywood career lasted more than 30 years, during which time he kept his hand in stage work. He appeared in the 1951 Broadway production of "The Moon Is Blue" and played the pajama factory owner in the Broadway classic "The Pajama Game", a role he repeated when it was made into a film in 1957. He had more than 300 credits to his name, including television work. His last film role was as a priest in Black Like Me (1964), and his final appearance was in an episode of the series N.Y.P.D. (1967).

Legendary Broadway writer/producer/director George Abbott was born in 1887 in Forestville, New York. His father was mayor of Salamanca, New York, for two terms. In 1898 his family moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Abbott attended Kearney Military Academy. The family returned to New York, where Abbott attended Hamburg High School, graduating in 1907, and the University of Rochester (BA degree in 1911). He wrote the play "Perfectly Harmless" for University Dramatic Club. He attended Harvard University from 1911-1912, studying play writing under George Pierce Baker, and wrote "The Head of the Family" for Harvard Dramatic Club. In 1912 he won $100 in a play contest sponsored by the Bijou Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts, for "The Man in the Manhole", and worked at the Bijou for a year as assistant stage manager. He made his Broadway debut as an actor in 1913 in "The Misleading Lady" (as Babe Merrill, a drunken student), followed by "The Yeoman of the Guard" (1915), "The Queen's Enemies" (1916), "Daddies" (1918), "The Broken Wing" (1920), "Dulcy" (on tour) (1921), "Zander the Great" (1923), "White Desert" (1923), "Hell-Bent for Heaven" (1924), "Lazybones" (1924), "Processional" (1925) and "Cowboy Crazy" (1926). From that point he concentrated on writing and directing, with "The Fall Guy" (his Broadway's debut, 1925), "Three Men on a Horse" (1935), "Jumbo" (1935), "On Your Toes" (1936), "The Boys from Syracuse" (1938), "Too Many Girls" (1939), "Pal Joey" (1940), "Best Foot Forward" (1941), "On the Town" (1944), "High Buttom Shoes" (1947), "Where's Charley?" Inspired by Fred Astaire's dancing in Flying Down to Rio (1933), Stanley Donen (pronounced 'Dawn-en') attended dance classes from the age of ten. He later recalled that the only thing he wanted to be was a tap dancer.
He was born in Columbia, South Carolina, to Helen Pauline (Cohen) and Mordecai Moses Donen, a dress-shop manager, of Russian-Jewish and German-Jewish descent. Donen debuted on Broadway at seventeen. While working as an assistant choreographer in 1941, he met and befriended the actor Gene Kelly, Kelly being the brash, extrovert and energetic side of the burgeoning partnership, Donen the more refined and relaxed. Three years later, the two men renewed their collaboration in Hollywood and did much to reinvigorate the musical genre. For the next decade, they worked side-by-side as choreographers and co-directors (a relationship Donen described as 'wonderful' but 'also trying at times'), linked to MGM's Arthur Freed unit. Between them, they directed classic musicals like On the Town (1949) and Singin' in the Rain (1952) and co-wrote the original story for Take Me Out to the Ball Game (1949). Freed, by the way, was the producer almost single-handedly responsible for the high standard of MGM's A-grade musicals in the 40s and 50s. A former vaudevillian and song-plugger, Freed was an astute judge of talent and encouraged gifted individuals from other media (like radio or theatre) to become involved with pictures. Moreover, he gave artists like Kelly and Donen free rein to express their creative flair.
In 1949, MGM signed Donen to a seven-year contract as director in his own right. From then on, he and Kelly went their separate ways. After directing Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954), Donen moved on to Paramount for Funny Face (1957), then to Warner Brothers for The Pajama Game (1957) and Damn Yankees (1958). As musicals waned in popularity, Donen branched out into other genres. He began to direct and produce elegant, lavish romantic dramas like the delightful Indiscreet (1958), sophisticated comedies like The Grass Is Greener (1960) and Two for the Road (1967) (which starred Donen's favorite actress, Audrey Hepburn), as well as the top-shelf thrillers Charade (1963) (the best film Alfred Hitchcock never directed, again with Hepburn) and Arabesque (1966). Arguably, his most out-of-character film from this period was the esoteric mephistophelean (and very British) farce Bedazzled (1967), featuring the irrepressible comic talents of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore.
The 1970s heralded a steady decline in the quality of Donen's output. None of his later efforts seemed to have the panache of his earlier work: not the tepid adventure-comedy Lucky Lady (1975) (despite a good cast and sumptuous production look) nor the nostalgic musical fantasy The Little Prince (1974), based on the book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. A failure at the box office, the latter also marked the end of the Frederick Loewe-Alan Jay Lerner musical partnership. Donen's career may have finished on a low with a weak sojourn into science fiction that was Saturn 3 (1980) and the quirky comedy Blame It on Rio (1984), but his reputation as one of the giants of the classic Hollywood musical is assured. Donen received an Honorary Oscar in 1998 ""for a body of work marked by grace, elegance, wit, and visual innovation.''- Richard Bissell was born on 27 June 1913 in Dubuque, Iowa, USA. Multi-Academy Award-nominated cinematographer (13 in all), Harry Stradling was unique in that he established his reputation both in America and in Europe. He was the nephew of Mary Pickford's cameraman Walter Stradling, who provided the connections for his first job in Hollywood. Walter died in 1918 and Harry went on to serve his apprenticeship, working on B-movies and short subjects for lesser companies, like Pathe and Arrow. In 1930, he journeyed to France where he established a fruitful collaboration with the director Jacques Feyder, working on films which have become classics of French cinema: Le grand jeu (1934), La dame aux camélias (1934) and, his first noteworthy success, bringing to life the Flemish paintings of Carnival in Flanders (1935).
The visual quality of this film so impressed producer Alexander Korda, that he hired both Feyder and Stradling for his London Films production, Knight Without Armor (1937), starring Marlene Dietrich - hired by Korda for the then princely sum of $350,000. Despite budgetary constraints, which meant that many sets had be improvised and stylised, Stradling's low key lighting gave the film an impressionistic feel and made it look more 'expensive' than it was. It ended up furthering Dietrich's career and led to other prestige assignments in England, including South Riding (1938), The Citadel (1938) and Alfred Hitchcock's Jamaica Inn (1939). With an impressive portfolio thus in hand, Stradling returned to Hollywood and soon worked with 'Hitch' again on Mr. & Mrs. Smith (1941) and Suspicion (1941). Who can forget that indelible scene of Cary Grant ascending a staircase with that suspicious glass of warmed milk for poor Joan Fontaine (the contents of the glass rendered even more dubious by being lit from the inside with a light bulb)? The ever- innovative Stradling also impressed critics and audiences alike with his application of double exposure, creating realistic-looking twins of Douglas Fairbanks Jr. for The Corsican Brothers (1941).
Between 1942 and 1949, Harry worked at MGM, where his close-ups of the changing face of Hurd Hatfield, in The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), further established him as one of the most versatile cinematographers in the business. For Republic, he imbued Nicholas Ray's off-beat Trucolor western Johnny Guitar (1954) with an immense visual style which adds to the almost lyrical quality of the picture. Glamour and technicolour were also key ingredients in Stradling's musicals for MGM, foremost among them The Barkleys of Broadway (1949) and Guys and Dolls (1955). In 1955, Harry went across to Warner Brothers . During his nine year-long tenure there, he earned four Academy Award nominations, culminating in a second Oscar for his much lauded 70 mm filming of My Fair Lady (1964). Towards the end of his career, he contributed to boosting Barbra Streisand's, particularly through his meticulous soft-focus photography of Hello, Dolly! (1969) and Funny Girl (1968).
