- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsDaniel CraigChris EvansAna de ArmasA detective investigates the death of the patriarch of an eccentric, combative family. The movie turned out very different from what I expected, but it was still very enjoyable. Interesting take on a very traditional murder mystery.
- DirectorTaika WaititiStarsRoman Griffin DavisThomasin McKenzieScarlett JohanssonA young German boy in the Hitler Youth whose hero and imaginary friend is the country's dictator is shocked to discover that his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home. So, so, so good! I just want to watch everything that Taika Waititi was ever involved in, but there is not much more left.
- DirectorMichael EnglerStarsStephen Campbell MooreMichael FoxLesley Nicol1927. The Crawleys prepare to host King George V and Queen Mary at Downton Abbey.Very faithful to the original series. Felt like a larger scale episode and not a movie. More of the characteristic drama and intrigue that resolves in a sweet, feel-good ending.
- DirectorRob ReinerStarsWil WheatonRiver PhoenixCorey FeldmanA writer recounts a childhood journey with his friends to find the body of a missing boy.Blue Curve TV. River Phoenix's acting skill is just beyond his age. There is so much maturity in his presence compared to the other boys. He was definitely a very talented kid.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsCate BlanchettBilly CrudupEmma NelsonA loving mom becomes compelled to reconnect with her creative passions after years of sacrificing herself for her family. Her leap of faith takes her on an epic adventure that jump-starts her life and leads to her triumphant rediscovery.I'm surprised this movie doesn't have a higher rating. I really enjoyed it and related to Bernadette a lot. Rather inspiring really.
- DirectorRob ReinerStarsJames CaanKathy BatesRichard FarnsworthAfter a famous author is rescued from a car crash by a fan of his novels, he comes to realize that the care he is receiving is only the beginning of a nightmare of captivity and abuse.Kathy Bates is killing this one! Har har!
- DirectorLuc BessonStarsBruce WillisMilla JovovichGary OldmanIn the colorful future, a cab driver unwittingly becomes the central figure in the search for a legendary cosmic weapon to keep Evil and Mr. Zorg at bay.Netflix. Even after a 100th time, it's still a great sci-fi for when there is nothing else to watch.
- DirectorPaul VerhoevenStarsMichael DouglasSharon StoneGeorge DzundzaA violent police detective investigates a brutal murder that might involve a manipulative and seductive novelist.Okay, this was a great thriller and sexy to boot! Yeah Michael Douglas is kind of old for this role, but my god, Sharon! She was always and still is the most beautiful woman in my eyes.
- CreatorMark GatissSteven MoffatStarsClaes BangDolly WellsMorfydd ClarkIn 1897 Transylvania, the blood-drinking Count draws his plans against Victorian London.Season 1. Loved the first two episodes so much, but was unfortunately underwhelmed by the final third one, as it took a sharp dive into bizarre. Fortunately, it's only a mini-series. The actors who play Dracula and Sister Agatha are fantastic.
- DirectorHarold BeckerStarsBruce WillisMiko HughesAlec BaldwinShadowy elements in the NSA target a nine-year old autistic savant for death when he is able to decipher a top secret code.Netflix. Just meh and nothing special. Quite dated and exaggerated.
- CreatorLauren Schmidt HissrichStarsFreya AllanHenry CavillAnya ChalotraGeralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts.Netflix Season 1. Not sure how I feel about Yennefer. She put all of her worth into being beautiful, went to great lengths to get what she wanted, then grew bored with it. On top of that she had to have the cake AND eat it too with the whole baby drama. In the finale, she didn't even fight with other mages until it was too late, instead choosing to telepathically direct the action. What gives? Loved Gerald and Jaskier, and the fact that a lot of women were involved in the production. Looking forward to watching season 2, reading the original books, and playing The Wild Hunt.
- DirectorTim MillerStarsLinda HamiltonArnold SchwarzeneggerMackenzie DavisAn augmented human and Sarah Connor must stop an advanced liquid Terminator from hunting down a young girl, whose fate is critical to the human race.So blah, it's not even worth mentioning in the same sentence as Terminator or T2: Judgement Day. The biggest offense for me was the blatant overuse of CGI. When REV-9 leaped across the room, he looked like a rubbery mess, not a real solid object (nevermind human-like object). The fight between him and Grace did not have the same tangibility as the one between the two Terminators in the second movie. When are they going to learn that practical effects need to take center stage, while CGI should only be used as an aid? The writing was also very clunky. There were long, boring stretches of pure exposition that could have been handled better. Do we really need characters sitting down every twenty minutes to have some cliched dialog about fate or some backstory? And it's pretty sad that the connection between a machine and John Connor in T2 has more gut-wrenching punch than the relationship between any human characters in this film.
- CreatorJon FavreauStarsPedro PascalChris BartlettKatee SackhoffThe travels of a lone bounty hunter in the outer reaches of the galaxy, far from the authority of the New Republic.Disney+ Season 1. Not too much substance in the plot department (besides the awesome last two episodes), but there is something so great about this series. I loved it. And going back to my critique of Terminator: Dark Fate that I just watched, The Mandalorian goes back to the roots and uses practical effects on almost everything, and it is glorious! I want to rewatch the show right away.
- CreatorTony BasgallopStarsLauren AmbroseToby KebbellNell Tiger FreeA Philadelphia couple are in mourning after an unspeakable tragedy creates a rift in their marriage and opens a door for a mysterious force to enter their home.Season 1. Disappointingly pointless finale. We still don't know anything and it's frustrating! The show that started so well and so creepy, just doesn't have much payoff in the end. Should have been a limited series. It's already stretching itself thin.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBruce CampbellSarah BerryDan HicksAsh Williams, the lone survivor of an earlier onslaught of flesh-possessing spirits, holes up in a cabin with a group of strangers while the demons continue their attack. My first impression was not good: the movie did not waste even five minutes to jump right into it, a few scenes looked like they were filmed with a potato (I watched the extended cut), and the amount of bizarre was just bordering on insane. Why is this movie rated so high? But then I got into it and just couldn't look away. Bruce Campbell is fantastic in his loony scenes, the camera work is inventive and fresh, and the creature design/make-up are outstanding. For a low-budget comedy-horror, this is truly a gem.
And speaking of the potato camera scenes, they give me serious creep factor, as my mind flashed back to The Ring and I was getting prepared for zombified Bruce to start crawling out of my screen. - CreatorJames L. BrooksMatt GroeningSam SimonStarsDan CastellanetaNancy CartwrightHarry ShearerThe satiric half-hour adventures of a working-class family in the misfit city of Springfield.Disney+ Season 3. Continuing on with my journey to rewatch all of The Simpsons.
- DirectorRupert GooldStarsRenée ZellwegerJessie BuckleyFinn WittrockLegendary performer Judy Garland arrives in London in the winter of 1968 to perform a series of sold-out concerts.Everyone praises Renee for her performance in Judy, but while I agree that her acting was emotional and finely crafted, I could not forget for a second that I was watching Renee, and not Judy Garland. She has such a distinctive face with her signature squint and lip pucker, that it constantly takes you out of the illusion. The plot was also pretty pedestrian and void of any hope. I loved the sets though.
- DirectorLulu WangStarsShuzhen ZhaoAwkwafinaX MayoA Chinese family discovers their grandmother has only a short while left to live and decide to keep her in the dark, scheduling a wedding to gather before she dies.Very touching drama. I love Awkwafina as a comedic actress, but here she proves she has the chops to squeeze a tear out of you as well. A story that has never been told before in Hollywood, and I am always on the hunt to find a fresh premise.
- DirectorJoachim RønningStarsAngelina JolieElle FanningHarris DickinsonMaleficent and her goddaughter Aurora begin to question the complex family ties that bind them as they are pulled in different directions by impending nuptials, unexpected allies, and dark new forces at play.I think I liked this one better than the first? A least that's what my ratings indicate. While still annoying, Elle Fanning isn't as dumb as in the original film. Michelle Pfeiffer is a great villainess, and her wardrobe is gorgeous! Angelina is breathtaking. Yeah, the plot is kind of weak, but it's entertaining enough. Mothers-in-law, am I right?
- DirectorAnthony MarasStarsDev PatelArmie HammerNazanin BoniadiThe true story of the Taj Hotel terrorist attack in Mumbai. Hotel staff risk their lives to keep everyone safe as people make unthinkable sacrifices to protect themselves and their families.Amazon Prime. I cried, man, I cried. That was so hard to watch, especially knowing that it's based on true events.
- DirectorBrad FurmanStarsMatthew McConaugheyMarisa TomeiRyan PhillippeA lawyer defending a wealthy man begins to believe his client is guilty of more than just one crime.Netflix. Good mystery and a bit of a revenge.
- StarsRuPaulMichelle VisageAlan CarrUK version of RuPaul's hit reality competition show where RuPaul searches for the country's next drag superstar.Season 1. British drag queens are so much fun: the style, the slang, the accents, the attitude. I'd say a very successful export.
- DirectorJustin DecStarsElizabeth LailJordan CallowayTalitha Eliana BatemanWhen a nurse downloads an app that claims to predict the moment a person will die, it tells her she only has three days to live. With the clock ticking and a figure haunting her, she must find a way to save her life before time runs out.The premise is kind of stupid - I feel like it's been done before, - plus I just can't stand the actress in the lead role. She was terrible in You, and she is not that great here. But for some odd reason the movie itself is rather fun to watch. Relatively creepy and fast-paced.
- DirectorGuy RitchieStarsMatthew McConaugheyCharlie HunnamMichelle DockeryAn American expat tries to sell off his highly profitable marijuana empire in London, triggering plots, schemes, bribery and blackmail in an attempt to steal his domain out from under him.Seen in theatres. For the first hour I had no idea what was happening, but then it just clicks. Creatively refreshing film and satisfying in the end.
- StarsRichard ArmitageHannah John-KamenSiobhan FinneranThe secrets and lies of suburban families are made public by the appearance of a stranger.Netflix. It's not overly smart or well-acted, but the mystery is so tightly twisted that it's impossible not to want to watch more.
