- DirectorNicolas PesceStarsTara WestwoodJunko BaileyDavid Lawrence BrownA house is cursed by a vengeful ghost that dooms those who enter it with a violent death. The latest Grudge film is not a horrible film, but it also isn't much of a horror film. The scares are non-existent save for a few jump-scares. The main "lead" is blandly written and executed. The story bounces between 3 timelines that ultimately lends to the lack of scares as it tries to tie everything together.
- DirectorMiguel ArtetaStarsTiffany HaddishRose ByrneSalma HayekTwo friends with very different ideals start a beauty company together. One is more practical while the other wants to earn her fortune and live a lavish lifestyle.A fast paced film that resolves drama very quickly while also playing fast with the laughs. While that could be an issue, our leads here are absolutely a joy to watch. It is a perfect movie for a "night out" with friends to just sit back and have a good laugh.
- DirectorSam MendesStarsDean-Charles ChapmanGeorge MacKayDaniel MaysApril 6th, 1917. As an infantry battalion assembles to wage war deep in enemy territory, two soldiers are assigned to race against time and deliver a message that will stop 1,600 men from walking straight into a deadly trap. With the lack of a cutaway and sticking to one continuous shot, 1917 gives you not only a technical reason to stay interested, but story wise, a vested interest not to look away. Wonderful performances, settings and story, a must see in the theater.
- DirectorDestin Daniel CrettonStarsMichael B. JordanJamie FoxxBrie LarsonWorld-renowned civil rights defense attorney Bryan Stevenson works to free a wrongly condemned death row prisoner.Wonderful performances across the board and a story that takes you through all of the spectrum of emotions. If you are not familiar with the true story this movie is based on, don't spoil the movie by looking it up, go into this without any knowledge of the events.
- DirectorWilliam EubankStarsKristen StewartVincent CasselMamoudou AthieA crew of oceanic researchers working for a deep sea drilling company try to get to safety after a mysterious earthquake devastates their deepwater research and drilling facility located at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. The movie delivers the expected Alien/Meg references while also proving to be a nice tightly delivered little thriller. Stewart is very believable and anchors the film. Definitely worth an afternoon matinee visit.
- DirectorAdil El ArbiBilall FallahStarsWill SmithMartin LawrenceVanessa HudgensMiami detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett must face off against a mother-and-son pair of drug lords who wreak vengeful havoc on their city. There is an element of "Bayhem" missing from the action and tone, however Smith and Lawrence bring back their trademark swagger and confrontational camaraderie which ultimately is the main draw. Mix in some new characters that blend well with Smith and Lawrence, no doubt about it, the "Bad Boys" are back better than ever.
- DirectorStephen GaghanStarsRobert Downey Jr.Antonio BanderasMichael SheenA physician who can talk to animals embarks on an adventure to find a legendary island with a young apprentice and a crew of strange pets. The film is an overall fun adventure, though very disjointed where the tone is all over the place giving you the impression much tinkering was done with it. I would recommend the best age for enjoyment is 8 to 12 year old, any younger or older and they will be bored.
- DirectorGuy RitchieStarsMatthew McConaugheyCharlie HunnamMichelle DockeryAn American expat tries to sell off his highly profitable marijuana empire in London, triggering plots, schemes, bribery and blackmail in an attempt to steal his domain out from under him.If youre a Guy Richie fan, this film will hit you right in the middle of the sweet spot. Lots of guns, crass conversation and gangster hi-jinks with actors that are loving every minute of it.
- DirectorFloria SigismondiStarsMackenzie DavisFinn WolfhardBrooklynn PrinceA young governess is hired to look after an orphaned girl, but the return of the girl's problematic brother uncovers secrets from their past. A modern take on Henry James' novella "The Turn of the Screw."The film as a whole is a spooky, compelling tale that is well-acted, but is totally undone by multiple ambiguous endings that offer no kind of closure . The story this film is based on has a very ambiguous end, the filmmakers needed to have stuck with one ending, as their decision (or non-decision) taints the enjoyment of the film.
- DirectorReed MoranoStarsBlake LivelyRichard BrakeElly CurtisA woman seeks revenge against those who orchestrated a plane crash that killed her family.
- DirectorTodd RobinsonStarsSebastian StanAlison SudolAsher Miles FallicaThirty-four years after his death, Airman William H. "Pits" Pitsenbarger is awarded the nation's highest military honor for his actions on the battlefield.
- DirectorRichard StanleyStarsNicolas CageJoely RichardsonMadeleine ArthurA secluded farm is struck by a strange meteorite which has apocalyptic consequences for the family living there and possibly the world.
- DirectorOz PerkinsStarsSophia LillisSamuel LeakeyAlice KrigeA long time ago in a distant fairy tale countryside, a young girl leads her little brother into a dark wood in desperate search of food and work, only to stumble upon a nexus of terrifying evil.Lots of atmosphere and off-kilter line delivery make this a fun, creepy fairy tale experience. A lot more psychological than it is scary.
- DirectorCathy YanStarsMargot RobbieRosie PerezMary Elizabeth WinsteadAfter splitting with the Joker, Harley Quinn joins superheroines Black Canary, Huntress, and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from an evil crime lord.If you are a fan of Suicide Squad, I say give this a look. If that movie frustrated you, this one has a lot of the same structure issues but with more action. For me, I overall enjoyed it, but have to say, Suicide Squad edges it out.
- DirectorSeverin FialaVeronika FranzStarsRiley KeoughJaeden MartellLia McHughA soon-to-be stepmom is snowed in with her fiancé's two children at a remote holiday village. Just as relations begin to thaw between the trio, some strange and frightening events take place.
- DirectorJeff FowlerStarsBen SchwartzJames MarsdenJim CarreyAfter discovering a small, blue, fast hedgehog, a small-town police officer must help him defeat an evil genius who wants to do experiments on him.Sonic is not going to win any major awards, but is an absolutely fun little romp that showcases Jim Carrey at what he does best. Bring on the sequel.
- DirectorJeff WadlowStarsMichael PeñaMaggie QLucy HaleWhen the owner and operator of a luxurious island invites a collection of guests to live out their most elaborate fantasies in relative seclusion, chaos quickly descends. The movie is a decent thriller, though nothing along the lines of the horror films Blumhouse is known for. I love Michael Pena, but he is totally miscast here as Mr. Rourke. The film is a decent theatrical version of the show until it tries to become a slasher film at the end.
- DirectorStella MeghieStarsIssa RaeLaKeith StanfieldChanté AdamsA series of intertwining love stories set in the past and in the present.
- DirectorNat FaxonJim RashStarsJulia Louis-DreyfusWill FerrellZach WoodsBarely escaping an avalanche during a family ski vacation in the Alps, a married couple is thrown into disarray as they are forced to reevaluate their lives and how they feel about each other.
- DirectorChris SandersStarsHarrison FordOmar SyCara GeeA sled dog struggles for survival in the wilds of the Yukon. While the fact all animals in the picture and most settings are CGI, it doesn't get in the way of a wonderful adaptation of a classic book. Performances are the draw here.
- DirectorJason HowdenStarsDaniel RadcliffeSamara WeavingNed DennehyA guy relies on his newly-acquired gladiator skills to save his ex-girlfriend from kidnappers.
- DirectorWilliam Brent BellStarsKatie HolmesChristopher ConveryOwain YeomanAfter a family moves into the Heelshire Mansion, their young son soon makes friends with a life-like doll called Brahms. The film is a serviceable little thriller for most of the film, then the end comes and totally wrecks the whole thing. It is bad enough the film purposely ignores the end of the first film, but to have an ending which falls with a thud, disappointing for sure.
- DirectorLeigh WhannellStarsElisabeth MossOliver Jackson-CohenHarriet DyerWhen Cecilia's abusive ex takes his own life and leaves her his fortune, she suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of coincidences turn lethal, Cecilia works to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.One of the better Blumhouse films of late, this is more thriller than horror. With an interesting premise and fantastic performance from Moss, a definite higher tier film from Blumhouse.
- DirectorDan ScanlonStarsTom HollandChris PrattJulia Louis-DreyfusIn a magical world full of technological advances, elven brothers Ian and Barley Lightfoot set out on an adventure to resurrect their late father for a day.Not a high tier Pixar film, none the less, it does bring a solid story and emotional beats. The end may be where audiences splinter the most as it goes for the feels, but personally, missed the target.
- DirectorGavin O'ConnorStarsBen AffleckAl MadrigalJanina GavankarJack Cunningham was a high school basketball phenom who walked away from the game, forfeiting his future. Years later, when he reluctantly accepts a coaching job at his alma mater, he may get one last shot at redemption. This is all about the performance from Affleck. His own struggles with alcohol have been widely documented. Doing this film he was right in the middle of his latest bout and the performance he gives is authentic and raw. The ending is not storybook Hollywood, but like with Affleck's performance, honest and emotional.
