A childhood favourite of mine. Nothing too spectacular, nor revolutionary, but a quality family film that I feel justifies the label of a sleeper-hit. - DirectorOliver ParkerStarsRowan AtkinsonRosamund PikeDominic WestJohnny English goes up against international assassins hunting down Chinese Premier Xiang Ping.Rating: 71%
About as good as the last one. I think the good jokes land better but the bad ones fall flatter than in its predecessor. A worthy sequel - DirectorBarry LevinsonStarsRobert De NiroKevin BaconBrad PittAfter a prank goes disastrously wrong, a group of boys are sent to a detention center where they are brutalized. Thirteen years later, an unexpected random encounter with a former guard gives them a chance for revenge.Rating: 76%
Oozing with ambition, Sleepers is a surprisingly under-the-radar film that has some brilliant acting from De Niro, Pitt and Hoffman. It borrows a lot from Scorsese, but does so in a respectable and well-executed manner. Sadly, the 2nd and 3rd acts don't live up to the first, which is really a gem. There were also aspects of the film that were vastly under utilized, particularly De Niro's priest character. A quality film though, that has sadly been overlooked with the passage of time. - DirectorAtom EgoyanStarsArsinée KhanjianAshot AdamyanAtom EgoyanA woman stays in Armenia after her photographer husband completes his assignment and returns home to Canada.Rating: 83.5%
A one-of-a-kind experience that demonstrates an impressive understanding of storytelling through film. Also, as an immigrant that has spent the majority of my life in Canada as "the photographer", I find the themes of identity extremely engaging - DirectorOrson WellesStarsOrson WellesJoseph CottenDorothy ComingoreFollowing the death of publishing tycoon Charles Foster Kane, reporters scramble to uncover the meaning of his final utterance: 'Rosebud.'Rating: 100%
A technical marvel that on a second watch feels like an even more gratifying experience. An emotional journey told in one of the most picture-perfect ways. There's a reason why it's considered the best - DirectorBong Joon HoStarsSong Kang-hoLee Sun-kyunCho Yeo-jeongGreed and class discrimination threaten the newly-formed symbiotic relationship between the wealthy Park family and the destitute Kim clan.Rating: 98%
While I'm hesitant to call this film generational-defining as some have, there is so much to pick here that it is overwhelming. The slow paced character shifts occurring in front of my eyes is one of the most fantastic slow-burn descents into madness, rivalling the Shining. The dissection of class struggle and the futile hunt for wealth is done masterfully and will only get more relevant with time. - DirectorGeorges MélièsStarsGeorges MélièsFernande AlbanyJehanne d'AlcyUsing every known means of transportation, several savants from the Geographic Society undertake a journey through the Alps to the Sun which finishes under the sea.Rating: NR
It's difficult to give thoughts on a film so old and fundamental to cinema, and impossible to put a rating onto it. It's enjoyable and a terrific representation of the elements of mise-en-scene - DirectorD.W. A surprisingly emotional tale for such an old movie. Whatever limits this film has due to silence and time does not stop it from packing a punch - DirectorVincente MinnelliStarsJudy GarlandMargaret O'BrienMary AstorYoung love and childish fears highlight a year in the life of a turn-of-the-century family.Rating: 71.5%
While delightfully charming and catchy, a lot of this film feels meandering and without purpose - DirectorArnold GlassmanTodd McCarthyStuart SamuelsStarsConrad L. Nothing extraordinary, but a nice dive into the development of cinematography as an art form. Not recommended for viewers who don't have some sort of fascination with the craft from beforehand. - DirectorAleksandr SokurovStarsSergey DreydenMariya KuznetsovaLeonid MozgovoyA 19th century French aristocrat, notorious for his scathing memoirs about life in Russia, travels through the Russian State Hermitage Museum and encounters historical figures from the last 200+ years.Rating: 78.%
One of the most challenging movies that somehow makes its dull moments embolden the film as a whole, and deconstructs the human existence simply through the camerawork. A fascinating watch I must return to on a clear mind. - DirectorRobert BressonStarsFrançois LeterrierCharles Le ClaincheMaurice BeerblockA captured French Resistance fighter during World War II engineers a daunting escape from a German prison in France.Rating: 96%
Minimalist in nature but maximalist in its effect. A breathtaking film that never loses its grip on your attention - DirectorWes AndersonStarsRalph FiennesF. Murray AbrahamMathieu AmalricA writer encounters the owner of an aging high-class hotel, who tells him of his early years serving as a lobby boy in the hotel's glorious years under an exceptional concierge.Rating: 100%
It's remarkable how the film, upon repeated viewing, becomes less about the observing of a quaint and quirky distant world, but more about the reminiscing on a past we wish never left us. I could watch this movie every day for the rest of my life - DirectorVsevolod PudovkinStarsVera BaranovskayaNikolay BatalovAleksandr ChistyakovA story about a family torn apart by a worker's strike. The perfect definition of an entertaining thriller. Doesn't overstay it's welcome and adds enough twists and turns to keep me engaged. It ain't Citizen Kane, but it's a damn good watch - DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsNatalie PortmanMila KunisVincent CasselNina is a talented but unstable ballerina on the verge of stardom. Pushed to the breaking point by her artistic director and a seductive rival, Nina's grip on reality slips, plunging her into a waking nightmare.Rating: 86.5%
A breathtaking film about the strive for perfection. While at times cliched and some of the cast have weak performances, the film is incredibly well constructed and Portman gives the performance of a lifetime - DirectorFederico FelliniStarsMagali NoëlBruno ZaninPupella MaggioA series of comedic and nostalgic vignettes set in a 1930s Italian coastal town.Rating: 96%
A beautiful look into the memories of a young man through a year. Introspective about memory, family, love and sex (above all else), it's an amazing adventure that is incredibly beautiful - DirectorMichael MannStarsDaniel Day-LewisMadeleine StoweRussell MeansThree trappers protect the daughters of a British Colonel in the midst of the French and Indian War.Rating: 43%
Incredibly boring with a few scenes as its saving grace. Wooden acting, nonsensical editing, wooden dialogue, ill-timed music, well-shot cinematography that is framed terribly. Why is this so revered? - DirectorNikita MikhalkovStarsNikita MikhalkovIngeborga DapkunaiteOleg MenshikovIn the USSR in 1936, shadows of Stalin's repressions fall on a famous, revolutionary hero. The accusations of him being a foreign spy are nonsense, and everyone knows that. However, a slow process of his downfall has already started.Rating: 78%
A compelling melodrama set in Stalinist Russia that while doesn't reach the philosophical heights it implies with its final title card, still pulls at the heart effectively - DirectorYorgos LanthimosStarsOlivia ColmanEmma StoneRachel WeiszIn early 18th-century England, the status quo at the court is upset when a new servant arrives and endears herself to a frail Queen Anne.Rating: 93.5%

While vastly different from its predecessor, and paced oddly, it's an exciting time. A little bit dated in some places, but it doesn't take away from the experience - DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsHarrison FordSean ConneryAlison DoodyIn 1938, after his father goes missing while pursuing the Holy Grail, Indiana Jones finds himself up against the Nazis again to stop them from obtaining its powers.Rating: 88%

While there is a decent amount of over-dramatization added into it, the emotional and philosophical heights that this film soars to is unparalleled, and the ensemble cast is brilliant. - DirectorJoel SchumacherStarsMichael DouglasRobert DuvallBarbara HersheyAn ordinary man frustrated with the various flaws he sees in society begins to psychotically and violently lash out against them.Rating: 68%
While Duval's performance and story leaves much to be desired, the collapse of Douglas' character as his sanity is chipped away bit by bit is a thrilling ride - DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsHarrison FordCate BlanchettShia LaBeoufIndiana Jones becomes entangled in a Soviet plot to uncover the secret behind mysterious artifacts known as the Crystal Skulls.Rating: 69%
Not overrated so much as it's over-hated. Yeah the alien bit is weird, but the rest of movie is a fun romp - DirectorTim MillerStarsLinda HamiltonArnold SchwarzeneggerMackenzie DavisAn augmented human and Sarah Connor must stop an advanced liquid Terminator from hunting down a young girl, whose fate is critical to the human race.Rating: 60.5%
Meh. It's pretty much become crystal clear that this franchise is going to keep doing the same things over, and over, and over, and over again. Like an endless time loop. Adding Sarah Connor should be great; but Hamilton's performance leaves a lot to be desired. An aging Terminator learning humanity as he integrates to society should be philosophically interesting; but it's kinda brushed aside. Killing John Connor should jolt the franchise into a new direction. But it finds itself going in the same direction as T3 and Genisys did. I guess it's a better movie than Genisys, but other than that, it doesn't have much reason to exist. A shame, really. - DirectorWoody AllenStarsMartin LandauWoody AllenBill BernsteinAn ophthalmologist's mistress threatens to reveal their affair to his wife while a married documentary filmmaker is infatuated with another woman.Rating: 94.5%
Went in expecting a fun Woody Allen movie about adultery and relationships. Left having gone through one of the greatest explorations into the human soul and conscience I have ever seen - DirectorMartin BrestStarsAl PacinoChris O'DonnellJames RebhornA prep school student needing money agrees to "babysit" a blind man, but the job is not at all what he anticipated.Rating: 92%
Pacino really carries this movie, and I can't commend his performance enough. Without him, it'd probably would not be half as memorable as it is. But hey, he absolutely kills it. - DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsBruce WillisHaley Joel OsmentToni ColletteMalcolm Crowe, a child psychologist, starts treating a young boy, Cole, who encounters dead people and convinces him to help them. In turn, Cole helps Malcolm reconcile with his estranged wife.Rating: 93.5%
While it doesn't have that same impact as it did on the first viewing (which is to be expected), the performances (particularly from Cole) really make this movie shine and work even when the twist is known - DirectorAndrei TarkovskyStarsAlisa FreyndlikhAleksandr KaydanovskiyAnatoliy SolonitsynA guide leads two men through an area known as the Zone to find a room that grants wishes.Rating: 100%
Breathtaking. Every frame feels precisely timed and like the culmination of a master at work. While it feels like it sometimes over-complicates its plot developments and rushes through the explanations, this is a great thriller and dissection of the "basic instinct" (fucking or killing) - DirectorBenny SafdieJosh SafdieStarsAdam SandlerJulia FoxIdina MenzelWith his debts mounting and angry collectors closing in, a fast-talking New York City jeweler risks everything in hope of staying afloat and alive.Rating: 82%
Very thrilling and an unrelenting watch. Sometimes it feels like there's some storylines injected simply to insert some more drama and that the script could've been tightened. Otherwise, a great watch! - DirectorAlan J. PakulaStarsDustin HoffmanRobert RedfordJack Warden"The Washington Post" reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein uncover the details of the Watergate scandal that leads to President Richard Nixon's resignation.Rating: 89%
Not quite as effective as the first viewing, but the 2nd viewing helped a lot in piecing together more of the intrigue and understanding how we got from start to finish. In general, I find the 2nd viewing helped me appreciate the filmmaking a lot more – in particular the minimal use of music and how effectively the personalities of the characters are communicated through visual cues without ever once discussing their backgrounds. However, there's something that just falls a bit more flat on rewatch. Still great though! - DirectorStanley KubrickAnthony MannStarsKirk DouglasLaurence OlivierJean SimmonsThe slave Spartacus survives brutal training as a gladiator and leads a violent revolt against the decadent Roman Republic, as the ambitious Crassus seeks to gain power by crushing the uprising.Rating: 79%
The first act is pretty dull but it quickly picks up. Ignoring the appalling racist caricature, this was an absolute joy to watch. These characters and the drama unfolding in their lives is going to stick with me for a long time. - DirectorDavid FincherStarsJake GyllenhaalRobert Downey Jr.Mark RuffaloBetween 1968 and 1983, a San Francisco cartoonist becomes an amateur detective obsessed with tracking down the Zodiac Killer, an unidentified individual who terrorizes Northern California with a killing spree.Rating: 83.5%
Strikingly close to detail and leaves you on your toes throughout - DirectorMike NewellStarsAl PacinoJohnny DeppMichael MadsenAn FBI undercover agent infiltrates the mob and finds himself identifying more with the Mafia life--at the expense of his regular one.Rating: 80%
The first half-hour or so is incredibly cliched and a bit of a slog to get through. The rest is deeply compelling and really enticed me. A different perspective taken on the mobster movie - DirectorRidley ScottStarsDenzel WashingtonRussell CroweChiwetel EjioforAn outcast New York City cop is charged with bringing down Harlem drug lord Frank Lucas, whose real life inspired this partly biographical film.Rating: 95.5%

I had so much fun watching this one - DirectorBilly WilderStarsWilliam HoldenGloria SwansonErich von StroheimA screenwriter develops a dangerous relationship with a faded film star determined to make a triumphant return.Rating: 99.5%
Absolutely enthralling. Easily one of my favourite films from the era. I was surprised at how invested into the characters I ended up being - DirectorAlan J. PakulaStarsJulia RobertsDenzel WashingtonSam ShepardA law student uncovers a conspiracy, putting herself and others in danger.Rating: 82%
Better on my first rewatch in years. Feels almost a tad underrated. The beginning is needlessly convoluted, but the rest of the film is a great thriller - DirectorBernardo BertolucciStarsMarlon BrandoMaria SchneiderMaria MichiA young Parisian woman meets a middle-aged American businessman who demands their clandestine relationship be based only on sex.Rating: 70%
My thoughts are layered. This movie looks and sounds amazing. The dialogue is putrid though. It's difficult for me to wrap my head around whether Bertolucci is genuinely painting Brando's character as the genuine piece of human filth he is or if he's vicariously living out his sexual fantasies through him. I choose to believe the former, for my own sake. Either way, Brando does a heck of a job portraying this particular piece of filth - DirectorBarry LevinsonStarsDustin HoffmanTom CruiseValeria GolinoAfter a selfish L.A. yuppie learns his estranged father left a fortune to an autistic-savant brother in Ohio that he didn't know existed, he absconds with his brother and sets out across the country, hoping to gain a larger inheritance.Rating: 87.5%
Much deeper than what my faint childhood memory of this film had me believe. I enjoyed it a lot, particularly for the performances of the leading co-stars. Lulls in the middle but I found myself genuinely really engaged everywhere else
