King Vidor was an American film director, film producer, and screenwriter of Hungarian descent. He was born in Galveston, Texas to lumberman Charles Shelton Vidor and his wife Kate Wallis. King's paternal grandfather Károly (Charles) Vidor had fled Hungary as a refugee following the failed Hungarian Revolution of 1848 (1849-1849). The Kingdom of Hungary had attempted to gain independence from the Austrian Empire, but the revolutionary troops failed against the allied armies of the Austrian Empire and the Russian Empire. After the restoration of Habsburg power, Hungary was placed under brutal martial law. Karoly fled the country and settled in Galveston, Texas by the early 1850s.
During his childhood, King Vidor was a witness of the 1900 Galveston hurricane, the deadliest natural disaster in United States history. The hurricane caused between 6,000 and 12,000 fatalities in the United States, based on varying estimates. Most of these deaths occurred in the vicinity of Galveston. Every house in the city sustained damage, about 3600 houses were completely destroyed, and an estimated 10,000 people were left homeless, out of a population of about 38,000. King Vidor would later give a somewhat fictionalized account of his hurricane experience in a 1935 interview.
By the early 1910s, Vidor was working as a freelance newsreel cameraman and cinema projectionist. In 1913, he directed the short film "The Grand Military Parade", his directing debut. In 1915, Vidor moved to Hollywood, California and was hired as a screenwriter and short-film director by Judge Willis Brown (1881-1931), owner of the Boy City Film Company in Culver City. Brown had gained fame as a judge of the Utah Juvenile Court and a progressive expert on boys' reformation, but had been kicked out of service when it was discovered that he did not actually have a law degree. Brown had established himself as a film producer in order to produce films depicting his main concerns about American society: juvenile delinquency and racial discrimination. Vidor served as a screenwriter and director of at least 10 films with these topics, while working for Brown.
In 1919, Vidor directed his first feature film: "The Turn in the Road". It was a silent drama film, depicting a businessman who loses his faith in God and any interest in industry, when his beloved wife dies in childbirth. Vidor's first major hit was the feature "Peg o' My Heart" (1922), an adaptation of a popular Broadway theatrical play. Following this success, Vidor was signed to a long-term contract for the studio Goldwyn Pictures. The studio was under the administration of Polish-American producer Samuel Goldwyn (1879-1974). In 1924, Goldwyn Pictures merged with Metro Pictures and Louis B. Mayer Pictures into a new company: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Vidor remained on contract with this new company.
In the 1920s, Vidor's most famous silent feature films were the war film "The Big Parade" (1925), the Academy-Award nominated drama "The Crowd" (1928), the comedy "Show People"" (1928), and the comedy-drama "The Patsy" (1928). His first sound film was the drama "Hallelujah" (1929), about the life of sharecroppers. It was one of the first Hollywood films with a cast consisting fully of African-Americans. Vidor expressed an interest in "showing the Southern Negro as he is" and attempted to depict African-American life beyond the popular stereotypes of the era.
Vidor faced no problem in transitioning from silent film to sound film, and continued regularly working on feature films until the late 1950s. His last major film was the Biblical-romance "Solomon and Sheba" (1959), featuring love, court intrigues, and military invasions during the reign of legendary Solomon, King of Israel (estimated to the 10th century BC). Afterwards he worked on short films and documentaries, his last film being the documentary "The Metaphor" (1980). The 86-year-old Vidor chose to retire from filmmaking in 1980.
In 1982, Vidor died at his ranch in Paso Robles, California, from an unspecified heart disease. He was 88-years-old and well past his prime. His remains were cremated and his ashes were scattered in his ranch.
Vidor was nominated 5 times for the Academy Award for Best Director, without ever winning. He was nominated for the feature films "The Crowd" (1928), "Hallelujah" (1929), "The Champ" (1931), "The Citadel" (1938), and "War and Peace" (1956). He won an Academy Honorary Award in 1979. Part of his modern fame rests on an uncredited part as an assistant director. Vidor directed the scenes set in Kansas for the novel adaptation "The Wizard of Oz" (1939).- Actress

Often considered hip-hop's first lady, the woman behind the moniker Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18, 1970, in East Orange, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Rita (Bray), a teacher, and Lancelot Owens Sr. She came from a police family-both her father and her older brother were cops-which would later influence her rhyming style and life philosophy. Her brother died in a motorcycle accident in 1992. Owens witnessed both sides of black urban life in the USA while growing up. After a brief stint as a Burger King employee, she soon found herself making waves in the hip-hop music scene.
After working as the human beatbox alongside Ladies Fresh, she was just 18 years old when she broke through in the late 1980s with a style that picked selectively from jazz, reggae, and soul traditions, from beats produced by D.J. Mark the 45 King. Her debut single, "Wrath of My Madness," was released in 1988. A year later, her debut long-player, "All Hail the Queen," enjoyed favored reviews: an old, wise head was evident on the top of her young shoulders. The former Burger King employee maintained her early commitment to answering the misogynist armory of some of her male counterparts and, at the same time, imparted musical good times to all genders. Her name means "delicate and sensitive" in Arabic, but she has often been anything but in her rhymes and the messages she sends out through them. One of the most prominent female hip-hop artists on the scene for over a decade, Queen Latifah has also made tremendous inroads in movies, television, and artist management, with her management company, Flavor Unit, alongside her business partner Shakim Compere. A role model who takes the responsibility to heart, Latifah has carefully constructed a fine career for herself-one that is constantly moving upward.- Actor

Queen were one of the longest-lasting and most commercially successful bands to emerge from the British heavy rock scene of the early 1970s, but unlike their contemporaries such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, they soon became just as popular with pop fans as fans of hard rock and heavy metal, beginning with "Killer Queen" from their third album "Sheer Heart Attack" in 1974.
Formed in London in 1970 following the demise of the band Smile, Queen originally consisted of vocalist Freddie Mercury, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor before being joined by bassist John Deacon. The band became popular with audiences via their hit singles, live performances, originality and showmanship, being voted the greatest British band of all time in a national BBC poll. Their Live Aid (1985) performance was voted the best live rock performance of all time in an industry poll. According to the BBC, Queen have sold more than 300 million albums as of 2009.
Queen's first album "Queen" was a commercial flop in 1973, failing to chart and producing no hit single, but their second album "Queen II" produced a top ten hit, "Seven Seas of Rhye". It was with the release of "Sheer Heart Attack" in 1974 and "A Night at the Opera" the following year that the band gained international success. They have released fifteen studio albums, five live albums and numerous compilation albums. Since Mercury's death and Deacon's retirement, May and Taylor have performed infrequently together at special events and programs as members of other ensembles. Between 2004 to 2009 the duo collaborated with Paul Rodgers under the moniker Queen + Paul Rodgers, and between 2011 to 2015 with Adam Lambert under the moniker Queen + Adam Lambert.- Music Artist

Nat King Cole was born Nathaniel Adams Coles (he later dropped the "s" in his surname) in Montgomery, Alabama. He received music lessons from his mother and his family moved to Chicago when he was only five, where his father, Edward James Coles, was a minister at the True Light Baptist Church and later Pastor of the First Baptist Church. At 12, he was playing the church organ. At age 14, he formed a 14 piece band called the Royal Dukes. Nat was a top flight sandlot baseball player at Wendell Phillips high school in Chicago.
His three brothers, Ike, Frankie, and Eddie Cole, also played the piano and sang professionally. Nat was an above-average football player in high school. His sister, Evelyn Cole, was a beautician in nearby Waukegan, Illinois. In 1939 he formed the King Cole Trio after his publicist put a silver tin-foiled crown on his head and proclaimed him "King". He later toured Europe and made a command performance before Queen Elizabeth II.
He had a highly-rated TV show in the 1950s but it was canceled (by Cole himself) as no companies could be found that were willing to sponsor the show. He was a big baseball fan and had a permanent box seat at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. He met his wife Maria Cole (a big-band singer) at the Zanzibar nightclub in Los Angeles through Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson show. Her parents opposed her decision to marry Cole, claiming he was "too black". They married, nonetheless, in 1948, and had two daughters, Caroline and Natalie Cole. On April 10, 1956, at Birmingham, Alabama, he was attacked by six white men from a white supremacist group called the White Cizizens Council during a concert and sustained minor injuries to his back. Cole appeared in several movies, the last of which was Cat Ballou (1965), starring Lee Marvin.
Cole received 28 gold record awards for such hits as "Sweet Lorraine", "Ramblin' Rose" in 1962, "Too Young" in 1951, "Mona Lisa" in 1949 and Mel Tormé's "Christmas Song". His first recordings of the Christmas Song included the lyrics, "Reindeers really know how to fly" instead of "reindeer really know how to fly", a mistake later corrected by Capitol Records. He was also a composer and his song "Straighten Up and Fly Right" was sold for $50.00. A heavy smoker, he died of lung cancer.- Elizabeth II was Queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms.
Elizabeth was born in London, the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and she was educated privately at home. Her father ascended the throne on the abdication of his brother King Edward VIII in 1936, from which time she was the heir presumptive. She began to undertake public duties during the Second World War, serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. In 1947, she married Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, a former prince of Greece and Denmark, with whom she had four children: Charles, Prince of Wales; Anne, Princess Royal; Prince Andrew, Duke of York; and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.
When her father died in February 1952, Elizabeth became head of the Commonwealth and queen regnant of seven independent Commonwealth countries: the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon. She reigned as a constitutional monarch through major political changes, such as devolution in the United Kingdom, Canadian patriation, and the decolonization of Africa. Between 1956 and 1992, the number of her realms varied as territories gained independence, and as realms, including South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon (renamed Sri Lanka), became republics. Her many historic visits and meetings included a state visit to the Republic of Ireland and visits to or from five popes. Significant events included her coronation in 1953 and the celebrations of her Silver, Golden, and Diamond Jubilees in 1977, 2002, and 2012, respectively. In 2017, she became the first British monarch to reach a Sapphire Jubilee. She was the longest-lived and longest-reigning British monarch. - Queen Mary was born Victoria Mary Augusta Louise Olga Pauline Claudine Agnes Mary in Kensington Palace on May 26, 1867 to Duke Francis and Duchess Mary of Teck. Young Mary was the great-granddaughter of George III and a second cousin to Queen Victoria.
She and her family lived a quiet life in England, forced to exist on the money that Duchess Mary's mother the Duchess of Cambridge was able to give them. Unfortunately the money was not enough to keep the creditors away and in 1883 the family moved around Europe, settling in Italy for awhile.
They went around Europe for two years before settling again in London. After this Mary, as she was called, became her mother's unofficial secretary. Mary spent much of her time corresponding with her family including her Aunt who lived in Germany. She also corresponded with her cousin (and future sister-in-law) Maude (the daughter of future King Edward VII).
In 1891, at the behest of Queen Victoria, Mary was engaged to Queen Victoria's grandson Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence. Unfortunately Albert died shortly afterwards. Queen Victoria, however, suggested that Mary marry Albert's brother George.
Although it was an arranged marriage George and Mary fell deeply in love and on July 6, 1893 they were married.
Over the course of their marriage the Yorks (they were Duke and Duchess of York until his father became King) had six children: Prince Edward in 1894, Prince Albert in 1895, Mary in 1897, George, Duke of Kent in 1902, and Prince John in 1905.
In January 1901 Queen Victoria died and Mary's father-in-law became King Edward VII. This led Mary and George to be Prince and Princess of Wales about a year later.
In 1910 her father-in-law died and Mary became Queen Mary. As Queen she helped her husband with his new role as King. She was the Queen Consort for about 25 years before her husband died in January of 1936.
Her oldest son Edward became Edward VIII after the death of George V. Shortly afterwards she was shocked and saddened to hear that her son would renounce his throne to marry Wallis Warfield Simpson.
Her second son, Albert, then became King choosing to name himself King George VI. She supported her son and his wife in their new role being the first dowager Queen to go to a successor's coronation. While the new King and Queen traveled around the British Commonwealth, Queen Mary helped look after their two young daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret.
During World War Two, the King was worried about his mother's safety and he suggested that she move somewhere in the country where it would be safer. She did what he asked and went to live with her niece, only leaving the house shortly after the war in Europe was over.
She spent the remaining years of her life devoting herself to charities. She also liked obtaining jewels including the jewels of Empress Marie of Russia (Nicholas II's mother). During this time she also spent time with her great-grandchildren, Charles and Anne, helping look after them when their parents (Elizabeth and Prince Phillip) were away helping the ailing king.
In 1952 her son King George VI died of lung cancer. She was sick at the time with lung cancer as well, and shortly before the coronation of her granddaughter Elizabeth, she died. - Actor

- He was the eldest son of the Jordanian royal couple: King Ibn Talal Hussein (1935-1999) came to the throne in 1952 and was married to the British Toni Gardiner for the second time until 1971. Thanks to his British mother, Abdullah was able to attend school in England and then college in the USA. After school, he trained at US and British military academies. In this context, he also stayed temporarily with the British occupying troops in the Federal Republic. He dropped out of a political science course that Abdullah was pursuing at the universities of Oxford and Georgetown without graduating. After returning home, Abdullah pursued a career in the Jordanian military.
In 1994 he was promoted to major general. Although Abdullah's uncle, Hassan Ibn Talal, had previously been appointed crown prince, the cancer-stricken king named his eldest son as heir to the throne in January 1999. When his father succumbed to his illness on February 7, 1999, the crown prince was proclaimed King of Jordan as Abdullah II on the same day. A month later, the new head of state expressed his desire for renewal by appointing a new government. As a result, Abdullah II demonstrated unusual assertiveness on the issue of the Palestinians, from whom at least 60% of the population comes: the new king banned the controversial "Hamas" movement, deported its leaders and arrested many members.
After Jordan had supported neighboring dictator Saddam Hussein during the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait in the early 1990s, the country now sought to adopt a self-confident attitude towards Iraq and to move closer to the Western world as well as to Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Internally, however, Abdullah II was unable to initiate the urgently needed economic and administrative reforms. A democratic opening and revitalization of the country's political culture was neglected. Immediately after the terrorist attack on the USA on September 11, 2001, controlled by Osama bin Laden, Abdullah II represented to the West in February 2002 the demand for comprehensive economic aid for the Arab-Muslim countries.
In contrast, Jordan remains subject to police-state conditions in the political sphere, which foreign media also feel: In the summer of 2002, the station of the TV channel "Al Jasira" was closed because of critical reporting on the Israel policy of Abdullah II's predecessors to the throne and the journalists expelled. Abdullah II has been married to Rania Al-Jassin, a native of Palestine, since 1993, with whom they have four children: Prince Hussein (1994), Princess Iman (1996), Princess Salma (2000) and Prince Hashim (2005). - Actress

Her mother was a daughter of the Swedish royal family, whose reigning king Folke Hubertus Carl XVI. Gustaf is therefore Margrethe's uncle. As a result of a constitutional change in 1953, with which Frederik IX. had also introduced female succession to the throne, Margrethe was officially sworn in as heir to the throne according to the Danish constitution when she came of age on April 16, 1958. After private school education, which also took Margrethe to England, she graduated from high school in 1960. She then completed a one-year law study abroad at the Sorbonne in Paris. This was followed by studying law, political science, economics and history in Copenhagen and Aarhus. Margrethe completed her studies with further stays abroad at the University of Cambridge and the London School of Economics.
Margrethe was already being prepared for her future high office during her school and university years. While traveling at home and abroad, she got to know her own country and the world as well as the representative functions of the Danish head of state. In 1967, the Crown Princess married the French diplomat Count Henri de Laborde de Monpezat. After she had already taken over the regency at the beginning of 1972 due to her father's illness, she succeeded the late Frederik IX on January 14, 1972. on the throne. Since then, as Chairwoman of the State Council and Head of State, Margrethe II has primarily performed representative functions in coordination with the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister. However, she also uses the public influence given to her for socio-political commitment, through which she has campaigned against increasing xenophobia in recent years.
The Queen and Prince Henrik of Denmark made numerous state trips through Europe, the Far East and North and South America. The general popularity that Margrethe II enjoyed as monarch made the Danish monarchy an institution recognized by the population and still popular today. In addition to state affairs, the Queen is also artistically talented in many ways. In 1977, for example, she illustrated Tolkien's bestseller "Lord of the Rings". She has already made a name for herself as a costume designer for the theater, as an interior designer and as a ballet dancer. Margrethe II of Denmark was, among other things, awarded honorary doctorates from the Universities of Cambridge and London. In 2000 she received an honorary doctorate from the University of Edinburgh. She has two sons with Prince Henrik of Denmark.- Actress

Albert Frederick Arthur George was born on December 14, 1895, to the future King George V and Queen Mary who was born a Princess of Teck. It was the anniversary of the death of Queen Victoria's husband Albert the Prince Consort, his great-grandfather, so it was obvious that his name would start with Albert. He had a nervous stammer, possibly because his father made him write with his right hand when he was naturally left-handed. In 1920 he was created Duke of York, and in 1923 he married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother), the daughter of the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. In 1926 they had their first child, a daughter named Elizabeth, and four years later another daughter named Margaret. Albert's father died in January 1936, making his brother King Edward VIII. Edward abdicated in December 1936 to marry a twice-divorced American woman, putting England in a crisis. Albert then became King George VI, taking his father's regnal name, and his wife became Queen Elizabeth. His first act as King was to make his brother the Duke of Windsor. A few years later World War II broke out; the royal family stayed in Buckingham Palace even after it was bombed. A lifelong heavy smoker, the King died in 1952; at the time no connection was realised between smoking and the lung cancer that caused his death.
Of his six grandchildren, only two had been born before his death: Charles, who became Prince of Wales, and Anne, who became Princess Royal. His elder daughter, Elizabeth, became Queen Elizabeth II, and his wife became styled Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.- Queen Bluee was born in the USA.

- Queen Alexandra was born Princess Alexandra Caroline Mary Charlotte Louisa Julia on December 1, 1844. She was the granddaughter of the king of Denmark. She lived an uneventful childhood in the palaces of Denmark with her sister, Marie, who became the mother of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. When Alex, as she was called, turned 16 she was considered a great beauty, and won the hand of the heir to the throne of England. She and Prince Albert Edward, or "Bertie", were married on March 10, 1863. They had six children including the future King George V. The first 40 years of marriage were very turbulent for Alexandra. As well as the six children, she had to contend with a brother-in-law (the husband of Bertie's sister Helena) whose family wanted a stake in the Schleswig-Holstein lands that had belonged to the kings of Denmark for generations. Finally in 1901 her mother-in-law, Queen Victoria, died, making her husband King Edward VII and she, in turn, Queen Consort. During her time as Queen she did many things to make England better, including the establishment of The Red Cross.
In 1910, however, something happened to change everything. Her husband of almost 50 years died. On his death bed she did a very magnanimous thing: she allowed his mistress, Alice Keppel, to say goodbye to him. After his death she lived at the house in which she had lived during her marriage. Unfortunately, she also lived with the increasing deafness that plagued her life as well as that of her son Albert Victor, who would have become king if he had not died. Alexandra died in 1925 of a heart attack and is buried at Windsor near her husband and mother and father-in-law. - King Ghidorah is known for Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019).

St. Louis-born King Baggot traveled to New York City with the express intent of crashing Broadway, but began his film career in nearby Fort Lee, NJ, in 1909. It didn't take long before he graduated from actor to writer and director--at times performing all three functions; in Shadows (1914) he not only directed but played ten different parts--and his efforts paid off, becoming a major star in the industry. Baggot was actually the first "star" to be given billing by his studio and his featured in its advertising. His most famous film as director would probably be the classic William S. Hart western Tumbleweeds (1925).
Baggot's career as a director faded with the coming of sound, but he continued his work as an actor, although often in bit parts. Still, he had an impressive career--more than 340 films as an actor and 45 as a director. He made his last film in 1947 and died of a stroke in 1948 in Los Angeles, CA.- Prince Albert Edward Wettin Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was born on November 9, 1841 to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Great Britain. He was the second child and first son which meant that he would become King after his mother died. As he grew up he was compared unfavorably to his father and then his very bright older sister, Vicky. His childhood was unsubstantial. He went to school and periodically went on vacation to Osborne House, or Balmoral. When he was about 20 years old he was sent to Scotland to undergo a sort of boot camp for the army. While he was there he had his first taste of sex when his friends put Nelly Clifton in his bed. He was very discreet about the affair but his father's friends found out about it and told him. Prince Albert, who was sick, made the journey to Oxford where Bertie, as he was called, was at University. Albert told his son that he should forget about it because the consequences for that type of lifestyle would be too great. Albert returned to London and shortly afterward died. Victoria blamed Bertie for the rest of her life. It was also around this time that Bertie got married. His choice of a wife was very important because she would someday be the Queen. He met Alexandra, a Danish Princess, on what was essentially a blind date. Queen Victoria knew that he would not accept anybody that the family would pick out for him so she had Alexandra meet him at a designated site in Germany. On March 10, 1863 they were married and eventually had six children together. Even though he was the Prince of Wales his mother did not involve him in matters of state. Because of this he had no demands on his time and did what he liked. What he liked was drinking, having sex, and having fun with his friends. During the almost 40 years between the time he married and the time he became King, Bertie allegedly fathered several children besides the ones with his wife. In January 1901 his mother died, making him King Edward VII. He only reigned for a short time before many years of drinking and overeating led him to die at the age of 68 in 1910.

In Silvia's youth, the family moved to Brazil, where Walter and Alice once had met. Walter worked for a major company in that country. After Walter's death, it was revealed that he had been a member of the Nazi Party during the Third Reich, a story that caused some stir. Silvia has always declined to comment on her father's past. He died in 1990. Her mother Alice suffered from Alzheimer's disease during her last years and died in 1997. Silvia served as hostess at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. That is where she met crown prince Carl Gustav of Sweden. They fell in love, but kept their relationship private for some time. - Victoria Eugenia von Battenberg, always called "Ena", was born in Scotland on October 24, 1887, the only daughter of Prince Henry von Battenberg and Princess Beatrice, herself one of Queen Victoria's daughters. 1887 was also Queen Victoria's Jubilee Year, and in her honor her little granddaughter Ena was called the "Jubilee Princess". Her father had been obliged to live with his mother-in-law in order to marry the princess, but in 1896 he set off on the Ashanti expedition to West Africa, where he died of malaria. After turning down a marriage proposal from a Russian Grand Duke, Ena caught the eye of King Alfonso XIII, and her uncle King Edward VII gave her the title of Royal Highness in order to compensate for her morganatic status. After the wedding in 1906, Ena and Alfonso were returning to the Palace when a bomb was thrown at their carriage. It exploded and killed 24 people and wounded more than a 100. Though not injured, Ena was covered with the blood of a nearby decapitated guard. The royal couple had their first child, son and heir Prince Alfonso, in 1907, but much to their dismay he was a hemophiliac. Like so many of the female members of her family, Ena was a carrier of hemophilia (one of her brothers also suffered from hemophilia which killed him in 1922). The second son, Jaime, was deaf and their youngest Gonzalo was also a hemophiliac. Only the middle son, Juan, was healthy. Alfonso blamed Ena for their children's health problems, and their marriage deteriorated. In 1931, the King went into exile after Republican demonstrations and abdicated the throne of Spain in 1941. In 1934 Ena's children, Beatriz and Gonzalo, were in a car accident; though they were barely injured, Gonzalo was unable to stop bleeding and died at the age of 19. His eldest brother Alfonso also died in a car accident in Florida in 1938. Disheartened by the deaths of her children and the disintegration of her family, Ena lived throughout Europe for the rest of her life. She returned to Spain briefly in 1968 to stand as godmother to her great-grandson, Crown Prince Felipe. She was greeted warmly by the crowds, and when she left 50,000 people said goodbye to her at the airport. Victoria Eugenia von Battenberg, called "Ena", died on April 15, 1969.

Queen Legend is known for Motherland: Fort Salem (2020), Sacred Lies (2018) and Sight Unseen (2024).- George V was the King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions from 1910 until his death in 1936. He was the second son of Edward VII of the United Kingdom and Alexandra of Denmark. George outlived his older brother Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale (1864-1892), who died during a flu pandemic in the early 1890s. George served as the heir to the throne from 1901 to 1910, and eventually succeeded his father. George's reign covered the entire World War I (1914-1918) and much of the interwar period (1918-1939). In 1917, George changed the name of the British royal house from House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to House of Windsor. in reaction to anti-German public sentiment in the UK. George appointed the first Labour ministry in 1924, and in 1931 he was the founding monarch of the Commonwealth of Nations. George suffered from smoking-related health problems, and he was incapacitated and terminally ill by January 1936. His physician euthanized him. Two of George's sons subsequently reigned as Edward VIII (reigned 1936) and George VI (reigned 1936-1952).
In 1865, George was born in London. At the time, his father was the heir apparent of the reigning monarch, Queen Victoria (reigned 1837-1901). George's maternal grandfather was Christian IX of Denmark (reigned 1863-1906), who was nicknamed as "the father-in-law of Europe" for marrying most of his children into the leading royal families of Europe. As the second son of his father, George was not considered a likely hired to the throne.
George's father wanted his son to have a military education. In 1877, George enlisted in the Royal Navy at the age of 12. He joined a ship reserved for the training of cadets. During the late 1870s, George traveled the world aboard a British ship. In 1881, George visited Japan. He hired a local artist to tattoo his arm, choosing to display the image of a dragon on his arm. He continued his active naval service until 1892, and was for a while the commanding officer of the HMS Thrush and the HMS Melampus. Despite being a world-traveler, George failed to acquire fluency in any language other than English. His grandmother Victoria was disappointed that her grandson could not converse in either French or German.
As a youth, George fell in love with his cousin, Princess Marie of Edinburgh. But her mother disapproved of their courtship, and Marie herself rejected George's marriage proposal. Marie would later marry Ferdinand I of Romania (reigned 1914-1927). In 1892, Albert Victor died and George became his father's intended heir. At the time of his death, Albert Victor was engaged to Mary of Teck. Following his brother's death, George bonded with the mourning Mary. He proposed marriage to her in 1893, with the support of his grandmother. The couple were married in July 1893. George reportedly found it difficult to express his feelings in speech, but found it easier to write about them. So he continued writing love letters to Mary during the years of their marriage.
In 1892, George was granted the title of the Duke of York by his grandmother. George and his wife settled at York Cottage in Norfolk, a relatively small residence. Unlike his socialite father Edward, George desired a quiet life for himself. George's lifestyle during the 1890s resembled that of the British middle class, rather than that of the British royalty. His main hobby was stamp collecting, and he was eventually responsible for the expansion of the Royal Philatelic Collection.
In January 1901, Queen Victoria died and her son succeeded her as Edward VII. George inherited the title of the Duke of Cornwall, and started styling himself as the Duke of Cornwall and York. That year, George and Mary toured the British Empire. George personally presented thousands of medals to the soldiers of the still ongoing Second Boer War (1899-1902). George opened the first session of the Australian Parliament during his visit of Australia. His visit in New Zealand was primarily used as an opportunity to advertise New Zealand's attractiveness to potential tourists and immigrants through a press campaign.
In November 1901, George was granted the title of the Prince of Wales by his father. For the first time, his father trusted him with wide access to state documents. George in turn shared his documents with his wife Mary, who served as his primary advisor and speech writer. In his new role as the heir to the throne, George supported reforms in naval training. He wanted the cadets of the Royal Navy to have a shared educational background, regardless of their specific assignments.
In May 1910, Edward VII died and George succeeded him. He genuinely mourned his father, writing in his diary that they had never quarreled with each other, and that his father had been his best friend. George objected to the wording of his intended Accession Declaration, as he found the anti-Catholic phrases to be objectionable. At his insistence, most of the anti-Catholic phrases were removed.
In June 1911, George and Mary were coronated at Westminster Abbey. In December 1911, George was officially declared the new Emperor of India at a ceremony in Delhi. At the ceremony, George was wearing the then-new Imperial Crown of India. He announced the transfer of the capital of India from Calcutta to Delhi. George subsequently visited Nepal, and took time off for big game hunting. He took pride in killing 21 tigers, 8 rhinoceroses and a bear during his hunting in Nepal.
In July 1914, George orchestrated the Buckingham Palace Conference to negotiate the topic of Irish Home Rule. Rival political factions in Ireland had become radicalized, and George hoped to prevent a new Irish Civil War. The conference ended without an agreement. In August 1914, George took part in the council which declared war against the German Empire. Wilhelm II of Germany (reigned 1888-1918) was his first cousin, but their diplomatic relationships had deteriorated.
In July 1917, George officially renamed the British royal house: from the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to the House of Windsor. He and all his British relatives relinquished their German titles and started adopting British-sounding surnames. Any member of the wider royal family who sided with Germany lost his/her British peerage titles through the rules of the "Titles Deprivation Act 1917".
Following the end of World War I, George rarely left the UK on official business. He visited Belgium and France in 1922, and Italy in 1923. These were his final diplomatic visits. George was horrified at the violence of the Irish War of Independence (1919 - 1921), and repeatedly called for negotiations between the rival factions of the war. The war led to an Anglo-Irish treaty and the 1922 partition of Ireland.
George was worried about the republican movement in the post-war UK, and tried to increase his support from the major parliamentarian parties of the country. During the 1920s, George cultivated friendly relations with moderate politicians of the Labour Party politicians and with trade union officials. In 1926, George hosted the Imperial Conference in London. By its decisions, the British Dominions became autonomous, and were no longer subordinate to the UK. In 1931, the Statute of Westminster 1931 formalized the Dominions' legislative independence. It marked the transformation of the British Empire into the Commonwealth of Nations, with George as the official head of the Commonwealth.
In the 1930s, George was increasingly hostile to the Nazi government of Germany. In 1934, George expressed his belief that Britain and Germany were heading for a new war. In 1935, George celebrated his Silver Jubilee and was met with adulation by the crowds. His efforts to increase the popularity of the British monarchy had apparently paid off, though he was surprised at the extend of his own personal popularity.
George was a heavy smoker, and had been suffering from chronic bronchitis since the mid-1920s. In 1928, he was diagnosed with septicemia at the base of his right lung. In the final year of his life, George required the administration of oxygen. On 15 January, 1936, George was seriously ill, bedridden, and drifting in and out of consciousness. By January 20, there was no sign of recovery and the incapacitated George required sedatives to deal with the pain. His chief physician Bertrand Dawson, 1st Viscount Dawson of Penn decided to euthanize the king, and surreptitiously injected George with a fatal dose of cocaine and morphine. Since the king was never asked for his consent to the physician's decision, the decision's legality has been questioned.
George was 70-years-old at the time of his death. George was interred at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. The chapel had served as the chosen burial place for the British royal family since the 1810s. Following George's example, his successors have mostly tried to reflect the values and virtues of the British upper middle-class. - Lisa Najeeb Halaby was born in 1951 to Najeeb and Doris Halaby in California. - Queen Marie of Romania was born Princess Marie of England on October 29, 1875. She was the daughter of Queen Victoria's son Albert and his wife Marie who was the daughter of Czar Alexander II of Russia.
She spent much of her early life in England, but her father was a navy man so she moved from England to Malta and then to Germany when she was young. She spent much of her time growing up with her brothers and sisters as well as her many cousins. When she was a teenager her cousin, the future King George V of England visited her in Malta. During these visits they fell in love and wanted to marry. However their mothers did not like this idea.
Shortly after nixing the idea of her nephew being her son-in law Marie's mother decided to set Marie up with Grand Duke Ferdinand, the heir to the King of Romania. Shortly after the marriage they moved to Romania where they lived in a castle with Ferdinand's Uncle King Carol I. Shortly after this Marie became pregnant later giving birth to future King Carol II. This led to Marie giving birth to six little princes and princesses some of which where not the children of Ferdinand and several of whom would marry the children of Marie's cousin Sophie, Queen of Greece.
Marie's life in Romania was not an easy on. She did not always get along with Ferdinand and his Uncle and Ferdinand's Aunt Elisabeth (or Carmen Sylvia) treated Marie with contempt by taking away her children. To make her life more bearable Marie would frequently leave Romania, going to Germany to visit her mother and sisters, or Russia to visit her cousins the Czar and Czarina Nicholas and Alexandra. She did this numerous times, but twice she did this because she was pregnant with children that were not Ferdinand's.
Things where not easier once Ferdinand became King in October of 1914. World War One had started in Europe and it was an awful time for her and her family spread from Spain to Russia. After the war was not easy either with her son and then grandson on the throne. In 1938 the Second World War was soon to start, but Marie was not feeling well. She had internal hemorrhages that killed her on July 18 of that year. - Born in Accra, Ghana and migrating to England at age 13, King discovered his passion for Acting at age 17 while attending Palmer's Sixth Form College where a drama teacher spotted his keen interest and encouraged him to apply to join the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain. The last reigning monarch of the Hawai'ian Islands, she became Queen of Hawai'i upon the death of her brother, King KalÄkaua I, in 1891. She reigned for just under two years and was then overthrown in 1893 by a group in the white business community led by Sanford Dole, cousin of pineapple magnate James Dole. This effort was backed with the threat of force from combined forces of the United States Navy and Marine Corps. The American minister in Hawai'i, John L. Stevens, had troops take over Iolani Palace, the Honolulu residence of the Queen, as well as other governmental buildings and in 1894, the Queen was deposed, ending centuries of monarchial rule and establishing the Republic of Hawai'i with Sanford Dole as its first president.
In 1895, Liliuokalani was accused of attempting to regain the throne after weapons were found in the gardens of her home in Washington Place in Honolulu. She was arrested but denied knowledge of the existence of these weapons, claiming that any plan of rebellion was due to the efforts of others and in 1896, she was released after the perpetrators were caught. At the request of the Queen, Dole subsequently granted all of them a pardon. The former Queen lived the remainder of her life at Washington Place, now the official residence of the Governor of Hawai'i. Dole led a successful effort to lobby Congress for the annexation of Hawai'i to the United States for economic exploitation, which occurred in 1898 through a joint resolution of Congress. Liliuokalani died due to complications from a stroke in 1917.- In 1972, the four original members of King Harvest signed with the Perception label. Their first single, leased by Perception from the French company Musidisc, was one-time band member Sherman Kelly's "Dancing in the Moonlight". It reached number 13 in the US in early 1973 and number 5 in Canada. They made other singles, but by the mid-1970s had disbanded. A new King Harvest, which included the four original members, was formed in 1974 with LA drummer Richie Pidanik. With support from Beach Boys members Carl Wilson and Mike Love, they were signed to A&M Records and made another album, but, failing to achieve any hits, subsequently broke up. Novak, Altbach, Tuleja, and Figueroa toured with the Beach Boys. Tuleja and Novak played on Dennis Wilson's 1977 solo Pacific Ocean Blue, while Altbach and Robinson performed with Mike Love in his band, Celebration.
