- DirectorPan NalinStarsAmy MagheraRajshri DeshpandePavleen GujralA photographer invites her closest friends to vacation at her family's home in Goa in celebration of her upcoming marriage.(9/10) Very emotionally impactful, very sexy, very vibrant and cultural, and very important
-An American lesbian - DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaOscar IsaacThe surviving Resistance faces the First Order once again in the conclusion of the Skywalker saga.(9.5/10) The most impressive Star Wars film to date with ambitious set design and brilliant acting and characterization
- DirectorDaniel Gray LonginoStarsDavid HarbourKate BerlantAlex Ozerov-MeyerDavid Harbour delves into the enigmatic history of his legendary acting family, as he examines his father's legacy and role in a made-for-TV play.(?/10) Clearly unfinished but had potential
- DirectorDuncan JonesStarsSam RockwellKevin SpaceyDominique McElligottAstronaut Sam Bell has a quintessentially personal encounter toward the end of his three-year stint on the Moon, where he, working alongside his computer, GERTY, sends back to Earth parcels of a resource that has helped diminish our planet's power problems.(9/10) A profound philosophical journey with personality. Vibrant set, costume, and compositional design.
Watch this instead of 2001: A Space Oddessey - DirectorAnthony ChunKazuhiro FuruhashiJunji NishimuraStarsRichard AyoadeJulian BarrattRowan BlanchardThe holidays take a hit as Kaz juggles the Secret Santa competition, his Aunt Angelique's visit and his nemesis Arcangelo's Christmas plotting.(8.5/10) Neo Yokio is as stupidly self-aware and stupidly indulgent as ever. Richard Ayoade, Jaden Smith, and Jude Law deliver as always. I liked season 1 slightly more but that’s just preference
- DirectorMadeleine SamiJackie van BeekStarsMadeleine SamiJackie van BeekJames RollestonFor the right price, BFFs Jen and Mel will ruthlessly end any romance. But when one grows a conscience, it threatens to derail their relationship.(7.5/10) A gutsy, brave, silly and authentically human comedy. Some decisions were a bit strange and other’s problematic, but on the whole I was very impressed by the believable female protagonists and the risks taken to make a comedy bold in such new ways.
- DirectorGrant SputoreStarsLuke HawkerRose ByrneMaddie LentonIn the wake of humanity's extinction, a teenage girl is raised by a robot designed to repopulate the earth. But their unique bond is threatened when an inexplicable stranger arrives with alarming news.(10/10) This is the ultimate epic & cerebral hard sci-fi masterpiece. I am puzzled by the low rating. I can imagine the all-female-cast may have affected it. Their loss, every performance is stunning and the edgy story makes a philosophical classic.
Interesting fact: no characters have actual names unless you count “Mother” - CreatorThomas CailleySébastien MounierStarsYvan AttalGarance MarillierNiels SchneiderIn a future where regeneration technology lets humans live indefinitely, a cop and a troubled young woman investigate a strange wave of youth suicides.(8/10) Overall series: Ad Vitam is a conceptual mystery cop show that intoxicates me with its philosophical questions, and kept me interested through compelling character stories. The aesthetic decisions in the show range from very intriguing and beautiful, to very well thought out, to incredibly tacky and cliche. However, after watching the series in entirety the world building made these decisions make more sense. It is not about our far future, it is about futuristic ideas that might await us in our future placed in a very fictional utopian society with a history unconnected to our own. It doesn’t take place in far-future France, or even near-future France. It takes place in a utopian country with lots of coast, and even though places like North America and Japan exist the idea of an “outside world” is thought of as a ridiculous idea (and originally misunderstood to mean heaven). Also, although I do love some of the characters, I do prefer more playful characters. This is another reason I do not give it a higher rating, based on my personal preference.
- DirectorWerner HerzogStarsWerner HerzogJean ClottesJulien MonneyWerner Herzog gains exclusive access to film inside the Chauvet caves of Southern France and captures the oldest known pictorial creations of humanity.(9/10) Very very good documentary. Very inspired. Watched for a class and am pleasantly surprised. The subject matter is haunting and beautiful, and it was portrayed as such, to a profound degree. There was an unusual side step at the end, otherwise would be 10/10.
- DirectorChristopher CaldwellZeek EarlStarsSophie ThatcherJay DuplassPedro PascalA teenage girl and her father travel to a remote alien moon, aiming to strike it rich. They've secured a contract to harvest a large deposit of the elusive gems hidden in the depths of the moon's toxic forest. But there are others roving the wilderness and the job quickly devolves into a fight to survive. Forced to contend not only with the forest's other ruthless inhabitants, but with her own father's greed-addled judgment, the girl finds she must carve her own path to escape.(8/10) Really inspired, interesting, and bizarre. Feels more like a novel than a movie. I dig it.
- DirectorMakoto ShinkaiStarsMiyu IrinoKana HanazawaFumi HiranoOn a rainy morning in Tokyo, 15-year-old Takao, an aspiring shoemaker, decides to skip class to sketch designs in a beautiful garden. This is where he meets Yukari, a beautiful yet mysterious woman. They strike an unlikely friendship.(9/10) understated gem
- DirectorDK WelchmanHugh WelchmanStarsDouglas BoothJerome FlynnRobert GulaczykIn a story depicted in oil painted animation, a young man comes to the last hometown of painter Vincent van Gogh to deliver the troubled artist's final letter and ends up investigating his final days there.(8/10)
- DirectorCathy YanStarsMargot RobbieRosie PerezMary Elizabeth WinsteadAfter splitting with the Joker, Harley Quinn joins superheroines Black Canary, Huntress, and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from an evil crime lord.
- DirectorLana WachowskiLilly WachowskiStarsKeanu ReevesLaurence FishburneCarrie-Anne MossWhen a beautiful stranger leads computer hacker Neo to a forbidding underworld, he discovers the shocking truth--the life he knows is the elaborate deception of an evil cyber-intelligence.(9/10) Foundational, stylish, epic. Genre defining. Exciting. Cheesy, quirky, creative. Important.
- CreatorAron Eli ColeiteBrad PeytonStarsColin FordAlyvia Alyn LindSophie SimnettHigh school outcast Josh is searching for his missing girlfriend in post apocalyptic Glendale. He's joined by a group of misfits Angelica and his former bully Wesley. On the way they'll face many weird things.(8.5/10) This was a really amazing show. I accidentally deleted my description just now and it’s really hard to actually summarize what I wrote, so I’ll be as brief as I can. The themes, world building and characters were phenomenal and heartfelt and intriguing af. The first few episodes had clunky cringe writing but they improved. The genre-bending was too ambitious but overall fun. I didn’t feel like the last episode was what it could have been as a conclusion but it was still wonderful. Every episode was intriguing and good. Overall, enjoyed tf out of it.
- CreatorZach KaninTim RobinsonStarsTim RobinsonSam RichardsonPatti HarrisonA sketch show where Tim Robinson and his guests spend each segment driving someone to the point of needing -- or desperately wanting -- to leave.(8/10) just pretty fckin hilarious
- DirectorJohn KrasinskiStarsEmily BluntJohn KrasinskiMillicent SimmondsA family struggles for survival in a world where most humans have been killed by blind but noise-sensitive creatures. They are forced to communicate in sign language to keep the creatures at bay.(8/10) just good. I think the second part will be more my tea, but very impressive
- DirectorAlfonso CuarónStarsJulianne MooreClive OwenChiwetel EjioforIn 2027, in a chaotic world in which women have somehow become infertile, a former activist agrees to help transport a miraculously pregnant woman to a sanctuary at sea.(9.5/10) Based on the cinematography alone, this is the best movie I’ve ever seen. The politics are incredibly aware, the long shots are beautiful, the symbolism is monumental and incredible. Every moment feels immersive and emotional and real.
- DirectorPaul F. BernardStarsShemar MooreAlex RussellLina EscoThe SWAT team's search for an abducted teen leads them to a member of the Witness Protection Program and a decades-old political extremist group. Also, Hondo and his girlfriend disagree over a guest speaker at her community center; Luca worries he's not physically ready to return to the field and Commander Hicks reconnects with his estranged son.(5/10) I watched this 100% because Shane Madej and Ryan Bergara had a cameo, and can confidently say despite how small the cameo they were the best part. I would give it a lower score but I think it's unfair to do that without the context of the other episodes.
- CreatorTimothy GreenbergStarsPaul RuddAisling BeaAli Akbar SepahiAn existential comedy about a man struggling in life who undergoes a new treatment to become a better person, only to find that he's been replaced by a new and improved version of himself.(6.5/10)
- StarsMinami ShinodaEri SuzukiShinsuke SugawaraYoung witch Makoto moves to the beautiful countryside to live with her distant relatives and study witchcraft.(9/10) just an incredibly heartwarming, kind, and relaxing tv show. Really recommend if you’re ok with only one season, which kind of is disappointing.
- CreatorVictor FrescoStarsDrew BarrymoreTimothy OlyphantLiv HewsonSheila and Joel are married real estate agents who live and work in Santa Clarita, California. When Sheila dies, their lives take a dark turn.(8.5/10) a really fun show overall. I love the zesty violence and quirky fantasy elements
- DirectorYorgos LanthimosStarsColin FarrellRachel WeiszJessica BardenIn a dystopian near future, according to the laws of The City, single people are taken to The Hotel, where they are obliged to find a romantic partner in 45 days or they're transformed into beasts and sent off into The Woods.(7.2/10)
- DirectorNicolas RoegStarsDavid BowieRip TornCandy ClarkAn alien must pose as a human to save his dying planet, but a woman and greed of other men create complications.(7/10) I know I have a lot to say about this movie but I’ll have to feel it out. I just loved the character of Johnny and I liked Mary Lou as well. I have a headache and found a lot of this movie clunky but it really had some great stuff. I almost feel like watching it again.
- DirectorMasaaki YuasaStarsKanon TaniShôta ShimodaMinako KotobukiThe story centers on Kai, a gloomy middle school student whose life changes after meeting Lu, a mermaid.(8.5/10) Kind of weird but very cute and charming. The reviews are absolutely underselling it. Although it has the boy-falls-for-mermaid element that Ponyo does the worldbuilding, and characters are definitely their own thing. It’s very unique and if you see it as contrived you’re not paying attention.
- CreatorI.A. RupiStarsShiina NatsukawaAri OzawaInori MinaseA party of adventures attempt to defeat a demon lord. They fail, accidentally sending her back in time. The demon lord decides to go to the adventurer school where these four girls trained, and become their teacher.(9/10) a funny and cute lighthearted anime series! And that’s enough!
- DirectorShunji IwaiStarsYû AoiAnne SuzukiShôko AidaAlice transfers to a new school, where students believe that one student per school year is cursed, whom they call Judas Iscariot. Alice is deemed the new Judas, but what happened to the former Judas?(9/10) This is a really amazing movie. It is an intriguing mystery, sentimental, coming-of-age, and even a little bit slice of life at times. The animation style is a bit strange, but it is utilized very well with very creative decisions to make the best of it,
- DirectorHiroyuki OkiuraStarsKaren MiyamaYukaDaizaburo Arakawa11-year-old Momo moves with her mother to a small island town after her father dies. When she arrives, she encounters three goblins that others cannot see who try to help her to cope with the loss of her father and the changes in her life.(6.5/10) The animation style is also kind of creepy in a way that is off putting and the emotionalism in it kind of fell flat. Honestly, I don’t think it is bad, it just didn’t resonate with me for whatever reason and didn’t add anything extra.
- DirectorYeon Sang-hoStarsGong YooJung Yu-miMa Dong-seokWhile a zombie virus breaks out in South Korea, passengers struggle to survive on the train from Seoul to Busan.(8/10) The most devastating Zombie movie I've ever seen. Good social themes. heart-pounding every moment. The intensity might be far too much but still incredible.
- DirectorAbbas KiarostamiStarsMohamad Ramezani PourCollection of 24 short four-and-a-half minute films inspired by still images, including paintings and photographs.(6/10) it was beautiful and very peaceful, interesting “narrative”, but I was more than a little bit bored and I had a few more problems with it, too. My rating could be skewed by the fact that it was a school assignment, but I’m not going to be dishonest about how I experienced the movie and I was very bored. I think that it would have been much more interesting if the imagery was more varied. For an anthology, there was not enough variety. The crows were repeated over and over and over again. It was very annoying. I think there was some fundamental truths and meanings in 24 frames that I appreciated, but I wish that more risks would have been taken. The repetition felt less intentional and more like an art student trying to finish a project the night before. This is even less impressive knowing that Kiarostami is a very successful film maker
- DirectorLen WisemanStarsKate BeckinsaleScott SpeedmanShane BrollySelene, a vampire warrior, is entrenched in a conflict between vampires and werewolves, while falling in love with Michael, a human who is sought by werewolves for unknown reasons.(6.6/10) Finally watched it. Been wanting to since high school. This was kind of a mess, but the story wasn’t bad and a lot of it was pretty. Didn’t like the lycan transformations. Wish there was more variety. I did find it interesting. It’s not as good as Blade, but our protagonist is pretty which adds another layer of interest
- DirectorAbe ForsytheStarsLupita Nyong'oAlexander EnglandJosh GadA washed-up musician teams up with a teacher and a kids'-show personality to protect young children from a sudden outbreak of zombies.(6.6/10) I have really a mixed opinion of this movie but I really liked the charm and the premise. I would have done many things differently. It’s a very uneven movie. But it does have some good qualities.
- DirectorEthan CoenJoel CoenStarsJosh BrolinGeorge ClooneyAlden EhrenreichA Hollywood fixer in the 1950s works to keep the studio's stars in line.(9/10) Really funny and ideologically interesting and just good. I really loved all of the characters and almost wished I saw more of them. The bad ratings are weird to me. While I agree that it shouldn’t have been advertised so heavily as “manic”, “wild”, and “crazy” (it was not fast-paced but it also wasn’t very slow-burn) I do think it was really hilarious and silly and intriguing all the way through. Also, it was not satire. This was something else audiences may have anticipated, but it is an earnest movie, not a satirical one
- DirectorGina Prince-BythewoodStarsCharlize TheronKiKi LayneMatthias SchoenaertsA covert team of immortal mercenaries is suddenly exposed and must now fight to keep their identity a secret just as an unexpected new member is discovered.(9/10) pretty much exactly what I want out of an action movie. Terribly gory, high stakes, badass women, cool aesthetics, and great characters. And plus it’s gay and tender which made me cry tears of joy. I will be disappointed if it gets no sequel.
- CreatorKirsten BeyerMichael ChabonAkiva GoldsmanStarsPatrick StewartMichelle HurdJeri RyanFollow-up series to Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) and Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) that centers on Jean-Luc Picard in the next chapter of his life.(8.75/10) Picard is a beautiful and compelling piece of art. It is amazing to see an adventure series about a 93 year old man living his life on his terms, and dealing with the mistakes he made in the past with principle and grace.
- CreatorJoseph MallozziR.T. ThorneStarsRobyn AlomarAkiel JulienRobbie G.K.Set in the future, twenty-four teenagers are chosen from the last living colony, to take part of a competition known as The Exemplar. That's the chance to write their names into history.(8.5/10) a very conceptually interesting and exciting show! it has clearly been rated by people who have never given it half a chance.
- StarsDede LovelaceKabrina AdamsNina MoranA diverse group of young women navigating their lives through the predominantly male oriented world of skateboarding.(8.5/10) Betty is a very cute and empowering series about sisterhood with style. Even better than it sounds.
- DirectorRyan TrecartinStarsJillian AlexanderKupono AweauJeff BaijThe film focuses on the life of Jenny who has, according to many of the other characters, become too "left-of-center" while pursuing her interests.(9/10) this was honestly masterful! I had to watch it for a school project, and was skeptical because my teacher has recommended so inane art stuff in the past, but this was really interesting and disorienting in an amazing way.
