There is another girl aboard, a former sweetheart of Mallory's. With this cargo in charge of a worthy porter, they start. The happenings en route are screamingly funny. Marjorie, not married to Mallory, has her reputation at stake. Dr. Temple knows this, but won't let anyone know that he's a preacher of the gospel. Wellington and his wife fail to meet because he's too busy pestering the men folks and she puffing cigars. Then the other girl pesters Marjorie and Mallory with a bracelet she received from Mallory, and so everyone does something that had been better left undone, and the porter must bear the brunt of it all. A hold-up relieves the girl of the bracelet and the arrival of the Mormon minister when they get to Utah frightens Temple into practicing his profession of the young couple. Then a cinder in Wellington's eye causes him to meet his wife who relieves him of it, and they patch up their differences. With everything running smoothly, we leave them to continue their journeys.

Gorman, a pal of Keefe's, is the only person who knows the truth. Keefe goes east and claims the stables, but Matt Donovan, the trainer, suspects foul play. Keefe changes his name to Buffy and becomes infatuated with Henrietta. John Garrison also goes east and sees Henrietta and thinks he recognizes in her a striking resemblance to the picture found in the watch of the dead man. Keefe and Garrison meet at the home of Henrietta. Keefe denied his identity, but Garrison incidentally shows him the curious cigarette holder and Keefe betrays himself. Garrison sends west for the watch and the missing sheet of the bill of sale. He starts with the watch for the home of Henrietta but loses it en route. It is found by a street beggar and pawned. Henrietta happens to be passing the pawnshop and is attracted by an article in the window. She enters and finds her father's watch with her picture in it. She overhears Keefe tell Donovan that he bought the stable of her father and her suspicions are aroused. She shows Keefe the watch and picture and he again betrays himself and she is certain her father met with foul play. While playing tennis with Henrietta the missing sheet of the bill of sale falls from the pocket of Garrison and she finds it and the mystery deepens. Henrietta resolves to take no one into her confidence. She visits the office of Keefe, secretes herself outside the window, and overhears a conversation between Keefe and Gorman. They leave the office and she finds the complete bill of sale and compares it with the missing sheet. Ralph Woodhurst, the fiancé of Myrtle, has been induced by Keefe to bet large sums at his pool room. The day of the big handicap is approaching and Wildfire, the crack filly in the Keefe stable, is being backed to win. Keefe sends Donovan to rob Henrietta of the missing sheet, but she covers Gorman with a gun and the plan is frustrated. Henrietta, on the day of the big race, seeks out John Garrison, and accuses him of being in collusion with Keefe or Duffy. She shows Garrison her proofs, the watch and the missing sheet. Garrison tells her the truth. Keefe realizes that he must flee the country and he prepares for a final coup. He backs another horse to win, bribes Chappy Raster, the rider of Wildfire, to use the whip on the mare, which will cause her to sulk, if the flag on the racing stable is up when the horses start. Henrietta overhears the plot and goes to the office, where she has a terrific struggle with Keefe. She succeeds in pulling down the flag while fighting Keefe, Garrison coming to her assistance and dragging Keefe down the stairway, where a furious struggle ensues. The story closes with Henrietta on the roof, the flag down, in the arms of her lover, Wildfire having won the race.

Further complications lead to Charles' pleading proposal to Lucy and then finally to the truth, which leaves everyone satisfied.

The story is carried ahead about ten years when Harry is a captain in the army, showing him with his friend, Captain Durrance. They are both in love with the same girl, Ethne Eustace, and Harry and the girl after a time become engaged. Harry gives a dinner to his brother officers, Captain French, Lt. Willoughby and Captain Castleton, to announce his engagement. During the dinner Harry receives a telegram saying the regiment is ordered on regular service. Harry does not show his fellow officers the telegram as he should have done. They see him throw it into the fire. After they have gone, Harry determines to give up his commission, fearing that when put to the test he will be a coward. To preclude such a possibility he sends in his resignation. His fellow officers have, in the meantime, found out that they are ordered on active service, and next day they see that Harry Feversham has resigned his commission. They decide to send him three white feathers. While a ball is going on at Ethne's home a small package comes addressed to Captain Harry Feversham. He opens it in front of the girl and she asks him what he has done and he tells her. When she brands him as a coward, and striking a white feather from her fan, gives it to him. After this Harry Feversham's father will have nothing to do with him, and he consults his mother's old friend, Lieutenant Sutch, and announces to him that he is going to try and retrieve himself. He sails for Egypt in the hope of being able to do something and make the senders take back their feathers. After a long wandering at last he gets his chance and after many trials and tortures by the Arabs and a thrilling rescue he makes his fellow officers take back their feathers. In the meantime Durrance has been with his regiment in the Sudan and has been struck blind by the glare of the sun. Ethne, taking pity on him, has become engaged to him. Harry returns home to find that Ethne is engaged to another man. One day Durrance overhears them talking and decides for the sake of both of them to give up the girl, thus making Ethne and Harry both happy, and go back to the desert he loved so well.

As they are landing at the little port of Porto Banos, the consul of that place, who is also an instigator of revolutions, offers to let Travers take his credentials and pose as Dictator in his place, pretending to be afraid of the yellow fever, but really because he has learned of a new revolution, and is afraid of his life. Travers, fearing the law is already on his track, eagerly accepts the offer, and goes ashore as the new Dictator. Then things happen with marvelous celerity, and Travers becomes the center of a small cyclone of trouble, the chief factors of which are the opposing faction of the revolution, the wife of the consul, a vengeful former sweetheart of the latter, and a pretty young missionary, with whom Travers has fallen desperately in love. How he finally comes unscathed from his many perils, and wins his lady love, form an interesting denouement.

She dies in Bert's arms, and Madison resolves to toil for the welfare of workers and the end of child slavery.

For the sake of Armand's young sister, Cecile, Camille agrees to sacrifice herself and returns to her former life with Count de Varville. But Armand's love for Camille will not be suppressed. They meet again. He begs Camille to go away with him. She refuses. Armand accuses her of loving de Varville. The two men meet and quarrel. There is a duel, and Armand wounds de Varville. Armand learns that Camille always loved him and that her aim was to please the father by preserving Armand's family's good name. In the end Camille dies with a smile on her lips and expressing her love for Armand.

She points towards the child and goes to its bedside. Houston forgives his wife and instead of killing Hardy permits him to go unharmed.

That night, at a hotel in New York, a distinguished-looking foreigner, much resembling the man who seemed to rise up out of the sea, is shadowed by a fussy old gentleman resembling the fisherman of the coast scenes. The foreigner goes out and the fussy old gentleman goes to his room, where, after a short, sharp struggle with a valet, he searches through all drawers and papers. One paper he pockets with glee, and then departs. Elaine and Jameson are visited by the distinguished-looking foreigner who tells them he is a secret service agent from Washington, and begs to get information with regard to Kennedy and the lost torpedo. Elaine's dog, digging with its forepaws in a pot of palms, unearths the lost torpedo and carries it to the attic, where he drops it behind a trunk. The torpedo's propeller, however, has been left in the palm-pot. where Marcius Del Mar, the foreigner, finds it. Elaine is suspected by him of having concealed the torpedo. The fussy old gentleman, in Del Mar's tracks since he left his rooms, is an interested spectator. He is unaware that Del Mar has spies guarding the house, and is set upon by them. Rushing madly into the conservatory, he faces Del Mar. Both draw their guns, but the fussy old gentleman fires first. His gun is loaded with bullets containing an overpowering gas. Both Del Mar and Elaine fall suffocated to the floor. How the fussy old gentleman escapes is a fitting climax to this episode.

Getting wind of it, the malicious Osman hires a band of ruffians who make away with Bob Van Buren on the very eve of departure. With her young American mysteriously vanished, and the day of her now-all-the-more-odious wedding to Osman drawing near, Demetra can stand it no longer, and taking her duenna, flees to a cousin's in New York on the P. and O. boat on which Bob had reserved sailings. Osman pursues the little refugee, corners her in New York, and with oriental cunning sets a trap into which Demetra walks blindly. Having her in his toils again Osman summons a second Turkish priest and is just forcing Demetra to her knees before him when the door bursts open and in rushes Bob Van Buren, who had finally escaped the dungeon in Constantinople to which he had been consigned. He routes Osman and takes Demetra to his mother's. Mrs. Van Buren suggested that the lovers wait until September, but their hearts were set on June. And so, as you may very well imagine, June it was.

Admaston arranges to trap Peggy and Collingwood together at a country roadhouse, and begins divorce proceedings based on the resulting strong circumstantial evidence. Later, Lady Attwill convinces Admaston that Peggy's friendship with Collingwood was innocent and the couple is reunited.
