His father was the director of a bank. After graduating from high school, Hoffmann began studying art history and sculpture in Budapest. During the Nazi occupation of Hungary he was deported to Poland. From there he managed to escape and return to his homeland in an adventurous way before the end of the war in 1945. In 1949 he fled again, this time from Hungary to Israel. There he initially lived in a kibbutz, where he became familiar with the new language and developed his first literary activities, some of which already appeared in the daily press. Following the kibbutz experience, Kishon moved to Tel Aviv, where he continued writing and running a cabaret.
Kishon moved to Switzerland in the spring of 1981, where he lived for a short time in the canton of Appenzell and wrote his autobiography there. The writer's work consists primarily of satires that have been translated worldwide and have found an audience of millions in Germany since the beginning of the 1960s. His satirical plays "Der Blaumilchkanal" (1974) and "Es war die Lerche" (1977) were outstanding. Kishon also wrote the scripts for popular radio and television plays and occasionally directed them. In 1992, the German premiere of his comedy "Kein Wort zu Morgenstern" took place in St. Pölten under his direction. He also wrote and directed the comedy series "Sarah and Ephraim - Kishon's best family stories", which was shown on the private broadcaster Super-RTL in 1998. Kishon's other films included "Ervinka" and "Sleep Well, Sergeant".
There are also numerous film adaptations of the satirist's literary works. In political terms, Kishon repeatedly spoke out against anti-Israel campaigns and also against communism, which he took issue with in 1990 in "Ingratitude is the World's Wages". In 1997, his satirical novel "My Comb" conquered the international bestseller lists. After Kishon's second wife Sara Lipovitz died in 2002, he married the Austrian Lisa Witasek a year later for his third marriage. The writer had three children from his marriage to Sara. Kishon's literary life's work consisted of over 50 books that were translated into 37 languages. The worldwide circulation of his writings has already reached 43 million copies, with the German-language editions taking a top spot at 32 million.
The "Family Stories" are now considered the best-selling Hebrew book in the world - next to the Bible. Kishon was honored with numerous prizes such as the Order Against Animal Seriousness (1978), the Nobel Prize for Humor (1981) and the Karl Valentin Order (1984). In 1985 he received the Golden Camera. He went on to win three Golden Globes. A collection of political satires followed under the title Whoever believes it will be blessed (2000). In 2002, the State of Israel honored the writer with the Israel Prize, the country's highest honor, for his life's work. In the summer of 2004, on the occasion of Kishon's 80th birthday, the German publisher Langen Müller published the anniversary edition "All Novels", which includes Kishon's prose works.

Evgeny Afineevsky is an Oscar and Emmy-nominated director, whose current documentary, CRIES FROM SYRIA, was an Official Selection at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. Afineevsky won Best Director and earned nomination for Best Documentary from the Critics' Choice Documentary Awards. He and his film earned IPA Satellite Awards nominations for Best Documentary and Best Song in a Documentary for PRAYERS FOR THIS WORLD, performed by Cher. The Awards Circuit Community Awards nominated his movie as Best Documentary Feature for 2017. He won International Documentary Association's Courage Under Fire Award, earned a PGA Award nomination, won a Humanitas Prize and Cinema for Peace Awards as Most Valuable Documentary of the Year, won 32nd Fort Lauderdale Film Festival, Documentaries Without Borders Film Festival and 51st Houston WorldFest Film Festival, as well as the Overseas Press Club's Peter Jennings Award. Recently Afineevsky and his movie CRIES FROM SYRIA earned 4 Emmy nominations. In creating CRIES FROM SYRIA, Afineevsky spent months on the ground in Syria, using his cameras to craft a comprehensive account of the brutal five-year civil war. He edited hundreds of hours of footage from Syrian activists and citizen journalists, as well as testimony from child protestors, leaders of the revolution, human-rights defenders, ordinary citizens, and high-ranking army generals who defected to tell this important story. Afineevsky built his filmmaking career on providing a first-hand account of conflict, even if it means putting his own life in danger. He earned an Oscar and Emmy nomination in 2016 for WINTER ON FIRE: UKRAINE'S FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, which details the 2013 student uprising that transformed into a violent revolution. The film also looked at the shady negotiations between Ukraine's corrupt former president, Viktor Yanukovich, and Russian president Vladimir Putin that kept Ukraine from joining the European Union. Afineevsky's tenacity in his storytelling ultimately attracted the unwanted attention of Russian intelligence agents, who continue to track him and his work. WINTER ON FIRE was an Official Selection of the Venice and Telluride International film festivals. He won the People's Choice Award for the Best Documentary from the Toronto International Film Festival and received Television Academy Honors Award. His documentary work dates back to his life in Russia as a teenager, where he won First Prize for Best Documentary at the Black Sea International Film Festival. He's since continued to demonstrate a commitment documenting important stories of change, but he also has worked in a wide spectrum of genres. From 1994-2000, he produced more than 30 musicals in Israel, including BAT (DIE FLEDERMAUS), GYPSY BARON, VIENNESE BLOOD, NIGHT IN VENICE, SILVA PRINCESS OF CHARDAS, MOZART KONZERTE (with the Prague National Opera Orchestra), among many others. He also directed the Israeli TV series DAYS OF LOVE in 1999. His work in feature films include producing a modern-day adaptation of Dostoyevsky's classic novel CRIME AND PUNISHMENT (2002), which stars Crispin Glover, Vanessa Redgrave, John Hurt, and Margot Kidder; OPEN HEART (2002); AND DEATH GAME (2001), starring Billy Drago and Joe Lara. All three films went on to win accolades from the Houston WorldFest. He wrote and directed the 2009 family comedy starring Lainie Kazan, OY VEY! MY SON IS GAY!! (2009), for which he won more than 23 international film awards. He also wrote and directed DIVORCE: A JOURNEY THROUGH THE KIDS' EYES (2014), which provides an educational look at the different situations the children of divorced parents deal with. Afineevsky resides in Los Angeles and is a member of the The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the Directors Guild of America and Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television.- Writer

Menahem Golan was born Menahem Globus to parents of Polish decent in Tiberias, Israel, in May 1929. In his early years, he was a pilot for the fledgling Israeli Air Force, changing his surname to Golan for patriotic reasons in 1948. A few years later, he took the first step towards his future career by attending the Old Vic Theatre School in London. After returning to Israel, he produced for theater, until joining producer Roger Corman as an assistant on The Young Racers (1963). Golan's debut film in partnership with his younger cousin Yoram Globus was El Dorado (1963). The two cousins set up Noah Films to produce for the Israeli market. Golan's role was as producer and the creative partner, with Globus as the financial expert. The company was first recognized overseas when its production Sallah Shabati (1964) won an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and then won the Golden Globe in the same category in 1965. However, the cousins were desperate to break into the international market. Some of their films had been picked up for distribution in America, such as Kazablan (1973) by MGM, but this was not enough.
In 1979 the pair bought control of a failing production company, The Cannon Group Inc., from Dennis Friedland and Christopher C. Dewey, and it was this company that gave them international renown. Under their control, the Cannon Group grew from a small company making a few obscure pictures a year to a studio that produced 35 pictures in 1987 alone. They developed a large, independent, and international empire, with production, distribution, and exhibition interests across Europe. Golan and Globus hit their peak with Cannon in the mid-1980s, signing Sylvester Stallone for a record US$13 million in 1983 for Over the Top (1987) and purchasing the UK's Thorn-EMI Screen Entertainment in 1986. This last deal led to their ownership of the ABC cinema circuit and Elstree Studios in Britain. However, by 1987, the money was starting to run out. Many of their movies were not making enough at the box office despite the cousins' wide cinema ownership, and they had taken on a lot of debt during their rapid growth, making more expensive pictures in the process. They were initially rescued by Warner Bros., which took distribution rights to Cannon's better films--for example, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987), based on a character that Warner already owned--and also took an interest in some of its assets. The end of Cannon came in 1989 when, virtually bankrupt, the company was bought by the now-disgraced financier Giancarlo Parretti and renamed Pathé Communications (after the new MGM-Pathé collapsed in 1992, Globus produced pictures with Christopher Pearce, which were released under a resurrected Cannon Pictures label. The last of these was American Cyborg: Steel Warrior (1993) before the company folded for good).
Golan fell out with Parretti and Globus, leaving Pathé, and starting 21st Century Pictures. He produced a number of films that received widespread distribution, such as Death Wish: The Face of Death (1994) and Captain America (1990), but by the mid-1990s this company had folded, too. Golan's name was later linked with other new companies, such as International Dynamic Pictures and Magic Entertainment, and he rejoined cousin Yoram for both. However, the two soon fell out again and went their separate ways, with Golan writing and directing for other producers in the interim. Golan's latest company is New Cannon Inc., and his recent works include Crime and Punishment (2002) and Return from India (2002). Unfortunately for his fans, it now seems unlikely that Golan will recreate the success of his heyday. Menahem Golan has long been criticized (sometimes unfairly) for an emphasis on quantity rather than quality. It's true that some of the movies he has produced have been laughable or unwatchable. However, now out of the limelight of a critical industry, some of his company's once-derided films have achieved cult status, such as Mona Lisa (1986), Godfrey Reggio's Powaqqatsi (1988), and the "Lemon Popsicle" series. Golan's ongoing drive, energy, and past contribution to the world of cinema will undoubtedly and belatedly be recognized for the achievement this represents.- Producer

Yoram Globus is an Israeli film producer, cinema owner and distributor who is most famous for his association with Cannon Films Inc., a company he ran with his cousin Menahem Golan.
In 1978, Globus and Golan moved to Hollywood and purchased the film production company Cannon (The Cannon Group) for $500,000. By the mid-80s Cannon had produced an average of 40 films a year and had become the largest independent production company in the world with a net worth of over 1 billion dollars. Because of their fast, low-budget style of filmmaking, they earned the nickname "the Go-Go Boys." For years the name Golan-Globus symbolized Hollywood's last moguls and an inspiration corner stone to a new generation of film makers. In addition Golan and Globus opened the foreign market of the world film industry to the United States. Among the films produced by them are Bloodsport (1988) with Jean-Claude Van Damme, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987) with Christopher Reeve, King Lear (1987) directed by Jean-Luc Godard, Runaway Train (1985), Over the Top (1987) with Sylvester Stallone and Street Smart (1987) with Morgan Freeman. In addition, they acquired the rights to properties like "Spider-Man", Captain America (1990) and more.
With Cannon's success Golan and Globus expanded the group's operations and entered into additional areas. Cannon acquired approximately 1,600 cinemas in Europe and the United States (some of which were acquired in later years by Silvio Berlusconi, who later became prime minister of Italy) Studios, a, film library and additional acquisitions expanded the activities of the Cannon and established it as a leading conglomerate in the world film industry. During these years, Cannon sold their movies by a new strategy invented by Globus, the pre-sale strategy. Substantial pre-sales of the next years' films were made based on the strong salesmanship skills of Globus, and the advertising created by Design Projects. The deposits made from these sales financed production of the first film in the production line-up, which-when completed and delivered to theatre owners around the world-generated enough money to make the next film in the line-up. For this purposes Cannon used to create posters of movies, before they even had a script, and large billboards prominently displayed at the Cannes Film Festival each year.
In 1986, Cannon Films bought Thorn EMI Screen Entertainment (see EMI Films) and the film library for £175,000,000, and Cannon sold its British Film Library Thorn-EMI Screen Entertainment Library which consisted of some 2,000 British films to Weintraub Entertainment Group in for approximately $85,000,000.
In 1989, 39.4% of the shares were acquired by the group Pathé Communications, a holding company controlled by Italian businessman Giancarlo Parretti in the amount of about $250 million. At the same year, Golan, citing differences with both Parretti and Globus, resigned from his position and left Cannon to start 21st Century Film Corporation, while Globus remained with Pathé. Globus and Paretti took over in 1990 through Pathé Communications for the American film company MGM and Yoram Globus became president of MGM.
In 1993, after he produced almost 300 films, Globus returned to Israel and has since focused on Israeli film and television production. His company GG Studios owns a large film and television studio in Neve Ilan, Israel where various Israeli broadcast stations, such as the Israeli News Company. Among its holdings of Israel Yoram Globus, of the Globus Group that includes a private arm Globus that owns the largest TV and film studio (Neveh Ilan) and is responsible for a significant part of film distribution industry (Noah CPP). In addition, Globus holds a public arm Globus Max that owns theaters in Israel. In 1999, Yoram Globus won other Ophir Award for Lifetime Achievement by the Israeli Academy of Film and Television.
In 2014 there were two documentary films released about the story of Golan & Globus in Cannon Films. Ratpac Entertainment released Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films (2014) and The Go-Go Boys: The Inside Story of Cannon Films (2014), which was launched at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.- Director

Born in Haifa in 1950, as the second son of architect Munio Weinraub and former Sionist activist Efratia Margalit. On the year of his birth, his parents changed the family name to "Gitai", which is the Hebrew translation of the German name "Weinraub". While he was a student in architecture, Amos Gitai joined the Yom Kippur war in 1973 as a reserve duty officer, and served as part of a helicopter rescue team. While serving during the war, he started filming with a 8mm camera his mother gave him as his birthday present. On his 23rd birthday, October 11th 1973, his helicopter was shot down by a Syrian missile. Among the 7 crews on board, 6 of them survived, including Gitai himself, who was inspired by this traumatic experience to quit architecture and move to filmmaking. He made a documentary on this incident and his fellow survivors, "Kippur: War Memories" in 1993, then a fictional recreation of it "Kippur" in 2000.
in 1979, Gitai directed his first feature-length documentary "House", commissioned by Israel's public television. The television rejected the film, and the film (originally shot in 16mm) only exists today copied from a VHS tape he managed to secure. The tape traveled on few international festivals and quickly earned a reputation for him. His third documentary, "Field Diary" shot in 1983 was also rejected by the Israeli Television who originally commissioned it. This time, Gitai moved to France with the negative of the film and completed it in France. For the next 10 years, he based himself in Europe.
1n 1986, he directed his first feature fictional film "Esther", based on the Biblical story of the book of Esther.
In 1993, following prime minister Ytzhak Rabin starting the peace process with Palestine, Gitai and his family moved back to live in his native town of Haifa.- Director

Avi Nesher's award-winning films have played a major part in Israeli cinema's rise to prominence during the last decade. During that period, remarkably enough, four Israeli movies were nominated for Best Foreign Picture. During that era, Nesher was singled out and honored several times as one of Israel's all-time greatest filmmakers.
In 2018 Avi Nesher won a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Israeli Ministry of Culture and Sports.
Also in 2018 Nesher released The Other Story. The film premiered at the 2018 Toronto Film Festival "The Other Story", which is based on a true story and was written by Nesher and his co-writer and known psychologist Noam Shpancer, was the most viewed Israeli film of 2018 and granted Nesher the Best Director Award from The Israeli Film Critic Association.
In 2016, Nesher wrote, directed and produced the post-war family drama "Past Life", which is set in Israel's revolutionary year of 1977 and is based on true events (inspired by Dr. Baruch Milch's autobiography "Can Heaven Be Void?")."Past Life" was an official selection at Toronto International Film Festival 16' ("Profoundly moving, suspenseful, gripping character-driven drama with hauntingly beautiful music" - Variety), and also the closing night at the Haifa International Film Festival ("An explosion of sheer emotional and cinematic virtuosity" - Cinemascope). In its long theatrical run in Israel, "Past Life" was a resounding success, receiving excellent reviews and close to 200,000 spectators. It was nominated for 5 Ophir Awards (the Israeli Oscars) including Best Actress and Original Score. Internationally the film was bought and distributed by the Samuel Goldwyn Company and by MGM/Orion.
In 2013, Nesher's film The Wonders was praised by film critic Yair Raveh (Cinemascope) who called it the best Israeli movie of the year. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was selected as one of five exceptional films featured in the Contemporary World Speakers program. Variety film critic Alissa Simon hailed it a "smart, stylish, and sophisticated dramedy."
In 2008, Nesher received the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Jerusalem Film Festival. In 2009, he received the Cinematic Excellence Award at the Haifa Film Festival and a star on the Avenue of the Stars, an honor rarely bestowed on directors. In 2010 Nesher received the prestigious Landau Award for Excellence in the Arts.
That year, Nesher's "The Matchmaker", which premiered as an official selection at the Toronto Film Festival and later on that year won the Silver Plaque at the Chicago International Film Festival. "The Matchmaker" was nominated for nine Israeli Academy Awards (including Best Picture) and won three, including Best Actor and Best Actress. It will open in U.S. theaters later this fall.
In 2007, Nesher's "The Secrets" also premiered as an official selection at the Toronto Film Festival. It was hailed by the Hollywood Reporter as "...witty and wise, sensual and emotionally overpowering - one of the best Israeli movies in recent years". Legendary movie critic Andrew Sarris declared "The Matchmaker" "One of the most remarkable movies of the year". It was nominated for seven Israeli Academy Awards, and won two.
In 2005, Nesher directed the highly experimental political documentary "Oriental", which won the Spirit of Freedom Award at the Jerusalem Film Festival. "Brilliant and original" raved the Jerusalem Post. "Avi Nesher is clearly Israel's most innovative filmmaker".
In 2004, Nesher wrote and directed "Turn Left at the End of the World", -- a surreal deconstruction of Israel's immigration mythology. "Turn Left" became Israel's biggest box office success, as well as becoming one of the best-reviewed films of the era. It was nominated for eight Israeli Academy Awards and won three.
Nesher's earlier credits also include many films of note. His very first film, "The Troupe" was a controversial hit that shocked the Israeli establishment by ridiculing the IDF; it has gone on to become an Israeli cult classic and most recently was adapted as a very successful stage play by the Israeli National Theater.
Following his auspicious debut, Nesher wrote and directed "Rage and Glory", which tells the controversial story of a Jewish terror organization during the 1940s. "Rage and Glory" caused a political storm, was lauded by international critics, and in 2001 was selected by the Lincoln Center Film Society as one of the most important films in 50 years of Israeli cinema.
After seeing "Rage and Glory", producer Dino De Laurentis convinced Nesher to come to Hollywood. Consequently, Nesher wrote and directed the sci-fi mystery "Timebomb" for MGM (produced by Rafaella De Laurentiis) and the sensual, supernatural mystery "Doppelganger" for 20th Century Fox, starring Drew Barrymore, both of which won prizes at the Avoriaz Science Fiction and Fantasy Festival.
Nesher's American success allowed him to produce, write, and direct the independent feature "The Taxman" which opened to extraordinary reviews: The New York Times called it "A delight...a charmer of a mystery" and Jeffrey Lyons of NBC hailed it as "A cinematic gem...not to be missed!"- Producer

Born in Beershaba in 1964, Ronit was an awkward child who felt she was different from others, but when she became an actress (more or less by chance at the age of 26) with a star role in Daniel Wachsmann's 'Hameyu'ad' ['The Appointed (1990)'], this complex became an asset. This beautiful brunette realized she could relate to the rest of the world by expressing her inner emotions. Since then she has made few films, but many of major importance such as Late Marriage (2001) (by Dover Koshashvili), Alila (2003) (by Amos Gitai and Or (My Treasure) (2004) (by Keren Yedaya), in which she embodies wives, prostitutes or dope fiends marked by life. She has even co-scripted and co-directed the excellent 'Ve'lakahta Lekha Isha' ['To Take a Wife (2004)'] with her brother Schlomi. Both are preparing the second part due to be filmed in 2008, 'Seven Days' [Shiva (2008)]. She was wonderful in the recent The Band's Visit (2007) ('The Band's Visit') as a kind-hearted lonely heart refusing to wilt in her desert town.- Producer
