- CreatorMatthew WeinerStarsJon HammElisabeth MossVincent KartheiserA drama about one of New York's most prestigious ad agencies at the beginning of the 1960s, focusing on one of the firm's most mysterious but extremely talented ad executives, Donald Draper.Mad Men Season 7B: 9/10
There's a bumpy start with a solid opener and probably my least favourite episode of the show following. But it's clear a show is a classic when an 8/10 and 7/10 opening to a season is a bumpy start.
It is pretty much perfect from that point and there isn't really a wasted scene for 5 episodes straight. I'm not sure which half of season 7 I prefer but there are times where its entirety is my favourite Mad Men season in my head, but those are generally times I've forgotten seasons 4 and 5 exist. - CreatorJack AmielMichael BeglerStarsClive OwenAndré HollandJeremy BobbA look at the professional and personal lives of the staff at New York's Knickerbocker Hospital during the early part of the twentieth century. The Knick Season 2: 9/10
I do wish this could've been a couple of seasons as to flesh some of the finer details out, not every reveal or character arc gets its due and I wish we had some more time with Thackery as a character.
That being said, it's still phenomenal TV, there isn't really a false note and the show as a whole does more with its "first" 20 episodes than almost any other show I've seen. I hope that spin off with Algie does end up happening because there's still so much more potential for stories set during this time period in this style.
I'm not sure which I prefer of season 1 and season 2, season 2 was perhaps a bit more consistent but season 1 has the high of Get The Rope that this season never quite gets to. - CreatorRobert LevineJonathan E. SteinbergStarsJessica Parker KennedyToby StephensHannah NewFollows Captain Flint and his pirates twenty years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel "Treasure Island."Black Sails Season 2: 9/10
I had a pretty solid time with season 1 but it's crazy how instantly this jumped in quality. From the very first episode it was clear that the creative team just completely understood what they wanted to achieve with this show when at times it felt aimless in season 1.
It's always so satisfying to see a show grow into itself and it's funny that 2015 had 2 seasons like this. - CreatorVince GilliganPeter GouldStarsBob OdenkirkRhea SeehornJonathan BanksThe trials and tribulations of criminal lawyer Jimmy McGill in the years leading up to his fateful run-in with Walter White and Jesse Pinkman.Better Call Saul Season 1: 9/10
I think this is easily the most underrated BB Universe season. There's nothing about either of these shows that is underrated at this point but I don't think this season gets enough credit for how phenomenal it is from pretty much the very first scene.
The writing team was at full confidence after finishing what is probably the most iconic American show ever made and there wasn't even a second of growing pains. - CreatorGraham YostStarsTimothy OlyphantNick SearcyJoelle CarterEnforcing his own brand of justice, U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, a strong-willed, quiet law-man haunted by his past, returns to his native town to see that justice is served to those in need.Justified Season 6: 9/10
An almost pitch perfect wrapup to one of my favourite shows. I do think this season suffers a little from perhaps being 1-2 episodes too long. It doesn't necessarily carry the fairly specific tone it was going for for the entire 13 episode runtime but there really isn't anything more than a minor pacing complaint with this season.
It's not my favourite of the show but it does everything it needs to, and the finale is almost perfect. - CreatorJonathan NolanStarsJim CaviezelTaraji P. HensonKevin ChapmanAn ex-CIA agent and a wealthy programmer save lives via a surveillance AI that sends them the identities of civilians involved in impending crimes. However, the details of the crimes, including the civilians' roles, are left a mystery.Person of Interest Season 4B: 9/10
This is probably the least consistent period of POI, it has probably the worst 3 episode run of the final 3 seasons, but also has a couple of the best 3 episode runs.
In a genuine procedural it's a little easier to separate those slightly worse episodes from an overall rating of a season, especially if they are so few and far between. The problem here is that those episodes are all in a row, so it feels like the momentum of what was a phenomenal season up to that point is really stifled, even if on a rewatch you can probably skip a couple.
But this half season has Asylum/YHWH, Terra Incognita, Control-Alt-Delete, and let's be real here, none of that matters.
This was the year POI aired motherfuckin If-Then-Else. - CreatorAaron KorshStarsGabriel MachtPatrick J. AdamsMeghan MarkleOn the run from a drug deal gone bad, brilliant college dropout Mike Ross finds himself working with Harvey Specter, one of New York City's best lawyers.Suits Season 5: 8.5/10
This probably doesn't necessarily deserve a spot higher than the 3 seasons directly below it, but there's something that always pulls me back to this specific story. I do think the first portion of this season doesn't necessarily fully work, from memory, the conflicts can feel a little contrived at times.
But the (albeit slightly overused) storytelling device of Harvey's therapy sessions works really well, and the culmination of the takeover plot, that leads into my favourite arc in the show (Mike's court case) is exciting, and that arc resolves in a way that makes for a genuinely perfect series finale. Crazy how the show totally didn't continue after this :). - CreatorChristopher CantwellChristopher C. RogersStarsLee PaceScoot McNairyMackenzie DavisFollows some players in the 80s technological revolution that lead to information society.Halt and Catch Fire Season 2: 8.5/10
There are so many things about the story of this season that could feel so frustrating and soapy in the wrong hands but this writing team always makes it work.
I think the characters feeling so well realised really makes any "misunderstanding conflict" that could feel so trite, feel genuine. It's also just so cool to see the writers room really figure out what they wanted this show to be, and despite it not quite living up to its full potential here, the signs were there.
The only real flaw is that certain characters very much feel like 1 season characters so there's a certain sense you are waiting for them to disappear so the "real plot" can start, despite those characters genuinely working for the story. It can cause the second half of this season to feel like it drags on a touch, but that's fully forgiven after the final 2 episodes. - CreatorSam EsmailStarsRami MalekChristian SlaterCarly ChaikinElliot, a brilliant but unstable cyber-security engineer and vigilante hacker, becomes a key figure in a complex game of global chaos when he and his shadowy allies try to take down the corrupt corporation his company is paid to protect.Mr Robot Season 1: 8.5/10
There's a few bumps along the way but what this season sells you on immediately is the tone. I can't quite think of another show that feels like Mr Robot does while you are watching it.
Obviously it wears its style and (especially) story inspirations on its sleeve, and the story isn't something especially unique, but its presentation and general atmosphere is something I can't quite think of another high budget show having.
There are some genuine standout episodes here as well and even the weirder episodes that could be considered missteps are still interesting enough to be watchable. Can't wait to watch more of this. - CreatorDrew GoddardStarsCharlie CoxVincent D'OnofrioDeborah Ann WollA blind lawyer by day, vigilante by night. Matt Murdock fights the crime of New York as Daredevil.Daredevil Season 1: 8.5/10
I think this season falls away a touch towards the very end but there's a palpable sense of tension and momentum to this season that I didn't necessarily give it credit for on a first watch.
Also, the first 2 episodes are phenomenal and close to the best thing Marvel Studios has ever done, and this season never quite loses touch with what made those episodes great, even if it doesn't quite stick the landing as well as it could've.
Probably the biggest surprise from Marvel Studios outside of Iron Man and possibly the best tone of anything they've made. - CreatorDavid SchicklerJonathan TropperStarsAntony StarrIvana MilicevicUlrich ThomsenAn ex-con assumes the identity of a murdered sheriff in the small town of Banshee, Pennsylvania, where he has some unfinished business.Banshee Season 3: 8/10
High end pulp tv, definitely the high point of the show up to this point. - CreatorMelissa RosenbergStarsKrysten RitterRachael TaylorEka DarvilleFollowing the tragic end of her brief superhero career, Jessica Jones tries to rebuild her life as a private investigator, dealing with cases involving people with remarkable abilities in New York City.Jessica Jones Season 1: 8/10
I think I'd probably need to rewatch this to give a more accurate description but what I can remember most about it is its atmosphere and tone. Something that these first two Netflix Marvel shows/seasons nailed and they never quite recaptured was the perfect tone/atmosphere for the specific character of each show.
David Tenant's character is perhaps a bit overused and I'd love to see more of a procedural element to this show using Jessica Jones as a PI, with the constant tension of when Kilgrave would show up moving the show forward, but it still really works for the most part. - CreatorEric Ellis OvermyerStarsTitus WelliverJamie HectorAmy AquinoAn L.A.P.D. homicide detective works to solve the murder of a 13-year-old boy while standing trial in federal court for the murder of a serial killer.Bosch Season 2: 8/10
A genuine upgrade on season 1 in pretty much every way. The main story is more complex without diluting the show's strengths, the central antagonist/mystery is far more engaging and the dynamics between the characters just work on a level that they didn't necessarily work on in season 1.
There's even an interesting emotional resolution for Bosch as a character in the finale that worked in a way I wasn't expecting it to. - CreatorDan HarmonStarsJoel McHaleDanny PudiDonald GloverA suspended lawyer is forced to enroll in a community college with an eccentric staff and student body.Community Season 6: 7/10
It's a shame this show largely went out with a bit of a whimper as far as this final season is concerned but the season does end on a high note.
Keith David is the most welcome addition. - CreatorDavid BenioffD.B. WeissStarsEmilia ClarkePeter DinklageKit HaringtonNine noble families fight for control over the lands of Westeros, while an ancient enemy returns after being dormant for millennia.Game of Thrones Season 5: 6.5/10
This shit kinda sucks except for when it occasionally doesn't and is randomly the best bit of spectacle filmmaking of 2015. If the entirety of this season was just the final 25 minutes of Hardhome it'd be pretty good. - CreatorGreg BerlantiGeoff JohnsAndrew KreisbergStarsGrant GustinCandice PattonDanielle PanabakerAfter being struck by lightning, Barry Allen wakes up from his coma to discover he's been given the power of super speed, becoming the Flash, and fighting crime in Central City. The Flash Season 1B/2A: 6.5/10
I kinda despise almost everything after season 1 but that back half of season 1 is genuinely fun, the best part of any CW DC show outside of Arrow Season 2. It's carrying this rating. - CreatorDan GoorMichael SchurStarsAndy SambergStephanie BeatrizTerry CrewsComedy series following the exploits of Det. Jake Peralta and his diverse, lovable colleagues as they police the NYPD's 99th Precinct.Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 2B/3A: 4.5/10
Look, rating these B99 seasons is kinda hard for me because there biggest problem is how forgettable they are. I remember slightly enjoying the show for a small time and it then just lost its charm.
I never hated it but it just leaves no impression on me whatsoever, and I find it impossible to rewatch any scene outside of "I Want it That Way". - CreatorGreg BerlantiMarc GuggenheimAndrew KreisbergStarsStephen AmellKatie CassidyDavid RamseySpoiled billionaire playboy Oliver Queen is missing and presumed dead when his yacht is lost at sea. He returns five years later a changed man, determined to clean up the city as a hooded vigilante armed with a bow.Arrow Season 3B/4A: 4/10
Somehow not as bad as this show was going to get. 4B is probably the worst half season of TV I've ever watched in full. This also sucks, season 3 was never particularly good but it quite literally falls off a cliff after episode 9. The second half of season 3 is still not the worst thing ever, it's just incredibly bland.
