*A true silent film - forgoes even a soundtrack.
*The cuts are obtrusive. I couldn't put my finger on why, so I went frame by frame and I think it's because you can briefly see where the film was spliced together.
+I like the focus on shadows - stark in black and white.
+Interesting use of wandering POV shots.
+This short's approach to filming the human form is unique. The body is repeatedly fragmented through extreme closeups and closeups which focus on parts such as hands, eyes, and legs.
+The person in the black robe with the mirror face is creepy.
+Lots of canted angles to disorient the viewer as the protagonist stumbles around the windy California house.
+I was not expecting astral projection - love it! The black robed mirror person is evocative of sleep paralysis demons or the DPH hatman.
+Eerie use of jump cuts to play with our sense of time.
+How did they pull off the doubling effect? If they spliced two sets of film horizontally, they did a great job because I can't see a split.
+The spherical glasses are bizarre.
+A brutal end.
+I'm sure a lot of symbolism went over my head (What was the significance of the flower? Mirrors fit in with the doubling motif, but I'm unsure of what it is meant to convey?). However, I loved the nightmarish imagery and unique choice to depict daytime dreams.
*A precursor to works like Possibly in Michigan (1983) and This House Has People in It (2016).
