Directors born in Zambia and willing to bear witness on this country are something of a rarity. This is nonetheless the case of Rungano Nyoni, a young woman whose native town is Lusaka although she did not stay there long. She was indeed still a little girl when she emigrated to Great Britain with her parents. It is in Wales that Rongano actually grew up and from Birmingham University that she graduated... only to study drama at the London University of Arts. But an actress she was not destined to be (she played in only three films), as she proved thereafter. More interested in directing and writing (doesn't Rungano mean 'story-telling'), she turned to film making from 2009 on. The five shorts that bear her signature were selected in many festivals throughout the world and were multi-awarded. Two of them were filmed in her native Zambia, which is also the setting of her excellent first feature "I Am Not a Witch" (2017), where she narrates, in a half-quizzical half-poetic tone, the misadventures of a nine-year girl arbitrarily accused of being a witch. An internationally acclaimed work that reveals Nyoni's talent to a wide audience while at the same time bringing little known Zambia to the fore.- Philip North is known for The Sarah Jane Adventures (2007), Bikini-Blitzkrieg, Part One: Dance Domination (2006) and Spring Heeled Jack (2008).

He joined the Leicester Dramatic Society and ultimately applied for and won a place at RADA. On leaving the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, he worked in repertory and pantomimes, including "Toad of Toad Hall," in which he met his future wife. His first work in television was as a walk-on in a BBC play, "The Wedding Feast." "The Spanish Farm" (1968), "Dad's Army" and numerous situation comedies followed. He played the original Bungle the bear in the children's series "Rainbow" (1972), set questions for "Mastermind" and did a lot of freelance voice work for the BBC. The part of K-9's voice came his way after he bumped into the director, with whom he had worked previously, in a pub. Since his time in "Doctor Who," Leeson has continued to act and provide voiceover services for the BBC and many other companies. In 1995 he appeared in the "Doctor Who" spin-off video drama "Downtime," playing a disc jockey.- Actor

- The name may not be familiar but the face surely would be. Ronan Vibert will be remembered as an incisive character actor who was noted for his television appearances on both sides of the Atlantic. The son of artists David Vibert and his wife Dilys (née Jackson), he was born in Cambridgeshire, but lived in Penarth, South Wales, until the age of 18. He was at one time the lead singer in a band. Graduating from RADA in 1985, Vibert moved to London where he made his theatrical debut that year. His appearances on the stage included The Snow Queen, Peer Gynt, Uncle Vanya and War and Peace, with various stints at the Manchester Royal Exchange, the Bristol Old Vic and the National Theatre.
Strong facial features and an excellent speaking voice enabled this thespian to specialise in intense, dramatic roles, somewhat reminiscent of the late great Alan Rickman. Vibert was chillingly convincing at portraying snarling, malevolent upper crust villains: the demon Mephistopheles in Hex (2004), the boorish misogynist Giovanni Sforza in The Borgias (2011), the vicious landlord Sir Geoffrey Hawkes in Penny Dreadful (2014). His perpetual mean streak often resulted in his character receiving an appropriate comeuppance by the end. Vibert said in an interview "I always like to do projects that are different from the one before. Going from Renaissance Italy to 19th century West Virginia, within a few days, was a wild one". The latter referred to his role as Perry Cline, a secondary antagonist with a penchant for underage girls, in Hatfields & McCoys (2012).
Thus very much at home in period settings, Vibert essayed a rich gallery of colourful characters, from the timid mother's boy Wilmot (Jeeves and Wooster (1990)) to the 'Iron Duke' Lord Wellington (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (2015)), from Simion the Wise (Dracula Untold (2014)) to the ill-fated politician Ritter Longbane (Carnival Row (2019)). After residing in London for most of his life, Vibert latterly relocated to Florida where he passed away 'after a brief illness' at the age of 58 on December 22 2022. - Clare Thomas was born on 2 April 1989 in Buckinghamshire, England, UK. While he was at school he had ambitions of being a pop star drummer. While he was good at his school lessons he failed his 'O' levels resulting in his father locking his drums away and telling him he would only get them back if he passed his exams when he re sat them. Fortunately for Russ his mother had a spare key to the lock. Inspired by the Beatles and swept along by the Merseybeat era he formed the group The Black Abbots in his home town of Chester where they soon became a big name. Being on a raised platform behind his drums he had a good view of the girls which is where he spotted the one that would become his wife. It was fortunate that after the show she went round to the stage door for autographs. Once established the group got a recording contract but when they broke up in 1980 Russ formed a new group 'The New Black Abbotts' then later launched himself as a solo comedian to great success being voted 3 years running as 'The Funniest Man on Television' by the readers of TV Times. Georgie was born in Helensburgh, Argyll and Bute, on April 20th 1956 and as a child had little interest in appearing in school plays. In fact she studied graphic design at Glasgow School of Art and moved to London in her mid-twenties to design book covers for the Thames and Hudson publishing house. Looking for other interests she joined Floodlight Council, an organization set up to bring out adult's artistic skills and then became part of the Questors Theatre Company in Ealing, West London. Here she met the late Alan Rickman - who, like Georgie, had a background in design before treading the boards - and he encouraged her to follow her acting ambitions. As a result she enrolled at the Bristol Old Vic drama school alongside Mark Strong and Jeremy Northam and on graduating had her first job at the Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich. Even then she felt, somewhat modestly, that she did not have the looks for a leading lady but ever since her television debut in 1988 she has been a reliable supporting player in virtually every type of show from sketch comedy to period drama, notably as doughty Sergeant Nokes in Heartbeat (1992), and as the liberal, kindly teacher Audrey in Waterloo Road (2006) which was filmed in her native Scotland. Indeed she may be said to be one of the first ladies of character acting and though her film roles have again always been in support of bigger names she has proved herself to be a scene-stealer par excellence, as one of the more enthusiastic Calendar Girls (2003), and as a lady experiencing the joys of pelvic massage in the Victorian-set comedy Hysteria (2011).- Andrew Bullivant is known for The Sarah Jane Adventures (2007), Wycliffe (1993) and Is It Real? (2005).
- Nicholas Courtney was born in Egypt, the son of a British diplomat. His early years were spent in Kenya and France and he was called up for National Service at the age of 18. After 18 months of duty in the British forces, Courtney joined the Webber Douglas drama school. He spent two years there and then did repertory theatre in Northampton. His next move was to London.
During the 1960s, he played some roles in popular TV series. In 1965, he made an appearance on Doctor Who (1963), during the tenure of William Hartnell. The director, Douglas Camfield, remembered him and, in 1967, cast him as "Captain Knight" in "Doctor Who" episode "The Web of Fear". He took the part of "Lethbridge-Stewart", which was to become his most famous role, when the actor originally cast in the part had to drop out. At this time, Patrick Troughton was the star of the series.
Shortly after this, Courtney was offered the chance to play the role regularly and accepted. This guaranteed him work until 1975, when the character was written out of the series. He became a good friend of Jon Pertwee during his time on the programme, and returned in 1983, 1988 and 1989. His other television work has included a comedy with Frankie Howerd. Courtney has maintained a close association with "Doctor Who", narrating the documentary Doctor Who: Thirty Years in the TARDIS (1993) and attending conventions and appearing in spin-offs. - Actor

Widely considered as one of the greatest stage and screen actors of his generation both in his native Scotland and internationally, David Tennant was born David John McDonald in West Lothian, Scotland, to Essdale Helen (McLeod) and Sandy McDonald, who was a Presbyterian minister. He is of Scottish and Ulster-Scots descent. When he was about 3 or 4 years old, he decided to become an actor, inspired by his love of Doctor Who (1963).
He was brought up in Bathgate, West Lothian and Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland and was a huge fan of the band The Proclaimers. He attended Paisley Grammar school and while there he wrote about how he wanted to become a professional actor and play the role of the Doctor in Doctor Who (1963).
He made his first television appearance (which was also his first professional acting job) when he was 16, after his father sent some photos of him to a casting director at Scottish television. He also attended a youth theatre group at weekends run by the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now renamed the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland). When he was 16 he auditioned for and won a place at the academy; the youngest student to ever do so, and started as a full time drama student when he was 17.
He worked regularly in theatre and TV after leaving drama school, and his first big break came in 1994 when he was cast in a lead role in the Scottish drama Takin' Over the Asylum (1994). He then moved to London where his career thrived. Among other significant factors of his prolific artistic course, he spent several years as a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, and became famous from his lead roles in TV dramas Blackpool (2004) and Casanova (2005).
In 2005, his childhood wish came true. David was cast to play the role of the Doctor in Doctor Who (2005) alongside Billie Piper, after Christopher Eccleston decided to leave. Playing the Doctor made him a household name and a sex symbol, being voted "Sexiest Man in the Universe" by readers of The Pink Paper and 16th Sexiest Man in the World by a Cosmopolitan survey. Since leaving the series in 2010 his career has continued to rise, with lead roles in films, TV series and theatre.- Actor

Zienia's childhood wish was to become a dancer, and upon securing her father's agreement she was registered at the dancing and acting school led by the "Arts Education Trust" in Tring, Hertfordshire, UK. But, as Zienia progressed, she found herself rather more interested in modern dance. Enjoying public performance, and taking into consideration her changing interests, she found herself gravitating towards the acting field. Without any official training, she began her career as an actress in the 1960s while still a teenager. It was a decade later, in the mid to late 1970s, that Zienia enjoyed one of her greatest professional successes when she garnered the role of Sandra Benes in the hit syndicated British science fiction television series Space: 1999 (1975). The series ran for two seasons of 48 episodes and gave her international exposure. In recent years, Zienia has roles in several films, made numerous television guest appearances, and has starred in live theatrical presentations in the UK, including "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "The Laundry, and "Present Continuous".
