Lots of characters to choose from, but these are my favorite!

1. Allen Leech

Actor | The Imitation Game

Allen Leech was born on May 18, 1981 in Killiney, County Dublin, Ireland. He is an actor and producer, known for The Imitation Game (2014), Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) and Downton Abbey (2010). He has been married to Jessica Blair Herman since January 5, 2019.

I'm always a fan of characters who have a foot in both worlds, and Tom Branson fits that! Abrasive and blunt early on, he learned how to embrace both worlds as well as find his place in them. His biggest challenge was always being accepted. He was a trailblazer, and trailblazers are among my favorite types of people.

2. Maggie Smith

Actress | Gosford Park

One of the world's most famous and distinguished actresses, Dame Maggie Smith was born Margaret Natalie Smith in Essex. Her Scottish mother, Margaret (Hutton), worked as a secretary, and her English father, Nathaniel Smith, was a teacher at Oxford University. Smith has been married twice: to actor ...

Opinionated, a traditionalist, and someone who absolutely hated anyone standing against her, Violet is still one of my favorite characters of the show, largely due to Maggie Smith's incredible prowess. Sometimes, it took Violet a while to come around, but when she did, there was nobody better to have in your corner. And the best zingers of the show came from Violet as well!

3. Dan Stevens

Actor | Downton Abbey

Dan Stevens was born at Croydon in Surrey on 10th October 1982. His parents are teachers. He was educated at Tonbridge School and trained in acting at the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain. He studied English Literature at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Whilst he was a Cambridge undergraduate, ...

Matthew Crawley represented the optimistic future. A man who was never going to be held by traditionalism and conformity. Matthew had a heart of gold, which was necessary to melt the ice queen's heart! He was gone too soon, and Downton was never the same after he left.

4. Laura Carmichael

Actress | Downton Abbey

Laura Carmichael was born on July 16, 1986 in Southampton, Hampshire, England, UK. She is an actress, known for Downton Abbey (2019), Downton Abbey (2010) and Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022).

The troubled Lady Edith, always trying to find her happiness but also her place in the world. As the often-overlooked middle sister, she struggled to find her way. She was proof that sometimes waiting longer for great things means you actually get them. By the time the series ended, we all cheered for her when she finally found her happiness and her place in the world.

5. Phyllis Logan

Actress | Secrets & Lies

Phyllis Logan was born on January 11, 1956 in Paisley, Scotland, UK. She is an actress, known for Secrets & Lies (1996), Another Time, Another Place (1983) and Downton Abbey (2010). She has been married to Kevin McNally since August 15, 2011. They have one child.

Mrs. Hughes is my favorite "downstairs" character. Strong, strict, but always fair and willing to help out anyone in need (even sometimes when they don't deserve it), Mrs. Hughes is the type of housekeeper anyone would want to have.

6. Hugh Bonneville

Actor | Downton Abbey

Hugh Bonneville is a British actor, known for his stage work at the National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company as well as the West End. His extensive film and television work includes Twenty Twelve, W1A, Downton Abbey, Paddington, The Gold and I Came By. See his website hughbonneville.uk for ...

Robert Crawley may often be judgmental and stubborn, but he's also a strong man with the weight of running Downton on his shoulders. He's a loving husband and father, and the right man to steer the Downton ship!

7. Jim Carter

Actor | Transformers: The Last Knight

Jim Carter was born on August 19, 1948 in Harrogate, Yorkshire, England, UK. He is an actor, known for Transformers: The Last Knight (2017), Shakespeare in Love (1998) and Downton Abbey (2019). He has been married to Imelda Staunton since October 1983. They have one child.

The "rock" of the downstairs staff. Mrs. Hughes had it right when she called Mr. Carson a curmudgeon. Perhaps only Violet has a greater distaste for change and the bending of rules. Carson is steadfast in his job. While he can also be judgmental and critical, this is a man who takes great pride in his work, and his relationship and love for Lady Mary are beautiful.

8. Penelope Wilton

Actress | The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Penelope Wilton was born on June 3, 1946 in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England, UK. She is an actress, known for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011), Shaun of the Dead (2004) and Match Point (2005). She was previously married to Ian Holm and Daniel Massey.

Watching Violet and Mrs. Crawley spar was like watching two professional tennis players going back and forth. While she can be headstrong, Mrs. Crawley represented the "old guard" who never feared change. In fact, she embraced it. Always quick to help others without any fear for herself, Mrs. Crawley was the ideal mother.

9. Robert James-Collier

Actor | Downton Abbey

Robert James-Collier was born on September 23, 1976 in Stockport, Greater Manchester, England. He is an actor, known for his role as Thomas Barrow in Downton Abbey (for which he won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series), The Ritual (2017) and ...

Yes, he was nasty, vile, and loved to create problems for everyone, both upstairs and downstairs. Still, by the time the series ended, M. Thomas Barrow was the most evolved character. A gay man trying to stay afloat at the turn of the century isn't something that anyone would envy, and yet Mr. Barrow came out the other side of a very dark tunnel filled with much hope that he could finally learn to accept himself.

10. Brendan Coyle

Actor | Downton Abbey

Brendan Coyle was born in Corby, Northamptonshire to an Irish father and Scottish mother; his parents moved to Corby from County Tyrone, Ireland. Brendan holds Irish citizenship and has previously lived in Dublin and London. However, according to a video clip from the site for "Rockface" he resides...

The unswerving Mr. Bates was like a rock! He never wavered, and while he was a very tough war veteran whom nobody would ever dare cross, his love for Anna was wholly complete and unconditional. I don't know of many women who would turn that down!

11. Jessica Brown Findlay

Actress | Brave New World

Jessica Brown Findlay is an English actress. She is known for Emelia Conan-Doyle in the British comedy-drama Albatross (2011), Winter's Tale (2014), This Beautiful Fantastic (2016) and Lady Sybil Crawley in ITV's Downton Abbey (2010). She also starred in the TV series Misfits (2009) and mini-series ...

The most progressive of the Crawley sisters, Sybil was selfless and perhaps the most daring as she ended up marrying the chauffeur, Tom Branson. Becoming a WWI convalescent nurse and attending political rallies, Sybil was fearless and embraced change. The episode of her passing is still one of the toughest episodes of the series to get through.

12. Lesley Nicol

Actress | Downton Abbey

Born in 1953, to a mother who had worked in television, Lesley Nicol was a shy 16-year-old at St. Elphin's Boarding School in Derbyshire when she expressed a desire to go out and see the world - not, she recalls, to be an actress but to kiss boys. She went to a technical college in Manchester to ...

The delightful Mrs. Patmore was the leader of the kitchen. Sharp-tongued, especially at Daisy in the early seasons, she also had a heart of gold who took great pride in her cooking.

13. Kevin Doyle

Actor | Downton Abbey

Kevin Doyle is an English actor. He was born in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, England in 1961. He is better known as the perpetually unlucky butler-turned-footman Molesley in Downton Abbey (2010). He has appeared in shows such as Happy Valley (2014), Scott & Bailey (2011), and the 2016 ITV TV ...

When humor was needed, Mr. Mosely often provided it. Whether it was getting drunk before serving or dancing a Scottish jig while intoxicated, Mr. Mosely was the quiet but generous butler.

14. Raquel Cassidy

Actress | Downton Abbey

Raquel Cassidy was born on January 22, 1968 in Fleet, Hampshire, England, UK. She is an actress, known for Downton Abbey (2019), Downton Abbey (2010) and Teachers (2001).

Mrs. Baxter was my favorite of the maids. A gentle and sweet woman with a dark, mysterious past. She was the only person who seemed able to ward off Thomas Barrow's stinging remarks, bullying, and criticism.

15. Lily James

Actress | Cinderella

Lily James was born Lily Chloe Ninette Thomson in Esher, Surrey, to Ninette (Mantle), an actress, and Jamie Thomson, an actor and musician. Her grandmother, Helen Horton, was an American actress. She began her education at Arts Educational School in Tring and subsequently went on to study acting at...

Rose was high-strung, but a woman who knew her own mind and heart. Despite the sharp bullying and criticisms of her horrible mother, Rose was the bright sunshine of the family. Always with a smile, and at times reckless, she was as pure as the driven snow, and just as delightful to be around.
