- DirectorMarc JobstStarsIñaki GodoyEmily RuddMackenyuA boy named Monkey D. Luffy embarks on a journey to attain the greatest treasure: the one piece. After the former pirate king's public execution 22 years ago, the world has entered a great pirate era, and Luffy aims to be at the top.8.5/10
Some not-so-good acting in the first half, but they kept to the source material decently well. The vfx were actually decent, and it seems that all of the cringe dialogue in the trailers but made just for the trailers; the rest of the dialogue was pretty good. - DirectorMarc JobstStarsIñaki GodoyEmily RuddMackenyuLuffy, Zoro, and Nami find themselves imprisoned on an island overtaken by the deranged clown pirate, Buggy. Koby joins the Marines and proves his mettle.8.25/10
Less cringey dialogue and some good stuff. I absolutely love the wide angle lens. I think it's alright actually that they're showing the Koby and Helmeppo stuff because I imagine once they get to baroqueworks it won't be as true to the source material, which is understandable. - DirectorEmma SullivanStarsIñaki GodoyEmily RuddMackenyuLuffy, Zoro, and Nami meet Usopp in the Syrup Village a small, peaceful village. Usopp tells all sorts of lies about his adventures he has never been to his friend, Kaya, who has been sick in bed for over a year since she lost her parents.7.5/10
Decent episode. I think they did a good job making syrup village interesting, and the plot beats were the same as in the manga even if they are jumbled up and in different locations. - DirectorEmma SullivanStarsIñaki GodoyEmily RuddMackenyuLuffy, Zoro, and Nami fight their way through Kaya's mansion, which has now become a prison. Usopp enlists the help of Koby, Helmeppo, and the Marines. Luffy finally gets the ship of his dreams as Garp closes in.7/10
- DirectorTim SouthamStarsIñaki GodoyEmily RuddMackenyuLuffy and the gang are tested in their ability to fight together on the high seas. They arrive at Baratie, a floating restaurant, where they encounter Sanji, a young chef with a love of fine dining. A duel on the docks shocks the group.9/10
Hell yeah. - DirectorTim SouthamStarsIñaki GodoyEmily RuddMackenyuThe group is ambushed by a threat no one sees coming. After a hard-fought battle at the Baratie, Sanji finally follows his dreams while another crew member shows their true colors.7.5/10
- DirectorJosef Kubota WladykaStarsIñaki GodoyEmily RuddMackenyuGarp is one step away from finding Luffy as he arrives at Baratie. Luffy and the boys all travel to Coco Village; in an attempt to find the estranged and distraught Nami, they meet a villager that has a dark and painful history with her.7.75/10
I feel like they've rushed a lot of this so the emotional beats don't hit quite as hard as they should. - DirectorJosef Kubota WladykaStarsIñaki GodoyEmily RuddMackenyuLuffy and the others charge towards Arlong Park after a broken Nami utters the words "Help me." Luffy encounters Arlong meanwhile the gang fend off against Arlong's crew as a cheeky Buggy makes his escape. A new pirate crew is born.8.5/10
Smoker spotted. Overall I think the show is good. A lot of people were probably expecting a disaster from Netflix, but I think Oda being so involved stopped a lot of the interferring that they'd probably do with other properties. A lot of teases for season 2, and seeing the back of smoker's head was epic. I really just want to see more of the crew interact. It feels like since the last 3 episodes or so has just been constant action and jumping from manga plot-point to manga plot-point there's not been much room to breathe; never thought I'd say I wanted filler but I really just want to see the crew hang out. I understand why they put Arlong in Baratie due to the format, but I know, and I think they know, that going forward it's actually going to be impossible to stick to this format of small changes. There's so much source material and so many pointless or just shit arcs and they obviously want to get to the good stuff soon. I'm expecting an Enies Lobby in about Season 3 which doesn't give them much time to do literally everything else. I'm sure they'll find a way. I think I can still notice covid affecting some scenes, like when the entire village just disappears when they're fighting Arlong; but I guess it's unavoidable and will get better with time. Even though it did have a high budget, I didn't actually feel like the budget was that high. It didn't really **feel** like it was a big-budget production, even if the VFX was all fine, and even good in some places. It's difficult to explain but I think the outlandish locale of the East Blue locations makes it impossible to film anywhere but a set. Once we get to arcs like Alabasta I imagine there will be less sets because the locations are actually just from real life.
