- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsDonald PleasenceJamie Lee CurtisTony MoranFifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again. The ultimate Halloween movie. Michael Myers terrorizes family and friends.
- DirectorRick RosenthalStarsJamie Lee CurtisDonald PleasenceCharles CyphersWhile Dr. Loomis hunts for Michael Myers, a traumatized Laurie is rushed to Haddonfield Memorial Hospital, and The Shape is not far behind her.A great sequel, that picks-up immediately where the original ended.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsNeve CampbellCourteney CoxDavid ArquetteA year after the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorized by a masked killer who targets her and her friends by using scary movies as part of a deadly game.I love the concept of knowing the "rules to survive a horror movie." And, you can feel the changing of the seasons.
- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsDavid EmgeKen ForeeScott H. ReinigerDuring an escalating zombie epidemic, two Philadelphia SWAT team members, a traffic reporter and his TV executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall.Possibly the best zombie movie of all time, as survivors head for the safety of a mall.
- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsDuane JonesJudith O'DeaKarl HardmanA ragtag group of Pennsylvanians barricade themselves in an old farmhouse to remain safe from a horde of flesh-eating ghouls that are ravaging the Northeast of the United States. The Original. Which spawned the zombie movie outbreak.
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsSimon PeggNick FrostKate AshfieldThe uneventful, aimless lives of a London electronics salesman and his layabout roommate are disrupted by the zombie apocalypse. The best zombie spoof ever. It is hilarious, and has some scary moments. Great for non-horror lovers to start with.
- DirectorRoss PattersonStarsKeith DavidSean AstinDanny TrejoVeterans wake up after a night of partying to find out that the zombie apocalypse has spread across the United States. You gotta be a sick puppy (like me!) to enjoy this zombie-spoof. Made by Vets, for Vets and First Responders mainly, it has several cameos including MMA fighters.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsDonald PleasenceLisa BlountJameson ParkerA group of graduate students and scientists uncover an ancient canister in an abandoned church, but when they open the container, they inadvertently unleash a strange liquid and an evil force on all humanity. If you buy into this movie's idea, it is pretty scary. As a John Carpenter flick, it's very campy, sometimes silly, with a few laughs thrown-in.
- DirectorRoman PolanskiStarsJack MacGowranRoman PolanskiAlfie BassA noted professor and his dim-witted apprentice fall prey to their inquiring vampires, while on the trail of the ominous damsel in distress.A classic vampire movie, in spite of the director's troubles. Very campy and funny, with great atmosphere.
- DirectorDrew GoddardStarsKristen ConnollyChris HemsworthAnna HutchisonFive college friends head out to a remote cabin for a getaway, but things don't go as planned when they start getting killed. They soon discover that there is more to the cabin than it seems. This has become one of my favorites. It contains most every creature from our nightmares, with a very entertaining twist. Horror-comedy.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBruce CampbellSarah BerryDan HicksAsh Williams, the lone survivor of an earlier onslaught of flesh-possessing spirits, holes up in a cabin with a group of strangers while the demons continue their attack.Still a favorite of mine, this is basically a remake of the original. Overdoses on the blood and gore, but if you don't take it too seriously it has some serious humor to it. And, it spawned a great series: Ash vs. Evil Dead!
- DirectorMarc ForsterStarsBrad PittMireille EnosDaniella KerteszFormer United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop a zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatens to destroy humanity itself.Loosely-based on the book with the same name, this one is surprisingly great. The main character is a globe-trotting "Fireman," trying to solve the zombie plague. A bit more terrifying, because of "fast" zombies.
- StarsDavid SoulJames MasonLance KerwinA novelist and a young horror fan attempt to save a small New England town which has been invaded by vampires.Based on Stephen King's book/story, and this mini-series captures it pretty well.
- StarsChris SarandonPlayers assume the identity of vampire Jerry Dandrige, who searches his mansion for intruders to kill.A funny one about the vampire who moves-in next door.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsJames WoodsDaniel BaldwinSheryl LeeRecovering from an ambush that killed his entire team, a vengeful vampire slayer must retrieve an ancient Catholic relic that, should it be acquired by vampires, will allow them to walk in sunlight.John Carpenter takes-on the vampires, with a team of vampire-hunters led by James Woods.
- DirectorDan O'BannonStarsClu GulagerJames KarenDon CalfaWhen two bumbling employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to rise again as zombies.Zombie-spoof that is pretty funny.
- DirectorJuan Carlos FresnadilloStarsJeremy RennerRose ByrneRobert CarlyleSix months after the rage virus was inflicted on the population of Great Britain, the US Army helps to secure a small area of London for the survivors to repopulate and start again. But not everything goes according to plan.I prefer this sequel over 28 Days Later. The zombies are fast-movers, and it contains some scenes of true terror.
- DirectorScott StewartStarsPaul BettanyDennis QuaidCharles S. DuttonWhen a group of strangers at a dusty roadside diner come under attack by demonic forces, their only chance for survival lies with an archangel named Michael, who informs a pregnant waitress that her unborn child is humanity's last hope.Legion combines the religious battle between God and the devil, along with some hints of zombies. Stars Dennis Quaid.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsAdrienne BarbeauJamie Lee CurtisJanet LeighAn unearthly fog rolls into a small coastal town exactly 100 years after a ship mysteriously sank in its waters.Another John Carpenter classic, as a small fishing town fears what the fog brings. Great atmosphere, with a few good scares.
- DirectorDavid SladeStarsJosh HartnettMelissa GeorgeDanny HustonAfter an Alaskan town is plunged into darkness for a month, it is attacked by a bloodthirsty gang of vampires.Alaska villagers find themselves locked-down, with a family of vampires stalking them. To me, it plays like the vampire-version of one of my favorite westerns: For a Few Dollars More, when the banditos are stalking Clint Eastwood around town. Ben Foster is great in this one; almost as good as 3:10 to Yuma.
- DirectorTim BurtonStarsAlec BaldwinGeena DavisMichael KeatonThe spirits of a deceased couple are harassed by an unbearable family that has moved into their home, and hire a malicious spirit to drive them out.A great comedy about the afterlife, and ghosts. Michael Keaton is hilarious in the title role.
- DirectorStuart GordonStarsJeffrey CombsBruce AbbottBarbara CramptonAfter an odd new medical student arrives on campus, a dedicated local and his girlfriend become involved in bizarre experiments centering around the re-animation of dead tissue.Based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft, this is the story of Herbert West's quest to re-animate the dead. As always, Jeffrey Combs is deadpan hilarious.
- DirectorNimród AntalStarsKate BeckinsaleLuke WilsonFrank WhaleyStranded in an isolated motel, a couple become the unsuspecting subjects of a snuff film.A young couple fights back to avoid becoming this motel's next victims.
- DirectorDon CoscarelliStarsA. Michael BaldwinBill ThornburyReggie BannisterA teenage boy and his friends face off against a mysterious grave robber, known only as the Tall Man, who employs a lethal arsenal of unearthly weapons.Phantasm is a classic. "The Tall Man" rolls through towns robbing graves. I love the sequel too.
- DirectorBreck EisnerStarsRadha MitchellTimothy OlyphantDanielle PanabakerAfter a strange and insecure plane crash, an unusual toxic virus enters a quaint farming town. A young couple are quarantined, but they fight for survival along with help from a couple of people.A great remake of George Romero's original (which is very watchable in its own right). Entertaining, with great scares. This one can really play today as "The Crazies" should remind you of videos we see all too often these days of modern-day "zombies" under the influence and violent.
