6.1
A rich and enjoyable big screen spectacle.
Working more like a James Cameron greatest hits compilation more than a stand alone, distinctive addition to his already impressive oeuvre; Avatar is nonetheless a visually impressive and immersive experience.
Much like Top Gun: Maverick, this is a deeply earnest cinematic experience not blighted knowing or cynical irony and it’s all the better for it. - DirectorMark MylodStarsRalph FiennesAnya Taylor-JoyNicholas HoultA young couple travels to a remote island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises.5/1/23
4.6
Finally, the film we’ve all been waiting for - Lord Voldemort‘s remake of Ratatouille. Seriously though, much like the food it mocks, The Menu is a largely unlikeable and haughty experience.
Smeared with a smug, self satisfied air, the film is oddly stilted and choppy especially with its early wallpapering. As the film continues this seems to be the point; art without love or care is just masturbation; an unhealthy diversion. Do the ends ever truly justify the means?
Tonally, it’s the same superficially “playful” satire we’ve seen and read a hundred times. A story where a vacuous decadence masks a sinister all consuming truth. It’s nasty, mean spirited and deeply postmodern. The rich may need a bloody nose but do we have to do it with such sour self aggrandising? Especially given the film industry’s hand in propagating this disgusting eco system of aloof social cannibalism. The humour here is a tad misjudged, it’s characters are too frigid to be vessels for gags and genuine humour. Instead, we are treated to series of knowing chuckles and absurd snorts. We’ve seen these cliched characters hit all these notes, we’ve laughed at their out of touch stupidity a million times before. It’s all abit icky. We seem to want to venerate the “normal” or “normies”forgetting that the same corruptibility exists in us all. As a window into the pretence, Nicholas Hoult’s character has to be more than just an wannabe asshole. I kept expecting some kind of redemption, characterisation or arc but it never came. Ana Taylor-Joy is an alluring presence and she is the (black) heart of the film but even she suffers from a bad case of obnoxiousness. There are so many questions it’s not really worth contemplation.
Absurd and cynical, what does The Menu amount to? What does it all mean? Like the (metaphorical) culinary world it skewers, The Menu’s metaphors, themes and impact are fleeting and ephemeral. - DirectorAndrew DavisStarsShia LaBeoufSigourney WeaverJon VoightA wrongfully convicted boy is sent to a brutal desert detention camp where he joins the job of digging holes for some mysterious reason.7/1/23
5.6
An entertaining, if wildly inconsistent, intergenerational old skool children’s movie.
There’s some really great stuff in Holes. There’s also some really baffling, whiplash inducing tonal shifts. It’s ambitious which is to be celebrated but is ultimately hamstrung by a messy execution. A surer hand (Andrew Davis is GREAT but maybe this isn’t his speed?) would’ve reigned in some of the more wayward ideas and focussed on the emotionality which is the story’s strength. - DirectorTravis StevensStarsSarah LindJosh RubenMalin BarrA serial killer brings an unsuspecting new victim on a weekend getaway to add another body to his ever-growing count. She's buying into his faux charms, and he's eagerly lusting for blood. What could possibly go wrong?9/1/23
6.1
A well made, surprising and often effective surrealist horror “throwback”.
Full of memorable shots and sequences, A Wounded Fawn is a decent hallucinogenic chiller. Fans of Mandy (2018) will engage with the execution and ambition on offer whilst casual horror fans might be turned off by the often obtuse cinematic language.
It’s Fresh (2022) for art freaks. - DirectorKyle Edward BallStarsCourtney McNeillyJeffty EllisonA little kid wakes up in the middle of night to the sound of his mom's television blaring.11/1/23
5.7
Oblique and unsettling.
Kyle Edward Ball has crafted an idiosyncratic, eerie short chiller with just raw materials. It may not come together in a narratively satisfying manner but the ride itself is worth the obtuse, nightmarish visual “POV” language and its slightly leaden ambiguity.
Certainly not for everyone, heck, I’m not even sure I’m totally on board with this. However, it made me want to see what he can do with his upcoming feature, so that must count for something…. - DirectorKyle Edward BallStarsLucas PaulDali Rose TetreaultRoss PaulTwo children wake up in the middle of the night to find their father is missing, and all the windows and doors in their home have vanished.12/1/23
6.4
Effective, unnerving and beguiling, Skinamarink exists in that icky half space between childlike naïveté, woozy nostalgia and nightmare.
Much like Cathedral (2022), Skinamarink uses an almost entirely subjective lens to get under the viewers skin. Without hip and modern machinations of storytelling we are left to ponder on the sequence of shots, the things that may or may not be lingering in the grainy darkness and ultimately, what it all means. That said, there are some effective jump scares on offer here, which serve to punctuate the otherwise oblique and potentially soporific, esoteric cinematic stylings. There are some truly memorable shots and moments in Skinamarink including an ending that will haunt the dark spaces in your home for the foreseeable future.
A successful experiment. The perfect antidote to the cookie cutter crap we are usually served up in and outside of the horror genre. - DirectorNorman McLarenStarsGrant MunroJean Paul LadouceurA surreal story of two neighbours' destructive feud over a flower.15/1/23
7.5
Innovative and clever. Timeless and pertinent. A mini masterpiece. - DirectorJan SvankmajerStarsMonika Belo-CabanováOlga VronskáAleksandr LetkoA little girl goes down to the basement cellar to fetch some potatoes, and finds all her hidden fears about the cellar depicted in animated form.16/1/23
6.2
An effective, imaginative and atmospheric allegorical nightmare. Memorable practical effects and icky, claustrophobic mise-en-scène make it well worth a punt. - DirectorGerard JohnstoneStarsAllison WilliamsViolet McGrawRonny ChiengA robotics engineer at a toy company builds a life-like doll that begins to take on a life of its own.Cliched and predictable. Silly and fun. As future shocks go M3gan isn’t anything knew nor does it offer much in the way of compelling ideas but it is a satisfying distraction.
- DirectorJoel CrawfordJanuel MercadoStarsAntonio BanderasSalma HayekHarvey GuillénWhen Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for adventure has taken its toll and he has burned through eight of his nine lives, he launches an epic journey to restore them by finding the mythical Last Wish.Handsome and fun. Sweet and good natured. The Last Wish is a great example of what modern animation can and should be - broadly entertaining, non-preachy and thematically rich.
- DirectorJames LapineStarsMichael J. FoxChristina VidalNathan LaneA once-popular actor who now runs a talent agency specializing in child acts is trying to discover the next star. He gets more than he bargained for when he recruits a child pickpocket.Good natured and earnest. Sweet and charming. Life With Mikey skates by on the appeal of its lively cast; it’s light and fun like kiddie entertainment should be.
- DirectorJohn KrasinskiStarsEmily BluntMillicent SimmondsCillian MurphyFollowing the events at home, the Abbott family now face the terrors of the outside world. Forced to venture into the unknown, they realize the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats lurking beyond the sand path.Tense and handsome. Interesting if unsatisfying. A Quiet Place 2 starts well and ends in a muddle. After a really well done intercut, three pronged, tension filled set piece the third act runs aground as the ideas and narrative dry up. It’s a shame.
- DirectorCaleb J. PhillipsStarsNick TagTeagan RoseJosh SchellA couple receives a mysterious package from an old friend.Familiar and predictable. Modestly effective and slight. Horror is often judged on the strength of its central idea/thesis or it’s villain, The Other Side of the Box has a pretty creepy central villain “design” which just about gets it over the line.
- DirectorEvan CooperStarsHannah BarlowKirk BaltzBradley RoseA struggling actress moves to Hollywood where she discovers a piece of furniture in her apartment is haunted by a malicious ghost.Familiar and stilted. Oblique and tawdry.
This needed another shade to it. As it is, it feels particularly thin and predictable. Short films often fall into cyclical structures, which are mostly unsatisfying. If you then couple this with a tired “cursed object” plot you end up with something bland and empty. - DirectorJustin DaeringStarsChasen BauerWyni LandryChristian DunlopWhen a factory worker is implanted with his alien boss's parasitic offspring, he asks his wife to perform an illegal operation to remove it.Wild and subversive. Brash and ambitious.
Progeny works as a unironic and subversive “play” on some pretty hot button issues. Power dynamics, rape, abortion and religion are all short through a low maintenance sci fi prism. It’s a little self serious at times and veers dangerously close to SNL sketch type parody but it just about works. - StarsCesc FàbregasGary LinekerLionel MessiIncluding incredible footage, this wide-reaching documentary gains a detailed understanding of the real Lionel Messi. This is Messi as you've never seen him before.Brief and superficial. Mawkish and venerating.
Messi seems to be more of a companion piece than a stand alone “film” as it is the viewer gains nothing more than a shower shallow, cosmetic look at a prodigious talent. - DirectorChris SandersStarsHarrison FordOmar SyCara GeeA sled dog struggles for survival in the wilds of the Yukon.

A dry and largely dull affair. This needed to drop some of the more fatuous narrative threads; as it is it’s needlessly long and overblown. It’s handsome and stately (but for some ropey CGI) yet oddly shower shallow when all is said and done. - DirectorRob SavageStarsAlice LoweBeau GadsdonJames SwantonA demonic presence closes in on a mother and her sick daughter. - DirectorMark JenkinStarsMary WoodvineEdward RoweFlo CroweSet in 1973 on an uninhabited island off the Cornish coast, a wildlife volunteer's daily observations of a rare flower turn into a metaphysical journey that forces her as well as the viewer to question what is real and what is a nightmare.6.4
Esoteric, dreamlike mood piece.
Although it bears some of the aesthetic hallmarks of Jenkin’s previous film, the excellent Bait, Enys Men is a completely different animal. It’s cold, difficult and often aloof. We are treated to an incomprehensible narrative replete with allegory, dream, time shifts and creepy weirdness.
What does it all mean? I’m not totally sure. There’s a sense of everything happening at once on the island. Time and memory are folding in on themselves. It’s all memory not just the lonely woman’s. She remembers herself but she is experiencing the island’s memories too; the tragedies that the waves of time eventually washed away from existence. Existence is fleeting/ephemeral yet paradoxically it continues; things just replace things.
What does it amount to? It’s a beautiful film if not a wholly satisfying one. It lingers in the memory. It repeats on you like few modern films do. There are so many questions….
The film both benefits and suffers from a lack of grounding. There are moments that lean into this idea and create a really interesting atmosphere but other moments fall flat and skitter away. There’s plenty to like here though; the filmmaking feels fresh despite its dreamy 70s nostalgic leanings - we just don’t get too many movies that look and feel like this. It’s a film I will revisit, perhaps after watching and doing some reading about the production and/or thematics. It’s one that you can interpret yourself in the moment but a film that possibly benefits greatly from authorial explanation or guidance.
Film should be interesting and challenging. One only has to look at some of the more cerebral or arcane examples of Bergman, Tarkovsky or Żuławski’s work to see that a primary function of cinema is prick interest and to draw you in rather than to spoon feed. Once you get bitten by the bug, it’s an itch that you can’t stop scratching. You peel back the layers to see that there’s a richer world of symbols and allegory.
Between this and Skinamarink, it seems there is growing interest in more mood, personality and auteur based cinema. We’ve been force fed overly saturated, bloated films for so long perhaps a few gaps will open up for more such experimentations in the “mainstream”. - DirectorRob SavageStarsCaroline WardHaley BishopRadina DrandovaWhen a sonic pulse infects the hearing population, a small group of Deaf people must band together to survive.

- DirectorSidney J. FurieStarsBarbara HersheyRon SilverDavid LabiosaA woman is tormented by an invisible being.Purely cinematic.
Furie shot the shit out of this movie. There’s lots of Dutch angles, split diopter shots and wildly inventive visual language. The subject matter is troubling and the various themes are explored as well as can be expected for a genre picture. It may not have the emotionally satisfying ending of a Poltergeist or The Exorcist but there’s plenty of well done shocks along the way. There are several memorable sequences throughout, all shot with confidence and lyricism. The FX (Winston and co) are pretty neat throughout too and barring the ice monster, are well integrated to the (possibly) duelling stories. Hershey is great here, she walks a difficult line between ingenue and the fractious victim of horrible abuse(s). It would’ve been easy for her character to end up meek and annoying but Hershey imbues her with some real steel in spite of her vulnerability. Also featuring a really overblown (in a good way) score with a memorable main theme, The Entity is a minor horror classic. - DirectorJim MickleStarsNick DamiciKim BlairRon BriceA deadly infection breaks out in Manhattan, causing humans to develop into blood-thirsty rat creatures.
