- DirectorAkira KurosawaStarsToshirô MifuneTakashi ShimuraKeiko TsushimaFarmers from a village exploited by bandits hire a veteran samurai for protection, who gathers six other samurai to join him.Excellent story telling and characterisation, perfect balance between depth and enterteinment.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroJodie FosterCybill ShepherdA mentally unstable veteran works as a nighttime taxi driver in New York City, where the perceived decadence and sleaze fuels his urge for violent action. The most compelling character study in cinema, great acting from everyone involved, flawless cinematography.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsHarrison FordRutger HauerSean YoungA blade runner must pursue and terminate four replicants who stole a ship in space and have returned to Earth to find their creator. The standard for visual world-building in SF.
- DirectorHideaki AnnoKazuya TsurumakiStarsMegumi OgataMegumi HayashibaraYûko MiyamuraConcurrent theatrical ending of the TV series Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995).One of the most visceral experiences put on screen. Frustrating in all the right ways.
- DirectorMizuho NishikuboMamoru OshiiStarsAtsuko TanakaIemasa KayumiAkio ÔtsukaA cyborg policewoman and her partner hunt a mysterious and powerful hacker called the Puppet Master. The perfect complimentary work to Blade Runner. A movie that feels at the same very tight, with nothing unecessary to the whole, but also carefully executed. Perfection of form.
- DirectorPark Chan-wookStarsChoi Min-sikYoo Ji-taeKang Hye-jeongAfter being kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years, Oh Dae-Su is released, only to find that he must track down his captor in five days. One of those perfect on all fronts kind of movies, the only complaint is that you sometimes wonder if the darkness and the tragedy is a scope in itself.
- DirectorAndrei TarkovskyStarsNatalya BondarchukDonatas BanionisJüri JärvetA psychologist is sent to a station orbiting a distant planet in order to discover what has caused the crew to go insane.More of a complete space movie than 2001, having great acting and pondering themes relating to the actual human experience.
- DirectorAndrei TarkovskyStarsAlisa FreyndlikhAleksandr KaydanovskiyAnatoliy SolonitsynA guide leads two men through an area known as the Zone to find a room that grants wishes. When it comes to mastery of the aesthetics in movies, I dont think anyone is close to being as cosistent and textured as Tarkovsky. The writter is a very compelling character once you get used to his non-stop arguing, as well as the fragile yet determined stalker.
- DirectorMichel GondryStarsJim CarreyKate WinsletTom WilkinsonWhen their relationship turns sour, a couple undergoes a medical procedure to have each other erased from their memories forever.Perfect balance between visionary direction and compelling but easy to understand drama.
- DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsYôji MatsudaYuriko IshidaYûko TanakaOn a journey to find the cure for a Tatarigami's curse, Ashitaka finds himself in the middle of a war between the forest gods and Tatara, a mining colony. In this quest he also meets San, the Mononoke Hime.Maybe the most technically perfect anime movie alongside Spirited Away but with much more compelling drama and characterisation.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsKeir DulleaGary LockwoodWilliam SylvesterAfter uncovering a mysterious artifact buried beneath the Lunar surface, a spacecraft is sent to Jupiter to find its origins: a spacecraft manned by two men and the supercomputer HAL 9000.Probably the most flawed masterpiece in cinema (the dialogue and acting -except Bowman and Hal- leaves alot to be desired), but also the most brilliant of them all. Only movie that is better compared to great works of sculpture or arhitecture, rather than stories or novel.
- DirectorBong Joon HoStarsSong Kang-hoLee Sun-kyunCho Yeo-jeongGreed and class discrimination threaten the newly formed symbiotic relationship between the wealthy Park family and the destitute Kim clan.A pretty much perfect movie. It probably just needs more time to become an absolute favorite of mine.
- DirectorAkira KurosawaStarsTatsuya NakadaiAkira TeraoJinpachi NezuIn Medieval Japan, an elderly warlord retires, handing over his empire to his three sons. However, he vastly underestimates how the new-found power will corrupt them and cause them to turn on each other...and him.Kurosawa as his most visually brilliant.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleHeath LedgerAaron EckhartWhen a menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman, James Gordon and Harvey Dent must work together to put an end to the madness.Perfect balance of blockbuster enterteinment and strong thematic narrative, and of course one of the most brilliant acting performances ever from Ledger. Would have been higher if not for some of the most remarkably bland day time visuals on this list.
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsHarrison FordRyan GoslingAna de ArmasYoung Blade Runner K's discovery of a long-buried secret leads him to track down former Blade Runner Rick Deckard, who's been missing for thirty years.Great movie experience, the closest modern cinema comes to the like of the original Blade Runner, 2001 or Tarkovsky, but also an obvious follow-up.
- DirectorSatoshi KonStarsJunko IwaoRica MatsumotoShinpachi TsujiA pop singer gives up her career to become an actress, but she slowly goes insane when she starts being stalked by an obsessed fan and what seems to be a ghost of her past.Visceral psychological thriller that deals with the difference between reality and fiction.
- DirectorNicolas Winding RefnStarsRyan GoslingCarey MulliganBryan CranstonA mysterious Hollywood action film stuntman gets in trouble with gangsters when he tries to help his neighbor's husband rob a pawn shop while serving as his getaway driver.Maybe the best looking movie ever made or at least close, and lacking in the qualities that make his other movies hard to watch.
- DirectorBong Joon HoStarsSong Kang-hoKim Sang-kyungKim Roe-haIn a small Korean province in 1986, two detectives struggle with the case of multiple young women being found raped and murdered by an unknown culprit.Tense crime movie with very powerfull ending from the director of Parasite, and while the later plays more with genres, this one has far more remarkable cinematography.
- DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsSumi ShimamotoMahito TsujimuraHisako KyôdaWarrior and pacifist Princess Nausicaä desperately struggles to prevent two warring nations from destroying themselves and their dying planet.Incredible imaginative world-building, dark in vision yet optimistic, though Mononoke is closer to being perfect.
- DirectorMamoru OshiiStarsMako HyôdôJinpachi NezuKeiichi NodaA mysterious young girl wanders a desolate, otherworldly landscape, carrying a large egg.
- DirectorAkira KurosawaStarsToshirô MifuneMachiko KyôMasayuki MoriThe rape of a bride and the murder of her samurai husband are recalled from the perspectives of a bandit, the bride, the samurai's ghost and a woodcutter.Brilliant psychological take on an otherwise simple story and flawless cinematography, just lacking in the epic qualites of later Kurosawa.
- DirectorKar-Wai WongStarsTony Leung Chiu-waiMaggie CheungSiu Ping-LamTwo neighbors form a strong bond after both suspect extramarital activities of their spouses. However, they agree to keep their bond platonic so as not to commit similar wrongs.
- DirectorPark Chan-wookStarsKim Min-heeHa Jung-wooCho Jin-woongIn 1930s Korea, a girl is hired as a handmaiden to a Japanese heiress who lives a secluded life on a countryside estate. But the maid has a secret: She is a pickpocket recruited by a swindler to help seduce the Lady and steal her fortune.
- DirectorBrian De PalmaStarsAl PacinoMichelle PfeifferSteven BauerMiami in the 1980s: a determined criminal minded Cuban immigrant, becomes the biggest drug smuggler in Florida, and is eventually undone by his own drug addiction.A movie that shouldn't be this entertaining, but it is thanks to Pacino's exhilarating performance, and definitely one of the best endings ever.
- DirectorDavid LynchStarsIsabella RosselliniKyle MacLachlanDennis HopperThe discovery of a severed human ear found in a field leads a young man on an investigation related to a beautiful, mysterious nightclub singer and a group of psychopathic criminals who have kidnapped her child.Looks amazing and very entertaining, maybe too entertaining for how dark its themes are.
