A group of teenagers, unprepared for their final exams due to their indulgence in more pleasurable pursuits, barricade themselves in their school and challenge their despised and sadistic headmaster.

This Flemish heimat-movie after a novel by Felix Timmermans, the title of which translates as "farmers psalm", is about the at first sight idyllic, but actually tragical life of Wortel, a god-fearing peasant in a pre-war Belgian village, who has a hard time accepting the curate's assurance it's all part of God's grand plan when his loved ones keep coming to terrible harm, and searching solace in the hand-carving of a wooden statue of Christ.

The scene is a pre-French Revolution Bastille, where various political prisoners are being held: a woman who was raped and impregnated by the king, a police chief who was accused of selling bad pork, and the Marquis, who was unjustly accused of working for the overthrow of the king. The Marquis is only interested in writing his deviant stories, while his penis yearns for a little action (they argue about this frequently), the prime candidate being the jailer who likes to be buggered. The corrupt priest arranges to have the pregnant woman raped by the Marquis so they can claim the king had nothing to do with it. The priest also steals the Marquis' manuscripts and publishes them for his own profit. Things come to a head as the people rise up against the tyranny.

This Flemish comedy format (the title is a Dutch exclamation that can mean "ouch!" or "oops!", depending whether victim or perpetrator utters it) was a rapid succession of short sketches, usually with little or no text and mainly visual points, rather in Benny Hill's slapstick-style, but without recurring characters, just a pool of actors in very diverse, often caricature-like parts, often bungling professionals and innocent butts of accidents etcetera.
