Guy Ritchie-Jason Statham Action Pic Sold To Germany, France, Italy, Spain, More

Exclusive: Miramax has concluded a raft of seven-figure deals on Guy Ritchie’s untitled Jason Statham action-thriller which was launched by the firm and CAA Media Finance at the American Film Market earlier this month.

Deals have now closed with Studiocanal for Germany and Australia/Nz, Metropolitan for France, Tripictures & DeAPlaneta for Spain, Leone for Italy and Volga for Russia/Cis.

Pacts have also been finalized with The Searchers for Benelux, Vertical for Eastern Europe, Eagle for the Middle East, Vvs for Canada, Klockworx for Japan, Joy n Cinema for Korea and MovieCloud for Taiwan.

The project, which re-teams Ritchie and Statham for the first time since Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch and Revolver almost 15 years ago, was one of the hot properties at the Afm. As we revealed, MGM acquired the film domestically and will distribute via MGM’s joint venture UA Releasing. MGM also acquired a handful of international markets.

‘Fast & Furious’ Veteran Chris Morgan Signs Overall Deal With Sony Pictures TV
Chris Morgan, a co-writer and producer on the “Fast & Furious” spinoff, “Hobbs & Shaw,” has signed an exclusive overall deal with Sony Pictures TV.

The deal, of which the terms were not disclosed, will see Morgan’s company, Chris Morgan Productions, develop series for broadcast, cable and streaming platforms. Cmp is already pitching two series to streaming and pay-cable networks: “Half-Life” and “The Ripleys.”

“Half-Life” is a sci-fi drama from Grant Wheeler and Ben Freiburger, while “The Ripleys” is a dark comedy from Duane Swierczynski. Cmp has also acquired the rights to novels “The Family Upstairs,” from Lisa Jewell, and “If I Die Tonight,” written by Alison Gaylin.

Chris Morgan Inks Overall Deal With Sony Pictures TV, Lines Up First Projects
Exclusive: Hobbs & Shaw co-writer/producer Chris Morgan has closed a three-year overall deal with Sony Pictures Television for his Chris Morgan Prods. to develop series aimed at broadcast, cable and streaming.

Under the pact, Cmp is already pitching two series projects to premium/streaming networks: sci-fi drama Half-Life, written by Grant Wheeler & Ben Freiburger, creators of YouTube Red’s sci-fi thriller series Lifeline that was produced by Dwayne Johnson; and twisted dark comedy The Ripleys, penned by Duane Swierczynski, a writer of non-fiction, fiction and comic books.

Additionally, the company has secured the rights to two novels for series development, Lisa Jewell’s The Family Upstairs and Alison Gaylin’s If I Die Tonight – both in the suspense genre.

The Ledge producer Michael Mailer has teamed with Hank Blumenthal to produce an inspired-by-true-events period drama, The Walk, with Daniel Adams attached to direct from a script he co-wrote with George Powell. The screenplay was originated by Powell, a former drug dealer whom Adams discovered while he was incarcerated. Upon his release, Powell turned to screenwriting and The Walk will mark his first produced script.

The story centers on Boston Irish cop Bill Coughlin as he is faced with his own suppressed racist attitude and fierce social pressure after being assigned to protect black high school students as they are bused into all-white South Boston High during the court-ordered forced integration of the Boston School System in 1974, which resulted in brutal violence and city-wide protests.

Stars like Jason Statham, Gerard Butler, Liam Neeson and Ben Affleck have brought a semblance of stability to an unsettled American Film Market this week.

The boom in streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon along with the emergence of new services from Disney, Apple and Warner Bros. has disrupted the traditional business model for the independent sector.

“Netflix wants your movie early now,” noted Bron Studios exec Anjay Nagpal at Friday’s Afm finance conference. “They don’t want it any more after you couldn’t sell it at festivals.”

Jeffrey Greenstein, president of Millennium Media, said at the event that money offered by streamers has made it tougher to sign name actors such as Butler — who has done a trio of “Fallen” movies for Millennium.

Renée Zellweger will receive the Desert Palm Achievement Award at the 31st annual Palm Springs International Film Festival in January, Psiff announced on Friday.

The Film Awards Gala will take place on January 2 at the Palm Springs Convention Center. Past winners of the award include Olivia Colman, Cate Blanchett, Halle Berry, Sandra Bullock, Saoirse Ronan and Charlize Theron.

In a suit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, Bullock and DeGeneres say that they have been “targeted because of their age, their unimpeachable reputation for honesty and having worked hard at maintaining a healthy and youthful look, which con artists believe will attract and dupe unwitting customers into getting bilked by giving up their credit card information.”

Bullock's character is released from prison after serving time for a violent crime and re-enters a society that refuses to forgive her past. Facing severe judgment from her former friends and peers, her only hope for redemption is finding the estranged younger sister, she was forced to leave behind, reports variety.com.
