Oscar winner John Ridley, co-host of Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast, returns to his native Milwaukee for the latest edition of the pod, recorded live during the 16th Milwaukee Film Festival. He and co-host Matt Carey, documentary editor at Deadline, speak with two filmmakers bringing new work to the festival: Sav Rodgers, director of Chasing Chasing Amy, and Mary Louise Schumacher, director of Out of the Picture.
Rodgers makes his feature documentary debut with Chasing Chasing Amy, a film that examines how Kevin Smith’s 1997 hit Chasing Amy became a lifeline for Rodgers as a queer, trans kid growing up in conservative Kansas, and how the indie drama impacted the culture at large. Smith’s film told the story of a straight man (played by Ben Affleck) falling in love with a gay woman (played by Joey Lauren Adams...

Kevin Smith could have bought the Quick Stop market he made famous in his first film, “Clerks.” But when the opportunity arose, the indie director instead put his hard-earned cash into his childhood movie theater in Atlantic Highlands, N.J., reopening it in 2022 as SModcastle Cinemas.
Now he’s fighting to keep the 103-year-old non-profit theater going, even if “exhibition is in the toilet,” as he likes to say. In other words, local audiences sometimes prefer to watch big hits like “Avatar” in modern multiplexes, and keeping a repertory theater vibrant without the help of a pricey beer and wine license is not for the faint of heart, he has found.
No matter: The “Chasing Amy” director is leveraging his pop culture brand to focus on bringing the New Jersey community classic cult movies, family films, merchandise sales and super-fresh popcorn.

Chicago – In 1997. Filmmaker Kevin Smith released his third film (after “Clerks” and “Mallrats”) entitled “Chasing Amy.” The story, featuring Joey Lauren Adams, is about a lesbian whose fluidly also includes a romantic relationship with a man. Watching this film was a young female born person who was questioning their own identity, and used the film as a touch point for these feelings. Years later, that person is director Sav Rodgers, and he made a documentary about his experiences with the film in coming to self and its complicated history in “Chasing Chasing Amy.”
“Chasing Chasing Amy” is currently on the film festival circuit, and came to Chicago in September of 2023 for the Reeling41 film festival, the Windy City’s International Lbgtq+ cinema celebration. There was a time when Kevin Smith was regarded as being one of the definitive filmmakers of Generation X. His feature directing debut on the shoestring-budgeted 1994 indie hit "Clerks" suggested Smith not only had a firm understanding of the slacker mentality that afflicted so many people in his age bracket, but he was also shrewd enough to be critical of it. The film centers on disgruntled Quick Stop Groceries clerk Dante Hicks (Brian O'Halloran) and those in his immediate vicinity, including his equally-cynical, unmotivated best friend Randal Graves (Jeff Anderson) and the off-beat drug dealers that loiter outside the store: loud-mouthed horny miscreant Jay (Jason Mewes) and his reserved yet secretly wise companion Silent Bob (Smith). As colorful as these characters were, they also felt like real people you could imagine Smith knew growing up on his home turf of New Jersey.

On 1st May 2020, a Ted Talk video went live of Sav Rodgers sharing how 1997’s Chasing Amy saved his adolescent life while growing up queer in Kansas. Film critic Roger Ebert’s description of the film described how it forced a young artist to question all ideas he had about himself, something which is also true of Sav’s journey. This led him to make Chasing Chasing Amy, a documentary about Kevin Smith’s third feature film.
As the video was shared, wider interest was ignited in the documentary Sav mentioned that he was making, leading to Kevin Smith himself reaching out. The writer/director is reflective of his past, offering friendliness while recounting how the film kept his career alive, the real-life inspirations for the story, and the regrets which linger in hindsight.

After five staffers who sought to unionize were laid off, the Outfest Board of Directors announced Thursday that it has named board member Zackery Alexzander Stephens as acting executive director
“It is with great sadness that we have to make layoffs, but these are in no way connected to the staff’s desire to unionize,” a statement shared with TheWrap read. “Staff was notified that the organization had planned for a reduction of the workforce prior to any communication of unionizing.”
A PR rep for Outfest did not comment on a Deadline report that executive director Damien S. Navarro, who has held the post since July 2019, is taking a 45-day leave from the nonprofit organization.
During this year’s “Hot Labor Summer,” several organizations have unionized or sought to form a union, including writers at the MTV series “Ridiculousness” and staffers at Walt Disney Animation.
“Outfest is decidedly pro-union,” the statement continued.

For many, Kevin Smith is a filmmaker who once upon a time made great movies while others have stuck by his side through thick and thin. With the well-reviewed Clerks III wrapping up the story 30 years in the making, it is time we take a look back at one of the most iconic careers in independent film history and we find out just Wtf Happened to Kevin Smith.

Smith has said that seeing his father struggle with his job working at the post office made him vow to never work a job that he hated, but never really thought there was a future for someone like him in the film industry despite his love for movies. Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone have scotched plans to pick up a prestigious honor at Outfest, the Los Angeles Lgbtqia+ film festival, and it’s all down to the actors strike.
The Hollywood couple were to have accepted the James Schamus Ally Award at Outfest’s closing night on Sunday but cancelled because of the SAG-AFTRA walkout. The award, named for the co-founder and former CEO of Focus Features, recognizes McCarthy and Falcone’s support and advocacy for the Lgbtqia+ community.
“We understand that Melissa and Ben are unable to join us for our closing night due to the strike,” Outfest Executive Director Damien Navarro said in a statement. “We will miss them, as our closing night will be a wonderful celebration of our community.”

Admittedly, I did not care for Kevin Smith‘s 1997 romantic comedy-drama film, Chasing Amy, when I first saw it.
While there are elements of the film that I believe are worthy of praise such as the performances, particularly from Joey Lauren Adams, and several smartly-written monologues, overall it is, in my opinion, a very dated, flawed film that does not hold up today. I did not get a lot out of Chasing Amy when I first saw it, and I have rarely, if ever, thought about it since seeing it.
That being said, I completely understand why this film would mean a lot to someone else. I can see how someone could connect with this movie and its characters. I can see how someone could become so inspired by the movie that it not only causes them to pursue their own artistic and creative endeavors but also actively influences their personal life as well.

Sav Rodgers’ documentary feature debut, Chasing Chasing Amy, is at its core a transition story. Not so much about his own transition, though it is addressed in the 95-minute movie examining the cultural and personal impact of the 1997 Kevin Smith-directed Chasing Amy. But the transitory process that is coming of age; being in love; being a fan; and perhaps most significantly, the realization that under its glitz and glamour, Hollywood is not inherently the romantic place it’s sold as onscreen.
“My mom would always say this thing to me when I was a kid, which is, ‘I need you to understand that I am just a person and your parents are just people. We’re not exceptional. We make mistakes,'” Rodgers recalls, while discussing the takeaways of his doc with The Hollywood Reporter during the film’s 2023 Tribeca Festival run.

We all have our problematic faves. Especially if you’ve been watching movies for longer than, say, yesterday. The #MeToo reckoning didn’t just reveal the monsters in Hollywood’s closet, it also made it impossible to ignore the pervasive sexism, misogyny, and power imbalances permeating every aspect of the industry. So pervasive, in fact, that very few projects weren’t touched by the stench. In the case of Kevin Smith, his career is directly tied to Harvey Weinstein’s Miramax, which produced and distributed four of his early films, including one of his biggest hits, “Chasing Amy.”
Released in 1997, “Chasing Amy” followed on the heels of Smith’s debut hit “Clerks” and the sophomoric flop “Mallrats.” The film stars Joey Lauren Adams as an effortlessly cool lesbian and Ben Affleck as the persistent straight man who falls in love with (and eventually seduces) her. With the unfortunate history of portrayals of many marginalized communities, the first films to kick open the door to mainstream representation were often made outside of a community, resulting in work that is deemed problematic in today’s environment. Chasing Amy being one such example: though the third film from Kevin Smith met some controversy, it did not have picket lines that his fourth, Dogma, would invite.
For Sav Rodgers, a kid growing up in Kanas who adored Ben Affleck, Chasing Amy became a gateway into understanding themselves and, ultimately, who they wanted to become. In his highly personal feature film debut, the trans filmmaker expands upon his viral Ted talk, unpacking multiple problems with Chasing Amy and the ’90s independent film scene. It was a time of gatekeepers that often, intentionally or not, suppressed mainstream LGBTQ films made from within the community, bankrolling and elevating voices like Kevin Smith––in his sheer provocation,...

This month sees the theatrical release of the documentary about Midnight Cowboy that made the festival circuit last year. At the same time, a new doc about another controversial gay-themed movie has its world premiere at Tribeca. Chasing Chasing Amy will also close next month’s Outfest in Los Angeles. This picture has a backstory as fascinating as the tale told in Kevin Smith’s 1997 romantic dramedy, Chasing Amy.

“Do you understand why I love this movie so much?” asks Sav Rodgers, the director whose adoration of Kevin Smith’s 1997 rom-com Chasing Amy has led them on a pilgrimage to parts of New Jersey so ungentrified that, 25 years later, they’re — seriously — almost all still there. “No,” says Shana Lory. Which is a bit of a shock, given that she was the casting director.

In 1997, director Kevin Smith told a story about a comic book artist, played by Ben Affleck, who falls in love with a lesbian, played by Joey Lauren Adams. The film, “Chasing Amy,” became a cultural touchstone for indie filmmaking as well as LGBTQ+ representation at the time. But in the 26 years since its release the movie has come under scrutiny by Lgtbq+ critics and audiences and inspired the new documentary “Chasing Chasing Amy.”
For filmmaker Sav Rodgers, “Chasing Amy,” for better or for worse, was the film that not only sparked his desire to be a filmmaker but made him feel seen in a time when representation was so meager. “I got older and I went to college, and people ask you when you go to film school, ‘Hey, what’s your favorite movie,'” Rodgers told TheWrap. “I would get in these spaces with other queer people specifically where...

The first clip has been unveiled for “Chasing Chasing Amy,” which will have its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival.
In the feature documentary, Sav Rodgers takes a journey of self-discovery while making a documentary about Kevin Smith’s 1997 film “Chasing Amy” and its polarizing reputation among LGBTQ+ people. The film explores the transformational impact of the rom-com on a 12-year-old queer kid from Kansas, coming of age and to terms with his identity. For young Sav Rodgers, the cult classic became a life raft. As Rodgers examines the film and its making as a cornerstone of LGBTQ+ cinema, he finds himself at a complicated crossroads.
Participants in the film include Smith, “Go Fish” screenwriter Guinevere Turner, “Fire Island” director Andrew Ahn and “Chasing Amy” stars Joey Lauren Adams and Scott Mosier.

Movies mean different things to different people. Predicting which films will strike a chord for any individual is impossible, and some movies become more personal than others. For Sav Rodgers, Kevin Smith‘s Chasing Amy helped him discover truths he could not define. In today’s Chasing Chasing Amy trailer, we find Rodgers going on a journey of self-discovery for a documentary focusing on Smith’s confrontational LGBTQ+ romance film.

‘Chasing Amy’ Doc Examines the Legacy of Kevin Smith’s Polarizing 1997 Film in First Trailer (Video)
Sometimes the cultural reevaluation of a film can go both ways: For as much as viewers can say “Yes, this movie is actually good,” they can also say “We see now it’s incredibly problematic.” Such is the case with director Kevin Smith’s 1997 feature “Chasing Amy,” which tells the story of a straight man (played by Ben Affleck) falling in love with a lesbian (played by Joey Lauren Adams).
As director Sav Rodgers’ documentary, “Chasing Chasing Amy” explores in its first trailer: Can one enjoy a film that falls into stereotypes as often as it breaks them?
“Chasing Chasing Amy” isn’t just a look at the Smith film but how it influenced Rodgers own journey of self-discovery. By looking at the film’s polarizing depiction of sexuality and gender, both in the wake of its initial release and today, Rodgers looks at how his own life has been altered.

“Where were you in ’76?” The newest entrant in Criterion’s 4K disc club is Richard Linklater’s rowdy but affectionate ode to high school nostalgia, Texas-style. It’s a Bicentennial summer update of American Graffiti and in just 14 years the entire face of America has changed. Youth idealism is dead and the main rule is to avoid plans made by parents. Linklater’s graduation night sticks with kids free to roam on their own and have a wild time. He has a terrific way with performances that include a string of memorable faces that became much better-known, plus a couple of future stars.

Outlander may not return for Season 7 until this summer, but that doesn’t mean the stars aren’t hard at work getting it ready for fans. While shooting continues on the series, star Lauren Lyle is made a splash with her other TV role in BritBox‘s Karen Pirie adaptation. Keeping mum about her potential return as Marsali Fraser in Outlander, Lyle admits, “I don’t know what I’m allowed to say actually.” (Credit: Starz) “If you were to read the books, then I think you know more about what is to come or what is not to come,” the actress hints. While she couldn’t say more than the fact that there are “exciting things in the pipeline,” she was able to comment on the recent Outlander spinoff that’s currently in development. Outlander: Blood of My Blood will focus on the love story between Jamie Fraser’s...

Starz announced yesterday that Outlander has been renewed one last time. The beloved time-traveling period drama will end with season 8. While fans may not be ready yet to say goodbye to the Frasier family, there are a lot of positives that can be found in this announcement.
First of all, no matter what happens during season 7 of Outlander, which will air this summer, the writers will have the opportunity to bring closure to the major and minor plots in season 8. Not all of the storylines from My Heart’s Own Blood, Go Tell The Bees and future novels from Diana Gabaldon’s series may make it into the final season but the novels will always be there for fans to revisit and take comfort in.

Good news for the tourist industry in St Andrew’s, the photogenic Scottish university town previously made famous by a prince and an amateur catwalk model named Kate Middleton. Now it’s got its very own eponymous TV detective series – Karen Pirie. Just like in Bath, Oxford, Bristol, Jersey, Shetland and countless other real and semi-fictional picturesque locations with infeasibly high rates of homicide, soon visitors from all over the world will be able to come and see where celebrated decapitations, drownings and poisonings didn’t actually take place.
The first killing in this new venture splats onto our screens with the disembowelling of a barmaid, her body dumped in the grounds of the cathedral – about as shocking a femicide conceivable. Yet, by contrast, and unusually for a regional detective series, there is nothing unusual or idiosyncratic about its hero. The prosaically named Karen Pirie (Lauren Lyle) is a young...

BritBox is gearing up for its next detective drama as the hub for top-tier British entertainment welcomes Karen Pirie to its fall lineup. The ITV commission stars Outlander‘s Lauren Lyle as the titular detective who is based on the character from Val McDermid’s best-selling novels. Ahead of the show’s upcoming debut, BritBox unveiled a first look during their TCA presentation. Best known for playing headstrong Marsali Fraser in Starz‘s hit, Lyle is unrecognizable as the rough-around-the-edges detective tasked with solving a cold case from the ’90s. And though it may be a far cry from the 18th-century world where Outlander is set, that fire behind Marsali can be found in Karen Pirie as well. “It was a part that I felt suited me quite well,” Lyle recalls about her first time hearing of the role. “I loved the script. It was so dynamic, so funny, and so dark.
