“Ted Lasso,” “Yellowjackets,” “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and Renee Rapp were just a few of the winners from the 35th annual GLAAD Media Awards, held Thursday night at the Beverly Hilton.
It’s the first of two dual ceremonies — the second happens May 11 in New York City — but we’ll go out on a limb and say it’s the best one because it’s first, and in Los Angeles (just kidding). And prior to the awards actually being handed out, the stars were out in force with some absolutely iconic looks for the Red Carpet.
Among them were Sydney Sweeney, Wayne Brady, Chlöe, Jason Sudeikis, Niecy Nash, and that’s barely a sample. Read on and see some of the best outfits and fiercest attitudes from the GLAAD Media Awards 2024.

Year 2023 will be remembered in Hollywood for various phenomena — the strikes, Barbenheimer — but for Latinos, 2023 was the year that saw a relatively significant number of movies and TV releases from and about their community, in a variety of genres. With actors and writers spending about half of last year unable to promote their projects, the atmosphere at Neuehouse in Hollywood was all the more electric last Friday evening as a who’s who of Latin entertainment, media, sports and politics came together to toast the excellence they saw on the big and small screens.
The event, La Cena Los Angeles, was an expansion of the intimate multi-city La Cena dinner series started last year by culture and impact consultant Ruben Garcia, formerly co-head of cultural business strategy at CAA, to cultivate community among impactful Latino figures across disciplines.

Amazon has axed a trio of scripted series from its Prime Video service: The Horror of Dolores Roach, Harlan Coben’s Shelter, and With Love are all ending.
The Horror of Dolores Roach and Harlan Coben’s Shelter ran for one season, while With Love is ending after two seasons.
They are the latest cancelations at the streamer over the last few months following shows such as The Peripheral and A League of Their Own, which had both been renewed before those decisions were reversed.

The WGA and SAG-AFTRA teamed up for its first bicoastal picket in Los Angeles and New York on Friday, and Latino Hollywood showed up in droves.
At Warner Bros. in Los Angeles, more than 2,000 actors, writers and supporters hit the sidewalks as temperatures hit the high-80s. Salsa and Bachata music blasted through the speakers near Gates 2 and 3 as patient strike captains including Vida star Chelsea Rendon, kept everyone moving safely. In the 20 years since the premiere of “George Lopez,” the groundbreaking Latino-led series has never been off the air, living on in syndication and through NBC’s new series “Lopez vs. Lopez,” which follows along in its tradition while also forging its own path.
In the freshman comedy’s Christmas-themed episode, Mayan and George Lopez (who play versions of themselves as a daughter-father duo) excavate familial conflicts and generational divides, navigating and healing their relationship as parent and adult child. With the backdrop of Nochebuena, there’s also a “reunion” within the extended family, portrayed by “George Lopez” OGs Constance Marie, Valente Rodriguez, Belita Moreno and Luis Armand Garcia, who guest star.
“We would have loved to have a reboot, but there are just some things internally that just don’t make it possible,” Mayan Lopez told TheWrap. “And so in a way, we were like, ‘We want to pay...

What does it take to finally get your divorced parents to spend Christmas Eve together as a family? If you’re Mayan (Mayan Lopez) in “Lopez vs. Lopez Christmas” just some deception inspired by “The Gift of the Magi.” In order to bring her combative parents together for Nochebuena in the Lopez vs. Lopez holiday episode, Mayan assures her dad George (George Lopez) and mom Rosie (Selenis Leyva) that they’re each giving up what they love most for the evening: George won’t drink the beer that Rosie believes he overly imbibes; Christmas fanatic Rosie won’t wear the crown that annoys George. But seeing how the celebration has gone on without him for the last 10 years may drive Pop to the bottle. “Holidays bring joy, but they also bring up all kinds of emotions,” Mayan tells us. And guests! The George Lopez Show alums Constance Marie, Valente Rodriguez,...

Mayan Lopez, star of “Lopez vs. Lopez” and daughter to comedian George Lopez, has opened up about following in her father’s showbiz footsteps. Speaking at NBC’s virtual summer press tour panel at the Television Critics Association, she said that growing up behind the scenes of “The George Lopez Show” is where she first “fell in love” with acting and creating – but she’s still had to pay her dues and put in the work.
“People always think that I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth, like no…. It's for good reason that "The George Lopez Show" has become so iconic in the 20 years since it first premiered. It has become a shared piece of pop culture, conjuring nostalgia and pride. It aired on network TV for six seasons and drew in millions, which is still almost unheard of for a show with a predominately Latinx cast dealing with Latinx issues. We're the generation of the cancelation after all.

A sizable portion of that audience was Latinx - around 14 percent, at the time. "The George Lopez Show" is definitely for us - with in-jokes stemming from cross-national teasing, the occasional Spanish, and nods to la cultura like our love of baseball along with some of the real struggles that come with being Latinx and living in the States. More than 20 years later, "Tortilla Soup" has become a Latinx classic. It's beloved for its warm and funny portrayal of a Mexican-American family in Los Angeles - with nary a drug dealer or maid in sight. The Naranjos are solidly middle class, own businesses, and make real-estate deals, and their troubles are the basic human ones - how to find love, fulfillment, and meaning. Héctor Elizondo's tough and loving patriarch, Martin, anchors the film, a widowed chef with three grown daughters. He shows his love through food - with compulsory and eventful family dinners. This positive representation of our community is furthered by there being so many daughters. In the Naranjo women, we see a wide range of Latinas: there's the religious one, the ambitious one, and the free-spirited one. And over the course of the film, they all buck those types, showing Latinas as more than any single...

After dealing with her own mental health, Kate Purdy decided to channel her experiences through animation for Amazon Prime’s Undone. Along with fellow co-creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg, Purdy created a story of generational trauma and redemption.
Undone follows Alma (Rosa Salazar), a woman who survives a near-fatal car crash and discovers she has the ability to manipulate time and reality. Season 1 focuses on Alma trying to find the truth behind her father Jacob’s (Bob Odenkirk) death and save him. Season 2 takes place in a new timeline after she succeeds, and now finds that her sister Becca (Angelique Cabral) has a similar ability. Together they try to help their mother Camila (Constance Marie) who is hiding something from them.

Rotoscope animation is a rare technique on television, and a rare one to see used as well as it is in Prime Video’s “Undone.”
Created by Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the series is shot in live-action on green screen soundstages, with the footage animated by the companies Submarine and Minnow Mountain. The result is a formally inventive series that uses dreamlike, hazy animated imagery to tell the slippery story of Alma (Rosa Salazar) as she confronts her memories of her father’s death by leaping through time to prevent it.
For the show’s recent second season, the animation of “Undone” gets even more ambitious, as the narrative sees Alma and her sister Becca (Angelique Cabral) travel into the memories and traumatic pasts of their father Jacob (Bob Odenkirk), mother Camila (Constance Marie) and eventually their grandmother Geraldine (Holley Fain). The further they travel through time, the more the animation distorts reality,...

When talking to the cast and crew behind Amazon Prime Video’s trippy series Undone, the last thing you want to do is ask about the rotoscoping of it all too early.
First deployed in the early 20th century, rotoscoping is an animation technique in which artists paint over live-action footage to make the movement of animated characters appear more realistic. Deployed strategically and sparingly in films like Cinderella and Mary Poppins, director Richard Linklater revolutionized the concept in the modern era with fully digital rotoscoped feature films like Waking Life in 2001 and A Scanner Darkly in 2006.
Per Prime Video, Undone is first TV series to fully utilize the technique, so naturally you’d want to ask about it when stars Rosa Salazar, Angelique Cabral, Constance Marie; creator Kate Purdy; and director Hisko Hulsings sit down at Den of Geek video studio during SXSW to discuss the upcoming second season of the show.

With its second season out on April 29, Amazon's "Undone" is back following Rosa Salazar's Alma as she time travels, addresses her own inadequacies, and tries to heal her family. She's not alone thanks to a largely Latina support system that includes her sister Becca (Angelique Cabral) and her mother, Camila (Constance Marie). This season, we also meet her abuelita Fabiola (Renée Victor) and tia Monse (Ana Ortiz), who also play significant roles in her life.
This season addresses what having so many Latinas in one cast does, which is proves there's no one way of being Latina. Let's start with what side of the border they're on. In the new season, Alma and Becca leave their home in San Antonio to visit their abuela and extended family in Mexico. Along the way, we learn it was their mom who crossed and started an Eeuu-based family. So in "Undone," we...

Season 1 of “Undone” pulled off the magic trick of being grounded and fantastical all at once. It showed that a touching father-daughter story can still happen even as both of them are tumbling through different forms of reality and a jumble of stitched-together timelines. The Prime Video series’ co-creator and writer Kate Purdy helped to steer the story of Alma Winograd-Diaz (Rosa Salazar), a young woman recovering from a car accident who becomes convinced that she can communicate with the spirit of her dead father Jacob (Bob Odenkirk).
That initial germ of an idea spread over the course of the show’s first eight episodes, expanding along with Alma’s consciousness. With Alma perceiving glitches in time and revisiting her own memories as easily as if she were walking into an adjoining room, the details she found on each new go-round with the past led her closer to some uncomfortable truths about her family.

Let's face it, love and the holidays just go together. Why else would we have all these cheesy Christmas romance films? There's just something about winter nights and sparkling lights that screams "go cozy up with someone you love." But unfortunately, when looking at the narrative of romance and Christmas, there are going to be some problems. Think The Holiday or Love Actually, which feature largely (or entirely) white casts and a straight, Anglo definition of love. In films like these, we find men and women, alone in their individualism, trying to find someone to make a new, tiny nuclear family with (and often repeating tired gender dynamics along the way).
Thankfully, that's starting to change. This year, we saw not one but two made-for-tv Christmas movies staring Latina lovers - Lifetime's Holiday in Santa Fe and CBS's A Christmas Proposal. We also got more LGBTQ+ content, thanks in...

How Sitting in Her Feelings Led Gloria Calderón Kellett to Create Her Second Dream Show, ‘With Love’
Before Gloria Calderón Kellett landed on developing “With Love,” a holiday rom-com, as the first title under her overall deal with Amazon Studios, she took six months to “sit in my feelings to figure out what was the new thing that I wanted to say,” the writer-producer-director recalls.
Calderón Kellett had spent the last few years on a roller coaster of emotions with her multicamera reboot of “One Day at a Time,” which first launched on Netflix in 2017, only to be canceled by the streamer after three seasons. Fledgling cabler Pop TV picked up the show for a fourth season, which ended up truncated after the Covid-19 pandemic put a halt on production, and that network canceled the show months later (and has since gotten out of the originals game altogether). For all that complicated business, though, she was still creatively fulfilled by the art she was making on the show.

After closing the book on her splendid revival of “One Day At a Time,” creator Gloria Calderón Kellett is back with another series focused on new hilarious family. “With Love” holds commonalities with “One Day,” predominately in that both are about an intergenerational Latino family, but the Amazon Prime Video series finds even richer and deeper avenues to explore.
Each episode takes place on a different holiday across one year in the lives of the Diaz clan. Lily and her brother Jorge are approaching relationships from opposite sides. Starting on Christmas Eve, Lily has broken up with her boyfriend (and then failed to get him back), while Jorge is embarking on a new romance with the level-headed Henry (Vincent Rodriguez III). As each holiday approaches, we see the pair embark on a fresh set of challenges that, coupled with other events their relatives are going through, help inform their emerging identities.

The season details almost a full year of their lives,...
