- American cinematographer, formerly a forest ranger. In Hollywood from 1914, he had a reputation as an adept outdoor cameraman, employed particularly on second-feature westerns, often for Republic or such Poverty Row outfits as Paul Malvern's Lone Star. Having labored under shoestring budgets for most of his career, Stout finally hit the big time as director of photography on John Wayne's A-grade feature The High and the Mighty (1954). The pressure might have been too much for him, as he suffered a heart attack the following year and was forced to retire.
