From Thursday through Saturday last week, 775,000 fans crowded into downtown Detroit for the 2024 NFL draft, setting a new attendance record for the event in the process. Football took center stage, but music was very much along for the ride, as Detroit’s rock and hip-hop royalty rubbed elbows with its sports legends, in some cases literally. Detroit Lions superfan Eminem, who’s also been known to rap a bit, joined NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell onstage to open the draft on Thursday night, while Lions legend Barry Sanders hung out with Bob Seger and Big Sean,...

DJ Mark The 45 King, best known as the producer of classic hits by Eminem, Jay-Z, and Queen Latifah, has died at 62 years old.
The news was first shared on Thursday, October 19th by DJ Premier, who posted a statement on Instagram that the Bronx native had died in the morning — just days after celebrating his birthday. No cause of death has been revealed, but Premier mentioned that The 45 King had recently been in the hospital.
Born Mark Howard James, The 45 King helped form Flavor Unit — a group of rappers and DJs from New York City and Northern New Jersey which counted Queen Latifah, Chill Rob G, Lakim Shabazz, and Apache among its members — in the late 1980s. Chromeo are back with their third single of 2023, a high-energy electro-pop song entitled “(I Don’t Need A) New Girl.” Listen to the track below.
With an upbeat bass line taking center stage, the arrangement on “(I Don’t Need A) New Girl” shows off Chromeo’s sound at its best. Layers of synths, funky electric guitar stabs, and a disco-esque beat all come together beneath the surface, elevating the duo’s vocals. Add in the lyrics celebrating a newfound love that’s here to say, and the single shapes up to be a pretty solid summer indie pop bop.
Chromeo first teased the release on social media. Last week, they shared a snippet of the single on TikTok along with the question, “Do we drop??” Last Friday (June 23rd), they shared the single artwork on Instagram “Stayed up all night, did the artwork,” the caption read. “You ask, we deliver.

Chromeo have dropped their latest single, “Replacements,” featuring synthpop singer La Roux. It’s a nod back to the heyday of indie sleaze, and it’s sure to make you dance. Stream it below.
The Canadian duo — made up of David “Dave 1” Macklovitch and Patrick “P-Thugg” Gemayel — gave a taste of the new song live during their recent Coachella sets, bringing out La Roux as a surprise special guest on stage. Like taking a time machine back to the aughts, Chromeo and La Roux also boosted their set with electro-funk remixes of her biggest hits from the era, “Bulletproof” and “In for the Kill.”
“For our second single, we wanted to take a 90-degree turn,” Dave 1 said in a press release for the track. “The groove stays, but whereas ‘Words with You’ feels loose and organic, here we let the keyboards and drum machines do the talking.”

Ric Wilson, Chromeo, and A-Trak have cooked up a new project called Clusterfunk. Stream it below via Apple Music or Spotify.
Canadian DJ A-Trak introduced his fellow Montreal natives Chromeo to Ric Wilson’s music in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic. Inspired by the social movements of the moment, the artists convened with the Chicago rapper in California to forge a project steeped in socialism and communism, set to a mix of funk, soul, and hip-hop. King Louie, Felicia Douglass of Dirty Projectors, Stic.Man of Dead Prez, Kiéla Adira, and Mariame Kaba feature on the project.
Title track “Clusterfunk” alternates between stark verses from Wilson — who poses questions like “If it wasn’t in the bible, would you call it sin?/ If Dylan Roof wasn’t white, would they let him live?” — before Chromeo de-escalate his moral questioning with a classic sing-along chorus, crooning, “Welcome to the...

Flatbush Zombies’ Meechy Darko has teamed up with Freddie Gibbs and DJ/producer A-Trak for a new song, “On God,” off his upcoming solo debut, Gothic Luxury.
Produced by Jay Versace and Dot Da Genius, “On God” begins with a grandiose flourish but settles into a groove that’s still propulsive, but also subtle and unsettling in its own ways. Meechy Darko and Freddie Gibbs trade sprawling, heavy, and brutally honest verses on the five-minute track, while A-Trak arrives at the end to show off his signature scratching skills.

Progressive house mainstay Sander Van Doorn has just released a new track in the form of “Oh, Amazing Bass.” With support from the likes of Tiësto, Oliver Heldens and A-Trak, the song is sure to find its way into its fair share of DJ sets over the remainder of the festival season.
A “Greyhound”-esque buildup leads into a gradual progression with a subtle uplift before retro synth work cues an understated bass drop. Van Doorn clearly made groove his priority with this track, as the absence of any real fist pumping-inducing sections allows the listener to dissect some of its novel sound design.
While I like the track better than his formulaic big room house bangers like “Phoenix” and “Rage,” part of me wishes he stuck to the progressive, world music-inspired stylings of his most recent track, “Ori Tali Ma.” Also, naming the track “Oh, Amazing Bass” is about...

Internet rapper extraordinaire Danny Brown is spending a lot of time listening to "Old," his forthcoming album on Fool's Gold. We haven't heard it, and few people have -- the project is supposed to be released on an as-of-yet unannounced day next month. So for now, all we can do is listen to Brown talk about it.
"It's pretty much all done," the Detroit native says from his house on a rare day off from performing. "I just have anxiety -- I'm just nervous about it."
But what will it sound like? "I can't really say what it focuses on, because I don't really know what it focuses on," Brown says earnestly. "I didn't focus on anything -- I just let it write itself. The more I listen to it, it's just like, 'Damn!' It's almost like I didn't really do this shit. It came from a higher power,...

After being profiled as nothing more than a button masher who can't stand other DJs who plays songs he likes, Swedish producer Avicii took aim at GQ and writer Jessica Pressler in a lengthy Twitter post. Among the charges he levies: That Pressler wrote an article with "little truth" and "subjectively twisted" his quotes to fit her purposes.
"The problem was that a journalist that knows nothing of electronic music was sent on the road with me for a couple of days and then tried piecing together what it's all about," Avicii, whose real name is Tim Bergling posted. "She failed miserably."
Pressler followed Bergling and his staff around to a number of shows, including an extended New Year's Eve club gig in Las Vegas. Her descriptions of dance music fans are less than flattering; Festival attendees are described as "California girls in itty-bitty bikinis, sunburned cubicle jockeys, belching frat boys in coral necklaces,...

Converse tapped three of music's most buzzy artists for their new campaign track. "Warrior" features disco house producer and Fools Gold Records boss A-Trak, Foster the People frontman Mark Foster and indie it-girl and chanteuse Kimbra.
If you're familiar with the artists, the song (available for download here) sounds exactly how you'd expect. The track could easily fit at home on a new Foster the People album, as Foster's style seems to have dominated the threesome a bit (which isn't a bad thing!). The upbeat song adds Kimbra's smooth vocals and A-Trak's stabby synths to Foster the People-esque claps and vocal accents for an all-around good time.
Converse has also released the video for the song, which we've included below. In the visuals for the track, Foster and A-Trak star as reluctant wrestlers (who end up needing a little help from Kimbra).

On a July night, the ground at New York's always-crowded, never-clean Webster Hall was quite literally shaking under the bass pouring out of the DJ's booth and its surrounding speakers.
Feel-good house bangers like Swedish House Mafia's "Save the World" and infectious jingles like Afrojack's "Take Over Control" thumped through the space. The crowd, which ranged from Williamsburg hipsters with glow sticks to over-tanned men in tank tops, obligingly rode the highs and lows, fist pumping their way through the night. There was, as anyone who has attended an electronic music show can attest, a certain harmony that isn't found at concerts of many other genres.
Then suddenly, but somehow not surprisingly at all, everyone was dancing to Britney Spears.
The DJ played two of Spears' hits, "Till the World Ends" (which features both lyrics and vocal hiccups that are almost uncomfortably similar to "Save the World") and "Hold It Against Me.
