Thanks to the insightful writing of “Soul” co-director Kemp Powers (who also wrote the Oscar-nominated “One Night in Miami”), the barbershop scene is the most important moment in Pixar’s first Black-led feature. It introduces the community that the barbershop provides, and serves as the turning point for jazz pianist Joe (Jamie Foxx) to discover his true purpose in life.
“Joe is a Black man in New York, and part of your time you go through what I call ‘authentic Black spaces,’ where you’re around other people like yourself,” Powers said. “The barbershop scene came from that, and a desire, quite honestly, to see Black hair. When giving notes on the scene about Joe getting a suit from his mom, I also mentioned that Joe needs to get a haircut. Folks said that wasn’t as important as him getting a suit, and I begged to differ. For Joe,...

Yesterday's sale of author Michael Crichton's art collection netted a whopping $93.3 million, setting a new record for a Jasper Johns artwork (as we predicted on Monday). The writer, who died last year and was a longtime friend of Johns, had bought the iconic "Flag, 1960-1966" from the artist almost 40 years ago. Auctioneer Christie's International brought the gavel down on the Stars and Stripes artwork for $28.6 million, busting the previous record for a painting by Johns by over $11 million. The rest of the author's collection sold above estimates as well.
The gallery where the auction was held, on the second floor of Chrisite's Rockefeller Center headquarters, was jammed with high rollers. A clutch of Upper East Side champagne blondes hung on men with Gordon Gekko-like slicked back hair in the equivalent of the orchestra seats. In the back, a pair of artfully nipped and tucked women, dripping with diamond bracelets and Louis Vuitton leather goods,...

Hey there Tossers! I’ve got a bundle of news for us. This time around it’s for you Dead Space 2 fans out there. EA’s Visceral Games have announced and hinted at a few things over the past month that deserve another look through. A short trailer about Dead Space 2 was recently released from EA. You can easily find it on any video site on the web. (Though I doubt it would be on any of the more risque’ sites.) Or I could just give you the link here. It focuses heavily on ink blots based around images of necromorphs, as well as hinting at the Issac Clarke’s crumbling sanity. (The protagonist from the first Dead Space for all you unknowing heathens out there.) Snippets of gameplay is flashed throughout, teasingly showing brand new monsters to eviscerate. It ends with Issac donning his new self-folding helmet and looking pretty badass.
