Robert here with another installment of my Modern Maestros series. This week one of America's best directors.
Maestro: Paul Thomas Anderson
Known For: Movies about unique individuals and takes on modern Americana.
Influences: A little bit from everywhere but first and foremost it’s all about Altman
Masterpieces: You could pick any film or films. For me it’s Magnolia and There Will Be Blood
Disasters: zero
Better than you remember: I know some people who aren’t enamored with Punch Drunk Love. They should be.
Awards: Nominated for five Oscars. Best Director in Berlin and Cannes.
Box Office: 40 million for There Will Be Blood. Who says Oscar nominations don’t help?
Favorite Actor: Philip Seymour Hoffman appears in all of his films but for the most recent.
A lot of movies are about outsiders. If most films were about normal people leading normal lives, well, they wouldn’t be.

Every time we get to do another story on Nimrod Antal's semi-reboot of the Predator franchise, Predators, which is being produced by Robert Rodriguez, we get a little more excited. If only because neither Paul Anderson nor the dark duo of the Brothers Strause have anything to do with it. Ready for a quick look at where our favorite hunters call home?
Texas' Kngb News reports today that Troublemaker Studios recently used Canyon Lake Gorge in Texas as a backdrop for Predators, adding that the location will be used as a portion of the Predators' home planet in 20th Century Fox's Predator reboot of sorts that will be arriving in theaters July 9th, 2010.
"Specifically, they went to a spot that 10 years ago didn’t exist, but after the flood of 2001, when water went over the spillway at Canyon Lake, a huge gorge was cut out of the landscape, and...

Let's be honest. John C. Reilly isn't exactly the first person you would think of when "vampire" comes to mind. Yet, here he is, starring in Cirque Du Freak , director Paul Weitz's adaptation of the first three novels in author Darren Shan's series. Surprisingly enough, he pulls it off as Larten Crepsley, in spite of that wild hair, not to mention everyone's current perception of Reilly being a comedy actor ( Walk Hard , Step Brothers ). However, if you trace his career, he has always been one to throw us off guard, from his early days in Brian De Palma's Casualties of War to Dolores Claiborne , Paul Anderson's Boogie Nights and Magnolia , Chicago and Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York and The Aviator . This month, he's a 220-year-old bloodsucker who...

The first thing I did after watching the trailer for James Cameron's Avatar was to look for more background info to fully grasp what it's all about. I'm already impressed with what I saw and what contains below impressed me even more:
In 1994, director James Cameron wrote an 80-page scriptment for Avatar. Cameron said his inspiration was "every single science fiction book I read as a kid", and that he was particularly striving to update the style of Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter series. Cameron saw his story as being about how advanced civilizations supplant indigenous cultures, in either actively genocidal or more unpremeditated ways, and was influenced by the story of Pocahontas. In Avatar, humanity extends that practice to entire planets. The premise of a paralyzed man whose mind is remotely controlling an alien body is very similar to Paul Anderson's 1957 short story "Call me Joe." In...

Nick Love (Outlaw, The Business, The Football Factory) revisits Alan Clarke's (Scum, Made in Britain , Rita, Sue and Bob Too!) seminal late 80's TV movie about the violent casual firms that warred on and off the terraces of British football clubs. Love's new film tentatively titled "the firm 1984" is set some years earlier than Clarkes opus and revolves around a different character. Dom, a young wannabe football casual, who get drawn into the charismatic but dangerous world of the firm's top boy, Bex. Accepted for the fast mouth and sense of humor, Dom soon becomes one of the boys. But as Bex and his gang clash with rival firms across the country and the violence spirals out of control, Dom realises he wants out – until he learns it’s not that easy to simply walk away.

It's the return of the "Unjustly Forgotten Horror Movie of the Day", our semi-daily feature spotlighting what the title says -- out of print, forgotten horror films that deserve to be seen and heard! This Roger Corman-produced "Alien" rip off has the distinct honor of serving as inspiration for Paul Anderson's less-than-excellent-but-still-decent "Event Horizon." It's also the only film to feature Erin Moran (Joanie of "Joanie Loves Chachi") having her head explode. It features the only worm rape scene, involving actress Taaffe O'Connell. That scene alone -- which rumor has it was directed by James Cameron -- has given the movie a well deserved cult following. The plot is pretty basic horror/sci-fi fare: As a lone spaceship proceeds on its long voyage across space, the crew are surprised to encounter a strange pyramid form. Surprise turns to horror as one by one, they discover that their darkest...

Milla Jovovich worked like "a crazy alien" to lose her baby weight. The model-and-actress - who has 16-month-old daughter Ever Gabo with her fiance Paul Anderson - put on 70 lbs while pregnant and admits she found it hard to get back into shape.

Milla enlisted the help of renowned Hollywood trainer Harley Pasternak to shed the weight, but admits she found the strict diet plan tough.
The 33-year-old beauty added to Fox News: "It's been a lot of work and I've been working with Harley Pasternak and his 5-Factor program, they actually have diet food sent to my house.

For this week’s edition of the Twitch Video Salute we welcome special guest saluter Adam Mason, director of The Devil’s Chair, Blood River and the upcoming Luster.]
I was wondering what to do when Todd asked me to contribute to this… and my initial urge was to do something a bit ‘zany’ and out there and show off how much I know about Russian cinema or something. My favorite Tarkovsky moments for example. Instead I decided to keep it simple and draw up a list of what I consider to be the classics….. the genre movies I really love. I have a love / hate relationship with horror movies generally. Love in the sense that most of my favorite movies are horrors, hate in the sense that most of my least favorite movies are also horrors!
I would probably say that this list pretty much mirrors my overall movie top ten.
