Fresh off the success of “Elvis,” Baz Luhrmann announced today that he will reimagine his 2008 film “Australia” into a six-part Hulu series called “Faraway Downs.”
The extended cut, which will debut in winter of this year, will feature new footage from the movie, which stars Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman. It will also include a new ending and updated soundtrack.
“Faraway Downs” takes its title from the Australian cattle ranch that Kidman’s Lady Sarah Ashley inherits after the death of her husband in the film. After cattle barons devise a plan to steal her land, she hires a rugged cattle drover (Jackman) for protection. The romantic adventure film is set during World War II and told through the perspective of a bi-racial indigenous child named Nullah (Brandon Walters), a victim of the government’s family separation policy now known as the “Stolen Generations.”

Harry Devert was living his dream. Last December, the 32-year-old New Yorker quit his job, packed his bags and took off on an adventure by motorcycle, chronicling his exploits through the Americas on A New Yorker Travels, his blog. "I don't think there's anyone who, on their deathbed, every lamented pursuing a passion, pursuing a dream," he wrote last month. "In fact, I imagine in fact it would be quite the opposite." Then, just days after that post, on Jan. 25, he vanished without a trace after checking out of a bed and breakfast in Michoacán, Mexico. He went missing in...

The 'Gossip Girl' star has been a huge fan of paintings ever since her brother Eric encouraged her to start her own collection and revealed she now always buys new art when she is away on location filming.
She explained to Artlog: "My brother Eric thought it was important for me to collect art and have an awareness of it at a young age. He took me to an exhibit by Sage Vaughn at a warehouse in downtown Los Angeles and bought me my first piece. That experience ignited a hunger to see more art and collect it however I could.
"I always try to buy things when I travel as a reminder of the trip and time spent in a city. When I was working in New Orleans for four months, I bought a chair and a painting of Audrey Hepburn by local artist Sarah Ashley Longshore.

Back in July, we heard of a local Asheville, North Carolina artist whose work was cherry-picked by Bill Condon for inclusion in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, and now another similar story has arisen.
Sarah Ashley Longshore of New Orleans blogged about the fact that one of her paintings, seen left, was chosen for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.
Here's what she wrote:
Well Well Well! Finally!!!!!!! There is so much filming being done here in New Orleans these days. There are movie stars and set decorators everywhere. My art has been used for lots and lots of films. Big films but Never has my artwork made it to the Big theatrical trailer!!!! Here is a still from the trailer with Kristen Stewart standing in front of my painting! I have this painting in my personal collection! I have always been Obsessed with luna moths. I used to collect them at my lakehome.

Albert Ferreira Singer Sara Evans has a lot on her plate. As a mom to seven children — three of her own and four belonging to husband Jay Barker — the country star is responsible for making lunches, packing backpacks and drying tears — all while recording albums and writing books!
Sara, 38, recently took time out of her busy schedule to talk to CBB about her controlled chaos, as well as her partnership with Libby’s, encouraging families to “get back to the table” and enjoy home-cooked dinners together.
CBB: How is the family?
Sara: We are all wonderful, and crazy busy! In total, we have Andrew, 11, Avery, 10, Braxton, 9, twins Harrison and Sarah Ashley, 8, Olivia, 6, and Audrey, 4. All the kids are in school now. We have three boys playing tackle football, one daughter playing soccer, and one playing tennis. We don’t make it to all their games/matches. Jay is coaching one of his sons,...

Last week we went back to nature for our gadget spot with the stock saddle as used by Nicole Kidman’s Lady Sarah Ashley in epic romance Australia. This time round we’re keeping things a little more traditionally techie with a sophisticated camera as clocked in new rom-com Ghost of Girlfriends Past. In the movie, Matthew McConaughey plays slick ladies man Connor Mead (he even manages to put on a shirt!) a celebrated professional photographer who when on the job (don’t be filthy!) uses a Nikon D2xs digital Slr camera.
This swanky camera is ideal for the professional photographer or the committed enthusiast. Certainly it doesn’t come cheap, but that’s what you pay for the supreme quality on show here. It’s robust and sturdy though not too clunky and heavy to handle. It’s easy to use with simple menus and a wealth of...

Here’s something a little bit different for this week’s gadget spot. Usually in this tribute to techie trinkets, we opt for something that is either plugged in or runs on batteries, but this time we’re ditching our mobile phones and computer wizardry to go old school and when we say old school we mean old school. We’re going back to World War II with Baz Luhrmann’s sweeping epic romance Australia starring Nicole Kidman and man of the moment Hugh Jackman (he’s got a film out at the moment called X-Men Origins: Wolverine – you might have heard of it) which is out now on DVD. Bringing you the stock saddle as used by Nicole’s aristocrat Lady Sarah Ashley.

Good morning and welcome to the week Boxwishers and what a week it promises to be. The summer season of blockbuster movies starts here with this Wednesday’s cinematic release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Why on a Wednesday you ask and it’s a jolly good question. But frankly, we just don’t care. We’re so psyched about this mutated beast of a movie that we’re going to be brandishing our claws in celebration with some Wolverine-inspired features later this week. However, before we check out Hugh Jackman on action man form, let’s see him as a romantic lead in today’s big new DVD release Australia. And if you don’t fancy that, then it’s a good job we’ve also got some family comedy and cutting satire. Click over for more…

Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0 Chicago – Visionary director Baz Luhrmann would probably like people to watch his grandiose, old-fashioned, epic “Australia” on the big screen, but HD Blu-Ray seems made for this vibrant, colorful director. At first. This Luhrmann fan, like a lot of people who loved “Strictly Ballroom,” “Romeo + Juliet,” and “Moulin Rouge!” was let down by Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman in theaters and the disappointment continues on Blu-Ray.
Before we go anywhere, “Australia” is primarily a sensory experience. It has sweeping cinematography, dozens of locations, elaborate costumes, and Luhrmann’s rainbow-esque color scheme. You won’t see blues and reds much brighter or a picture much more vibrant than you will on Fox’s “Australia” release but it’s still not right. There an odd flatness to the transfer, something not uncommon to Fox Bd.

Australia DVD reviewby Peter Dimako, Editor A remarkably touching epic and one of the most undeservedly underrated films of 2008. Baz Luhrmann’s epic drama “Australia” is a gargantuan feat, capturing elements of romance, oppression, war and drama and leaving one ultimately emotionally satisfied. Vibrant and adventurous, the film quickly gets off the mark with a prestigious cattle farmer being murdered. This is told by the very talented Brandon Walters as Nullah, an Aborigine youth who states that his grandfather King George (David Gulpilil) is thought to have committed said act. Still, with murder in the picture, the film manages to get off to a cheery and lighthearted start. We meet English aristocrat Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) who journeys to Australia finding her loved one slain at their Faraway Downs cattle station. At the station, she quickly realizes that her husband’s first in command, a sinister Neil Fletcher (David Wenham...

Hollywood actress Nicole Kidman knew her performance in Baz Luhrmann epic Australia would be savaged by critics, because she isn't proud of the work herself.
The star appears opposite Hugh Jackman as British aristocrat Lady Sarah Ashley in the movie, but Kidman admits she feels no pride for her work - because she "couldn't connect emotionally" to her character.
And she was so appalled by her own acting when she saw the film in full at its November premiere in Sydney, she and husband Keith Urban took the first plane out of the country so she didn't have to face the criticism.
Speaking recently on Sydney radio station 2day FM, she said, "I can't look at this movie and be proud of what I've done.
"I sat there (at the premiere) and I looked at Keith and went 'Am I any good in this movie?' But I thought Brandon Walters (an 11-year-old Aboriginal boy) and Hugh Jackman were wonderful. It's just impossible for me to connect to it emotionally at all.
"We ran because I didn't want to read anything. I didn't want to know."...

As Lady Sarah Ashley in Baz Luhrman’s romantic epic Australia star Nicole Kidman is the picture of refined elegance – big surprise. It’s no kind of challenge for a style icon such as Kidman, famed for her delicate porcelain doll features and faultless red carpet chic, however seeing her fill the big screen in World War II fashions such as cute cardigans and pretty florals remains no kind of hardship. It’s another collaboration between the star and Oscar-winning costume designer Catherine Martin (who also serves as the film’s production designer, co-producer and is writer/ director Luhrman’s wife) after 2001’s Moulin Rouge and like its camp predecessor is filled with sumptuous styles. And ever eager to get our hands on top film fashions we’ve found this spot-on lookalike of Lady Ashley’s bow blouse from top high street store French Connection.

Australia was a thrilling, action packed film in which Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman ply the parts of the characters, Lady Sarah Ashley and Drover. Lady Sarah Ashley(Kidman) was going to her husband cattle ranch when she discovered that her husband, who resided in England, was killed. When she thought that all hope was lost, Drover came in and rescued her just when she needed it. Even though this movie is extremly long, and I'm not that fond of long movie, I was able to sit through it without squerming, or even talking to the person beside me. I believe that the director, Baz Luhrmann, shou...

Chicago – Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman and newcomer Brandon Walters star in Baz Luhrmann’s “Australia”: a sweeping, grand epic in the tradition of “Gone With the Wind” that gets away from its talented director, the writers he worked with and the team he hired to film his passion project.
Luhrmann and co-writers Stuart Beattie, Ronald Harwood and Richard Flanagan take an everything-and-the-kitchen-sink approach to adding elements of classic romance, historical epic, cultural statement and war movie into their sprawling vision of some of Australia’s most formative years.
Rating: 2.5/5.0 Taken separately, those divergent elements in “Australia” nearly work. When the film is viewed as an entire experience, the final combined product is ultimately unsatisfying and woefully disjointed.

Rated PG-13
What should we do when someone tries so hard and fails? Should we applaud the endeavor - in this case a massive production in scope and budget - for being so audacious in the first place, or should we wonder why it's not any better?
I'm going with the latter, because there are quite a few exceptional epics that you could compare to Baz Luhrmann's homeland homily, Australia. This one is simply not in that league. Luhrmann has spent years developing his $120 million film, none of which matters if what's on the page never comes to life.
Curiously enough, it's a story Luhrmann correctly identifies as being worth telling, but the characters that walk us through this world don't seem to fully belong there, or belong together. Ultimately, it's not knowing which characters should...

Amazing how a film stuffed with romance, action and wartime history only leads to utter frustration. More cinematic soup than epic moviemaking, director/co-writer Baz Luhrmann may claim something for every taste in his sprawling adventure “Australia” but he fails at each attempted genre. "Australia," arguably the biggest movie of the holiday season, is also a film of missed opportunities, few laughs, insufficient romance and clumsy action. For Luhrmann, director of the wonderful musical "Moulin Rouge!" and the romantic and hip "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet," “Australia” is the type of costly, creative misstep that derails careers. English aristocrat Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) travels to Australia in 1939 and partners with a horseman and cattle rancher nicknamed "The Drover" (Hugh Jackman). Together, they will work together to save the ranch she inherited from her late husband by driving her cattle to the port city of Darwin and selling the beef to the Australian Army.

The epic is a dying breed in Hollywood. Epics usually are expensive to make with long running times, which equates to less screenings during the day. This puts even more pressure for films like this to have big weekends to justify the large budgets. Director Baz Luhrmann is ready to buck these odds with his latest film, “Australia”. Luhrmann’s last film was the exhilarating and sometimes dizzying “Moulin Rouge!”. Luhrmann is not shy about what he puts on the screen. He usually throws everything into the mix and sees what sticks. Families heading to the multiplexes post-turkey this Thanksgiving can unbutton those tight belts in the dark after choosing from an eclectic mix of hard-hitting action, sweeping epics and prickly romance.
"Australia"
Never one to be rushed, director Baz Luhrmann has taken seven years since putting his so-called "red curtain trilogy" to bed before delivering this, the first installment in his announced trilogy of epics. Once more showcasing his fascination with great melodrama, old-school villainy and larger-than-life love stories, Luhrmann has reinvented himself without really reinventing himself with this grandiose romance set against the backdrop of a transforming nation. Returning muse Nicole Kidman stars as Sarah Ashley, a freshly widowed cattlewoman who falls in love with a rugged ranch hand named Drover (Hugh Jackman), as the two drive 1500 head of cattle to Darwin. Unfortunately, they arrive just in time to see the Japanese bombers appear on the horizon.

This is a daunting effort as Luhrmann hopes to make a film as grand as the likes of Gone With the Wind and Lawrence of Arabia all while telling a love story mixed in with the tragic racial policies imposed on half-white/half-Aboriginal children as they are stripped from their families in an effort to "breed the black out of them". Much has been made in the media both at home and abroad of the picture postcard quality of Baz Luhrman’s lavish love story Australia. Showcasing the charms of the writer/director’s home country on an epic canvas, the World War II romance starring homegrown talent Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman is expected to prompt people to head down under for their next holiday, boosting tourism in the area much as The Lord of the Rings did for Australia’s neighbour New Zealand. However, while the rugged landscapes of New South Wales might seduce some movie-goers, the film’s production designer/ costume designer/ producer/ Luhrman’s wife Catherine Martin is hoping that others are inspired by the fashions as she and Australian bush outfitters brand R.M.Williams are launching a clothing collection based on the movie.
Entitled “R.M.Williams by Catherine Martin”, the Oscar winner collaborated with R.

"Australia" will no longer be an epic tale drama with a tragic ending. News.com.au reported that filmmaker Baz Luhrmann has given in to 20th Century Fox's pressure to change the conclusion of his epic and romantic action adventure by agreeing to rewrite the ending and eliminate the tragic part.
Reportedly, after intense discussions with studio executives, the director of "Moulin Rouge!" was persuaded sometime last week to alter the ending for a more uplifting one. The persuasion for the ending's alteration comes following test screenings which draw negative responses to the movie's more-than-three-hours initial cut.
Of the feedback, one reviewer wrote as quoted by the publication, "If they can tastefully tie this movie up into a solid story, with a nice pace, Baz will have a winner here." The reviewer then continued to complain about the claimed-to-be unnecessary killing of Hugh Jackman's character, The Drover who is left dying in final scenes.
