[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Death and Other Details‘ Season Finale, “Chilling.”] And just like that, a seafaring “whodunnit?” became an icy “to whom have they dunnit to know?!” In the final hour of Hulu‘s stylish, sassy, and serpentine mystery dramedy, a lot happened: We learned who killed Katherine Collier (Jayne Atkinson), saw Imogene (Violett Beane) turn the tables on her evil mom Kira, aka Viktor Sams, aka Agent Hilde Eriksen (Linda Emond) and send her to prison for the murders of half the guests on the ship, witnessed the darkest turn yet for Imogene’s former bestie Anna (Lauren Patten) and got the setup for a potential Season 2. More importantly, we were given our potential heroes for the next mystery. In the episode’s last moments, Imogene and three of her fellow doomed cruise survivors—defamed journalist Leila (Pardis Saremi), ship doyenne Teddy (Angela Zhou), and sexy Af ex-con-slash-head of security Jules (Hugo Diego Garcia)—stumbled ...

It isn’t just you. We’re two weeks into the new year and every show on TV has become a murder mystery.
There are reality murder mysteries (Traitors) and animated murder mysteries (Grimsburg) and British murder mysteries (Criminal Record) and occult murder mysteries (Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale). There are murder mysteries without daylight (True Detective: Night Country) and adapted recent murder mysteries (Fool Me Once) and adapted characters in original murder mysteries (Monsieur Spade).
Those are just January premieres. So far. There’ll be at least one more new murder mystery before the end of the week (The Woman in the Wall).
It’s easy to point to the blockbuster success of the two Knives Out movies and the steady success of the Kenneth Branagh/Michael Green-steered Hercule Poirot movies as a business-driven cause.
Sociologically, it’s easy to point to a decade of distrust of institutional policing...

Baby Ruby is a horror movie written and directed by Bess Wohl starring Noémie Merlant and Kit Harington.
This is a suprise in her debut as a suspense and horror film director that makes one thing clear: She knows how to direct.
Excellent rhythm and tension.
Storyline
A mother experiences her worst nightmare when, after her daughter Ruby arrives, her world starts turning into a nightmare after she has visions and episodes where she loses her mind, which are all related to her baby.
Movie Review Baby Ruby (2022)
This is a movie that stands out more in the directing than in the screenplay, both of these are by the same person. An excellent movie as far as rhythm is concerned and knowing how to keep the tension up, with a balanced editing, filming, good photography and… on top of this, the director manages to get good acting from the main actress Noémie Merlant,...

“Both mother and baby are doing well,” claim so many birth announcements — an innocuous flash of good news that, in all too many cases, proves to be a bit premature. The baby may be fine after weathering the ordeal of entering the world; the mother might not yet be out of the woods. The strains and vagaries of postpartum depression — still widely misunderstood and even shamed by those who haven’t experienced it — morph into literal horrors in “Baby Ruby,” a stylish and suitably stressful debut feature from Tony-nominated playwright Bess Wohl (“Grand Horizons”). As Wohl rather boldly challenges her audience to maintain belief in, and sympathy for, the anxieties and psychoses tormenting otherwise privileged new mother Josephine (Noémie Merlant), any viewers who waver only prove her larger point.

"I know the truth." Magnet has revealed an official trailer for a film titled Baby Ruby, which premiered at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival last fall. It will be out in US theaters starting in early February. The film marks the directorial debut of actress / playwright Bess Wohl, telling the story of a woman who brings her new baby home. Here's the TIFF intro: Jo is a young lifestyle influencer with the kind of renovated home, handsome husband, and picture-perfect, aspirational nursery that make her followers envy her. Typically in control of herself and everyone in her radius, Jo prepares for the arrival of her baby, Ruby, by planning her own flawless baby shower and vlogging every step along the way. Soon, however, the chaos of postpartum recovery and new motherhood throws Jo's routines and relationships into disarray. The film stars Noémie Merlant and Kit Harington, with Meredith Hagner and Jayne Atkinson.

At long last, the end is nigh. When "The Walking Dead" first premiered on Halloween in 2010, little did we know what a behemoth it would become, sparking a zombie outbreak that consumed network television, streaming services, and movie theaters. What began as Rick Grimes' (Andrew Lincoln) story morphed into a universal saga about how humanity managed to survive in an apocalyptic wasteland.
Eleven seasons later, "The Walking Dead" has cemented itself as one of the greatest TV shows in history. By this point, it's hard to imagine AMC without its flagship show, even though there are numerous spin-offs currently on the air, with even more on the way, including a limited series about Rick and Michonne. Despite the conclusion of the original series, "The Walking Dead" universe has never been more alive.

Pop culture — at least in the Western world — treats pregnancy and early motherhood as a magical time, when back aches and sleepless nights are a mere inconvenience in what is otherwise a fantastic, love-fuelled, once-in-a-lifetime journey. That is bulls***. And with "Baby Ruby," Bess Wohl is setting the record straight.
Premiering at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, "Baby Ruby" is a tense, visceral psychological thriller that sets out to dismantle everything you think you know about being a mom. Written and directed by Tony-nominated American playwright Bess Wohl, the film centers on the independent, perfectionist, mom-to-be Jo (Noémie Merlant), who branded herself as a chic lifestyle influencer through her successful blog, "Love, Joséphine." Using the power of the internet — and, let's face it, her good looks and wealth — Jo has carefully curated an aspirational image for her online followers. Despite its title, writer/director Bess Wohl’s debut feature “Baby Ruby” isn’t primarily about the titular infant. It instead takes interest in her beleaguered mother Jo (Noémie Merlant of “Portrait of a Lady on Fire”), a lifestyle influencer for an online magazine. Her husband, Spencer, is an “ethical” butcher. The pair, living in a lavish cabin, on paper, are the kind of seemingly perfect couple who put their idyllic baby pictures online to stir envy. They show the best parts of motherhood and sanitize the strain. But the bitter truth that Jo discovers is that you can’t hide the arduous parts.
The very idea of cinema showing the horrors and travails of motherhood isn’t new. It’s a trend gaining speed with films like “Kindred,” “Umma,” and “Lamb.” And yet, what separates Wohl’s film from everything else is how it dissects the performative exteriority of...

“Baby Ruby,” which held its world premiere at TIFF, is not your mother’s movie about being a new mom. Or maybe it is. In the film, Noémie Merlant (“Portait of a Lady on Fire”) plays Jo, an influencer who plans on seamlessly incorporating her new baby into her brand, until the experience isn’t exactly all it’s chalked up to be. As Jo struggles with her postpartum recovery, she grows alienated from the people around her: the other new mothers in her circle, her helpless husband and most disturbingly, Baby Ruby herself, who acts out only when she’s alone with Jo.

Exclusive: Career Opportunities in Murder and Mayhem, the Hulu series in the works that stars Mandy Patinkin, has put the finishing touches on its already starry ensemble by adding Linda Emond (The Gilded Age) and Jayne Atkinson (House of Cards) in heavily recurring roles.
Emond will play Agent Hilde Eriksen, a shrewd, bureaucratic Interpol agent who comes on board the SS Varuna to investigate after a murder takes place. She’s repped by CAA. Atkinson will play Katherine Collier, the whip smart mother of Anna (Lauren Patten) and wife to the powerful tycoon Lawrence Collier (David Marshall Grant). She’s repped by Industry Entertainment.
The project written by Stumptown duo Mike Weiss and Heidi Cole McAdams and directed by Marc Webb asks the question how do you solve a murder in a post-fact world, especially when sailing the Mediterranean on an ocean liner filled with the wealthy and powerful? Everyone on board is hiding something,...

Spoiler Alert: The following story contains details from the season finale of CBS and MGM Television’s Clarice.
On Thursday, Clarice came to the end of its first (and likely final) season, presenting resolution in the case of the Anacostia River murders, as well as signs of personal growth on the part of the titular FBI agent, and a couple of major deaths.
By the time finale, “Family Is Freedom” kicks off, ViCap has uncovered most of the dark secrets of Alastar Pharmaceuticals and its emotionally disturbed CEO, Nils Hagen (Peter McRobbie). Putting her career on the line to aid them in their investigation is Clarice’s fellow agent and best friend, Ardelia (Devyn A. Tyler), who is told by her boss to stay out of the matter, but refuses to do so.
While it’s clear by the beginning of Episode 13 that Hagen is behind the aforementioned murders, one...

Clarice Episode 12
In Clarice episode 12, “Father Time,” Agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) finally loses her shit and clocks someone, and the series is better off for it. The young agent who rose to the top of a media circus on her first serial killer case has been scrutinized, chastised, hypnotized, and downsized since returning to the field. She’s had to run amok straight into danger just to get a point across which will solve cases. Tonight, Clarice lashes out at everyone, packs her boxes, and runs until her legs give out. It provides the most satisfying episode the series has given so far.
Starling has even had enough of her chosen, as opposed to assigned, therapist. Dr. Renee Li (Grace Lynn Kung), is the very definition of calming. Just a few words from her mouth usually silence the lambs in Clarice’s head. But...

Clarice Episode 11
Clarice, episode 11, “Achilles Heel,” could almost be called the “I-told-you-so” episode. After half a season of knocking down Agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) as a rogue, unreliable, dangerous or mentally unbalanced cop, almost every character who got screen time this season gets to say their version of “we should have listened to Clarice.” This bodes well for the investigation, but also for the psyches of her closest acquaintances.
In the last episode, Clarice decided Catherine Martin (Marnee Carpenter) had to face some consequences for her actions. The surviving victim of the serial killer Buffalo Bill took his mother hostage, not entirely intentionally, but functionally enough to warrant observation. Catherine’s mother, the Attorney General Ruth Martin (Jayne Atkinson), is incensed over the idea her daughter is being victimized by the system, especially since she gave strict orders to the agent she forced to go rogue,...

Clarice, episode 10, “Motherless Child,” finally addresses the elephant in the room. Well, almost. The Silence of the Lambs spinoff is a series of almosts. Agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) almost gets killed every episode, as well as nearly always coming to the edge of getting fired, sometimes twice in an installment.
Tonight, Clarice almost helps Catherine Martin (Marnee Carpenter), who almost kills Buffalo Bill’s mom, Lila Gumb (Maria Ricossa). She also almost helps Attorney General Ruth Martin (Jayne Atkinson), who nearly fires her for it. Ultimately, neither one gets what they want, while Starling gets to decide what they deserve. Clarice Episode 6
Clarice, episode 6, “How Does It Feel to Be So Beautiful,” opens in the aftermath of Clarice’s (Rebecca Breeds) nearly-lethal encounter with the recently deceased Marilyn Felker, and it brings her back to square one. The ViCAP agent is put on administrative leave, ordered to return to therapy, and given a last supper by the Attorney General, Ruth Martin (Jayne Atkinson). But it begins with a regressive hypnosis session that opens up a world of moth-eaten fantasia.
Agent Shaan Tripathi (Kal Penn) says Organized Crime believes in Dr. Renee Li (Grace Lynn Kung), who was recruited to plumb the depths of Clarice’s memories. The agent got sucker punched while attempting to escape from Dr. Felker’s personal intensive care unit, but doesn’t remember if she got a good look at the face of her attacker. Texas lawmakers are currently debating whether...

Dinner drama. In this exclusive clip from tonight, April 1's all-new Clarice, Agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) is roped into an awkward dinner with U.S. Attorney General Ruth Martin (Jayne Atkinson) and her daughter Catherine (Marnee Carpenter). From the start, it's clear that no one, and we mean no one, is enjoying this dinner. At the start of the clip, Catherine, who survived being abducted by serial killer Buffalo Bill thanks to Clarice, is seen switching out her dinner for dairy-free yogurt. As was noted earlier in the series, Catherine has become "very thin" following her rescue as Buffalo Bill only kidnapped heavier women to skin them. While Clarice is empathetic to...

Clarice Episode 5
Clarice, episode 5, “Get Right with God,” is the best episode of the season because the show gets right with The Silence of the Lambs. The series has been putting off most of the references, some by design, come contractually forced. Agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) has done her level best to avoid talking about it, even in therapy. Though, to be fair, she avoids even the smallest of chatter there, and often appears to be communicating via a blinked Morse code.
Starling has gone as far running rogue and publicly plug an inconvenient theory to push the traumatic events of the source film further away. She’s done this against the express wishes of her coworkers, and the Attorney General, Ruth Martin (Jayne Atkinson), who salivates at the very phrase “serial killer.” Just as the ViCAP unit is finally on the same page as Starling,...

AMC surprised fans of “The Walking Dead” with the news that the Season 10 finale wasn’t actually the finale. Six additional episodes would be added to the season detailing the aftermath of The Whisperer War. The first of those bonus installments is Episode 17, “Home Sweet Home,” which aired Sunday, February 28. It features the long awaited reintegration of Maggie (Lauren Cohan) into the core cast, but a dangerous new threat has followed Maggie back to Virginia. Let’s dive into the top five moments of “Home Sweet Home” below.

Clarice Episode 3
Clarice, episode 3, “Are You Alright?,” almost allows Agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) to overcome the typecasting of her role in the events in the film The Silence of the Lambs. The federal cop practically changes the venue by sheer force of will, as if she could burn the idea of a serial killer from the network series. Sadly, her flame is still attracting too many moths.
The episode again begins in the therapist’s office, so we know the scene will be brief. Both the patient and the doctor appear to be sparring rather than psychoanalyzing. Every sentence is a game of chicken, and it begins to feel more like an interrogation than a session. What makes it interesting are the cuts, which bring doubt to the proceedings. Is Clarice being paranoid? Yes, of course, but that doesn’t mean no one’s after her.

That certainly rang true.
Clarice Season 1 Episode 1 answered the question that many have been pondering since "The Silence of the Lambs" was released 30 years ago: Whatever happened to FBI trainee Clarice Starling?
In this envisioning by Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet, apparently, she was still largely trapped by that night in Buffalo Bill's house of horrors.
That only makes sense. There was no way she was ready for that event, and understandably she hadn't processed it by the time the series opened one year later.
Unsurprisingly, Clarice had been hiding in a basement crunching crime statistics, as far from public exposure as possible.
She had been equally evasive during her mandated therapy sessions, as was evident through her verbal jousting with her therapist.
Fortunately, in the guise of U.S. Attorney General Ruth Martin, fate wouldn't allow Clarice to continue to squander her gifts. Otherwise, we wouldn't have this fascinating new series.

Clarice Episode 1
Clarice, episode 1, “The Silence is Over,” is a fairly literal title. It is set shortly after the events in the film The Silence of the Lambs, in the period when most agents should be reflecting on such an emotionally trying case. Especially since the agent, who was only a trainee at the time, was thrown into “Buffalo Bill’s House of Horrors” just like the women she was trying to save.
Agent Clarice Starling is not comfortable with the word survivor. She swears she was only doing her job, and Rebecca Breeds brings this work ethic to the forefront of how the world sees FBI Agent Starling. As she is mentally sparring with her department-appointed therapist, her eyes dart around the room, noting his movements, the way he sits, how he arranges his magazines. She profiles him as a matter of course. He...

Absent any framework, the new CBS drama series “Clarice” is still a bit worse than fine. Anyone familiar with the broadcast network’s preferred genre of rote crime procedurals may be satisfied (though certainly not thrilled), and anyone expecting more than that, frankly, should know better. But even the most pop culture-averse viewers are likely to start “Clarice” with some level of base knowledge. There’s the recent “Hannibal” TV show, the less recent “Hannibal” movie, and Jonathan Demme’s Oscar-winning 1991 classic, “The Silence of the Lambs”; only the latter serves as backstory here, but they’re all reasonable comparison points, and they’re all vastly superior to “Clarice.”

CBS’ “Silence of the Lambs” sequel “Clarice” won’t get to mention one of its most famous characters by name because of rights issues.
Despite taking place a year after the events of “Silence of the Lambs,” the CBS series will not mention Hannibal Lecter, the cannibalistic serial killer memorably played by Anthony Hopkins in the 1991 film.
The rights to Thomas Harris’ characters are split between MGM and the Dino De Laurentiis Company. “Clarice” showrunner Elizabeth Klaviter explained that CBS only has the rights for characters introduced in Harris’ 1988 novel “Silence of the Lambs.” Unfortunately, since Lecter’s first appearance came in another Harris novel, “Red Dragon,” that makes him off-limits.
“Of course, Hannibal Lecter is an iconic villain, who has enchanted all Thomas Harris fans throughout a variety of series and movies. And it’s been really great to be able to experience all of those stories that are built around him,...

Two long shadows hang over Clarice, the new CBS drama following FBI agent Clarice Starling in the aftermath of her showdown with serial killer Buffalo Bill. The first shadow is cast by The Silence of the Lambs, the 1991 film that swept the top five Academy Awards categories that year, including a Best Actress Oscar for Jodie Foster as Clarice. The second shadow comes from Hannibal, the NBC drama about the other, far more iconic murderer from Silence, cannibal psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter.

This Clarice review is based on the first three episodes and contains no spoilers.
CBS’s new federal cop procedural Clarice is a little bit grittier than the majority of crime shows on network TV. It also flips the perspective on the mainly male Pov of the genre. Both of these innovations can be attributed to the source material. The series is a sequel to the story told in Jonathan Demme’s psychological horror classic The Silence of the Lambs. It distinguishes itself from the film and the original book in two ways. The first is the crimes which are being investigated. There is no traditional serial killer. Oh, there are people who fit the legal definition, that’s part of the setup, but Clarice is playing a longer game. The Vicap Fly Team, the exclusive unit on the series, is after something far more insidious.

By now, you’d think, we would have learned to leave Clarice Starling alone.
The dogged, haunted FBI trainee was so memorably played by Jodie Foster in 1991’s “The Silence of the Lambs” that Foster’s refusal to reprise the role made the sequel, 2001’s “Hannibal,” fatally unbalanced. No less a talent than Julianne Moore drowned in the role, unable to make the part her own and perhaps unwilling to try. Why bother, when it’s the Fosterian grit and quiet rage that made Starling feel like a peer to Anthony Hopkins’s genteel and deranged Hannibal Lecter?
“Clarice,” a new drama on CBS executive produced by Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet, begins to solve the problem by removing a variable. Lecter’s absence from the series is not, or not solely, a creative choice; a complicated rights-holding situation means that MGM, which coproduces “Clarice,” is legally entitled to depict Starling,...

If you’ve always wanted a deeper dive into the mind of The Silence of the Lambs‘ Clarice Starling, then CBS has a new show for you. Clarice, which takes place in 1993, aka a year after the events of The Silence of the Lambs, will tell the “untold personal story” of Clarice Starling as she returns to the field. In the new CBS show, the very hard work of catching serial murderers and sexual predators will be made even more complicated by the high-stakes political world of D.C. The series comes from Star Trek‘s Alex Kurtzman and Rachel Getting Married‘s Jenny Lumet, and the first episode was directed by Maja Vrvilo, whom you may recognize from her recent, excellent work from both Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard. Basically, Clarice is a new TV show to look out for—whether you are a fan of Thomas Harris’ work or not.
