“Shuffle Along, or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed” came out on top at the Fred and Adele Astaire Awards held Monday, May 16, with three wins. The show took outstanding ensemble and its star Phillip Attmore was named best male dancer. Choreographer Savion Glover was honored with the best choreographer win and shared the recognition with Andy Blankenbuehler for his work on “Hamilton” and Sergio Trujillo for the Gloria Estefan jukebox musical “On Your Feet!” “She Loves Me” star Jane Krakowski—who is literally dragged across the stage in a full split in one of the revival’s numbers—took the award for best female dancer. She beat out the impressive tap dancing routines from Eloise Kropp and Mara Davi in “Dames at Sea,” as well as Deanna Doyle of “Tuck Everlasting,” Ana Villafañe of “On Your Feet!,” Adrienne Warren of “Shuffle Along,” and Sandra Mae Frank of “Spring Awakening.

The sparkling new Broadway musical Shuffle Along boasts an all-star cast and one heck of a tap-happy, super talented ensemble. Dancer Phillip Attmore is among those skillful hoofers who tear up the floor nightly at The Music Box Theatre. This guy has charisma to spare and literally bursts out of the chorus performing a rapid-fire succession of rhythm turns that are reminiscent of the dynamic tapping from the old classic movie musicals.

If a reviewer decided to adhere to the old maxim about comparisons being odious in the case of the City Center Encores! series Gentlemen Prefer Blondes concert reading, he'd be obliged to say that Megan Hilty does a solid job as Lorelei Lee.
She gets her laughs on the lines Anita Loos and Joseph Fields supplied the deceptively savvy, supposedly dumb blonde Loos first immortalized in her 1920s Harper's Bazaar sketches and eventually published in novel form. Wearing a dazzling gown on which costumer David C. Woolard consulted, Hilty delivers an applause-reaping "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend." Indeed, throughout the show, she acquits herself as well as might be hoped and expected.
If, on the other hand, a reviewer admits it's impossible to sit through any Gentlemen Prefer Blondes iteration without flashing on the previous two attention-demanding Lorelei Lees -- Carol Channing on Broadway in 1949 (following her scintillating Great...

[To better cover the technical talents of season 6, we've brought on Dr. Goddess, a fan columnist with decades of dance experience. She will share her dance-pertise in a weekly column recapping and reviewing So You Think You Can Dance with an eye on technique.]
"Now, this is a show about improvement and, I mean, how do you improve, like, what do you become? It's gonna be freakish." -- Adam Shankman
Indeed, So You Think You Can Dance was freakish. Channing Cooke and Phillip Attmore kicked things off---literally---with Jason Gilkison's jive routine and the perfect costuming to showcase Channing's perfect legs. Both she and Phillip started and ended well but it took them a while to fully engage the performance. The energy did dip mid-performance and, yes, the final pull-through and flip was so awkward, I thought Phillip might be going home.

It was a dancer’s dream and a choreographer’s delight when So You Think You Can Dance decided to try something a little different for their first fall episode after auditions. Rather than jump right into competition, the judges, the audience and the choreographers had a chance to meet the top 20 and see them dance in their own styles without worry of elimination. Judges Nigel, Mary and Adam Shankman (now a permanent fixture) were on hand more to encourage than to critique on the new set, now on the famed American Idol stage. (There was even a designated spot for Paula Abdul if she decides to drop by!) The first of seven routines showcasing the top 20 in their respective styles started with a Wade and Amanda Robson creation set in a speakeasy world with rival gangs battle-dancing in a vivid costume extravaganza. Tabitha and Napoleon Dumo then got the...

After six Us cities, thousands of auditions and one grueling Vegas week, it was finally time for So You Think You Can Dance to reveal the top 20 of its first fall season. And what a talented bunch, boasting three tappers, three hip-hoppers and a gaggle of young and talented contemporary dancers. When Wednesday's episode began, 38 contestants waited in agony backstage as Nigel and Mary, who were joined by Adam Shankman, Debbie Allen, Tyce Diorio and Mia Michaels -- in her last appearance before leaving the show -- revealed their decisions. First up was contemporary dancer Nathan Trasoras, 18, from Downey, Calif., who was too young for season 5 but got a ticket to Vegas for season 6. A smiling Mia Michaels (with a newly shaved head) gave him the good news that Sytycd would like to be "a part of his growth." Next, the judges dished out bad news, including some shocking eliminations,...

Last night we learned the Top 20 of season 6. Today we get to learn a little more about each of them. During their first official So You Think You Can Dance photo shoot, the Top 20 was coupled up and sat down for an interview. These are not necessarily (or most often) the pairs they'll be dancing with, but it does offer insight into their personalities and that elusive star quality that Nigel is looking for.
Our second to last pairing brings Channing Cooke and Phillip Attmore together for their get to know you interview. As they talk about their genres, introduction to dance, and Top 20 journey it is clear that Channing has the type of spunky personality that made Jeanine Mason a winner. While Phillip Attmore has the kind of aloof confidence, that will have the judges saying he's too arrogant, ala Danny Tidwell.

"So You Think You Can Dance" has found its sixth season's Top 20. The Las Vegas weeks are over, judges including Mia Michaels who will soon quit the show to pursue other projects, were doing lots of rejections and happy announcements to the 32 dancers who made it to the Las Vegas callback.
The Top 10 girls consist of six dancers moving in the contemporary genre. They are Ariana Debose, Channing Cooke, Pauline Mata, Katherine McCormick, Noelle Marsh and Ellenore Scott who are all 18 years old except for Scott who is 19. "Actually, I came in last season as a contemporary dancer, which was a bad idea because I didn't train in contemporary for a long time," Mata confessed.
The other four are ranging from a ballroom dancer (Ashleigh Dilello), a jazz dancer (Mollee Gray), an American-rhythm dancer (Karen Hauer), and a tap dancer (Bianca Revels). Ashleigh is married to another contestant, Ryan Dilello,...

Barely enough time for season 5 champ Jeanine Mason to enjoy her first paparazzi moment, Fox's hit So You Think You Can Dance is back for its first fall season, and this time the bar is set to the moon as they search for America's favorite dancer. Judges Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe kicked things off Wednesday in the talent melting pot of Los Angeles, where 18-year-old Mollee Gray, who appeared as a principal dancer in all three High School Musical movies, showed off top-notch raw talent and got a plane ticket to Vegas. The judges seemed satisfied as more deserving hopefuls landed tickets including a returning Ryan Kasprzak, the lovable older brother of season 5's second runner-up Evan who, after wowing the room with his scat-tapping magic act that Shankman called “the best audition I've ever seen on this show,” took on fellow returning tapper Bianca Revels for...
