He was ordained as an Anglican minister, but his real passion was
trains. He told the Thomas the Tank Engine stories to his young son, Christopher.
He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1996 Queen's New Year Honours List for his services to children's literature.
