When big film festivals like Tiff are in full swing, you can bet on hearing about a few acquisition deals. This year is no different as several films have been picked up thus far and there are surely more to come. Specifically, today Magnolia Pictures is closing a world rights deal for Bob Goldthwait's latest dark comedy, God Bless America, which screened as a part of the Midnight Madness program. The film is a savage satire of American culture which focuses on a depressed man who becomes fed up with the way American culture has devolved. He finally decides to go on a shooting spree to "kill the stupidest, cruelest and most repugnant members of society." Along the way he receives assistance from a 16 year-old girl. The film features Joel Murray (brother of Bill) in a rare leading role as the shooter, and Tara Lynn Barr as his accomplice.

The latest buy out of Tiff is a good one: Bobcat Goldthwait's new black comedy God Bless America has been bought by Magnet for release in 2012. This is the same company that got behind Goldthwait's last film, World's Greatest Dad. So once God Bless America got a great reception at Tiff it was, if not a given, then certainly a pretty good bet that the company would get behind this new film, too. God Bless America will be released theatrically and on VOD at some point next year; hopefully we'll have a trailer and full scheduling info soon. Meanwhile, the press release from Magnet is below. Check out what Goldthwait said about the film [1] not long ago, and read Pete's rave review [2] of the film from Tiff, too. Toronto, On – September 13, 2011 – The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnet Releasing, genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, announced today they have acquired world...

Murray star as Frank, a desperate and depressed man who becomes so offended by the increasing stupidity of mainstream American culture that he embarks on a killing spree with the help of a teenage sidekick (Barr). "Idiocracy," meet "Falling Down." "America" was written and directed by Goldthwait ("Sleeping Dogs...

Exclusive: Magnolia Pictures is closing a world rights deal for God Bless America, the Bobcat Goldthwait-directed killing spree comedy. The film premiered over the weekend in the Midnight Madness program. I’ve heard it’s a high six figure deal and that Magnolia will release through Magnet, and the film will be an Ultra VOD title in 2012. That means it will start as a premium VOD title, then play theatrically in at least 25 cities. Satire is about a guy who has nothing going right and could be terminally ill. He takes a gun and decides to kill the stupidest, cruelest and most repugnant members of society, assisted by a 16-year-old accomplice. Joel Murray plays the shooter, and Tara Lynn Barr plays the sidekick. Sean McKittrick and Jeff Culotta are the producers. Cassian Elwes and Preferred Content’s Kevin Iwashina and Christine D’Souza brokered the deal. It is the...
