After training at the School of Decorative Arts in Paris, Barsacq worked as an assistant under Andre Andrejew before becoming a fully-qualified art director from 1934. He was noted for his atmospheric sets in films by Jean Renoir and Rene Clair. A book about his craft, Le Decor de Film, was posthumously published in 1970.
