Members of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television voted to crown Sophie Deraspe’s “Antigone” as best film at the Canadian Screen Awards Thursday, presented virtually by broadcasters CBC and CTV.
The film, a contemporary spin on the Greek tragedy, also won awards for lead female actor for Nahéma Ricci, female actor in a supporting role for Nour Belkhiria, adapted screenplay for Deraspe, and editing for Geoffrey Boulangé and Deraspe.
Variety’s review of the film, which was named best Canadian feature at the Toronto Film Festival, said it “feels refreshingly liberated by the spirit of Sophocles’ original material.” The “impassioned” film was “electrified by a performance of immense self-possession and dignity from revelatory new star Nahéma Ricci,” the critic wrote.
Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers and Kathleen Hepburn won the prizes for directing and original screenplay for “The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open.” The film also took the cinematography award for Norm Li.

Antigone, Sophie Deraspe’s haunting French-language drama that set its adaptation of the Greek tragedy as a tale of a modern-day refugee family in Montreal, won Best Picture and tied François Girard’s The Song of Names with five wins overall Thursday at the Canadian Screen Awards, Canada’s equivalent to the Oscars.
Winners in the Cinematic Arts categories came tonight in a virtual ceremony held by The Canadian Academy, culminating three days of award handouts spanning film, TV, news, sports and documentaries.

Late last week, the press and rabid “Tomb Raider” fans alike packed into a Tribeca theater for a panel moderated by The Game Awards’ Geoff Keighley. Those sitting on the panel included Senior Game Director Daniel Bisson, Lead Writer Jill Murray, Senior Brand Director Rich Briggs, and even the “Tomb Raider” herself, Camilla Luddington. Together the creative team discussed the storytelling tools, techniques, and artistic decisions behind one of the most iconic gaming franchises of all time, but not before treating the audience to a never before seen extended gameplay demo for the upcoming “Shadow of the Tomb Raider.”
This exclusive look at the game took viewers from the vibrant streets of Mexico to the suffocating depths of an underground Mayan city. Lara Croft has changed, the inquisitive explorer seems more frantic, even borderline obsessive this time around. As she hunts down an ancient artifact with the potential to bring about the apocalypse,...

"We don't have to have multiplayer to have a successful single-player,” Eidos Montreal’s Daniel Bisson told Eurogamer recently. “It’s not critical to do that.”
And yet, the new "Tomb Raider" game, published by Square Enix and coming out in March, has several multiplayer modes. Crystal Dynamics is handling the single-player campaign while Bisson’s team at Eidos Montreal is developing the game’s team deathmatch and survival multiplayer modes.
Bisson explained that the success of Laura Croft and the "Guardian of Light," 2010’s co-operative entry into the Tomb Raider franchise is partly responsible. “When [Crystal Dynamics] were doing it, people were asking why … They stuck to their guns and they ended up with something pretty successful, and that was pretty good,” Bisson says. Guardian of Light emboldened the team, pushing them to try new things with the long-running series.

Tomb Raider has always been an entertaining video game franchise, and this latest addition looks awesome! Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrell Gallagher and game director Daniel Bisson showed up during the Microsoft conference at E3 2012 to give us a walk through demo of the game showing us some fantastic gameplay action.
After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was travelling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach. On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive. Here begins the first adventure for a young and inexperienced Lara Croft in a story which charts the journey of an ordinary woman who finds out just how far she must go in order to stay alive.

Yesterday, the Genie Awards, Canada's equivalent of the Oscars for those who don't know, were handed out. This year, Polytechnique dominated the Genie Awards and even took the award for Best Motion Picture. However, the presentation of the award on TV and on webcast was too short. Besides, it wasn't a live presentation and not all the awards were shows on TV/webcast. Second Besides: When will a TV network (and not some cable network that few Canadians have) broadcast the Genie Awards? Anyway, without further ado, here's the presentation of the winners.
