There are certain things, when you live in Los Angeles, that are absolute must-dos, especially in the warmer weather months: see a show at the Hollywood Bowl (but leave before the fireworks); watch a movie at an outdoor venture (Hollywood Forever Cemetery being a favorite); and, in the past few years, travel to the Jim Henson Studios to watch a raunchy improv puppet comedy show.
“Puppet Up! Uncensored,” which resumes starting Friday, has become one of the things that you have to do in Los Angeles. And TheWrap spoke to Brian Henson, chairman of the Jim Henson Company, about the origins and evolution of this one-of-a-kind show. According to Henson, the project started in the early 2000’s, when there was concern that the performers had become too “script-bound.”
“We hadn’t found a new tone of comedy, something fresh, something that wasn’t Muppets,” Henson said.
He was discussing the problem with his then-girlfriend,...

Watch the Short Film Centigrade: "In anticipation of a Feature Length Version, Colin Cunningham’s Centigrade is celebrating its Rerelease exclusively at Centigrademovie.Com.
Starring Colin Cunningham the film depicts the dark events surrounding the day that
‘karma’ rolls into town. Centigrade garnered more than a dozen ‘Best of’ Awards and Nominations and ended up making the short list for an Academy Award Nomination.
Now, the multi-award-winning short film (one of the most successful in iTunes history) is ready to take the leap forward as a major motion picture. Only this time, they’re doing things a little differently.
"The project had actually been optioned by MGM as a TV show,” says Cunningham. “But restructuring at the studio sent it into turn-around. So, now, we’re going straight to the fans.”

The That Puppet Game Show co-producer on how his father got the Muppets on screen, and why London feels like home
Above the entrance to The Jim Henson Company lot in Hollywood stands one cultural icon, Kermit the Frog, dressed as another, Chaplin's Little Tramp. Chaplin built this lot in 1917 and sold it in 1953 after Hollywood blacklisted him. Now it's an active working studio, the headquarters of a puppetry empire that bestrides the world like a green-felt colossus, and also a living memorial to the man who might be called the Other Dad to three generations of children raised on Sesame Street and The Muppet Show (I count myself among them). And it's a measure of the centrality to modern American popular culture of Henson's cast of characters, and their abiding universality, that Kermit's donning of Chaplin's outfit seems not sacrilegious, but entirely natural and right.

This beautiful illustration to your left "We Miss You Jim" comes from Amy Mebberson. It's part of an art project for Tough Pigs which commemorated the 20th anniversary of Jim Henson's passing. The legendary creator of The Muppets died on May 16th, 1990 but his vast contribution to popular culture lives on. And so does his son, who we'll talk about in just a minute.
This Tough Pigs website sounds like it's pitched exactly to me (or anyone of Gen X and early Gen Y) "Muppet Fans Who Grew Up". If you grew up watching Sesame Street or The Muppets or you probably feel an unusually strong pull to creatures made of tangible felt, foam and fur. I feel that so strongly that I often find myself looking at a special effect and thinking "If only that were a puppet." Or maybe that was just during the ghastly "improvements" to...

Cassandra Peterson in All About Evil poster
Filmmaker Joshua Grannell has released a new poster promoting his upcoming feature film, All About Evil. We all know that dark horror comedies can be brilliantly done. Take the 2 sequels of Evil Dead, Dead-Alive and Shaun of the Dead just to name a few. But for every gem you also get a dud and too often that's what happens when you try to merge the fine line of laughter and blood curdling horror. All Things Evil attempts just that and so far so good!...
Judging from the first batch of stills we just got from the upcoming film 'All About Evil' we think this film is on the right track.

I first became aware of Joshua Grannell and his alter ego, Peaches Christ, on a trip to San Francisco in 2000, maybe 2001? I was dating a guy who had moved down from Sf to Los Angeles, and on one of our many trips up north we took in a screening of Showgirls at the Midnight Mass summer film series. Peaches was the host of the evening, and the show opened with a re-enactment of both the “Goddess” number and the “Nomi F-s Zack in the pool” scene with drag queens (and one drag king playing “Zack.”) I was hooked.
Over the years I would try and catch Midnight Mass screenings whenever I was up in Sf. I found out that Peaches was actually Grannell who was actually a manager at the Bridge, the theater in which the madness took place. Grannell programmed the series, and created unique pre-shows with his drag...

Natasha Lyonne, covered in blood, figured prominently in the first poster for Joshua Grannell's All About Evil. The second showcases the hauntingly beautiful Jade and Nikita Ramsey, who play "Veda" and "Vera", killer twins who were institutionalized earlier in life after murdering their family at seven years of age. They are silent but deadly and were born knowing all about evil.
There will be five more posters released over the next five months, and Grannell promises he and his crew are working hard on the official website, which will feature the first trailer.

“A pair of strippers by the airport…an elderly woman and her caretaker daughter…two hipsters who hang out in a coffeehouse…and a traditional, conservative Christian couple.” Put ‘em on an island and you’re looking at more mulch in the reality show wood chipper, but these random Americans are asked to pontificate in their own habitats, so what you’ve actually got is Freakdom of Speech. Brought to you by the folks at Iron Sink Media, Freakdom takes the long-running paradigm of the ignorant, or misinformed sensibility of your basic Daily Show field interviewee, plugs in actors, and gives them ample time to sound off free of interruption. Hosted by actor Patrick Bristow (he of an episode on Seinfeld and a recurring character on IFC’s The Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman fame), the show debuts with ‘Americans on Obama,’ and Bristow is mostly left off-screen and on the sidelines.

Patrick is also a favorite of top L.A. casting directors, playing character roles in movies such as Showgirls and many shows and sitcoms including Seinfeld and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.

We caught wind of a new film going into production next March in San Francisco, CA that sounds pretty freakin' cool. Written and directed by Joshua Grannell is All About Evil, which follows a mousy librarian, who has inherited her father's beloved old movie house, discovers her inner serial killer -- and a legion of rabid gore fans -- when she starts turning out a series of grisly shorts. Upcoming phenoms Thomas Dekker (From Within, The Sarah Connor Chronicles) and Noah Segan (Deadgirl, Cabin Fever: Spring Fever) will topline alongside horror legends Cassandra Peterson (Elvira) and Mary Woronov (Night of the Comet, Chopping Mall, House of the Devil). Patrick Bristow, Peaches Christ and Mink Stole round out the cast.

CHICAGO -- "Twilight of the Golds" sparkled in the opening-night glow of the 32nd annual Chicago International Film Festival.
Native Chicagoans play major roles in the production, most prominently director Ross Marks and executive producer/actor Garry "Go U Northwestern" Marshall, and so the cable project that Showtime hopes to release as a theatrical was met with almost pep-rally enthusiasm.
A sobering drama about a young married couple who learn through a scientific test that the baby the wife is carrying will become gay, the project grapples with a number of philosophical and moral points. Starring Jennifer Beals as the pregnant wife, Suzanne, and featuring a cast that includes Faye Dunaway, Brendan Fraser and Jon Tenney, a savvy distributor could generate some first-weekend interest among target interest groups, in this case, primarily women's-rights groups and gays.
Genetically, however, this thoughtful drama is of the panel-discussion species. Each respective family member or friend posits his or her point of view regarding the having of the child until all philosophical permutations are exhausted. And, most unfortunately, the characters are fashioned pretty much as representative types -- no one really surprises you.
Based on the play by Jonathan Tolin, "Twilight" radiates around Suzanne and her husband the doctor, Rob (Tenney). Suzanne is a mousy and timid sort who has always avoided risks, much to the chagrin of her supportive and rather bossy parents (Dunaway and Marshall). Cocooned by her family's affluence, she's settled into a sheltered life, running a tony clothing store.
When she learns she's pregnant, Rob suggests that she take a new test, one that he's helped develop, which will enable them to learn all sorts of information about the baby -- even its future sexual preference. Like their conscientious and competitive yuppie friends, they want "the best."
When the test reveals that the baby will be a boy who will most likely be gay, it gives them both pause. They want to do the right thing: In fact, Suzanne's loving brother David (Fraser) is gay, and her parents seem quite modern in their thinking. On the other hand --
At this juncture, screenwriters Tolin and Seth Bass begin the roundelay of discussion. They present a spectrum of perspectives taken from this evenly comprised cast, each bringing a personal viewpoint or bias as to whether or not Phyllis should "keep" the baby.
The dramaturgy seems to Bend Over backward to be philosophically fair and, indeed, provokes a number of interesting discussions on a number of social and scientific points. That's both the strength and the weakness: Inevitably, it takes on the gray flavor of a symposium.
And, each type, be it the "objective" man of science, the gay director, the establishment parent or the manly doctor, espouses orthodoxy according to their sexuality, life station and expectation. Eventually, the talk runs out and push comes to shove; woefully, that's almost the literal case here as a boozy homophobe causes the pregnant woman to hit the pavement. Bonk, she makes up her mind.
What gives this drama its most nutritious intellectual fiber are the superb performances. Admittedly, Beals is hampered by the shallow, wishy-washy nature of her character and never much engages our sympathies beyond a low simmer. However, others bring prickly passion to their roles.
In particular, Dunaway and Marshall stand out as her good-hearted, buttinski parents, while Rosie O'Donnell is characteristically a hoot as Suzanne's abrasive, infertile co-worker.
Fraser, as the gay brother, brings the most to the proceedings, showing the tumult beneath his affable and accommodating public nature and erupting into real rage when he feels he might have been aborted had his parents known he would be gay. That's the moment when "Twilight" reaches its highest light.
Under Marks' fluid and gentle hand, the production is as carefully assembled and presented as the drama.
Once again, that's the project's strength and weakness. In this insular Beverly Hills world, all colors are coordinated: Food complements sweaters, and sport coats mesh with plants. In short, where are the unexpected colors -- in personality, viewpoint and setting? That's "Twilight"'s ultimate fading, artificially and too carefully coordinated in both characters and colors.
