American novelist, critic, and author of short stories (for which he
has won two Nebula Awards) primarily in the fields of horror, science
fiction, and surrealistic fiction. He grew up on a cattle ranch in
southeastern Wyoming, and was a houseguest of Harlan Ellison's for
an extended period in the 1970s.
