- After marrying a West Indian immigrant in 1965, he and his wife opened an Afro-Caribbean club, The Bamboo Club, in Bristol; Bob Marley was one of the musicians who performed there. He also became a race relations advocate.
- While taking part in the Vendée Globe single-handed around-the-world yacht race in 1997, his yacht Exide Challenger capsized 2200 km off the coast of Australia. He was thought to have drowned, but he was rescued from the upturned hull four days later by the Australian navy, after reportedly surviving on chocolate and water.
