- Graduate from Muskingum College (B.A. 1928), the University of Wisconsin (M.A. in speech, 1930) and the University of Minnesota PH.D. in Theatre, 1941). Served in the U.S. Navy (1943-46) making training films. Taught at City Colegge, Los Angeles (1947-54), prior to joining Film Production International. Carmichael was Moderator of the Synod of Southern California and Hawaii in 1987.
