A.A. Milne’s 1926 children’s book Winnie-the-Pooh and the characters in it lapsed into the public domain at the start of last year, paving the way for the Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey horror franchise, which in turn kicked off the Twisted Childhood Universe, consisting of other horror movies inspired by children’s stories, like Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, Bambi: The Reckoning, and Pinocchio Unstrung, building up to the crossover movie Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble. On January 1st, the earliest versions of Mickey Mouse – seen in the animated shorts Plane Crazy, The Gallopin’ Gaucho, and most famously Steamboat Willie – became public domain, so Mickey-based horror movies also started springing up. Within the first three days of the year, we saw the short film The Vanishing of S.S. Willie, a trailer for the slasher movie Mickey’s Mouse Trap, and an announcement that Terrifier 2 producers Steven Della Salla and...

Sleepaway Camp by Bj and Harmony Colangelo is Now Available: "Initially considered "just another slasher film" during its 1983 release, Sleepaway Camp has since emerged as a cult classic due to its talented young cast, remarkable practical effects, and notorious ending. But although the queer themes explored in its memorable final moments were initially intended to shock and unsettle audiences, Sleepaway Camp's empathetic portrayal of its unlikely killer sets it apart from other "trans panic" films of its time.
Together, Bj & Harmony Colangelo assess where Sleepaway Camp falls in the slasher canon and do a deep dive on the film's themes and legacy, exploring how changing attitudes towards the LGBT community has led to both a reclamation and necessary critique of the film by modern audiences.
Sleepaway Camp's divisive reputation has inspired a decades-long debate that changes alongside the attitudes and culture of its viewers. Through historical context, personal memoir,...

Exclusive: Untouchables Entertainment, in association with genre website iHorror, is in production on Mickey vs. Winnie. Glenn Douglas Packard, an Emmy nominated choreographer turned filmmaker (Pitchfork), is attached to direct from his original script.
The latest entry in the lineup of interpretations of children’s figures. Mickey vs. Winnie takes the now-public-domain characters from A. A. Milne’s ‘Winnie-the-Pooh’ books and Mickey Mouse from the 1920s Steamboat Willie cartoon.
The film follows two convicts in the 1920s who escape into a cursed forest only to be dragged and consumed into the depths of the dark forest’s muddy heart. A century later, a group of thrill-seeking friends unknowingly venture into the same woods. Their Airbnb getaway takes a horrifying turn when the convicts mutate into twisted versions of childhood icons Mickey Mouse & Winnie-The-Pooh, and emerge to terrorize them. A night of violence and gore erupts, as the group of friends...

With the new slasher-style horror Pitchfork selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on Friday 19th January. I got chance to ask actor Andrew Dawe-Collins about what makes the film stand out in the genre, preparing for the role of Ben Holister Sr. / Pa and his favourite scenes in the movie.
What can we expect from the film Pitchfork?
A cool, modern day slasher that pays tribute to the 80’s slasher films that writer, director, Glenn Douglas Packard grew up on. His love for the genre is easy to see in this film. But he also does a great job of giving us a fresher take on what a slasher film Hero is. Surprises a plenty in this film!
Can you tell me a little bit about your character?
Ben Holister Sr. or Pa, as he is referred to throughout the film. He’s a creep and nowhere near...

I love slasher films. I always have. In fact, I would say that it is the slasher, more than almost any other subgenre, that has defined me as a horror fan. As a fan, my reverence for these oft-maligned films knows no bounds and I find great comfort in revisiting them over and over.
However, as a film-maker, the prospect of actually making a slasher film terrifies me. As much as I want to believe that there is new ground just waiting to be broken, I struggle to see what can still be done with the slasher film. I approach every new entry with the hope that I will find something new, something that...

An eye-opening, or should I say door-opening, Q&A with the director of Never Open the Door courtesy of our very own Derek Anderson kicks off today's Horror Highlights! Also, we have trailers for both Pitchfork and Red Hollow and a call for submissions for Popcorn Fright Film Festival 2017.
Never Open the Door Q&A: Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Vito. When did you first come up with the idea for Never Open the Door?
Vito Trabucco: Thanks for having me. The idea first came from Chris Maltauro, my producer and co-writer, our camera operator Mike Bates, and me one night in a parking lot when we wrapped on another shoot. A few months prior I completed my first feature, Bloody Bloody Bible Camp. We were just eager to do another one.
Where did filming take place and what did that environment add...
